About ₹62,500 to ₹72,900 a month before tax is a cautious first-year planning range for a ₹2.5 crore retirement corpus. It comes from withdrawing 3.0% to 3.5% annually: ₹7.5 lakh to ₹8.75 lakh a year, divided by 12. The range is a starting withdrawal, not guaranteed interest, a pension promise or an assurance that the corpus will last for life.
How the monthly figure is calculated
The arithmetic is transparent. A corpus of ₹2.5 crore equals ₹25,000,000. Applying an initial withdrawal rate gives the following gross withdrawals:

| Initial annual withdrawal rate | First-year annual withdrawal | Monthly equivalent | How conservative it is in the cited Indian study |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.0% | ₹7,50,000 | ₹62,500 | Lower end of the study’s suggested range |
| 3.5% | ₹8,75,000 | About ₹72,917 | Upper end; the study says the target should be no higher than 3.5% |
| 4.0% | ₹10,00,000 | About ₹83,333 | Above the cited range and not equally conservative for India |
The 3.0%–3.5% guidance comes from Rajan Raju and Ravi Saraogi’s chapter, “Balancing Acts: Safe Withdrawal Rates in the Indian Context,” in the PFRDA-hosted Pension Security in India: Progress and Prospects (indexed as published in 2025). The authors describe 3.0%–3.5% as more appropriate for Indian retirees and emphasize conservative rates for individual investors.

What “safe” means—and what it does not mean
A withdrawal rate is a spending rule applied to an invested portfolio. It is not a deposit rate that leaves the principal untouched. Your withdrawals may come from interest, dividends, realized gains or sales of investments; in a weak market, selling assets can reduce the units remaining and make later recovery harder.
The PFRDA-hosted chapter specifically warns that India lacks long country-specific return histories and formal studies comparable with the data available in some other markets. Popular international rates have therefore been adopted in the past. Its 3.0%–3.5% conclusion is best treated as research-based planning guidance with limitations, not a universal lifetime guarantee.
“Safe” also depends on the outcome you want. A plan that aims to preserve the entire ₹2.5 crore for heirs is different from one designed to spend most of it over a 25- or 30-year retirement. A retiree with rental income or a pension can withdraw less from the corpus than someone who must fund every expense from investments. The same percentage can be comfortable for one household and inadequate for another.

Sequence-of-returns risk
Two portfolios can earn the same average return over a decade yet produce different outcomes if one suffers losses at the beginning. Withdrawals made while prices are depressed force the portfolio to sell more units. A later recovery then applies to a smaller balance. The chapter highlights this early-retirement sequence risk and notes that higher equity exposure can increase the damage from early negative returns.

Inflation and purchasing power
₹62,500 today will not buy the same basket of goods later. If you increase withdrawals to maintain purchasing power, the rupee amount rises even when the corpus has not grown. If you keep withdrawals flat, inflation gradually reduces your real standard of living. A plan must state which of these outcomes it accepts.
Longevity
A 20-year horizon permits a different spending pattern from a 35-year horizon. Longer retirements provide more time for inflation, medical costs and a poor sequence of returns to compound. Your current age, expected retirement age and life expectancy are therefore essential inputs rather than details to fill in later.
Three withdrawal approaches to compare
Fixed percentage of the current balance
With this method, you withdraw a set percentage—such as 3.5%—of the portfolio’s value each year. Payments fall after a market decline and rise after gains, so the method reduces the chance of exhausting the account but creates an unpredictable income stream.
Fixed first-year amount, then inflation increases
You begin with ₹62,500 or about ₹72,917 per month, then raise the annual amount by inflation. This gives a more stable lifestyle budget but transfers more longevity and market risk to the portfolio. A severe early downturn may require a spending adjustment.

Flexible or guardrail withdrawals
You set a starting amount and pre-agree to reduce discretionary spending after a large fall, or to skip an inflation increase when returns are weak. Essential expenses can be separated from optional travel, gifts and upgrades. Flexibility is valuable because it avoids selling a fixed amount of assets in every market condition, but it requires the household to accept variable spending.
The chapter discusses dynamic withdrawals, reserves, inflation-adjusted returns and taxation. It also presents simulations using a 40:60 allocation in some cases; that modeled allocation is not a universal recommendation for every retiree.
How to test whether your expenses fit the corpus
Start with the spending your ₹2.5 crore must actually fund, rather than with the maximum percentage. List essential monthly costs, discretionary costs, annual premiums, home repairs, taxes, medical spending and support for dependants. Then identify reliable income outside the portfolio, such as a pension or rent, and subtract it from required spending.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Set the horizon. Enter your current age, planned retirement age and a conservative life-expectancy assumption. Include a longer horizon if a spouse may outlive you.
- Separate today’s expenses from retirement expenses. Remove costs that will end, such as a mortgage that will be repaid, and add likely healthcare, care-giving or insurance costs.
- Choose an inflation assumption. The National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) calculator asks users to use a long-term inflation assumption between 4% and 7%. This is a planning input, not a forecast. NISM also discusses the Reserve Bank of India’s 4%–6% monetary-policy target range.
- Model accumulation and retirement returns separately. Expected returns before retirement do not automatically apply after retirement, when the allocation and need for liquidity may differ.
- Enter current savings and retirement benefits. Include other investments, pensions and benefits rather than treating the ₹2.5 crore as the only resource if it is not.
- Run more than one withdrawal case. Compare 3.0%, 3.5% and a lower rate, and test a version in which spending is reduced after a market fall.
NISM’s illustration shows why inflation must be explicit: a 30-year-old spending ₹50,000 a month would need ₹2,16,097 a month at age 60 under its example’s 5% annual inflation assumption. That is an illustration of the calculator’s assumptions, not a universal prediction for every household.

Portfolio design, reserves and rebalancing
The withdrawal percentage cannot be separated from asset allocation. A portfolio concentrated in volatile growth assets may have higher long-term return potential but larger early losses. A predominantly fixed-income portfolio may fluctuate less while exposing you to reinvestment risk, inflation risk and the possibility that returns do not keep up with rising expenses.
Rather than selecting an allocation from the corpus figure alone, define the jobs your money must perform:
- Near-term spending bucket: money needed for the next several years should not depend entirely on selling volatile assets immediately after a market fall.
- Long-term growth bucket: assets with growth potential can help offset inflation over a long retirement, but their volatility must be tolerable.
- Contingency reserve: a separate amount for medical, family or home emergencies can prevent an unplanned sale of investments.
- Rebalancing rule: decide how and when the portfolio returns to its intended mix instead of making ad hoc changes after headlines.
These are planning functions, not a prescription for a particular product or percentage. Fees, tax treatment, liquidity and the risk of outliving the money all affect the result.
What you may receive after tax
The ₹62,500–₹72,900 figure is before tax. A net monthly amount cannot be calculated from the corpus alone because the tax result depends on what you sell or receive, the holding period and nature of gains, interest or dividends, other taxable income, deductions and the tax regime that applies to you.

The Income Tax Department’s assessment-year 2026–27 guidance distinguishes normal and special tax rates and sets out individual slabs and rebate rules. Applying one flat percentage reduction to the withdrawal would therefore be misleading. For a usable after-tax estimate, map each income source and gain to the applicable rules for the relevant financial year, then include taxes in the annual cash-flow plan.
Do not confuse a portfolio withdrawal with an NPS exit
A general 3.0%–3.5% withdrawal calculation is not an NPS withdrawal rule. National Pension System exit options depend on subscriber category, sector and the regulation in force.
A Press Information Bureau release dated 19 December 2025 describes notified amendments for NPS exits. For eligible non-government normal exits, it describes options that can permit up to 80% as a lump sum and require at least 20% as an annuity when the corpus is larger; the exact treatment varies by category and sector. An older Department of Financial Services NPS explainer still displays a 60% lump-sum and 40% annuity framework for normal exit.
Because those official pages are not aligned, verify the operative regulation for your subscriber category before making an NPS decision. Neither set of percentages establishes a safe monthly withdrawal rate for a separate ₹2.5 crore investment portfolio.
A practical annual review checklist
Review the plan at least once a year and after a major life or market event. Check:
- Whether essential spending has changed and whether non-portfolio income is still reliable.
- The portfolio’s current value, asset mix, liquidity and costs.
- How much of the next year’s spending is available without selling assets after a sharp fall.
- Whether inflation has eroded the planned lifestyle or medical reserve.
- Tax-law changes and the tax character of withdrawals.
- Whether a spouse, nominee or family member can access the accounts and understand the withdrawal rule.
If a decision involves a large allocation change, an NPS exit or an after-tax lifetime-income target, consult a SEBI-registered investment adviser. A tailored recommendation requires your age, retirement horizon, expenses, portfolio, other income and tax details; the corpus amount by itself is not enough.
Bottom line for a ₹2.5 crore corpus
Use about ₹62,500 a month as a 3.0% first-year withdrawal or about ₹72,900 a month at 3.5%, both before tax. Treat ₹83,333 a month at 4% as a more aggressive case, not as equally conservative guidance. Re-test the amount for inflation, retirement length, taxes, asset allocation and your willingness to reduce discretionary spending after poor returns. The PFRDA-hosted Indian study supports the lower range as a planning reference, but no source establishes a fixed lifelong income that is safe for every retiree.
