How Mining Companies Manage Gold-Mine Tailings and Water Pollution

Gold mines manage tailings and water pollution through a site-specific system that runs from ore testing and facility design to closure and decades of monitoring. The system combines engineered storage, clean-water diversion, seepage collection, chemical treatment, instrumentation, independent review and emergency planning. No single dam design or treatment method is safe everywhere: geology, climate, tailings chemistry, seismic setting and the mine’s water balance determine the controls.

What gold-mine tailings are—and why they remain a risk after mining

Tailings are the finely ground solids left after a mill has recovered the valuable minerals, together with process water and runoff. In a gold operation they may contain residual reagents, dissolved metals and minerals that can generate acid when exposed to air and water. Tailings are usually placed in a tailings-storage facility (TSF), which can include an embankment, impoundment, ponds, beaches of deposited solids, drainage systems and reclaim-water infrastructure.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

A TSF is not an ordinary water reservoir or a temporary waste pile. Its physical stability, water levels and chemistry can change as deposition continues, as seasons alter inflows and as the material consolidates. The facility can therefore remain an engineered-risk asset after the mill closes. The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) states that “Each TSF is unique. Site conditions, mineral characteristics and other aspects of each mine site dictate appropriate tailings technology and storage solutions.”

That site-specific principle affects every decision: the type of retaining structure, how much water is stored, where seepage is collected, whether tailings are thickened or filtered, how an earthquake is considered, and what landform and water quality must be achieved at closure.

The lifecycle system used to manage tailings

1. Characterise the ore, tailings and site

Before selecting a storage method, engineers test the tailings’ grain-size distribution, density, settling and consolidation behavior. Geochemical testing looks for acid-generating minerals, metals that could leach and residual process chemicals. The site investigation covers foundation geology, groundwater, faults, seismic hazard, rainfall patterns, floods, evaporation and available space.

These data are combined in design models. A water-balance model estimates precipitation, runoff, process-water inputs, evaporation, seepage, reclaim-water recovery and possible discharge. The model is run for normal, unusually wet and emergency conditions so the design does not depend on a single average year.

2. Choose a storage and water-management arrangement

Depending on the results, a mine may use conventional slurry deposition, thickened tailings, filtered (dry-stack) tailings, a lined pond, a water-shedding cover or a combination of systems. The choice is not a universal ranking. A dry-stack arrangement may reduce stored water but can require substantial filtration, energy and earthworks; a conventional impoundment may suit a particular climate and foundation but demands rigorous water-level and embankment control.

Engineers also lay out diversion channels, underdrains, seepage-collection ponds, reclaim pumps and water-treatment facilities. Liners or low-permeability zones are used where the geology and water-quality assessment show that limiting contact with groundwater is necessary.

3. Establish accountable governance

Physical construction is only one part of safe management. The operator assigns decision rights, names technically competent leaders and documents who can change deposition rates, lower a pond, order an inspection or activate an emergency plan. Independent technical review is used to challenge assumptions and examine design, construction, operation and closure decisions.

The Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) was developed after catastrophic failures, including the 2019 Brumadinho disaster in Brazil, in which 272 people died. ICMM’s 2021 conformance protocols map 77 requirements to 219 criteria. Those numbers describe the assessment framework; they do not mean that every mine has achieved conformance.

ICMM’s second edition of its Tailings Management Good Practice Guide, published on 19 February 2025, describes two connected elements: governance of tailings management and implementation of good engineering practices across the lifecycle. In practice, a technically sound embankment can still be unsafe if operating controls, escalation authority or emergency communication fail.

How operators prevent tailings-dam failures

Control deposition and pond location

Operators place tailings according to an approved deposition plan rather than simply filling the lowest point. The plan controls discharge points, beach geometry, beach width, density and the location of the supernatant pond. Keeping the pond away from the embankment, where feasible, reduces loading and limits the amount of water that could escape during a breach.

Surveyors and operators check deposited elevations, beach slopes and freeboard—the vertical distance between the water surface and the crest. Freeboard provides storage for rainfall, runoff and operational variability. Reclaim-water systems pump usable water back to the mill, reducing the pond volume while preserving enough water for process needs and pump access.

Manage seepage and the foundation

Seepage-collection drains, filters and toe drains intercept water moving through or beneath the facility. Collected water is returned to the process circuit or treated. Groundwater wells and piezometers show whether seepage pressures or water levels are changing outside expected ranges. Foundation preparation, zoning of embankment materials and erosion protection are selected for the local geology and hydraulic conditions.

Inspect and instrument the facility

Routine inspections look for cracking, settlement, erosion, slumping, wet spots, blocked drains, unusual pond movement and damage from storms or animals. Instruments can include piezometers for pore-water pressure, survey monuments for movement, flow meters for drains and remote or manual water-level measurements. Data are compared with design assumptions and previous readings, not viewed as isolated numbers.

Use trigger-action-response plans

A trigger-action-response plan (TARP) sets thresholds and pre-agreed actions. A rising piezometric level, unexpected seepage flow or accelerating deformation may require a second inspection, reduced deposition, increased pumping, engineering review or evacuation planning. The value of a TARP is that it converts a warning into a specific decision before conditions become a failure.

Prepare for abnormal and emergency conditions

Emergency plans address extreme rainfall, earthquakes, power loss, blocked spillways, uncontrolled seepage and a potential release. They identify notification chains, access routes, downstream warning methods, equipment and agencies responsible for response. Exercises and updates are needed because personnel, communities and site conditions change.

How mines keep clean water separate from contaminated water

Divert uncontaminated runoff

The least expensive water to treat is water that never becomes contaminated. Diversion channels, berms and grading route clean catchment runoff around waste rock, tailings and process areas. Separating clean water reduces the volume entering ponds and treatment plants, preserves storage capacity and lowers the chance that a storm will overwhelm a collection system.

Limit contact with reactive materials

Mine plans limit the time that oxygenated water contacts acid-forming or toxic materials. Covers, low-permeability layers, liners, encapsulation and controlled drainage can reduce infiltration. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidance identifies preventing contact with acid- or toxic-forming materials and minimizing contact time as core pollution controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Collect, reuse and model mine water

Contact water from the TSF, ore stockpiles, waste-rock facilities and plant areas is routed to lined ponds or sumps. Pumps may return it to processing, while excess water is treated before a permitted discharge. A continuously updated water balance tracks storage volume, inflows, outflows, evaporation and seepage. The IFC review of the Aurora Gold project describes modelling precipitation and inflows and outflows, then treating collected excess water before discharge.

Acid mine drainage and metal pollution

What causes acidic drainage

Acid mine drainage forms when water and oxygen react with sulfur-bearing minerals, often sulfides. The reaction can generate sulfuric acid, lower the water’s pH and dissolve metals from rock and tailings. The U.S. EPA defines acid mine drainage as “the formation and movement of highly acidic water rich in heavy metals.” The chemistry varies by deposit: not every gold mine contains the same sulfide minerals or produces the same acidity or metal concentrations.

Predict the potential before construction

Static tests estimate whether tailings and waste rock contain acid-producing minerals or enough neutralizing minerals to consume the acid. Kinetic tests expose samples to repeated wetting and oxidation to observe how chemistry changes over time. Results inform material segregation, cover design, drainage sizing and the need for long-term treatment.

Prevent, capture and treat

Prevention can include isolating reactive material from oxygen and water, placing it under water where appropriate, covering it with low-permeability and oxygen-limiting layers, or blending it with neutralizing material. Collection drains and wells capture water that does become contaminated.

Active treatment typically adds alkaline chemicals to neutralize acidity and precipitate dissolved metals, followed by solids separation and sludge management. Passive systems—such as constructed wetlands, anoxic limestone drains or sulfate-reducing bioreactors—use chemistry, residence time and biological processes with less continuous mechanical input. Passive systems can be suitable for modest, predictable flows but may require large areas and maintenance; high or variable flows often require active treatment. The correct choice depends on pH, acidity, metals, flow, temperature and discharge criteria.

Cyanide management in gold processing

Cyanide control is separate from acid-drainage control because it concerns a process reagent rather than only naturally occurring rock chemistry. A mine’s circuit may recover and recycle cyanide, destroy residual cyanide before tailings deposition and monitor tailings water and discharge points.

In an IFC review of the Aurora Gold project, the cyanide-detoxification circuit has a design target of less than 0.5 mg/L weak-acid-dissociable (WAD) cyanide in as-deposited tailings. That is a project design target, not a universal legal limit for gold mines. Regulatory thresholds and monitoring requirements differ by jurisdiction and permit.

The same review expects further cyanide reduction in the tailings facility through processes including sunlight, volatilization and complex formation. Operators still need sampling and laboratory analysis because degradation rates depend on pond depth, weather, chemistry, residence time and the specific cyanide compounds present. Detoxification performance is verified at the circuit outlet and, where required, at reclaim-water and discharge locations.

Independent reviewers can examine data quality, model assumptions and whether corrective actions were completed.

Closure and post-closure: what happens when the mill stops

Plan closure from the beginning

Closure design starts during mine planning because the final landform, cover materials, water pathways and treatment obligations influence today’s construction. Progressive rehabilitation can reshape completed areas, replace growth media and establish vegetation while other cells remain active. Early work exposes problems before the entire facility is closed.

Stabilize the landform and water system

A closed TSF may receive a dry cover, water cover, erosion-resistant surface or another design suited to its climate and geochemistry. The objective can include limiting infiltration and oxygen entry, preventing erosion, controlling dust, supporting vegetation and keeping slopes stable. Drainage channels and spillways are designed for long-term rainfall and runoff rather than only the operating period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monitor until success criteria are met

Post-closure work can include inspections, groundwater and surface-water sampling, piezometric readings, settlement surveys, vegetation checks and maintenance of drains or treatment systems. ICMM’s 2025 guidance emphasizes explicit closure success criteria, governance during closure and post-closure, long-term monitoring and maintenance. A site is not released simply because production has ended; release depends on demonstrated physical stability and acceptable water quality under agreed criteria.

How to compare a mine’s tailings and water controls

Because technologies are site-specific, a meaningful comparison uses the same questions for every operation rather than declaring one storage method universally safest.

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Consequence and failure risk What is downstream of the facility, how is consequence classified, and are independent reviews and emergency exercises documented?
Water balance and climate resilience What are the design inflows, extreme-weather assumptions, freeboard, reclaim capacity and contingency storage?
Acid and metal potential Were static and kinetic tests performed, and are reactive materials isolated, covered, captured and treated?
Cyanide performance What cyanide species are measured, where are samples taken, what treatment target applies and is it a project target or a legal limit?
Monitoring and response Are instrumentation, inspection frequency, trigger levels, response authority and data disclosure clear?
Closure liability What final landform, cover, water treatment, maintenance period and financial assurance are specified?
Community and regulatory duties Are permits, monitoring results, emergency contacts and material changes disclosed to affected people?

Common warning signs and corrective actions

  • Water approaches the embankment crest: increase monitoring, verify freeboard, maximize approved reclaim or pumping capacity and obtain engineering direction; do not improvise an unapproved discharge.
  • Seepage becomes cloudy, warmer or more abundant: sample it, check drains and piezometers, inspect the toe and compare the result with trigger levels.
  • Pore-water pressures or deformation accelerate: activate the TARP, restrict deposition if directed, bring in the responsible engineer and escalate emergency communications when thresholds require it.
  • Downstream pH falls or metals rise: confirm the result with quality-controlled sampling, trace the source through the water balance, capture the flow and adjust active or passive treatment.
  • Cyanide exceeds the circuit target: hold or route affected water according to the operating plan, investigate detoxification chemistry and residence time, and prevent unauthorized discharge.
  • Closure monitoring shows erosion or seepage: repair covers and drainage, revise maintenance and treatment, and continue monitoring rather than treating closure as complete.

The central lesson is that tailings safety and water protection are one connected lifecycle program. Stable construction without disciplined operations is insufficient; water treatment without source control can become permanent and expensive; and a closure plan without funded monitoring leaves risk for future communities. The strongest programs join site-specific engineering with accountable governance, measurable triggers, transparent reporting and continued care after the last ounce of gold is produced.
