At a constant 4.00% APY, $10,000 would earn about $400 over one year before fees, provided the balance and APY do not change and you meet the account’s terms. That is an illustration, not a guaranteed quote.
Your actual credit can differ because high-yield savings rates are usually variable, balances change, institutions may use daily-balance or average-daily-balance calculations, and fees or account conditions can reduce what you receive.

The quick way to estimate a year of interest
Use this calculation for a rough full-year estimate when the deposited balance and APY stay constant:
Estimated interest = balance × (APY ÷ 100)
For example, $10,000 at 4.00% APY is:
$10,000 × 0.04 = $400
The result is approximately $400 for the year, before fees. APY already incorporates the effect of compounding under the account’s stated terms, so you normally do not multiply the balance by a separate monthly-compounding assumption when making this basic estimate.

This multiplication is useful for planning, but it is not a promise of earnings. It assumes the account keeps the same APY, your money remains in the account at the same balance for the entire year, and you satisfy requirements such as minimums or eligibility rules.
What APY means on a savings account
Annual percentage yield (APY) expresses the relationship between the principal and the interest earned over a stated term, including the effect of compounding. Regulation DD Appendix A sets the calculation for accounts without a stated maturity using a 365-day term. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) explains that APY reflects interest and compounding over 365 days, or 366 days in a leap year.
Because APY is an annualized figure, it lets you compare accounts using the same balance and one-year horizon. It does not mean the bank will necessarily leave the posted rate unchanged for the next 12 months. A variable-rate account can change after you open it, and a new APY can alter future interest.

The periodic interest rate is the rate applied during an accrual period. APY translates the rate and compounding into an annual figure. When an account advertises an APY, use that APY for a simple annual estimate. If a disclosure gives only a periodic rate, the account’s terms explain how it compounds and how the institution converts it to an APY.
Why a leap year can produce a small difference
The standard estimate uses 365 days. FDIC guidance notes that APY calculations use 366 days during a leap year. A statement period that includes a leap day can therefore produce a slightly different result than a simple 365-day projection, depending on the account’s calculation method and terms.

The following are hypothetical, full-year illustrations. Each assumes the balance and 4.00% APY remain constant and no fees are charged.

| Balance | APY | Approximate interest in one year |
|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | 4.00% | $40 |
| $5,000 | 4.00% | $200 |
| $10,000 | 4.00% | $400 |
| $25,000 | 4.00% | $1,000 |
These figures scale directly with the balance: doubling the balance doubles the estimated interest when the APY and time period are unchanged. They do not establish that a particular institution currently offers 4.00% or that it will maintain that rate.
Estimating interest for part of a year
For a rough estimate when money stays deposited for only part of a year, use:
Estimated interest ≈ balance × APY decimal × (days deposited ÷ 365)
Suppose $10,000 remains in an account at a constant 4.00% APY for 90 days. The approximation is:
$10,000 × 0.04 × (90 ÷ 365) ≈ $98.63
This is only a planning estimate. The actual amount can differ because the account may use a daily periodic rate, an average daily balance, a 366-day leap-year basis, different posting dates, or a rate that changes during the 90 days. Depositing or withdrawing money also changes the balance used in the calculation.

Daily-balance method
Under a daily-balance method, the institution applies a daily periodic rate to the principal held for each day. A deposit that arrives during the period may begin earning according to the account’s posting and availability rules, while a withdrawal reduces the balance used for subsequent days. The exact treatment of transaction timing is set out in the account agreement.
Average-daily-balance method
Under an average-daily-balance method, the institution calculates an average balance for the period and applies the applicable periodic rate to that average. A balance that rises and falls during the month therefore does not earn exactly what a constant beginning balance would earn.
Why the statement can differ from your multiplication
- The APY changed during the period.
- Your average or daily balance was different from the balance used in the estimate.
- The period included a leap day or did not contain a full year.
- The account posted interest on a schedule that differs from your assumption.
- A fee reduced the amount credited.
When the difference matters, read the account’s rate and fee disclosures rather than treating the simple estimate as an error.

What can reduce or increase the amount you earn
Variable APYs
High-yield savings accounts commonly publish a rate that can change after opening. Camden National Bank’s rate disclosure, for example, states that its listed high-yield APY is subject to change after an account is opened. That is one institution’s disclosure, not a universal rule, so check the current terms for the account you are considering.
Balance tiers and minimums
Some schedules pay different APYs at different balances or apply a lower rate below a stated threshold. Camden National Bank’s disclosure describes balance-based APYs, a minimum opening deposit, and a separate lower rate for balances below a threshold. A headline APY may therefore apply only to a qualifying balance range. Use the rate tier that actually matches your expected balance.
Eligibility and new-money conditions
An advertised account may require a related checking account, a new deposit, or another eligibility condition. The Camden National example requires an existing or newly opened Camden National checking account and includes a new-money condition. Other institutions can set different rules. If you do not meet a condition, the account may pay a different rate or be unavailable to you.

Fees
Fees can reduce the net amount you keep. Camden National Bank states that fees could reduce earnings. Review the complete fee schedule for maintenance charges, excess-transaction fees, or other costs before comparing APYs. A slightly higher APY is not necessarily better if a fee applies to your situation.
Deposits and withdrawals
The full-year examples assume the money remains deposited at the same balance. Adding money can increase later interest; withdrawing money reduces it. If your balance changes frequently, estimate each period separately using the balance and APY that applied during that period, then recognize that the institution’s daily or average-balance method determines the final credit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical comparison method
To compare two or more high-yield savings accounts fairly, hold the balance and time horizon constant, then examine the terms that determine whether the advertised APY is attainable.
- Record the current APY. Write down the date you checked it because a variable rate can change.
- Match the balance tier. Confirm whether the APY applies to your entire balance, only a band of balances, or a minimum qualifying amount.
- Check the opening and ongoing minimums. Determine whether a minimum deposit is required and whether falling below a threshold changes the rate.
- Verify eligibility. Look for requirements involving another account, residency, new money, or a particular customer type.
- Read the fee schedule. Subtract any unavoidable fee from your projected interest when comparing net outcomes.
- Confirm access terms. Review how deposits, withdrawals, transfers, and account closures are handled because transaction timing affects the balance used for interest.
- Run the same calculation. Apply
balance × APY decimalto each account for a one-year illustration, then adjust your expectations for rate changes and balance movement.
The sources available for this explanation establish how APY and account-specific terms affect earnings, but they do not establish a current market-wide ranking of high-yield offers. Compare the actual disclosures for the accounts available to you rather than relying on a headline rate.
How the 2026 national savings-rate figure fits in
The FDIC’s national-rate table dated March 16, 2026, reported a 0.39% national savings rate. The FDIC says this benchmark is based on a $2,500 product tier and uses a methodology that weights institutions by domestic deposits.
That 0.39% figure is a dated national benchmark, not a quote for a particular high-yield savings account and not a current offer. It can provide context for the difference between a broad national average and a higher advertised account rate, but it should not be substituted for the APY and terms of the account you are evaluating.

Worked scenarios when your balance changes
Adding money halfway through the year
Suppose you start with $5,000 at a constant 4.00% APY and add $5,000 after six months. A quick estimate would treat the first $5,000 as earning for roughly a year and the added $5,000 as earning for roughly half a year:
($5,000 × 0.04) + ($5,000 × 0.04 × 0.5) = about $300
The account’s actual daily or average-balance method, deposit availability date, and any rate change determine the precise credit.

Withdrawing part of the balance
If $10,000 earns 4.00% APY for six months and you withdraw $4,000, a rough estimate is $200 for the first half-year plus approximately $120 for the remaining $6,000 over the next half-year, or about $320 total. This assumes the withdrawal occurs exactly halfway through the year and the APY remains constant; real transaction dates and account rules can change the result.
Changing APY during the year
If the APY changes, split the estimate into separate periods. For example, calculate interest on the balance at the first APY for the days it applied, then calculate the remaining days at the new APY. This approach is still approximate unless it mirrors the institution’s exact daily calculation, but it is more realistic than applying one rate to the entire year.
Questions to ask before opening an account
- Is the published APY variable, and where will rate changes be disclosed?
- What balance earns the advertised APY, and what rate applies below or above that tier?
- Is there a minimum opening deposit or minimum ongoing balance?
- Does eligibility require another account or a new-money deposit?
- Which balance method is used: daily balance or average daily balance?
- When do deposits begin earning and when is interest posted?
- Which fees could reduce earnings?
Answers to these questions let you replace a headline estimate with a projection based on the terms you can actually meet.
Bottom line for your own estimate
Start with balance × (APY ÷ 100) for a one-year illustration. At 4.00% APY, every $1,000 held for a full year would represent about $40 before fees if the rate and balance stayed constant. For shorter periods or changing balances, use the days-deposited approximation and divide the year into separate balance and rate periods. Then verify the account’s current APY, tiers, minimums, eligibility, calculation method, and fees in the institution’s disclosures before relying on the number.
