Meta’s retreat from news and professional fact-checking is best understood as a change in Facebook’s role, not a single shutdown. The company closed the dedicated Facebook News tab in the United States and Australia in April 2024, then began replacing its US third-party fact-checking program with Community Notes in 2025. News links and publisher Pages remained available, but the curated discovery surface and the previous moderation system were being dismantled. Meta says the changes follow user behavior and a desire to reduce enforcement errors; publishers and outside analysts see a continuing decline in Facebook’s value as a route to news.

What “Meta’s biggest mistake” means here

“Biggest mistake” is an interpretation, not a confession by Meta. The phrase fits a strategic retreat from products and policies that made Facebook a gatekeeper for news: a dedicated news destination, formal arrangements with publishers, and professional third-party fact-checking. Meta has not identified any one of those decisions as its biggest mistake.

The more supportable conclusion is narrower. Meta is reducing the company’s responsibility for curating news and adjudicating disputed claims, while putting more emphasis on short-form video, user-selected content and lower-cost automated enforcement. That matters because Facebook still reaches a very large audience, so a change in ranking or context can affect what people encounter even when no content is removed.

What the Facebook News shutdown actually changed

Meta announced on February 29, 2024 that it would deprecate Facebook News in the United States and Australia in early April. The company said the tab had already been deprecated in the United Kingdom, France and Germany during 2023.

Facebook News was a dedicated tab for news stories. Closing it removed that specific, curated discovery surface. It did not remove every news item from Facebook. Users could still see news links in the ordinary Feed, and publishers could continue posting links, videos and other material on their Pages.

Feature What changed What remained
Facebook News tab Deprecated in the US and Australia in early April 2024; previously deprecated in the UK, France and Germany in 2023. The dedicated tab was no longer available in those markets.
News in Feed No blanket removal was announced. News links could still appear in users’ ordinary Feeds.
Publisher Pages No ban on publisher Pages was announced. Organizations could continue posting links and content on their Pages.

The practical difference is discovery. A dedicated tab gave people a predictable place to browse a selection of stories. Feed distribution is personalized and competes with every other format on Facebook, including entertainment, posts from friends and short-form video. A publisher can remain present on the platform yet receive far less attention if its links are shown less often or ranked below other material.

Meta’s explanation for closing the tab

Meta said it wanted to concentrate investment on products people value, including short-form video. It reported that use of Facebook News in the US and Australia had fallen by more than 80% in the preceding year. It also said news represented less than 3% of what people worldwide saw in Facebook Feed. Those are figures supplied by Meta, not an independent audit, and they describe the company’s rationale rather than proving why usage changed.

For readers, the key point is that Meta characterized the decision as a product-prioritization choice. The company did not say news links were prohibited or that publishers had to leave Facebook.

Why publishers experienced the closure differently

A tab closure can have a larger effect than its name suggests. It removes one place where a reader could intentionally seek news, rather than waiting for an algorithm to insert a link into a mixed Feed. It can also reduce the number of predictable referral opportunities for publishers.

The Associated Press reported that news links and publisher Pages remained after the closure. It quoted Poynter media analyst Rick Edmonds, who said organizations facing declining Facebook referral traffic had focused on alternatives such as search and newsletters. That shift is strategically important: publishers become less dependent on a platform whose ranking rules, product surfaces and policy priorities can change without notice.

News organizations therefore face two separate questions. First, can they still post on Facebook? Generally, yes, where the service is available and their accounts comply with platform rules. Second, can Facebook still be relied on to deliver a stable audience? The News-tab decision is evidence that the answer is weaker than it was when Facebook presented a dedicated news destination.

The 2025 move away from US third-party fact-checking

On January 7, 2025, Meta announced that it would end its US third-party fact-checking program and move toward Community Notes. The announcement also described looser restrictions on some topics, a narrower focus for automated enforcement, and a plan to restore political content with more personalized ranking.

Joel Kaplan, Meta’s chief global affairs officer, gave the company’s justification: “Too much harmless content gets censored, too many people find themselves wrongly locked up in ‘Facebook jail,’ and we are often too slow to respond when they do.” Those are Meta’s evaluative claims, not independently established measurements.

Meta’s stated enforcement plan was to concentrate automated systems on illegal and high-severity violations. It said civic content from Pages and people a user follows would be ranked through explicit and implicit signals. In plain language, political material that had been reduced or limited under earlier policies could become more visible, but the amount shown would depend on personalization rather than a universal switch applied identically to every account.

How Community Notes differs from professional fact-checking

Under Meta’s description, Community Notes are written and rated by contributors. A note is intended to appear when contributors with differing viewpoints agree that it adds useful context. Meta said notes would be limited to 500 characters, require a supporting link and initially omit the author’s name. It also said notes would add context without the distribution penalties associated with fact-check labels.

Distribution effect Meta’s prior system could attach labels and reduce distribution under its policies. Meta said Notes would provide context without the distribution penalties associated with fact-check labels.

This is a change in mechanism, not proof that one system is accurate, impartial or more effective. Community agreement can broaden participation, but it can also make timing, contributor recruitment and the quality of supporting links decisive. Professional review can provide specialized expertise, while critics may question the independence or consistency of participating organizations. Meta’s announcements describe the design; they do not establish the real-world accuracy of either approach.

When and where the transition happened

Meta’s March 2025 update said testing of the new US approach would begin on March 18. On April 7, Meta said the US third-party fact-checking program was ending and that Community Notes would begin appearing gradually on Facebook, Instagram and Threads while testing continued.

Meta described the US rollout as staged. It also said third-party fact-checking would remain in other countries until Notes launched there. Because availability can differ by country and change during a rollout, a statement that Community Notes exists “everywhere” would be too broad. Users and publishers should check Meta’s current documentation for their market before assuming that a particular label, note or appeal path is available.

What the engagement evidence shows—and does not show

A 2025 preprint by Talaga, Wertz, Batorski and Wojcieszak examined 5,243,302 Facebook posts from 40 news organizations and 7,875,372,958 user reactions, along with posts from 21 non-news Pages, covering January 1, 2016 through February 13, 2025. It reported a 78% decline in reactions to news between 2021 and 2024 and an increase in reactions after the 2025 changes, particularly for lower-quality sources.

Those numbers describe observed engagement in a large dataset; they do not isolate one cause. Algorithm changes, audience habits, publisher strategy, major events and broader platform trends can move at the same time. The paper is a preprint, so its publication status and version should be confirmed before treating it as settled scholarship. It is useful evidence that news interaction changed, not a definitive demonstration that one Meta announcement caused the change.

What users should expect on Facebook

News discovery is less intentional

Without the News tab, a person who wants headlines must use Feed recommendations, follow specific Pages, search, or visit publishers directly. Feed ranking can still surface journalism, but it is mixed with personal posts and other formats. Following a Page does not guarantee that every post will appear.

Political content may return selectively

Meta said it would restore political content with personalized ranking. That does not mean every user will see the same political posts or that all political material will be promoted. Explicit choices, such as following a Page, and implicit signals, such as past interactions, can influence what appears.

Context may arrive through notes rather than labels

Where Community Notes is active, a qualifying post may receive contributor-written context instead of the previous third-party fact-checking treatment. Meta said the note would need a supporting link and cross-viewpoint agreement. The company’s design claims should not be read as a guarantee that every disputed post will receive a note or that a note will be correct.

What publishers should do about the shift

  1. Separate publishing from distribution. Continue using a Facebook Page if it reaches a useful audience, but do not treat the platform as the only route to readers.
  2. Measure direct outcomes. Track referral sessions, newsletter registrations and returning visitors separately. A large follower count can coexist with weak traffic.
  3. Build owned channels. Search visibility, email newsletters and a publisher’s own site give an organization more control than a single platform feed. AP’s reporting identified search and newsletters as routes publishers were already pursuing.
  4. Prepare for policy variation. Record which countries, accounts and formats are covered by each moderation or fact-checking system. A US change may not apply to readers elsewhere.
  5. Give readers context off-platform. Link to primary documents, explain evidence and correct errors visibly. A platform note is not a substitute for a publisher’s own standards.

How to interpret Meta’s strategy

Three decisions point in the same direction. Closing Facebook News reduces investment in a specialized news product. Ending US third-party fact-checking transfers more of the context-setting process to contributors and automated systems. Restoring personalized political ranking accepts more user-tailored civic content rather than trying to apply one broad visibility policy.

Meta’s public rationale is that people used the News tab less, that news occupied a small share of Feed, and that enforcement produced too many mistakes. Independent observers add a market explanation: declining referrals made Facebook less central to publishers, so the company had less incentive to operate a dedicated news gate.

Neither explanation requires the claim that Meta has abandoned news entirely. The better description is a retreat from being a primary news destination and a centralized referee. News can still circulate on Facebook, but its path to an audience is more dependent on personalized ranking, individual follows and whatever context contributors provide.

Bottom line for readers and publishers

Meta’s “quiet dismantling” is a series of consequential pullbacks rather than one dramatic ban. The Facebook News tab disappeared in specified markets, while ordinary news links and publisher Pages remained. In the United States, the company then shifted from professional third-party fact-checking toward Community Notes through a staged 2025 rollout. Meta says these moves improve product focus and reduce mistaken enforcement; outside evidence shows declining news engagement but cannot assign all of that change to one decision.

For readers, the result is less guaranteed access to a curated news shelf and more reliance on personalized Feed ranking. For publishers, it is a warning to treat Facebook as one distribution channel—not the foundation of an audience strategy—and to invest in direct relationships that a platform change cannot remove overnight.
