When an index raises a company’s weight, funds that track it must buy more shares; deletions and weight cuts create mechanical selling. The resulting order imbalance is usually most visible between the review announcement and the effective-date close, when many passive funds trade together. Prices can overshoot and later reverse, while execution costs and timing create temporary tracking error.
The effect is not a guaranteed profit opportunity. It depends on the size of the index change, security liquidity, how much investors anticipated the decision, foreign-market closing times, taxes, fund cash and the ETF’s replication and execution methods. To evaluate an event, compare the ETF with the total-return version of its benchmark—not simply with its quoted share price on one volatile day.

What an MSCI rebalance changes
MSCI index reviews update constituents, size classifications and index weights so a benchmark continues to represent an investable market. The Global Investable Market Index (GIMI) framework uses market-cap coverage targets of about 70% for large-cap indexes, 85% for standard large- and mid-cap indexes and 99% for investable-market indexes that include large-, mid- and small-cap stocks. These are methodology targets, not predictions of what any individual review will do.

A review can add or delete companies, move a security between size segments, change its free-float-adjusted weight or alter the number of shares represented. An ETF that promises to track that index must adjust its portfolio. Full replication buys or sells the affected securities directly; a sampled portfolio changes the positions MSCI’s new weights make necessary while managing trading costs and liquidity.

Why the mechanical trades move prices
Index-tracking assets place similar orders at similar times. If a stock is added or receives a higher target weight, passive demand arrives regardless of the company’s next earnings report. A deletion or lower weight produces the opposite supply. In a liquid large-cap stock, other investors may absorb the orders with limited price impact. In a smaller or less-traded security, the same notional order can move the price substantially.
Active traders often estimate likely changes before MSCI announces them. Their anticipatory buying or selling can move prices before passive funds trade. Once the announcement is public, arbitrageurs may position against the expected index demand, which can reduce or redistribute the eventual price pressure rather than eliminate it.
ETF price, NAV and the index: three different numbers
An ETF has a market price that changes continuously on an exchange and a NAV calculated from the value of its portfolio, usually at a specified time. During a rebalance, those values can diverge. A market maker or authorized participant (AP) can create or redeem ETF shares and trade the underlying stocks, while arbitrageurs attempt to capture a premium or discount. Their activity normally keeps the price close to NAV, but it cannot remove every gap when markets are stressed, underlying securities are hard to trade or their local exchanges are closed.

What happens to an ETF holding an added stock
- MSCI announces that the stock will enter the index or receive a larger weight.
- Index funds calculate the number of shares required at the effective date and may stage purchases beforehand.
- Other traders buy in anticipation, increasing demand before implementation.
- Near the implementation close, passive orders can concentrate in an auction or closing cross. The stock’s move changes the ETF’s NAV.
- The ETF’s exchange price may trade at a premium or discount while APs and market makers process the imbalance. That gap can narrow after implementation as temporary demand fades.
Why a deletion can fall more than expected
A deletion combines forced selling by trackers with speculative short selling and withdrawals by investors who no longer want benchmark exposure. The price response is larger when the stock has a small float, a wide bid-ask spread or limited foreign-market liquidity. A later rebound is possible if the initial pressure was mainly mechanical, but neither the decline nor a reversal is automatic.
The MSCI rebalance timeline
Exact dates differ by index and review. MSCI’s methodology index lists current and archived documents, including an August 2026 GIMI methodology and a May 2026 calculation methodology. Review calendars and implementation rules can change, so verify the notice for the specific benchmark before trading.
| Stage | What occurs | Likely market effect |
|---|---|---|
| Before announcement | Investors model possible additions, deletions and weight changes. | Anticipatory buying or selling can move candidates before any official decision. |
| Announcement date | MSCI publishes pro forma constituent and weight changes. | Abnormal returns and turnover can begin as funds and arbitrageurs update positions. |
| Announcement-to-effective window | Funds stage trades; other investors trade against predictable demand. | Price pressure and volume may build toward the implementation close. |
| Effective date | Most passive funds complete the rebalance, often using the review implementation close. | Orders can cluster in the closing auction, producing the largest volume spike and temporary ETF premium or discount. |
| After implementation | Portfolio weights align with the new index. | Some temporary price pressure can reverse; the speed depends on liquidity, anticipation and execution quality. |
A 2025 Pacific-Basin Finance Journal study found abnormal turnover increased after announcement, reached its largest spike immediately before the effective date and then showed a sharp reversal on the effective date. The precise pattern is an empirical result for that study’s sample, not a promise that every review will follow the same path.

Why tracking error can rise around a review
Tracking error is the volatility of the difference between an ETF’s return and its benchmark return. For a fair comparison, use the benchmark’s total-return index, which includes reinvested dividends, and account for the ETF’s fees, taxes and transaction costs. A one-day price-versus-price comparison can confuse an ETF premium or discount with genuine portfolio underperformance.

Main sources of temporary slippage
- Weight changes: Large additions, deletions or reallocations require more trading and create greater market impact.
- Bid-ask spreads: Buying at the offer and selling at the bid is an explicit cost, especially in less-liquid securities.
- Market impact: The fund’s own orders can move prices before all required shares are acquired or sold.
- Timing and time zones: A foreign exchange may close before the ETF’s home market, leaving the fund to trade using stale or rapidly changing prices.
- Taxes and settlement: Withholding taxes, stamp duties and settlement constraints vary by market.
- Cash drag: Cash held for creations, redemptions or staged execution earns less than a fully invested portfolio during a rising market.
- Replication method: Sampling can lower trading costs but may temporarily leave holdings different from the index.
- Corporate actions and share data: Changes in free float, shares outstanding or corporate actions can require adjustments independent of investor sentiment.
Buffers reduce turnover but cannot remove it
MSCI uses implementation rules and buffers to avoid repeatedly moving borderline securities between indexes. The goal is stability and trading-cost efficiency. MSCI describes the methodology as balancing a timely representation of the investment opportunity set with turnover, investability and replicability. Buffers reduce unnecessary trades; they do not prevent required changes when a company clearly crosses a size or investability threshold.
MSCI has also stated that rebalancing derived factor and ESG indexes helps prevent tracking error caused by benchmark misalignment. That is a design rationale, not an assurance that an ETF will have no tracking error on the review date. The fund still bears the execution costs of aligning with the new weights.

Capital flows around an MSCI review
Capital flows occur through several channels. Passive funds receive creations when investors add money and must buy the new portfolio. Existing shares can also be exchanged between APs and the ETF without fresh end-investor capital; those transactions still create underlying-stock orders. Active managers benchmarked to MSCI may adjust their portfolios, while hedge funds and proprietary traders take positions ahead of expected flows.
Announcement effects
Once pro forma changes are public, analysts can estimate the notional demand or supply implied by index-tracking assets. A stock expected to receive a large weight increase may attract buying before the effective date. A deletion can see selling and borrow demand rise. The 2025 study estimated an approximately 5.4% abnormal return for its specified long-added/short-deleted strategy over announcement/effective-date trading, after stock-lending fees. That figure is study-specific, depends on the sample and strategy construction, and is not a guaranteed return.

Funds that deferred trading must complete the rebalance by the implementation close. The closing auction can therefore show unusually high volume and a price that reflects a temporary concentration of orders. A sharp move at the close does not necessarily indicate new information about the company’s fundamentals. It may instead reflect the benchmark’s required ownership change.

Post-effective reversals
After the rebalance, index demand no longer has to be executed. Arbitrage positions can be unwound, and investors who bought ahead of passive funds may sell. Prices may partially reverse, but the degree varies with liquidity, how much of the move was anticipated and whether new fundamental information arrived during the window.
How MSCI implementation policy affects trading concentration
In a January 28, 2021 announcement, MSCI said it would not systematically stagger implementation for all semi-annual and quarterly reviews because the operational and trading costs would be substantial. It retained the possibility of selective staggering for custom indexes and discussed light-rebalancing options during periods of market stress. Consequently, many standard reviews can still concentrate orders near one effective date, although the treatment of a particular index may differ.
Comparing ETFs exposed to the same rebalance
Two ETFs tracking MSCI-branded benchmarks can experience different costs and price behavior. Evaluate the fund, not only the index label.
| Factor | Questions to ask | Why it matters during a rebalance |
|---|---|---|
| Replication | Does the fund fully replicate or sample, and how does it handle small or restricted markets? | Sampling can lower turnover but may widen short-term holdings differences. |
| Assets and liquidity | How large is the fund, and what are its normal and stress-period trading volumes? | Larger, actively traded funds often have more efficient creation and redemption, but liquidity is not guaranteed at the close. |
| Bid-ask spread | What spread is typical, and how does it behave on review dates? | A wide spread raises the cost of entering or exiting when orders are concentrated. |
| Tracking difference | How has total-return performance differed from the index after fees and taxes? | Persistent differences reveal implementation costs that a single-day chart can hide. |
| Domicile and time zone | Where is the ETF listed, and when do its underlying markets close? | Non-overlapping sessions can create NAV uncertainty and premiums or discounts. |
| Execution policy | Does the manager trade gradually, use closing auctions or hold cash? | Execution choices determine how much market impact and timing risk the fund bears. |
A practical checklist for analyzing a specific review
- Identify the exact benchmark. Confirm whether it is a standard, small-cap, factor, ESG or custom MSCI index and read the current methodology and review notice.
- Record announcement and effective dates. Do not assume every MSCI index follows the same calendar.
- Estimate the weight change. Compare the old and pro forma weights and note additions, deletions and size-segment moves.
- Assess security liquidity. Check typical turnover, free float, bid-ask spread, foreign ownership limits and the local market’s closing time.
- Measure ETF exposure. Record holdings before and after the review, cash, creation or redemption activity and the fund’s replication method.
- Track market-price behavior. Save intraday volume, closing volume and the ETF premium or discount to NAV around the announcement and effective date.
- Calculate tracking results correctly. Compare the ETF’s total return with the benchmark total-return index over the event window and over a longer period, including fees and taxes.
- Separate flow from fundamentals. Look for earnings, corporate actions or macro news that could explain a move independently of the rebalance.
MSCI’s official resources provide constituent weights, review additions and deletions, end-of-day index performance and a list of exchange-traded products linked to its indexes. Use those files together with the ETF issuer’s dated holdings and NAV data; holdings can change after publication.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Treating a predicted addition as certain: Estimates can be wrong, and the market may price them in before the announcement.
- Assuming every price move is permanent: Mechanical demand can fade after implementation, while fundamental news can make a move persist.
- Using the ETF quote as the benchmark return: Premiums and discounts mean the quote is not the same as NAV or index performance.
- Ignoring the closing auction: A closing print with exceptional volume may not represent the price available for a normal-sized order during the day.
- Comparing funds only by expense ratio: Spreads, taxes, sampling and execution can outweigh a small fee difference during a large rebalance.
- Generalizing historical statistics: The 2025 abnormal-return estimate and MSCI’s historical turnover comparisons describe defined samples and periods, not future guarantees.
What the historical figures do—and do not—show
MSCI reported that both the MSCI World and MSCI Emerging Markets indexes were down 34% year to date as of May 12, 2020, in a discussion of that year’s market environment. It also said May 2020 semi-annual index-review turnover was in line with historical May semi-annual averages over a 12-year comparison period. Those figures provide context for one review and market regime; they are not a forecast for current turnover or returns.
The central lesson is mechanical: a rebalance changes who must own what, when they must trade and how much liquidity is available. The observable result can be a temporary price shock, a NAV-versus-market-price gap, higher tracking error and a burst of capital flow. The magnitude must be measured for the particular index, ETF and review rather than inferred from the MSCI name alone.
