How Much of Your Paycheck Should You Invest in Your 20s?

A sensible long-term retirement benchmark is to work toward investing 12% to 15% of your annual pre-tax pay, including employer contributions. If that is not affordable yet, start with an amount you can maintain—Investor.gov gives 5%, 10%, or a fixed amount each pay period as examples—and increase it as your cash flow improves. These are rules of thumb, not a personalized prescription.

Why there is no single correct percentage

Your 20s can include entry-level pay, student loans, rent increases, irregular work, family support, or a first serious emergency fund. The percentage that is responsible for one person may be unrealistic for another. Your rate also depends on whether an employer contributes money, how expensive your debt is, and how much cash you need for near-term risks.

The commonly quoted retirement targets are planning benchmarks, not studies showing what every person in their 20s actually invests. Vanguard’s current guidance uses a 12%–15% range of pay, including employer contributions. Fidelity’s guidance uses 15% of pre-tax income annually, also including the employer match. Investor.gov uses 5%, 10%, or an affordable fixed amount as examples of regular investing. None of those figures guarantees a particular retirement outcome.

First, separate your paycheck deduction from your total savings rate

Employer contributions make the headline percentages easy to misunderstand. A 15% total retirement rate does not necessarily mean 15% is deducted from your paycheck. The Vanguard and Fidelity benchmarks count both your contribution and eligible employer money.

A simple illustration

Suppose your annual pre-tax pay is $48,000. You contribute 8%, or $3,840. If your employer contributes another 4% of pay, that is $1,920. Your total retirement savings rate is 12%, even though your own payroll deduction is 8%. The numbers are hypothetical; your plan’s matching formula, limits, and vesting rules control the real calculation.

How to calculate your own rate

  1. Find your gross, or pre-tax, pay for the year. If you are paid hourly or irregularly, use a reasonable annual estimate and update it when your income changes.
  2. Add your own annual workplace-plan contributions and any contributions you make to another retirement account.
  3. Add the employer contributions that actually qualify under your plan. Do not count a possible match until you have checked the plan formula and eligibility rules.
  4. Divide total annual retirement contributions by annual pre-tax pay, then multiply by 100.

Track the employee-only percentage separately. It tells you what is leaving each paycheck; the combined percentage tells you how much is being saved for retirement.

The main benchmarks, with their limits

Source Figure What it means
Investor.gov 5% or 10% of income, or an affordable fixed amount each pay period Examples of regular investing; not a claim that either percentage is optimal for everyone
Vanguard 12%–15% of pay, including employer contributions Long-term retirement-saving benchmark
Fidelity 15% of pre-tax income annually, including the employer match Long-term retirement-saving benchmark
Internal Revenue Service $24,500, or 100% of compensation if less, for 2026 Basic annual elective-deferral limit for covered workplace plans; a legal ceiling, not a recommended target

The 2026 IRS amount applies to elective deferrals to 401(k), 403(b), and similar covered workplace plans. It is separate from the question of how much you should save. Someone earning less than $24,500 can still be on track with a much smaller contribution, while a higher earner may reach the limit before reaching a personally appropriate retirement rate.

A practical order of priorities in your 20s

1. Make the contribution sustainable

Start with an amount that fits after essential bills and minimum debt payments. Investor.gov describes regular contributions as the key behavior and gives 5%, 10%, or an affordable fixed amount per pay period as examples. A contribution that remains in place is more useful than an ambitious rate you cancel after two months.

2. Build emergency cash and address expensive debt

Investor.gov places control of credit-card debt and an emergency fund alongside long-term investing. Fidelity likewise recommends building emergency savings and paying higher-interest debt before stepping up retirement contributions. The exact cash reserve and debt rate depend on your circumstances, but the reason is straightforward: an unexpected bill or compounding high-interest balance can force you to sell investments or borrow again.

3. Check the employer contribution

If your job offers a 401(k), 403(b), or another defined-contribution plan, read the benefits documents to find the match formula, eligibility date, vesting rules, and any per-pay-period conditions. Contributing enough to receive available matching money is a common consideration when the budget permits, but the sources do not establish that a match should override every urgent cash need or high-cost debt.

4. Raise the rate as your income rises

When you receive a raise, bonus, or debt payoff, direct part of the additional cash to retirement before it becomes part of your regular spending. Fidelity specifically recommends increasing contributions gradually after emergency savings and higher-interest debt are addressed. A one-percentage-point increase can be easier to maintain than an immediate jump to a distant target.

How to use a workplace retirement plan

SEC guidance for a new employee is practical: identify the workplace plan, select a paycheck contribution, choose an investment, and review the employer contribution and costs.

  1. Locate the plan. Ask human resources or check the benefits portal for a 401(k), 403(b), or other defined-contribution plan and the date you become eligible.
  2. Read the match language. Find the percentage of pay the employer matches, whether matching requires your own contribution each pay period, and whether the money vests over time.
  3. Set the payroll percentage. Begin at the amount your budget can sustain. If you can do so without jeopardizing emergency cash or debt payments, consider reaching the contribution level needed for the available match.
  4. Select an investment. Review the plan’s choices, diversification, risk level, and fees. Leaving money in a default option without checking what it owns or costs may not fit your time horizon.
  5. Confirm the first deduction. Compare your pay stub with the election you made. Payroll errors, eligibility delays, or a contribution that starts in a later pay period can otherwise go unnoticed.
  6. Review annually. Recheck your percentage, investment mix, fees, employer formula, and compensation after a raise, job change, or plan update.

What to do when there is no workplace plan

Investor.gov identifies an IRA as another route for long-term saving. Eligibility rules and annual contribution limits must be checked for your income, tax situation, and the specific year. Without an employer contribution, calculate your employee savings rate on its own; do not assume a workplace match exists.

Choose investments inside the account

Contributing the right amount does not automatically produce a suitable portfolio. Investor.gov says diversification may reduce investment risk, and SEC guidance tells savers to review investment choices and costs. Fidelity’s age-oriented guidance points to a significant stock allocation for younger long-term savers, but neither source provides enough personal information to prescribe one allocation for every person in their 20s.

Questions to ask when reviewing choices

  • How long is the money likely to remain invested before you need it?
  • Can you tolerate a substantial temporary decline without abandoning the plan?
  • Does the option hold a diversified mix rather than a narrow company or sector?
  • What expense ratios, administrative charges, or transaction costs apply?
  • Are you spreading contributions across investments in a way that matches your stated risk tolerance?

Stocks can fluctuate sharply, including during periods when your account balance is falling. Diversification can reduce concentration risk, but it cannot eliminate losses or guarantee a return.

Three contribution paths for common situations

You can afford only a small amount

Choose a fixed dollar amount or a modest percentage that survives your monthly budget. Automate it through payroll or a recurring account transfer, then schedule an increase when your pay rises or a temporary expense ends. The Investor.gov examples of 5% and 10% are starting illustrations, not minimum requirements.

You have a match but also expensive debt

Read the plan documents and compare the value of the available match with the interest cost and risk of your debt. Keep required payments current, preserve necessary emergency cash, and make a deliberate choice about how much additional retirement saving is affordable. There is no universal formula in the cited guidance that resolves every debt-and-match trade-off.

Your income changes from month to month

Use a conservative annual income estimate and revisit it quarterly. A fixed dollar contribution may be easier to manage than a percentage when pay varies. In high-income months, direct part of the surplus to retirement or emergency savings instead of permanently increasing expenses before you know the income will continue.

You started late in your 20s

Do not try to repair a shortfall with a contribution you cannot maintain. Start now, capture any available employer contribution when feasible, and increase the rate in planned steps after your cash reserve and high-interest debt are under control. The long-term target remains a direction for future savings, not a reason to destabilize your current finances.

How to avoid common mistakes

  • Counting only the paycheck deduction: add qualifying employer money when evaluating your total rate.
  • Confusing the IRS limit with a goal: the 2026 $24,500 limit is a legal elective-deferral ceiling for covered plans, not an amount everyone should contribute.
  • Assuming every match is the same: formulas, eligibility, vesting, and payroll rules vary by plan.
  • Ignoring fees: two investments with similar holdings can produce different net outcomes when costs differ.
  • Investing emergency money in volatile assets: a short-term cash need can force a sale at an unfavorable time.
  • Stopping after a market decline: review risk tolerance and diversification before changing a long-term plan based on one period.
  • Failing to update elections: a new job, raise, marriage, move, or debt payoff can change what is affordable.

An annual checkup you can complete in 20 minutes

  1. Read your latest pay stub and calculate the employee contribution rate.
  2. Check the plan statement for employer contributions and vesting information.
  3. Recalculate total savings as a percentage of current pre-tax pay.
  4. Confirm that your emergency savings still matches your essential expenses and that high-interest debt is being reduced.
  5. Review each investment’s diversification, risk, and fees.
  6. Compare your current rate with the 12%–15% long-term benchmark, while keeping the Investor.gov approach of an affordable starting amount in mind.
  7. Choose one specific increase, if affordable, and record when you will review it again.

Bottom line

For many people in their 20s, 12%–15% of pre-tax pay including employer contributions is a useful destination. The right first step may be 5%, 10%, or a fixed amount you can reliably invest. Protect emergency cash, address higher-interest debt, understand your plan’s match and costs, and increase contributions as your income allows. Your own benefits documents and financial circumstances—not a universal percentage—determine the appropriate pace.
