If your Medicare plan is leaving Medicare, your prescription coverage does not automatically move to a replacement plan. You must use the Special Enrollment Period (SEP) that matches the type of exit, compare plans available at your address, enroll, and verify the new plan’s effective date. Medicare warns that going 63 consecutive days without other creditable prescription drug coverage can lead to a later enrollment wait and a Part D late-enrollment penalty.
The exact deadline depends on whether Medicare terminated the contract, the plan ended it (or agreed with Medicare to end it), or the contract was not renewed. Start with the notice from your plan and the contract end date; do not rely on a generic “two-month” rule.

“Leaving Medicare” describes several different contract events. Medicare assigns a different enrollment window to each one, so the wording in your notice matters. The following schedules come from Medicare’s Special Enrollment Period guidance.

Medicare-initiated termination
When Medicare terminates a contract, the SEP opens one month before the contract ends and remains available through two complete months afterward. If you want another Medicare Advantage plan, enroll before the current plan terminates; otherwise Medicare says you will move to Original Medicare for medical coverage.
Plan-initiated termination or a mutual termination
If the plan ends its contract or Medicare and the plan mutually agree to end it, the SEP starts two months before the contract end date and lasts through one full month afterward. Medicare allows a switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or to a Medicare drug plan during this period.
Nonrenewal
A nonrenewed contract follows a calendar-based window: December 8 through the final day of February of the next year. If you do not select another Medicare Advantage plan before the old plan ends, Medicare says you will be enrolled in Original Medicare.

Medicare describes more than one mailing related to a plan’s departure. A Plan Non-Renewal Notice is sent by the plan in October when it will leave Medicare for the coming year. It tells members to look for a new plan for next year’s coverage. Details are on Medicare’s Plan Non-Renewal Notice page.

A different mailing, the CMS Non-renewal Action Notice, appears on Medicare’s costs and coverage mailings page. That January notice explains that current Part D coverage has ended because the plan left Medicare and tells the person to choose a new drug plan soon if they have not already done so.
Do not treat the October advance notice and the January after-coverage notice as the same document. Keep the notice, identify the contract end date, and use the event description to determine which SEP applies.
Protect your prescriptions step by step
- Find the official notice. Search your mail and plan account for the plan’s nonrenewal or termination communication. Write down the exact wording, contract end date, and any enrollment instructions.
- Match the event to the SEP. Use the termination, plan-ended, or nonrenewal category above. If the notice is unclear, compare its language with Medicare’s SEP categories rather than assuming that every exit has the same deadline.
- List every prescription you take. Include the drug name, strength, dosage and how often you use it. Note your preferred pharmacies and whether you use mail order. This list lets you check the replacement plan’s formulary and pharmacy terms.
- Compare plans offered at your address. Medicare plan availability and formularies are location-specific. Compare a stand-alone Part D plan with Medicare Advantage plans that include drug coverage, and check whether each plan covers your prescriptions on acceptable terms.
- Check the medical-care consequence. If your current Medicare Advantage plan includes drug coverage and you select a stand-alone Part D plan, Medicare says you are disenrolled from the entire Medicare Advantage plan, including its medical benefit, and return to Original Medicare for medical services. Decide how you will receive medical coverage before enrolling.
- Enroll during the applicable window. Submit the enrollment request through the channel identified in your notice or Medicare’s plan-enrollment process. Save the confirmation, application number and the date you submitted it.
- Verify the effective date. The new plan should send a letter confirming when coverage starts. Check that date against the old plan’s end date; do not assume that submitting an application immediately transfers your prescriptions.
- Keep a transition file. Store the notice, enrollment confirmation and effective-date letter together. If a pharmacy claim is rejected during the change, these documents establish which plan should be active on the date of service.
Compare replacement coverage on four critical axes
Medicare’s guidance supports a focused comparison rather than a search for a universally “best” plan. The right choice depends on your address, prescriptions and desired medical coverage.

Prescription fit comes before convenience
A plan that is available in your county is not necessarily suitable for your medication list. Check each drug, dose and formulation, then review any stated coverage conditions and the pharmacies that participate. Also review the plan’s published premium, deductible and cost-sharing terms so a low headline premium does not obscure higher costs for the medicines you actually use.

Medical coverage can change with the enrollment choice
The most consequential choice may be the type of plan, not the brand of plan. Moving from an MA plan with drug coverage to stand-alone Part D ends the MA health benefit and places medical services under Original Medicare. Compare how you will obtain medical care, not just whether your prescriptions appear on a drug list.
The effective date controls the handoff
Old drug coverage ends when the new drug coverage begins. The replacement plan’s confirmation letter is the controlling evidence for that start date. If the date is missing or does not match what you expected, contact the new plan promptly and keep the written response.
Why the 63-day rule matters
Medicare’s Part D switching guidance warns that a person who goes 63 or more consecutive days without other creditable prescription drug coverage may have to wait for an enrollment period to join a plan and may owe a late-enrollment penalty. The risk is created by a gap in creditable coverage, not merely by receiving a notice that a plan is leaving.
To reduce that risk, submit the replacement enrollment during the SEP, confirm the effective date in writing, and check what coverage applies on every day between the old plan’s end and the new plan’s start. If another source of prescription coverage will bridge the transition, verify that it is creditable before relying on it.

What to do if drug coverage has already ended
If you receive the January CMS Non-renewal Action Notice, Medicare is describing a Part D plan that has already ended because it left Medicare. Choose a new drug plan as soon as possible, using the SEP and dates that apply to your situation. Start with the prescriptions you need now, then verify the plan’s effective date and retain the confirmation letter.
Do not wait for an automatic transfer. A plan exit does not enroll you in a replacement Part D plan, and a prescription claim can be affected by the exact date on which the new coverage becomes effective.
Common situations and the right response
“My notice says nonrenewal, but I am still covered this year.”
Treat it as advance notice for next year. Use the October Plan Non-Renewal Notice to identify the contract end date, then compare plans during the December 8-through-February nonrenewal SEP.
“My Medicare Advantage plan included drug coverage, and I found a stand-alone Part D plan.”
Before enrolling, decide how you will receive medical services under Original Medicare. Medicare says the stand-alone Part D enrollment disenrolls you from the entire MA plan, not only its drug benefit.

“I enrolled, but I have no start-date letter.”
Do not assume that the application date is the coverage date. Request written confirmation from the new plan and compare the confirmed start date with the old plan’s termination date.
“My medicine is not on the replacement plan’s list.”
Recheck the exact drug, strength and formulation and compare other plans available at your address. A plan’s availability alone does not establish that it covers your prescriptions on suitable terms.
A final checklist before the old plan ends
- Notice saved and exit type identified.
- Contract end date and matching SEP deadline written on your calendar.
- Complete prescription list checked against the replacement plan’s formulary and pharmacy terms.
- Choice made between stand-alone Part D and Medicare Advantage with drug coverage.
- Medical coverage arrangement understood, especially when leaving Medicare Advantage.
- Enrollment confirmation received and effective date verified.
- Documents retained in case a pharmacy or plan needs proof of coverage.
For official rules and current enrollment categories, consult Medicare’s Special Enrollment Periods page, the Part D switching guidance, and the special-circumstances guidance. The 2026 Medicare & You handbook also describes exceptional-circumstance enrollment rules, but your plan’s notice remains essential for identifying your specific deadline.
