Short answer: It can grow substantially over long periods, but no fixed outcome is guaranteed. In one hypothetical example, depositing $100 at the end of every month and earning a constant 7% nominal annual rate (compounded monthly) produces about $52,093 after 20 years and $121,997 after 30 years. Those figures exclude fund expenses, taxes and inflation, and they are formula illustrations—not forecasts of what any particular index fund will earn.
Your result depends mainly on how much you contribute, how long you stay invested, the returns that actually occur, fees, taxes, inflation and whether you keep making deposits during market declines. Investor.gov emphasizes that investing has no set rate of return and that market values fluctuate.

What the projection actually measures
“Monthly index fund investing” describes a contribution schedule, not a single investment. An index fund is a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) that seeks to track a market index. The index itself is only a measurement; you invest through a fund that owns securities intended to represent it. A fund may hold every constituent (full replication) or a representative sample.
The examples below use an ordinary-annuity convention: one identical deposit at the end of each month, no starting balance, and no skipped payments. A stated annual rate is divided by 12 to create a monthly rate, and interest is compounded monthly. The calculations assume the same return every month, which real markets do not deliver. They also omit fund expenses, trading costs, taxes and inflation.

The 7% input appears in illustrative Investor.gov material. It is an assumption for a calculator example, not a promise, historical average for every index or estimate of your personal future return.
Illustrative growth from $100 per month
The table shows the future value of $100 deposited at each month-end. Amounts are rounded to the nearest dollar. “Contributions paid in” is the cash you deposited; the difference between that column and an ending value is hypothetical investment growth under the selected assumption.
| Years contributing | Contributions paid in | 5% assumed annual rate | 7% assumed annual rate | 9% assumed annual rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | $12,000 | $15,528 | $17,308 | $19,351 |
| 20 | $24,000 | $41,103 | $52,093 | $66,789 |
| 30 | $36,000 | $83,226 | $121,997 | $183,074 |
| 40 | $48,000 | $152,602 | $262,481 | $468,132 |
For example, at the 7% assumption, 20 years of deposits total $24,000 and the formula produces $52,093. Extending the same $100 schedule to 30 years adds only $12,000 of new deposits but raises the calculated balance to $121,997 because earlier deposits receive more months of compounding. At 40 years, the same assumption produces $262,481 on $48,000 of contributions.

ris the monthly rate, calculated here as the nominal annual assumption divided by 12.nis the number of deposits: years multiplied by 12.- The formula assumes every monthly return is identical and contributions never change.
If the annual assumption is 7%, r = 0.07 ÷ 12. For 30 years, n = 30 × 12 = 360. A beginning-of-month deposit convention produces a slightly higher result because each payment is invested for one additional month.
Using the Investor.gov calculator
Investor.gov’s Compound Interest Calculator is designed around the same inputs. Enter:
- Monthly contribution: the amount you plan to invest each month.
- Duration: the number of years you expect to contribute.
- Estimated annual rate: a scenario assumption, not a guaranteed return.
- Compounding frequency: monthly if you want to reproduce the table’s convention.
Run several rates and time periods rather than relying on one apparently precise number. Save the assumptions with each result so you can tell a conservative scenario from an optimistic one.
Scaling the example to a different monthly amount
With every other assumption unchanged, the result scales directly with the contribution. A $500 monthly deposit is five times the $100 example: at the 7% assumption it would be approximately $86,540 after 10 years, $260,465 after 20 years, $609,985 after 30 years and $1,312,405 after 40 years. These are mathematical multiples of the table, not additional performance evidence. Changing the contribution over time, adding an initial lump sum or missing payments requires a new calculation.
Why the ending value is uncertain
Returns arrive unevenly
The table applies one constant monthly rate for clarity. An actual index fund can rise sharply, fall sharply or move sideways, and the order of those returns affects the path of your account. Two investments with the same long-run average can have different balances at a particular date because of different sequences of gains and losses. A market decline does not cancel the plan’s mathematics, but it can reduce the account value when you need to withdraw.

There is no set rate of return
Investor.gov states that investing has no set rate of return. A 5%, 7% or 9% column should therefore be read as a sensitivity test: “What would the balance be if this constant assumption happened?” It should not be described as the expected return of all index funds or as a likely annual result.
Inflation changes purchasing power
The projections are nominal dollars. Inflation can make a future $121,997 buy less than the same number buys today. To estimate today’s purchasing power, apply an inflation assumption separately and label it clearly. The table does not include that adjustment, so it should not be used as a retirement-spending target without further analysis.
How fund costs reduce compounding
Operating expenses are deducted from a fund’s assets and reduce the return that remains invested. Other costs can include brokerage commissions or transaction charges, account fees and plan-level expenses, depending on how you buy and hold the fund. The SEC explains that even small recurring costs can materially reduce a portfolio over long periods because the money spent on fees is no longer compounding.
An index fund can also trail its benchmark because of expenses, portfolio trading, taxes inside the fund, sampling and other tracking differences. The index’s published return is therefore not the same as your personal net return. When comparing funds, find the expense ratio and review the account or plan’s additional charges rather than comparing index names alone.
What to compare before choosing an index fund
Underlying index and holdings
Identify what the index represents: broad domestic stocks, international stocks, bonds, a sector or another segment. Check how the index is constructed, how many securities it contains and whether the fund owns all of them or samples them. Two funds described as “index” products can have very different concentrations and risks.

Total cost
- Expense ratio charged by the fund.
- Purchase, sale, account or plan fees that apply to your account.
- Trading-related costs and the effect of bid-ask spreads where relevant.
Use the cost information available in the fund’s prospectus and your account’s fee schedule. A lower expense ratio is useful, but it is not the only comparison; implementation and tracking matter too.
Tracking and implementation
Look at how closely the fund has followed its benchmark after costs. Sampling, cash management, rebalancing and trading can create a tracking difference. A fund can underperform its index even when the index itself rises.
Risk, diversification and time horizon
Index funds carry the risks of the securities they own. A broad fund may spread exposure across many companies, while a narrow sector fund can be highly concentrated. The SEC’s investor guidance says asset allocation should reflect your time frame and risk tolerance. Money needed soon generally cannot tolerate the same volatility as money intended for a goal decades away.
Indexing does not remove market risk. An index fund may also be less flexible than an actively managed fund in responding to a company or sector that is falling, because its mandate is to follow the index.

1. Define the goal and deadline
Write down what the money is for and when you expect to use it. A retirement account with a 30-year horizon calls for a different risk discussion than a home purchase planned in three years.

2. Set a sustainable contribution
Choose an amount you can maintain after essential bills, emergency savings and high-interest debt obligations. A smaller contribution that continues through difficult markets can be more useful than an ambitious amount that you repeatedly stop.
3. Select an appropriate index exposure
Read the fund’s objective, holdings, fees and risks. Confirm that the underlying market matches your intended asset allocation rather than selecting solely by a high recent return.
4. Automate and verify
Schedule the transfer and investment for a date after your income arrives. Check that the correct fund and dollar amount were purchased, especially after changing jobs or account providers.

Common projection mistakes
- Calling the 7% column a forecast: it is a fixed-rate illustration.
- Ignoring fees: a benchmark return is not the investor’s net return.
- Using nominal dollars as a spending plan: inflation reduces future purchasing power.
- Assuming contributions eliminate risk: regular buying does not prevent losses or guarantee a profit.
- Comparing unlike funds: a broad-market fund and a concentrated sector fund have different exposures even if both track indexes.
- Stopping after a decline without a plan: missed deposits change the calculation and can leave the account out of line with the chosen allocation.
- Using a short horizon for volatile assets: the account may be down when the money is needed.
How to read a projection responsibly
Use at least three scenarios, record whether the rate is nominal or inflation-adjusted, and include an estimate of fees when making a personal plan. Treat the output as a range for planning conversations, not a balance you are entitled to receive. Recalculate when your monthly amount, time horizon, account type or fund choice changes.
The central trade-off is straightforward: higher contributions and more time give compounding more opportunity to work, while uncertain returns, costs, taxes, inflation and market risk determine what actually arrives in your account. A disciplined schedule can improve your process, but it cannot turn an assumed rate into a guarantee.
