There is no universally correct gold allocation. The World Gold Council’s 2026 market primer uses 5% as an example for a well-balanced portfolio and discusses a 2%–10% range depending on an investor’s objectives. Those figures are historical-model starting points, not a regulator’s standard, a guarantee, or personal financial advice.

The right percentage depends on what you already own, why you want gold, how much volatility you can tolerate, how soon you may need the money, and whether your exposure is physical bullion, a physically backed exchange-traded fund (ETF), or another vehicle.

What the 2%–10% range actually means

The World Gold Council’s “Gold Market Primer: Market size and structure” (2026) presents 5% as a strategic allocation example for a well-balanced hypothetical portfolio. The same material describes allocations from 2% to 10% depending on objectives. This is industry research from the World Gold Council, not a consensus rule for every household.

Its companion report, “Gold as a strategic asset: 2026 edition,” states that the “optimal” amount varies according to individual asset-allocation decisions. In practical terms, a portfolio already concentrated in equities and lacking diversifiers may have a different role for gold from a portfolio that already contains bonds, commodities, real assets, or a gold fund.

Think of 2%–10% as a discussion range rather than a target you must reach. A small position may be intended to diversify risk without materially changing the portfolio. A larger position makes gold a more influential source of gains and losses and therefore requires stronger conviction in its role, as well as a willingness to accept periods when it trails other assets.

What the historical model found

The World Gold Council’s “Portfolio impact – Risk/reward profile” (published February 4, 2026) tested 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10% gold allocations in a hypothetical US-dollar portfolio. Monthly data ran from December 31, 2005, through December 31, 2025. Gold was funded by proportionally reducing the portfolio’s other assets, rather than by adding a new source of capital.

For the 5% case, the report compares annualised returns for portfolios with no gold and with 5% gold:

Measurement period No gold 5% gold
3 years 14.1% annualised 13.1% annualised
5 years 7.2% annualised 6.6% annualised
10 years 8.4% annualised 8.0% annualised
20 years 7.0% annualised 6.7% annualised

In that comparison, the 5% gold portfolio also had lower annualised volatility and lower maximum drawdowns in every period shown. The report does not establish the numerical size of each volatility or drawdown difference in the figures above, and the results are simulations, not forecasts.

Several assumptions matter. The test used one selected mix of equity, fixed-income, and alternative indexes, one measurement window, US-dollar returns, and a particular way of funding gold. Changing the portfolio, currency, dates, or risk measure can change the outcome. A historical result therefore cannot prove that every investor benefits from 5% gold or that gold will reduce losses in the next downturn.

Why investors consider gold

Diversification

Gold’s relationship with shares and bonds changes over time. The World Gold Council’s “Gold’s key attributes – Diversification” analysis describes varying behavior during crises and recoveries rather than a permanently fixed correlation. That changing relationship is the reason investors may use gold as a diversifier, not evidence that it will offset every stock or bond decline.

A store-of-value objective

Some investors want an asset they view as a long-term store of value or as an alternative to financial assets. That objective is different from trying to profit from a short-term price move. A store-of-value allocation may be held through several market cycles, while a trading position depends on timing and can be exposed to sharp reversals.

A crisis hedge, with limits

Gold is not a guaranteed short-term hedge. The World Gold Council’s separate commodity analysis, “Gold: The most effective commodity investment – 2026 edition” (August 11, 2026), uses a hypothetical portfolio of 70% equities and 30% fixed income with monthly US-dollar data through June 30, 2026. It notes that gold has underperformed over some shorter rolling periods. That analysis is separate from the strategic-asset test ending December 31, 2025, so its results should not be combined with the table above as if they were one experiment.

A practical way to choose your percentage

The following checklist helps translate the broad range into a portfolio decision without pretending to calculate a personalized recommendation.

1. Map your current exposures

  • List your equity, bond, cash, property, commodity, alternative, and gold holdings.
  • Check fund documents for embedded gold or broad-commodity exposure; an existing holding may mean you already have more gold sensitivity than its name suggests.
  • Decide whether the gold allocation will replace part of another asset, as in the World Gold Council model, or be funded from new savings. The risk effect is different.

2. Define the job gold must perform

  • Diversification: you may prefer a modest position whose main purpose is to change portfolio behavior when other assets move together.
  • Store of value: you may be prepared to hold through periods of weak relative performance.
  • Short-term trade: this is a timing decision, not the same as a strategic allocation, and it can produce a very different risk profile.

3. Match the position to your risk capacity

Gold can fall, remain flat, or lag shares and bonds for extended periods. A larger percentage makes those outcomes more consequential for your overall results. Consider both your emotional tolerance for underperformance and your financial capacity to leave the money invested during a long weak spell.

4. Consider the time horizon and liquidity need

Money needed for near-term spending generally should not depend on an uncertain commodity price. A strategic gold allocation is easier to evaluate when the rest of the portfolio and your emergency reserves can support a long holding period. The amount and timing of your future withdrawals also affect how much price volatility you can accept.

5. Check whether the allocation is still intentional

Gold’s price can move independently of the assets used to fund it. If you set a percentage, decide in advance how you will monitor drift and whether you will rebalance. Rebalancing rules are personal portfolio choices; the World Gold Council’s studies do not prescribe a schedule for individual investors.

Illustrative allocation choices

These examples show how the same research range can correspond to different objectives. They are not suitability recommendations.

Illustrative position Possible role What to recognize
About 2% A limited diversifier for someone who wants only a small change to the existing mix The effect on total-portfolio returns and drawdowns may be relatively small; the position can still lose value.
About 5% A middle-of-the-range strategic example for a well-balanced hypothetical portfolio This is the World Gold Council’s 2026 example, not a universal optimum.
About 7.5%–10% A more prominent allocation for objectives that place greater weight on diversification or a store-of-value role Gold’s own volatility and periods of underperformance have a larger effect on the whole portfolio.

Ways to hold gold

The World Gold Council’s 2026 market primer identifies bars and coins, physically backed ETFs, and over-the-counter (OTC) holdings among investor routes. They are different exposures and ownership arrangements, not interchangeable products.

Route Gold-price exposure Custody and access Costs, taxes, and account rules
Physical bars or coins Direct ownership of bullion, subject to the metal’s price and any premium or discount You arrange delivery or storage and may be able to take possession Premiums, storage, insurance, resale terms, taxes, and permitted accounts vary by product and jurisdiction; a complete current comparison was not stated in the 2026 primer.
Physically backed ETF Designed to track physical gold held for the fund, less fund expenses and tracking effects Trades through a securities account; the fund’s custody structure replaces personal storage Expense ratios, brokerage costs, tax treatment, and account eligibility vary by fund and country; not stated as a universal schedule in the cited material.
OTC holding Terms depend on the specific privately negotiated arrangement Trading, settlement, and counterparty arrangements are contractual Fees, liquidity, documentation, tax treatment, and counterparty risk depend on the agreement and jurisdiction; not stated as a standard package in the primer.

Do not treat gold-mining shares or a broad commodity fund as the same thing as direct physical-gold ownership. Mining companies add business, equity-market, management, and operating risks; broad funds may hold several commodities. They can serve different purposes from a gold allocation.

Due diligence before buying physical bullion

If you choose coins or bars, compare the category on more than the quoted spot price. Verify the seller’s authenticity and sourcing practices, the premium over the metal price, buyback terms, delivery arrangements, storage and insurance, and the rules that apply where you live. No particular dealer, listing, or storage provider is established by the available evidence, so a category-level comparison is more defensible than a product recommendation.

Taxes, accounts, and implementation limits

Tax outcomes can differ according to country, account type, holding period, and whether the exposure is physical, fund-based, or contractual. The available 2026 material does not provide a complete jurisdiction-specific tax or product-fee comparison. Before acting, check the current rules for your residence and account, and confirm whether a proposed vehicle is actually permitted.

Implementation also affects liquidity. A security that trades during market hours may be easier to price and sell than personally stored bullion, while physical ownership may provide possession that a fund does not. Neither feature determines the right percentage by itself; it must fit the purpose you assigned to gold.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Copying 5% mechanically: the figure is a model example for a well-balanced hypothetical portfolio, not an instruction for every investor.
  • Confusing market ownership with portfolio advice: the primer estimates that bars and coins represent 21% of above-ground gold holdings, or about 47,000 tonnes. That describes market holdings, not a recommended share of an investor’s portfolio.
  • Assuming a hedge works every time: historical crisis and recovery behavior varies, and gold has underperformed in some shorter periods.
  • Ignoring embedded exposure: a fund or managed account may already contain gold or commodities.
  • Comparing unlike vehicles: bullion, a physically backed ETF, an OTC contract, a mining stock, and a broad commodity fund carry different custody, liquidity, counterparty, and operating risks.
  • Using a headline return as a forecast: the reported annualised figures are historical simulations with specified dates, indexes, currency, and funding assumptions.

Bottom line for a portfolio decision

Start by treating 2%–10% as a range for discussion and 5% as a 2026 World Gold Council example, not as a universal answer. Select a percentage only after identifying your current asset mix, objective, time horizon, liquidity needs, tolerance for underperformance, and preferred holding route. Then verify the vehicle’s custody, costs, taxes, and account rules in your jurisdiction. Historical model results can explain why gold is considered, but they cannot determine the allocation that is suitable for you.
