There is no single dollar fee for buying coffee with Bitcoin. The amount you pay depends on whether the payment uses Bitcoin’s base layer or Lightning, the transaction’s data size or routing path, and any exchange spread, trading, processing, or withdrawal charge. An on-chain transaction can cost more than the coffee because block-space fees are unrelated to the BTC amount. Lightning is generally designed for small, frequent payments and usually costs far less at the moment of purchase, but opening channels, swapping funds, or buying BTC can add separate costs.
What you are actually paying for
A Bitcoin coffee purchase can contain several separate charges. Keeping them separate prevents the common mistake of treating a wallet’s network fee, an exchange’s spread, and a Lightning service charge as one universal “Bitcoin fee.”

- Payment-network fee: A Bitcoin on-chain transaction pays miners for block space. A Lightning payment pays the intermediary nodes that route it, according to their fee policies.
- Exchange cost: Buying BTC can include a spread between the market price and your quoted buy price, plus a trading or processing fee depending on the order type.
- Transfer or withdrawal cost: Moving BTC from an exchange to a wallet, or using an exchange’s Lightning send service, can add a stated charge.
- Lifecycle cost: Opening or closing a Lightning channel, or swapping between Lightning and on-chain funds, may create base-layer and service fees even when the coffee payment itself is inexpensive.
Your total effective cost is therefore:
purchase cost + network or routing fee + exchange spread/fee + transfer or lifecycle charges

On-chain Bitcoin: why a tiny coffee can have a large fee
Fees are based on transaction data, not coffee value
Bitcoin.org states that “the fee depends on the size of the transaction in data, not on the amount of value being sent.” A transaction spending one input and creating two outputs is described there as approximately 140 virtual bytes (vB). Miners prioritize transactions by the fee rate attached to their data, commonly expressed in satoshis per vbyte.
That means a 5,000-satoshi coffee payment and a 0.5-BTC payment can require a similar fee if their transactions use comparable inputs and outputs. Conversely, a small payment can be expensive when it spends many fragmented inputs, because each input adds data. Your wallet’s coin-selection algorithm, the number of outputs, and the current demand for block space all matter.
One hundred million satoshis equal 1 BTC. If your wallet estimates a fee rate of r satoshis per vbyte and the transaction is 140 vB, the network fee is approximately 140 × r satoshis before any wallet-specific adjustments. The multiplication is illustrative; the live fee rate must come from the wallet at the time you send.
Confirmation time is part of the cost
An on-chain coffee payment normally waits for inclusion in a Bitcoin block. Paying a higher fee rate can improve the transaction’s priority when the mempool is busy, while a lower rate can leave it pending for longer. A café may require a confirmation, accept an unconfirmed transaction, or use a payment processor that manages this risk. Those policies change the practical experience even when the nominal fee is identical.
When on-chain payment can make sense
- You already hold BTC in a self-custody wallet and the transaction is being sent during a period of low block-space demand.
- The merchant accepts an on-chain address and is willing to wait for confirmation.
- You are consolidating or moving funds for another reason and the coffee payment is incidental to a larger transaction.
For a one-off, low-value purchase, however, the fixed data footprint can dominate the economics. Check the wallet’s fee in satoshis and its fiat conversion immediately before approving the payment rather than assuming the fee will be a percentage of the coffee price.

Lightning: usually better suited to coffee
Off-chain settlement changes the fee model
Lightning settles payments off-chain instead of recording each coffee purchase in a Bitcoin block. Bitcoin.org describes Lightning as allowing near-instant payments, including very small amounts, with minimal fees and says fees for small or frequent payments are typically a tiny fraction of a cent. The payment is authorized through a Lightning invoice or address, and the receiving merchant gets a settlement result in seconds or less when the route succeeds.
Because the individual payment is not a new base-layer transaction, it does not carry the same 140-vB-style block-space cost. That is why Lightning can be economical for repeated small purchases.
Routing nodes can still charge
A Lightning payment may travel through intermediary nodes. Lightning Labs explains: “Nodes in the Lightning Network that route payments on behalf of other nodes charge fees in exchange for the use of their capital.” A route can include a base fee, a proportional fee, or both, according to each node’s policy. The amount is usually small, but it is not guaranteed to be zero.
Routing also depends on available liquidity. A payment can fail when no route has enough capacity, when an invoice expires, or when a wallet cannot find a suitable path. A failed attempt may not cost a routing fee, but repeated retries, swaps, or channel management can introduce other charges.
Channel and swap costs are separate from the coffee
Opening a channel publishes an on-chain transaction; closing one can do the same. Moving funds between a Lightning balance and an on-chain address through a swap service can therefore incur both Bitcoin network fees and the provider’s fee. These costs should be allocated across the payments you expect to make. A channel opened solely for one inexpensive coffee can make the overall episode uneconomic even though the Lightning payment itself is cheap.

Exchange fees before and during the payment
Buying BTC: spread versus explicit fee
Coinbase says simple buy and sell orders include a spread in the quoted price. A spread is a difference between the market price and the price shown to you; it may not appear as a separate line item. The coffee can therefore cost more than the apparent BTC amount even before you send it. Review the quote, the BTC amount received, and the fee disclosure together.
Sending over Lightning from an exchange
Coinbase documents a processing fee of 0.2% of the amount of bitcoin transferred when you send bitcoin through its Lightning service. This is an exchange-service charge, not a Bitcoin miner fee and not the merchant’s Lightning routing fee. For example, a 10,000-satoshi Lightning withdrawal would incur a stated 20-satoshi processing charge under that percentage, before considering any spread paid when you acquired the BTC. The applicable terms and availability can vary by account and jurisdiction, so confirm the preview for your transaction.
Trading fees depend on venue and order type
Kraken’s published schedules illustrate why “the exchange fee” is not one number. Its Pro executed-order range runs from a -0.02% maker rebate to a 0.80% taker fee, depending on volume, pair, and order type. Its published Instant Buy/Sell schedule lists a 1% fee for instant and recurring trades and 1.5% for custom orders, with spreads included in the quoted prices.
| Exchange service or order type | Published charge | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Coinbase simple buy or sell | Spread included in quoted price | Price difference embedded in the quote; the exact spread depends on the live market and quote |
| Coinbase Lightning send | 0.2% | Processing fee on the amount of bitcoin transferred |
| Kraken Pro executed orders | -0.02% maker to 0.80% taker | Range that varies with volume, pair, and order type |
| Kraken Instant Buy/Sell | 1% | Instant or recurring trade fee; quoted prices include spreads |
| Kraken custom order | 1.5% | Published custom-order fee; quoted prices include spreads |
These are published schedules, not a promise of the amount you will pay on every account. Always use the final order and withdrawal preview for your region and account.
On-chain versus Lightning at a glance
| Factor | Bitcoin on-chain | Lightning |
|---|---|---|
| Primary fee basis | Transaction data size and current demand for block space | Route and intermediary-node fee policies |
| Typical confirmation experience | Waits for block inclusion and, when required, confirmations | Near-instant off-chain settlement when a route succeeds |
| Exchange layer | Spread, trading fee, and any withdrawal charge may apply | Spread, trading fee, and any Lightning processing or withdrawal charge may apply |
| Lifecycle costs | Each payment is a base-layer transaction | Channel opening/closing or swaps can create on-chain and service fees |
How to calculate your own coffee payment cost
- Identify the rail. In the payment request or wallet, confirm whether the merchant is asking for an on-chain address, a Lightning invoice, or another Lightning format. Do not send an on-chain transaction to a Lightning invoice.
- Record the merchant amount. Write down the BTC amount and the fiat price shown by the merchant. Keep the satoshi amount separate from the fee.
- Read the wallet preview. For on-chain payments, note the transaction size, fee rate, total fee in satoshis, and estimated confirmation. For Lightning, note any displayed routing or wallet fee and the final amount debited.
- Add exchange acquisition costs. If you bought the BTC immediately before paying, compare the quote with the reference market price to identify the spread and add any explicit trading or processing fee.
- Add transfer charges. Include an exchange withdrawal or Lightning-send fee. Coinbase’s documented Lightning processing rate, for example, is 0.2% of the transferred BTC.
- Allocate setup costs honestly. If you opened a channel or used a swap, decide how many payments will use it. Divide the one-time cost across that expected number rather than pretending the first coffee had no setup cost.
- Convert only at the end. Multiply the total satoshis by the BTC price you actually paid or the live price you are using for comparison. A dollar total without a stated BTC price and timestamp is not reproducible.
A compact formula is:
effective coffee cost = merchant BTC amount + payment fee + acquisition spread/fee + transfer fee + allocated setup cost

For a Lightning withdrawal charged at 0.2%, a 10,000-satoshi transfer has a 20-satoshi processing charge. That arithmetic does not include a possible spread, route fee, or channel cost; those must come from the specific previews.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. An illustrative Lightning swap example
Lightning Labs publishes an example for a 300,000-satoshi Loop swap. The example reports 1,153 satoshis in off-chain fees, 416 satoshis in on-chain fees, and a 500-satoshi Loop service fee. Those figures describe that provider’s example transaction, not a standard fee for buying coffee.
| Component in the published example | Amount |
|---|---|
| Swap amount | 300,000 satoshis |
| Off-chain fees | 1,153 satoshis |
| On-chain fees | 416 satoshis |
| Loop service fee | 500 satoshis |
The example demonstrates the main budgeting lesson: a conversion between Lightning and the base layer can cost substantially more than a single routed payment. If you are evaluating coffee economics, separate the swap’s cost from the merchant payment and spread it over the payments that actually benefit from the swap.
When fees can exceed the coffee price
On-chain congestion
During periods of high demand, the fee rate needed for timely confirmation can rise. Since the fee is tied to transaction bytes, not the coffee’s value, a low-priced purchase is particularly exposed.

Exchange spread and minimum charges
A small purchase magnifies percentage-based costs. A spread embedded in a quote or a processing fee can represent more than the coffee’s own network cost, especially if you buy BTC solely for that transaction.
Channel and swap setup
Opening a channel or moving liquidity through a swap adds costs that do not disappear just because the final invoice is small. Use an existing, funded Lightning wallet when appropriate, and treat new channel funding as a separate decision.
A practical decision rule
- Use Lightning when the merchant supports it, you already have usable Lightning liquidity, and the wallet preview shows a small route or service fee.
- Use on-chain Bitcoin when the payment is part of a larger planned transaction, confirmation timing is acceptable, and the quoted network fee is reasonable relative to the purchase.
- Delay or choose another payment method when the wallet warns of a high on-chain fee, the exchange spread dominates the purchase, or a new channel or swap would be needed for one inexpensive coffee.
Before approving, verify the invoice amount, network, recipient, expiry, and total debit. A current quote from your wallet or exchange is the only reliable way to turn the general fee mechanics into a dollar figure for this particular coffee.

Are Bitcoin transaction fees a percentage of the coffee price?
No. Base-layer fees depend primarily on transaction data size and block-space demand. Lightning routing fees follow the policies of the nodes on the selected path.
Is Lightning always free?
No. A route can include intermediary fees, and exchange sends, channel operations, and swaps can add separate charges. It is usually more appropriate for small payments, not automatically free.
Why did my exchange quote cost more than the market price?
A simple buy quote can include a spread. Depending on the service, an explicit trading or processing fee may also apply. Compare the quoted price, BTC received, and fee disclosure before confirming.
Can I know the dollar fee in advance?
Only approximately until you check the live preview. The BTC price, wallet fee estimate, route, exchange terms, account, jurisdiction, and network conditions all affect the final total.
