How Long Does a Failed or Wrong UPI Payment Refund Take in India?

For a failed UPI transfer in which your account was debited but the beneficiary was not credited, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) requires auto-reversal by T+1 working day. For a UPI merchant payment where your account was debited but the merchant did not receive confirmation, the limit is T+5 working days. If either limit is missed, RBI’s framework provides ₹100 per day compensation, credited automatically where applicable.

A payment sent successfully to the wrong UPI ID is different: it is not a failed transaction, and neither the T+1 nor T+5 auto-reversal rule guarantees recovery. Contact your bank immediately and raise a complaint through the participating UPI app.

First identify what happened to the payment

The refund timeline depends on the final transaction state, not simply on the fact that money left your account. Open the UPI app’s transaction history and check whether the entry is marked failed, pending or successful. Also note the transaction reference number, date, amount, beneficiary or merchant name, and the bank account that was debited.

Situation Applicable guidance What it means
Account debited; another account was not credited Auto-reversal by T+1 working day if the beneficiary cannot be credited; ₹100 per day after the limit The standard failed UPI transfer case
Account debited; merchant received no confirmation Auto-reversal within T+5 working days; ₹100 per day after the limit Applies to a failed merchant transaction, not every later request for a merchant refund
Transaction shows pending, debit is visible, beneficiary is not credited NPCI customer guidance says the beneficiary may receive the money within 48 hours after the beneficiary bank completes settlements Wait for the status to resolve, while reporting an outstanding debit to your bank
Transaction declined NPCI describes real-time reversal for declines If the debit remains, contact the bank rather than assuming the reversal completed
Payment completed to the wrong person No guaranteed failed-payment deadline; initiated UPI payments cannot be stopped Request recovery immediately through the bank and UPI complaint process

Failed UPI transfer to another bank account: T+1 working day

RBI’s failed-transaction framework covers a transfer in which the payer’s account is debited but the beneficiary cannot be credited. The bank or payment system must reverse the amount no later than T+1 working day. “T” is the transaction date. RBI later clarified that the relevant “days” in this framework are working days, not a simple 24-hour clock.

The reversal is normally automatic. You do not have to wait for the beneficiary to complain or obtain a separate approval before the failed debit is returned. The formal limit is an outer limit for resolving the failed transaction, so an earlier credit is possible.

How to count T+1

Count the next applicable working day after the transaction date. Weekends and bank holidays do not convert the rule into a fixed number of hours. The exact posting time can also depend on when the transaction was recorded and when the participating banks process the reversal.

Failed UPI merchant payment: T+5 working days

A different rule applies when you paid a merchant, your account was debited, and the merchant location or system did not receive confirmation. RBI allows auto-reversal within T+5 working days for this category. If the reversal exceeds that outer limit, the framework provides ₹100 per day compensation.

This rule concerns a failed merchant transaction with missing confirmation. It is not a blanket deadline for a refund requested after you return goods, cancel an order, or reject a service. Those are merchant-refund matters and follow the merchant’s process.

Merchant refunds after a successful payment

NPCI’s customer guidance says that, when goods are returned or a service is rejected after a successful UPI payment, the merchant should ask its bank to refund the charged amount through the defined process. That is different from an automatic reversal because the merchant payment failed. Keep the order, cancellation and refund reference details when dealing with the merchant.

What “pending” means when your account was debited

A pending status means the transaction has not reached a final success or failure state. Do not treat it as proof that a refund has already been initiated. NPCI’s FAQ says that, for a pending transaction where the amount is debited but not credited to the beneficiary, the beneficiary may receive the money within 48 hours once the beneficiary bank completes its daily settlements.

Check the transaction again in the app and in your bank statement. If it remains pending or the beneficiary still has no credit, contact the bank with the reference number. The bank can determine whether the transaction eventually succeeded, failed and is awaiting reversal, or requires manual investigation.

Declined transactions and the one-hour customer guidance

NPCI describes UPI as providing real-time reversals for declined transactions. If a declined payment leaves an outstanding debit, report it instead of making repeated payments and risking a duplicate charge.

NPCI’s FAQ also tells customers to contact their bank if a failed-payment refund has not arrived within one hour. That is customer-facing guidance for the described failed-payment situation. It should not be read as replacing RBI’s T+1 and T+5 outer limits, which depend on the transaction category and are expressed in working days.

Payments sent to the wrong UPI ID or person

A successful transfer to an unintended recipient is not a failed transaction. NPCI states that once a UPI payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped. Consequently, the automatic failed-payment deadlines do not promise a refund by T+1 or T+5 for a wrong-recipient payment.

Act immediately

  1. Save the transaction reference number, date, amount, recipient’s UPI ID or account details, and screenshots of the successful status.
  2. Contact your bank promptly and explain that the transfer was made to the wrong recipient. Ask the bank to register a wrong-credit or mistaken-transfer complaint.
  3. Use the complaint or help option in the UPI app used for the payment. NPCI’s complaint process forwards the case to the relevant member institution.
  4. Do not send additional money to the recipient as a condition of getting the first payment back, and do not assume that a complaint guarantees recovery.

Recovery can depend on the receiving institution and recipient cooperation. Current NPCI operational material includes a FY 2026–27 circular concerning turnaround time for fraud and wrong-credit chargebacks, but the index entry alone does not establish one customer-facing refund period for every wrong-recipient transfer.

How compensation works when RBI’s limit is missed

RBI’s 2019 framework sets compensation of ₹100 per day for a UPI funds-transfer reversal delayed beyond T+1 and for a UPI merchant-payment reversal delayed beyond T+5. RBI describes the prescribed turnaround time as the outer limit for resolving failed transactions.

Where the compensation rule applies, it should be credited suo motu—automatically, without waiting for you to submit a separate claim. Keep the account statement showing the debit, reversal date and any later credit so you can identify whether the amount and compensation were posted correctly.

What to do if the money has not come back

  1. Confirm the status. Record whether the app says failed, pending or successful. A successful status requires a different approach from a failed debit.
  2. Collect the evidence. Keep the UPI reference number, amount, date, payer account, beneficiary or merchant details, screenshots and bank statement entry.
  3. Raise the in-app complaint. Select the transaction in the participating UPI app and submit the issue under failed, pending, wrong recipient, unauthorized or another matching category.
  4. Contact the bank. Give the reference number and ask for a complaint or service-request number. Ask the bank to state whether it classifies the event as a failed transfer, merchant confirmation failure, pending transaction, wrong credit or unauthorized payment.
  5. Follow up after the applicable limit. If a failed transfer has passed T+1 working day, or a failed merchant payment has passed T+5 working days, ask why the reversal and any applicable ₹100-per-day compensation have not been posted.
  6. Escalate an unresolved complaint. Retain the bank’s response and complaint number. Under the current RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme FAQ, an Ombudsman complaint is generally available when the regulated entity has not replied within 30 days or when you are dissatisfied with its response, subject to the scheme’s eligibility conditions.

Fraud, unauthorized debits and unidentified transactions

If you do not recognize the transaction, suspect fraud, or did not authorize the payment, report it directly to your bank immediately. NPCI directs these complaints to the bank. Use the bank’s urgent reporting channel, request a complaint number, and follow its instructions for securing the account. Do not wait for the ordinary failed-payment reversal window when the issue may be unauthorized activity.

Common mistakes that delay resolution

  • Using the wrong deadline: T+1 is for a failed transfer to another account; T+5 is for a failed merchant payment with no confirmation.
  • Counting calendar days: RBI’s framework uses working days after its clarification, so weekends and bank holidays matter.
  • Calling a wrong-recipient payment “failed”: A completed payment does not qualify automatically for failed-transaction reversal.
  • Making a second payment while the first is pending: Wait for the status or confirm with the beneficiary and bank to avoid duplicate payment.
  • Omitting the reference number: Banks and app support need the transaction identifier to trace the debit and settlement messages.
  • Confusing a merchant refund with reversal: A refund after a return or cancellation normally requires the merchant to initiate it through its bank.

Worked examples

Example 1: failed person-to-person transfer

You send money to a beneficiary, your account is debited, and the beneficiary is not credited. If the transaction is ultimately classified as a failed transfer, the RBI outer limit is T+1 working day. If the reversal takes longer, the ₹100-per-day compensation rule applies to the delay under the framework.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example 2: merchant received no confirmation

You pay at a merchant, your account is debited, and the merchant’s system shows no confirmation. This is the merchant-payment failure category, for which the reversal limit is T+5 working days. It is not the same as returning an item after a successfully confirmed payment.

Example 3: successful payment to the wrong person

The app shows success, but you selected the wrong UPI ID. There is no automatic T+1 or T+5 promise. Contact the bank and app immediately, provide the reference number, and follow the wrong-credit complaint route.

Questions to ask your bank

  • What final status does the bank’s system show for this reference number?
  • Is this being handled as a failed transfer, failed merchant confirmation, pending transaction, wrong credit or unauthorized payment?
  • What is the applicable RBI outer limit and the expected reversal date?
  • Has the ₹100-per-day compensation calculation been triggered, and when will it be credited?
  • What is my complaint number, and when should I expect the next update?

The safest expectation is therefore status-based: a failed transfer normally has a T+1 working-day outer limit, a failed merchant confirmation has T+5 working days, and a successful wrong-recipient payment has no guaranteed automatic refund period. Prompt reporting and complete transaction details give the bank the information needed to trace the payment.
