How Much of Your Portfolio Should Go Into a Single Sector?

There is no universal percentage that the SEC sets for a single-sector allocation. The appropriate amount depends on your investing time horizon, risk tolerance, overall asset mix and the importance of the goal your portfolio funds. A sector position should be judged as a share of your entire portfolio—not merely as a percentage of one brokerage account or one fund.

To measure it, add direct stock holdings to the sector exposure embedded in your mutual funds and ETFs, check for overlapping holdings, and then decide whether the resulting concentration fits your ability and willingness to tolerate losses. The SEC’s guidance supports an individual allocation decision, not a fixed sector cap.

Why a single-sector limit cannot be universal

Asset allocation is personal. Investor.gov explains that the mix of investments should reflect an investor’s time horizon and risk tolerance. Someone investing for a goal several decades away may be able to withstand larger short-term declines than someone who will need the money soon. Two people with the same income and account balance can therefore have different sensible allocations.

The same principle applies inside the stock portion of a portfolio. Diversification works at two levels: across asset categories, such as stocks, bonds and cash, and within each category, including different industries and sectors. The SEC’s beginner guide describes this as a portfolio being “diversified at two levels: between asset categories and within asset categories.”

Sector concentration can make a portfolio more volatile because companies in one industry often respond to the same economic, regulatory, interest-rate or commodity conditions. The SEC describes a fund concentrated in a sector, industry or geographic area as potentially less diversified and more volatile than a fund without that concentration. That is a risk description, not a prediction that every concentrated position will lose money.

Calculate your true sector exposure

Use the whole portfolio as the denominator. Include taxable brokerage accounts, retirement accounts and other investment accounts that are part of the same goal or household plan. Do not assess a sector fund in isolation if you also own the same companies directly or through another fund.

  1. List direct holdings. Record each individual stock and assign it to the sector used by your brokerage, fund provider or another consistent classification system.
  2. Look through every fund. Review current holdings, sector weights and the date of the disclosure for each ETF or mutual fund. A fund’s name alone does not reveal how much of your portfolio ultimately depends on a particular sector.
  3. Aggregate overlapping companies. If a broad-market fund, a sector fund and an individual stock all own the same company, add those exposures. Overlap can make a portfolio more concentrated than its account screens suggest.
  4. Divide by total portfolio value. A simple calculation is: sector exposure ÷ total portfolio value × 100. Repeat the calculation for every sector with a material position.
  5. Record the date. Fund holdings change, and market prices change every trading day. A percentage based on an old holdings snapshot may no longer describe your current exposure.

For example, suppose a $100,000 portfolio has $12,000 in individual technology stocks, $8,000 of technology companies inside a broad-market fund and $5,000 in a technology-sector ETF. The estimated technology exposure is $25,000, or 25% of the total portfolio, before considering any additional overlap or classification differences. The calculation is illustrative; it is not a recommended allocation.

Put the percentage in the context of your plan

Time horizon

Your time horizon is the period until you need to spend the money. A near-term home purchase, tuition payment or retirement withdrawal generally leaves less time to recover from a sector-specific decline than a distant goal. A long horizon does not remove concentration risk, but it can change how much short-term volatility you can reasonably accept.

Risk tolerance and risk capacity

Risk tolerance is your willingness to endure losses; risk capacity is your financial ability to do so. Consider both. A person may feel comfortable with volatility but still lack the cash reserves, stable income or flexibility needed to absorb a large fall. Conversely, a person with substantial resources may have the capacity for risk but dislike seeing a concentrated position fluctuate.

The goal funded by the portfolio

Separate money by purpose. A sector position intended for a flexible, long-term objective may be easier to hold through a downturn than money earmarked for an unavoidable expense. The more essential and closer the goal, the more important it is to examine whether concentration could jeopardize it.

Your overall stock, bond and cash mix

Sector exposure is only one layer of allocation. The SEC’s 2021 municipal-bond bulletin gives an illustrative asset-category mix of 50% stocks, 40% bonds and 10% cash. That example shows how an investor might divide broad asset categories; it is not a recommendation and it does not establish that any particular percentage of stocks should be placed in one sector.

A fund wrapper does not automatically diversify you

A mutual fund or ETF can hold hundreds of securities and still be narrowly focused. Investor.gov cautions: “But a mutual fund or ETF won’t necessarily provide diversification, especially if it is narrowly focused (such as on one industry sector).” Read the fund’s objective, holdings and sector breakdown rather than assuming the wrapper makes the exposure broad.

Single-sector fund

A single-sector fund is designed to emphasize one industry group. It can provide deliberate exposure, but it also links more of the portfolio to common sector risks. Check whether you already own its largest holdings elsewhere.

Broad-market fund

A broad-market fund usually spreads exposure across multiple sectors, but its largest companies can still create meaningful exposure to one industry. “Broad” does not mean that overlap is impossible; it means the fund’s mandate is not limited to one sector.

Several funds together

Holding multiple funds does not guarantee diversification. Two funds may own many of the same companies, or a broad fund may overlap heavily with a sector fund. Use current holdings and weights to calculate the combined exposure.

Option What it provides What to check
Single-sector fund Concentrated exposure to one industry group Existing direct and fund holdings, sector-specific volatility and the role of the position in the total portfolio
Broad-market fund Exposure across multiple sectors within the fund’s mandate Largest holdings, current sector weights and overlap with other investments
Several funds combined Potentially wider exposure across mandates Look-through holdings, duplicate companies and the combined percentage of each sector

Decide whether the concentration fits

After calculating the exposure, test it against four questions:

  • Is the exposure intentional? If the percentage grew because one position rose in value, the current mix may no longer match your plan.
  • Could you tolerate a substantial decline? Consider the effect on the goal, not only the theoretical long-term return.
  • Would you still hold it after a bad news cycle? A concentration that causes panic selling may be riskier in practice than one you can hold calmly.
  • What would replace it? A change should be evaluated against the resulting stock, bond, cash and sector mix, not merely against the position being sold.

These questions do not produce a universal “safe” number. They help you determine whether the exposure is consistent with the allocation you chose for your circumstances.

Use rebalancing when market moves change the plan

Market gains can cause one sector to occupy a larger share of a portfolio than intended. The SEC identifies rebalancing as a way to return a portfolio to its chosen allocation after market movements change the mix. Rebalancing can involve directing new contributions, reducing an oversized position or adding to other holdings.

There is no single SEC-required calendar or percentage band for rebalancing. Set a review method that fits your plan, such as checking after major life changes or at a schedule you can follow consistently. When reviewing, compare the current look-through exposure with your written target and ask whether the target still reflects your horizon and risk tolerance.

Account for fees, taxes and trading mechanics

Changing a sector position can create transaction costs, fund expenses or tax consequences. The cited SEC guidance supports considering fees and tax effects when comparing options, but it does not establish a universally appropriate fee threshold or provide individualized tax advice.

Before trading in a taxable account, determine whether selling would realize a gain or loss and whether the resulting tax bill would alter the benefit of the change. In a retirement account, tax treatment may differ by account type. If the consequences are significant or unclear, obtain advice from a qualified tax or investment professional who can review your circumstances.

Common mistakes that inflate or hide concentration

  • Using one account as the denominator. A sector may look small in a brokerage account but large after retirement accounts are included.
  • Counting a fund by its name. Read current holdings and sector data instead of assuming a label tells you the full exposure.
  • Ignoring duplicate companies. Overlapping funds can make several apparently different investments depend on the same businesses.
  • Relying on stale disclosures. Holdings and weights change; note the disclosure date and update the calculation.
  • Confusing asset classes with sectors. A 50% stock, 40% bond and 10% cash illustration describes asset categories, not a limit for one industry.
  • Choosing a percentage before defining the goal. A number detached from horizon, risk and purpose is not a complete allocation decision.

Two illustrative calculations

Direct stock plus fund overlap

Assume a $60,000 portfolio contains $6,000 in an individual health-care company, $9,000 in a sector fund whose current holdings are 70% health care, and $30,000 in a broad fund whose holdings are 12% health care. The estimated health-care exposure is $6,000 + ($9,000 × 0.70) + ($30,000 × 0.12) = $16,500, or 27.5% of the portfolio. The remaining $15,000 may be in other assets, so the calculation should be expanded to cover all holdings and sectors.

Drift after a price increase

Suppose a $10,000 sector position in a $100,000 portfolio rises to $18,000 while the rest of the portfolio remains at $90,000. The total is now $108,000 and the sector represents about 16.7%, even though no trade occurred. You can compare that new percentage with your chosen allocation and then consider contributions, sales or other changes, including their tax and fee effects.

A practical decision worksheet

  1. Write down the goal, target date and whether the money is essential.
  2. List every account and its current value.
  3. Download or review each fund’s latest holdings and sector breakdown.
  4. Calculate direct, indirect and overlapping exposure for each sector.
  5. Document your stock, bond and cash mix.
  6. Assess both willingness and ability to withstand a sector decline.
  7. Compare the current mix with the allocation you selected for the goal.
  8. If it no longer fits, evaluate rebalancing through contributions or trades after considering costs and taxes.
  9. Record the decision and the information date so the next review is comparable.

What the official guidance does—and does not—say

The SEC’s investor education materials establish the principles: allocation depends on personal circumstances; diversification should occur across and within asset categories; a narrowly focused fund may not diversify; and rebalancing can address portfolio drift. They do not establish a universal percentage for one sector, a guaranteed volatility level, a required review interval or a sector-return forecast. Treat any precise cap presented as a personal rule or a source-specific policy, not as an SEC standard.
