There is no universally correct percentage of a portfolio for Meta stock. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says an appropriate allocation depends on your goal, time horizon and risk tolerance—not on a one-size-fits-all formula. A Meta position should therefore be judged against your complete portfolio, including funds and other accounts, and reduced or rebalanced if its company-specific risk exceeds what you can accept.
Why no fixed Meta percentage exists
The SEC’s investor guidance says, “There is no single asset allocation model that is right for every financial goal.” Your suitable mix changes with when you need the money, how much loss you can financially withstand and how much volatility you are willing to accept. Those variables differ between investors, and they can change for the same investor as a goal approaches.

That means a percentage that may be tolerable for a long-term retirement account could be unsuitable for money needed for a house deposit in a few years. It also means a position that felt manageable before a job change, debt increase or major life expense may no longer fit your plan.

The SEC’s March 31, 2026 investor bulletin likewise describes asset mix as a function of personal risk tolerance and investing timeframe. It does not establish a Meta-specific cap. The official starting points are the SEC’s Introduction to Investing and its guidance on asset allocation and diversification.

What a Meta position adds to your risk
Buying one company creates company-specific exposure. The SEC puts the issue plainly: “You could buy shares of a single company, but then your financial performance will depend exclusively on how that single company’s stock performs.” A broad portfolio can still fall, but a single-company holding makes the outcome of that company disproportionately important to your account.
This is different from deciding how much of your portfolio belongs in stocks as an asset category. A stock allocation spreads market exposure across companies; a Meta allocation concentrates part of that stock allocation in one issuer. The relevant question is not only “How much do I own?” but also “How much of my financial future depends on this one stock?”
Concentration can arise without a large direct purchase. A fund may already hold Meta, and several funds can own many of the same large companies. Counting only the shares in your brokerage account can therefore understate your exposure. Include workplace plans, individual retirement accounts, taxable accounts and fund holdings when you measure the position.
A decision framework for choosing a position size
| Factor | Questions to answer | How it affects the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Goal and time horizon | What is the money for, and when might you need it? | A shorter horizon generally calls for less volatile holdings than a longer horizon, according to the SEC. |
| Risk capacity | Could your finances withstand a large decline without forcing a sale? | The ability to absorb losses is separate from the hoped-for return. |
| Risk willingness | Could you stay invested through a severe drop? | Willingness to tolerate loss matters alongside financial capacity. |
| Total exposure | How much Meta do your funds and other accounts already own? | Overlapping holdings can make the portfolio more concentrated than it appears. |
| Rebalancing plan | What event will make you trim or add to the position? | A preset calendar or threshold rule reduces decisions driven by recent performance. |
| Tax and trading impact | Would selling create taxable gains or meaningful transaction costs? | Taxes and fees can change which rebalancing method is most practical. |
1. Start with the goal and its deadline
Write down the purpose of the account and the date the money may be needed. A near-term obligation gives you less time to wait for a recovery after a market decline. A distant goal may allow more volatility, but a long horizon does not automatically make a concentrated company position appropriate.
Separate money by goal where possible. Retirement savings, an emergency reserve and a planned tuition payment have different time horizons and should not be treated as one undifferentiated pool. Your Meta percentage can be acceptable for one goal and excessive for another even when the dollar holding is identical.

2. Assess capacity and willingness to lose
Risk capacity is the financial ability to absorb a loss: stable income, cash reserves, debt obligations and the flexibility to postpone spending all matter. Risk willingness is your behavioral ability to remain invested when prices fall. The SEC defines risk tolerance in terms of both the ability and willingness to lose some or all of the original investment in exchange for potentially greater returns.
Do not use a questionnaire score or a strong appetite for growth as proof that a concentrated position fits. Someone may be willing to accept volatility but unable to recover financially from a large loss, or able to bear a loss but likely to sell in panic. The position must fit both dimensions.

List each direct holding and the top positions of every fund. Then estimate Meta’s total share of the portfolio, rather than treating each account separately. Include employer plans and other investment accounts if they are part of the money supporting the same goals.
The SEC warns that a narrowly focused fund may not provide adequate diversification and recommends checking fund holdings. Two funds with different names can still overlap heavily. A direct Meta purchase layered on top of overlapping funds can create a much larger single-company exposure than your trade confirmation suggests.
4. Choose an allocation rule before reacting to performance
Set a target based on your goals and tolerance, then define what would trigger a review. A rule might use a calendar date, a percentage-point threshold or both. The point is to decide in advance how you will respond when the position rises, falls or becomes uncomfortable.

A written rule also prevents a recent rally from becoming an accidental reason to buy more and a recent decline from becoming an accidental reason to sell everything. Revisit the rule when your goal, income, liabilities or time horizon changes—not only when the share price moves.

How diversification changes the answer
Diversification has two dimensions. You can spread money across asset categories, such as stocks and bonds, and you can spread each category across different investments and sectors. Owning several funds does not guarantee either kind of diversification if their holdings overlap or if each fund is narrowly focused.
The SEC’s beginner guide illustrates the principle with stock portfolios: four or five individual stocks are not diversified, while a dozen carefully selected stocks are offered as an example of greater diversification. These are educational examples, not a required stock count, a guarantee against loss or a recommendation for a Meta allocation.
For a Meta decision, ask whether the company is one holding among many genuinely different exposures or whether it is repeated through multiple funds. A broad fund may reduce the effect of any one company, while a technology-sector or similarly narrow fund may leave substantial company and sector concentration. The fund’s actual holdings, not its label, determine the overlap you need to count.
What to do if Meta becomes too large
Suppose price gains or new purchases leave Meta above the risk level you selected. The SEC’s rebalancing guidance describes three practical approaches. Your choice depends on taxes, fees, account type and how quickly you need to reduce the concentration.

Sell part of the holding
Selling enough shares to return toward your target directly reduces the position. Before placing an order, check whether the sale would realize a taxable gain, whether the account has special tax rules and what trading costs apply. A tax bill can make a gradual approach preferable to an immediate full adjustment, but taxes should not be the only reason to retain a risk level you cannot tolerate.
Direct new money elsewhere
You can leave the existing Meta shares untouched and send new contributions to underweighted investments. This changes the portfolio’s percentages as the rest grows, without selling the concentrated holding. It may take longer, so it is most useful when the excess is modest and your target can be reached within the time available.
Change future contributions
Workplace-plan elections and automatic investment instructions can be redirected toward areas that are below your chosen allocation. This can be combined with a partial sale or used alone. Verify that the new investments do not simply recreate the same Meta exposure through another fund.
Use a consistent review schedule
The SEC describes both calendar-based and threshold-based rebalancing and notes that rebalancing generally works best relatively infrequently. A calendar review might occur at a chosen interval; a threshold review occurs when an allocation moves beyond a predetermined band. Neither method predicts prices. They are ways to keep the portfolio aligned with your plan instead of letting one holding dictate the risk.

The SEC guide gives an example of an allocation moving from 60% stocks to 80% after market gains. The example demonstrates why portfolios can drift; it does not say that 60% or 80% is right for you, nor does it establish an appropriate percentage for Meta. Similarly, the guide’s four-or-five-stock and dozen-stock examples explain diversification concepts, not a required number of holdings.
Use percentages to measure your own plan, not to manufacture certainty. If you cannot explain why a target fits the money’s purpose and the loss you can withstand, the target is not yet decision-ready.
A checklist before buying or trimming
- Identify the goal funded by the account and the date you may need the money.
- Record your ability to absorb a major loss without selling for an urgent expense.
- Record your willingness to remain invested through a major decline.
- Calculate Meta exposure across direct shares, funds and every account supporting that goal.
- Inspect fund holdings for overlap and narrow sector concentration.
- Write the target allocation and the calendar or threshold that will trigger review.
- Estimate tax consequences, account restrictions and transaction costs before rebalancing.
- Review the plan after a change in income, debt, goal date or risk tolerance.
When professional advice may be worthwhile
A qualified financial professional can help when accounts, tax lots, employer stock, withdrawal dates or competing goals make the calculation difficult. The SEC advises checking a professional’s credentials and disciplinary history before engaging them. A professional can help apply the framework to your circumstances; that does not turn a generic Meta percentage into an SEC-approved answer.

Bottom line
Choose Meta’s share of your portfolio by working backward from the goal, time horizon and loss you can actually withstand, then count direct and indirect exposure across the entire portfolio. Set a written allocation and rebalancing rule, and reduce concentration through partial sales, new contributions or future contribution changes when the position exceeds the risk your plan allows. The right answer is personal; the SEC’s guidance supports a process, not a universal number.
