How Much Can Retirees Withdraw From Mutual Funds Without Depleting Their Corpus?

There is no withdrawal rate that guarantees a mutual-fund corpus will never run out. For a U.S.-style 30-year retirement, Morningstar’s 2025 model estimated a 3.9% first-year withdrawal rate for portfolios with 30% to 50% in equities, with a 90% modeled probability of having money left after 30 years. For India, the PFRDA-published study Balancing Acts: Safe Withdrawal Rates in the Indian Context concludes that 3.0% to 3.5% is more appropriate than importing the often-quoted U.S. 4% rule.

Those percentages are starting points under specific assumptions, not guaranteed returns, interest rates or personalized advice. Your country, retirement horizon, asset allocation, inflation, taxes, fees, other income and willingness to reduce spending after poor markets determine how much your own corpus can support.

What “without depleting” really means

Retirees use “without depleting” to mean different things. Some want a high probability of retaining at least a small balance at the end of life. Others want a stable, inflation-adjusted paycheck, the highest sustainable lifetime spending, or a bequest for heirs. These goals produce different withdrawal amounts.

A safe withdrawal rate normally means the first year’s withdrawal divided by the starting portfolio. Under a fixed-real method, the rupee or dollar amount is then increased with inflation each year, regardless of the portfolio’s current value. A 3.9% rate therefore does not mean withdrawing 3.9% of the balance every year.

Even a model with a 90% success criterion allows failures. “Success” generally means the modeled portfolio still has money at the end of the selected horizon; it does not promise a particular final balance, purchasing power or monthly income. A rate that works for a 30-year horizon may be too aggressive for someone retiring at 55 and planning for 40 years.

Current benchmarks, separated by country and model

Source and date Starting withdrawal figure What it assumes How to interpret it
Morningstar, The State of Retirement Income: 2025 3.9% for the 30-year base case Balanced portfolios with 30%–50% equities; fixed real withdrawals; 90% modeled success; market data through September 30, 2025 U.S.-oriented model estimate, not a guarantee for any fund or investor
Morningstar, 2024 report 3.7% for a 30-year base case Earlier assumptions and capital-market outlook Useful historical comparison, not a current universal rule
Rajan Raju and Ravi Saraogi, PFRDA chapter “Balancing Acts: Safe Withdrawal Rates in the Indian Context” 3.0%–3.5% Indian market context and data described through 2023; considers inflation, taxes, asset allocation and sequence risk India-specific study finding; it cautions against directly applying the U.S. 4% rule
Vanguard, 2026 guidance About 3.5%–4% for many households seeking 30 years or more Hypothetical VCMM projections as of February 28, 2026 General estimate; Vanguard states that simulations are not guarantees
Morningstar India illustration, November 2020 ₹33,500 per quarter, before tax ₹20 lakh corpus, 20-year span, assumed annual returns of 9.5% for equity and 5.5% for fixed income Dated illustration with stated assumptions, not a current forecast or standard SWP amount

The 3.9% figure is the highest modeled starting rate in Morningstar’s 2025 30-year base case for the stated equity range. It is not a promise that every portfolio will last 30 years. The study’s modeled failure allowance is 10%, which is material if your income is essential and cannot be reduced.

Convert a percentage into an actual withdrawal

Use this calculation for the first year:

first-year withdrawal = starting corpus × initial withdrawal rate

Starting corpus Illustrative rate First-year amount Monthly equivalent before tax and fees
$1,000,000 3.9% $39,000 $3,250
$500,000 3.0% $15,000 $1,250
₹20,00,000 3.0% ₹60,000 ₹5,000
₹20,00,000 3.5% ₹70,000 About ₹5,833

The examples are arithmetic illustrations, not forecasts. If you use a fixed-real approach, the next year’s dollar or rupee amount rises with measured inflation. If you use a constant-percentage approach, the payment changes with the portfolio and can fall after a market decline.

The 2020 Morningstar India example illustrates why a rupee amount cannot be generalized. It showed ₹33,500 each quarter before tax from a ₹20 lakh corpus over 20 years, assuming 9.5% annual equity returns and 5.5% annual fixed-income returns. Those assumptions, the date of publication and the 20-year horizon are integral to the illustration; it should not be treated as a current safe rate.

Why the first retirement years matter so much

Sequence-of-returns risk is the danger that poor returns occur while withdrawals are already reducing the portfolio. Two retirees can receive the same long-run average return and have different outcomes if one suffers losses at the beginning.

Morningstar describes this as the risk that early losses jeopardize a portfolio’s ability to sustain spending through the end of retirement. In its 2025 modeled failures, nearly 70% had investments below their starting value by the end of year five. A portfolio that falls early has fewer units or shares left to participate in a later recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Automatic inflation increases can intensify the problem. Morningstar found that a 5% fixed-real withdrawal failed in three historical 30-year periods that began during high inflation. This does not mean inflation-linked withdrawals are always wrong; it shows that a rigid increase after every year can be especially demanding when returns are poor and prices are rising.

Choose the withdrawal method before choosing the percentage

Fixed real withdrawals

You set the first-year amount and increase it with inflation. This method gives the clearest spending plan and protects purchasing power when the portfolio can support it. Its weakness is that the payment keeps rising after losses, so the portfolio bears the full sequence risk.

Constant-percentage withdrawals

You withdraw a set percentage of the current balance on each scheduled date. Payments automatically shrink after a decline and rise after gains, improving portfolio resilience. The trade-off is unpredictable income: a retiree cannot assume the same monthly amount every year.

Endowment-style or other flexible methods

These approaches link spending to the portfolio’s current value and a payout target. Morningstar’s study found that constant-percentage and endowment approaches could support higher initial rates than fixed-real withdrawals, but they produced greater year-to-year cash-flow variation. They suit retirees who can adjust discretionary spending; they are less suitable when rent, medical costs and essential bills require a fixed amount.

Before selecting a rate, state which objective matters most: predictable inflation-adjusted income, the highest initial income, a high probability of leaving a balance, or flexibility to spend less after weak markets. A single percentage cannot optimize all four.

How a mutual-fund systematic withdrawal plan works

An SWP is a redemption instruction. The fund sells enough units at the applicable net asset value to send you the requested amount. It is not interest, a coupon or a guaranteed yield.

  1. Establish the investable corpus. Exclude money reserved for near-term emergencies, known medical costs and one-time obligations if those amounts should not be exposed to market fluctuations.
  2. Set the amount and frequency. You can request monthly, quarterly or another schedule offered by the fund. Decide whether the amount is fixed in rupees or recalculated as a percentage of the balance.
  3. Understand the unit redemption. The number of units sold equals the withdrawal divided by the applicable NAV, subject to the fund’s processing rules. A falling NAV means more units are sold for the same rupee amount.
  4. Account for investment performance. The remaining units continue to gain or lose value. A distribution does not create a return separate from the fund’s underlying assets.
  5. Check taxes and charges. Redemptions can create capital gains, and fund expenses or exit charges can reduce the amount that remains invested. The net cash you keep may be lower than the gross SWP amount.

Debt funds are not risk-free substitutes for cash. Morningstar India’s discussion highlights interest-rate, credit and liquidity risks. A fund’s label does not eliminate the possibility that its NAV falls or that selling during stressed markets is costly.

What Indian retirees should change in the calculation

The PFRDA study by Rajan Raju and Ravi Saraogi concludes that 3.0% to 3.5% is more appropriate in India than simply importing the U.S. 4% rule. The study considers Indian market behavior, inflation, taxes, equity exposure and early return sequences. Higher equity exposure may increase the potential withdrawal rate, but it also increases volatility and failure risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Indian retirees should therefore test the withdrawal against the actual horizon and spending pattern rather than treating 3.5% as a promise. A retiree with a longer horizon, little other income and no ability to cut discretionary spending may need a lower starting amount. Someone with a pension covering essentials may tolerate a more variable withdrawal from the investment portfolio.

Tax treatment must be checked for the specific fund and transaction date. The Income Tax Department’s ITR-2 material supports the general point that gains on transfer of a capital asset fall under capital gains. The applicable category, holding-period treatment and rate can change, and the available material does not establish a current tax calculation for every Indian SWP. Use current official rules and fund statements, or obtain individualized tax advice, before setting a net-income target.

How U.S.-oriented figures should be used

Morningstar’s 3.9% estimate applies to a modeled 30-year horizon and portfolios holding 30% to 50% equities. It uses forward-looking capital-market and inflation assumptions and a 90% success criterion. The result is most useful as a reference point for someone whose taxes, costs, investment universe and inflation exposure resemble the model.

Vanguard’s 2026 guidance places a general estimate for many households seeking 30 years or more at 3.5% to 4%. Its VCMM projections are hypothetical and explicitly not guarantees. The agreement between these broad ranges does not remove the need to test your own spending, because neither source models your exact mutual funds, fees, tax position or other income.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical way to set your own starting amount

  1. Define the horizon. Use the number of years you need the portfolio to support you, not an assumed average lifespan. A 40-year plan requires more caution than a 20-year plan.
  2. Separate essential and discretionary spending. Identify housing, food, insurance and healthcare separately from travel, gifts and upgrades. Flexible categories are the first candidates for reductions after a poor market sequence.
  3. Subtract dependable income. Include pensions, annuities and other reliable cash flow. The SWP only needs to fund the gap, not the entire household budget.
  4. Choose the relevant geographic benchmark. Use the U.S.-oriented figures only as a U.S.-style reference. For an India-based plan, begin by examining the 3.0%–3.5% study range rather than assuming 4%.
  5. Match the method to your temperament. Select fixed-real withdrawals when spending stability is paramount; select a percentage-based method when you can accept variable income in exchange for greater portfolio resilience.
  6. Stress-test early losses and inflation. Ask what happens if the portfolio falls in the first two or three years while withdrawals continue. If the answer is that essential bills cannot be paid, reduce the starting amount or build more dependable income first.
  7. Implement and review. Put the SWP instruction in writing, record the number of units sold and the tax basis, and review the plan when markets, inflation, taxes, health costs or household income materially change.

Worked gap example

Suppose an Indian household has ₹60 lakh invested, receives ₹20,000 a month from other income and wants ₹50,000 a month for spending. The portfolio must provide ₹30,000 a month, or ₹3.6 lakh a year. That is 6% of ₹60 lakh, above the 3.0%–3.5% range identified by the India-focused study. The gap could be addressed by reducing discretionary spending, increasing the corpus, adding dependable income or accepting a withdrawal method with more payment variation; it should not be solved by calling 6% “safe.”

Common mistakes and their fixes

  • Treating 4% as a global law: use a country- and horizon-specific starting point.
  • Confusing an SWP with interest: every payment normally involves selling units; the remaining corpus can decline.
  • Using average returns as a promise: model poor early returns, not just a long-run average.
  • Ignoring inflation: decide explicitly whether payments rise with inflation or vary with the balance.
  • Forgetting taxes and fund costs: set the target using net cash, not the gross redemption instruction.
  • Putting all assets in one risk bucket: equity may improve growth and inflation protection but increases volatility; debt funds carry interest-rate, credit and liquidity risks.
  • Setting a payment without considering other income: calculate the portfolio-funded spending gap.
  • Failing to adjust after a bad sequence: reduce discretionary withdrawals or revisit the schedule rather than automatically increasing every payment.

Questions to settle before starting an SWP

  • What is the planned horizon, and how would the plan change if retirement lasts longer?
  • Which expenses are essential, and which can be paused after a market decline?
  • Is the target a stable inflation-adjusted paycheck or a high probability of preserving a bequest?
  • What percentage of the portfolio is in equity, fixed income and cash-like reserves?
  • What are the fund’s expense ratio, exit charges and redemption processing rules?
  • How will capital gains and other taxes be calculated under the rules applicable to the fund and transaction date?
  • What specific event will trigger a spending review: a major loss, unusually high inflation, a health expense or a change in other income?

The U.S. figures come from Morningstar’s The State of Retirement Income: 2025, dated December 3, 2025, using market data through September 30, 2025. The India range comes from Rajan Raju and Ravi Saraogi’s chapter, “Balancing Acts: Safe Withdrawal Rates in the Indian Context,” in the PFRDA volume Pension Security in India: Progress and Prospects; the study describes Indian data through 2023.

The dated Indian illustration is from Morningstar India’s “Portfolio withdrawals during retirement,” published November 22, 2020. Practical SWP and allocation considerations also appear in Mohasin Athanikar’s Morningstar India article “Ask Morningstar: Where to invest for a regular income,” published September 1, 2022. Vanguard’s 2026 estimate is based on VCMM simulations as of February 28, 2026. The Income Tax Department’s ITR-2 capital-gains overview supports the general capital-gains treatment described above.
