How Much Must You Earn to Contribute to an IRA?

There is no minimum salary for IRA contributions. Your maximum is generally the lesser of your eligible compensation or the 2026 IRA limit of $7,500—or $8,600 if you are 50 or older.

You do not need to earn a specific minimum salary to contribute to an IRA. You generally need taxable compensation—such as wages, tips, commissions, or net self-employment income—for the tax year. Your maximum contribution is usually the lesser of your eligible compensation or the annual IRA limit.

For 2026, the regular IRA contribution limit is $7,500. If you are age 50 or older by December 31, 2026, you may contribute up to $8,600, including the $1,100 catch-up contribution. These limits apply to your combined traditional and Roth IRA contributions.

How much must you earn to contribute?

There is no minimum earnings threshold of $7,500. That amount is the maximum regular contribution for 2026, not the amount you must earn before you can contribute.

For example, if you have $2,000 of eligible compensation in 2026, you can generally contribute up to $2,000 to your IRA. If you earn $7,500 or more, you can generally contribute the full regular limit, subject to Roth IRA income restrictions and the shared limit for all of your IRAs.

Eligible compensation in 2026 Age Maximum total IRA contribution
$0 Any age $0, unless a spousal IRA rule applies
$500 Under 50 $500
$3,000 Under 50 $3,000
$7,500 Under 50 $7,500
$10,000 Under 50 $7,500
$10,000 50 or older $8,600

The IRS explains the compensation requirement in Publication 590-A. The annual dollar limits are also published by the IRS.

What counts as eligible compensation?

IRA eligibility is based on taxable compensation, not just any money that appears on your tax return. Compensation generally includes:

  • Wages and salaries
  • Tips
  • Commissions and bonuses
  • Professional fees
  • Net earnings from self-employment
  • Nontaxable combat pay
  • Certain taxable alimony or separate-maintenance payments under qualifying older divorce instruments
  • Certain taxable, non-tuition fellowship and stipend payments for graduate or postdoctoral study
  • Certain difficulty-of-care payments

If you are self-employed, the relevant amount is generally your net earnings from the business, adjusted for the deductible portion of self-employment tax and certain retirement-plan deductions. Gross business revenue is not automatically the amount you can use for IRA purposes.

Income that usually does not qualify

The following generally do not create IRA contribution eligibility by themselves:

  • Interest
  • Dividends
  • Capital gains
  • Rental income
  • Royalties
  • Pension or annuity income
  • Social Security benefits
  • Deferred compensation
  • Partnership income when your personal services are not a material income-producing factor

You can use money from investments or a pension to fund an IRA deposit, but that money does not become eligible compensation merely because it was used to make the contribution. You still need qualifying compensation or a spousal IRA.

Traditional IRA and Roth IRA rules are different

Traditional IRA

Eligible compensation determines whether you can contribute and how much. Your income and workplace-plan coverage generally affect whether the contribution is deductible.

That means a high earner with eligible compensation may still make a traditional IRA contribution even when the contribution is partly or entirely nondeductible. Nondeductible contributions generally must be reported on Form 8606 so you can track your after-tax basis.

For 2026, traditional IRA deduction phase-outs include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Filing status and workplace-plan situation 2026 modified AGI phase-out range
Single or head of household, covered by a workplace plan $81,000–$91,000
Married filing jointly, contributor covered by a workplace plan $129,000–$149,000
Married filing jointly, contributor not covered but spouse is covered $242,000–$252,000
Married filing separately, covered by a workplace plan Generally $0–$10,000

If neither spouse is covered by a workplace retirement plan, the traditional IRA deduction generally is not phased out based on income.

Roth IRA

Roth contributions are never deductible. In addition to having eligible compensation, you must meet the Roth IRA modified-adjusted-gross-income rules for a direct contribution.

For 2026, the direct Roth IRA contribution phase-outs are:

Filing status 2026 modified AGI phase-out range
Single or head of household $153,000–$168,000
Married filing jointly or qualifying surviving spouse $242,000–$252,000
Married filing separately, lived with spouse at any time during the year $0–$10,000

Within the applicable range, the permitted contribution is reduced. At or above the top of the range, you generally cannot make a direct Roth IRA contribution. This income test does not apply in the same way to whether you can make a traditional IRA contribution; it mainly determines deductibility for traditional contributions and direct eligibility for Roth contributions.

The traditional and Roth limits are shared

The 2026 limit is not $7,500 for a traditional IRA plus another $7,500 for a Roth IRA. It is the combined limit for all traditional and Roth IRAs owned by one person.

For example, if you are under 50 and contribute $4,000 to a traditional IRA, you have $3,500 of the regular 2026 limit left for a Roth IRA. The limit applies across your accounts, even if the accounts are held at different financial institutions.

How a spousal IRA works

A spouse with no personal compensation may still contribute to an IRA under the spousal IRA rules. The couple must:

  1. File a joint federal income tax return.
  2. Have enough compensation from the working spouse to cover both contributions.
  3. Keep the couple’s combined IRA contributions within the working spouse’s compensation after accounting for the working spouse’s own IRA contribution.

Each spouse must have a separate IRA. IRAs cannot be jointly owned.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, suppose one spouse earns $30,000 in 2026 and the other has no compensation. If they file jointly and both are under 50, they may generally contribute up to $7,500 to each spouse’s IRA—a combined $15,000—assuming no other restriction applies. The working spouse’s compensation is enough to support both contributions.

Does age or a 401(k) change the compensation rule?

There is no maximum age for contributing to either a traditional IRA or a Roth IRA. But age does not remove the compensation requirement. Someone over 70 still needs eligible compensation or must qualify through a spousal IRA. Turning 50 only makes the catch-up contribution available.

Having a 401(k) or another workplace retirement plan also does not automatically prevent IRA contributions. It may affect whether a traditional IRA contribution is deductible. Roth eligibility is determined separately using the Roth modified-AGI limits.

When can you make the contribution?

You can generally make an IRA contribution during the tax year or by that year’s federal tax-return due date, without extensions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 2025 contributions: generally due by April 15, 2026.
  • 2026 contributions: generally due by April 15, 2027.

If you contribute in early 2027 for 2026, tell the IRA provider that it is a 2026 contribution. Otherwise, the provider may treat it as a 2027 contribution. Check your account confirmation to make sure the contribution year is recorded correctly.

What happens if you contribute too much?

An excess contribution can trigger a 6% excise tax for each year the excess remains in the account. This can happen when you contribute more than your eligible compensation, exceed the combined annual limit, or make a direct Roth contribution when your income is too high.

Excess contributions can generally be corrected by withdrawing the excess and related earnings by the applicable deadline. Contact the IRA provider promptly; simply withdrawing the original deposit may not fully correct the issue if earnings must also be removed.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Treating $7,500 as a minimum. It is the 2026 regular maximum, not a required salary.
  2. Counting investment income as compensation. Interest, dividends, rent, and capital gains generally do not qualify.
  3. Assuming a 401(k) blocks IRA contributions. It usually affects deductibility, not the ability to contribute.
  4. Assuming high income blocks traditional IRA contributions. It may make the contribution nondeductible, but does not generally prohibit the contribution.
  5. Using separate limits for traditional and Roth IRAs. The limit is shared across both types.
  6. Forgetting to designate a prior-year contribution. A contribution made before the filing deadline can count for the previous year only if it is properly designated.

FAQ

Can I contribute to an IRA if I earn only $500?

Generally, yes. If the $500 is eligible compensation, your maximum contribution is usually $500. You cannot contribute the full annual limit unless you have at least that much eligible compensation, unless a spousal IRA rule applies.

Can I contribute to an IRA with no job?

You may be able to contribute without a traditional job if you have qualifying self-employment income or another type of eligible compensation. If you have no personal compensation, you may qualify for a spousal IRA if you file jointly and your spouse has enough compensation.

Can I contribute to an IRA using interest or capital gains?

You can use those funds as the cash source for the deposit, but interest and capital gains generally do not count as eligible compensation. You still need qualifying compensation or a spousal IRA.

Can a high earner contribute to a traditional IRA?

Generally, yes, if the person has eligible compensation and remains within the annual contribution limit. High income may make the contribution nondeductible. A nondeductible contribution generally must be reported on Form 8606.

Can I contribute to both a traditional IRA and a Roth IRA?

Yes, if you meet the applicable rules, but the combined contributions cannot exceed the annual limit. For 2026, the regular combined limit is $7,500, or $8,600 for someone age 50 or older by December 31.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there an age limit for IRA contributions?

No. There is no maximum age for contributing to a traditional or Roth IRA, but you still need eligible compensation or a qualifying spousal IRA.

The Bottom Line

You do not have to earn $7,500 to contribute to an IRA. For 2026, contribute up to the lesser of your eligible compensation and the applicable annual limit: $7,500 if you are under 50, or $8,600 if you are 50 or older by December 31. Confirm whether your income affects Roth eligibility or the deductibility of a traditional contribution, and remember that all of your traditional and Roth IRA contributions share one annual limit.
