How Long Do Hard Inquiries Stay on Your Credit Report?

By TheFinanceBase Team 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hard inquiries generally stay on your credit report for about two years (24 months). A CFPB-hosted Credit Builders Alliance training slide says inquiries remain on consumer disclosure and business division reports for that period. The same material says inquiries made during the previous 12 months can affect a credit score, so an inquiry can remain visible after the scoring period described there has ended.

Those are separate timelines. The entry’s appearance on a report is not the same as its ability to influence a score. The exact effect depends on the scoring model and the rest of your credit file.

What a hard inquiry is

A credit inquiry is a request to examine a credit report for an eligibility purpose. A hard inquiry usually follows an application for new credit. Common examples include applications for a credit card, auto loan, mortgage, personal loan, or another consumer-loan product.

When you apply, the lender generally reviews your report to decide whether to extend credit and on what terms. That review is recorded as an inquiry. Most scoring models consider how recently and how frequently you have applied, which is why a hard inquiry can affect a score. The inquiry is only one item in a credit file; its effect is not a universal, fixed number of points.

The reporting and scoring rules described here come from a 2019 Credit Builders Alliance training presentation hosted by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Treat its scoring-window explanation as general guidance rather than a promise that every bureau or score model uses identical rules.

The two timelines you need to separate

Readers often ask one question when there are actually two: “How long can a lender see the inquiry?” and “How long can it affect my score?” The answers are related but not identical.

Question What the cited material says Practical meaning
How long does the entry remain visible? Hard inquiries appear on consumer disclosure and business division reports for 24 months. An inquiry can continue to appear when you review your report even after it no longer falls within the score-impact window described below.
How long can it affect a score? Hard inquiries initiated during the previous 12 months can impact the credit score. The score-related period is shorter in that presentation. The actual treatment can vary with the scoring model and the individual file.
Is there a guaranteed point loss? No universal point estimate is established. Do not assume that every application will lower every score by the same amount.

Think of the report entry as a record with a longer shelf life and the score effect as a separate, model-dependent calculation. Seeing an old inquiry does not by itself show that it is still lowering a score.

Hard inquiries versus soft inquiries

Not every credit-report access is a hard pull. The initiator, purpose, visibility, and scoring treatment determine which type you are looking at.

Inquiry type Typical initiator or purpose Visible to businesses that purchase a report? Can affect a score?
Hard inquiry A consumer’s application for a card, auto loan, mortgage, or other consumer credit. It is recorded on the report used in the credit process, including the report categories described by the Credit Builders Alliance presentation. It can affect a score; models consider recency and frequency of applications.
Soft inquiry Your own report request, an existing-account review, prescreening, or employment screening. No. CFPB says soft inquiries are visible only to you and not to businesses that purchase the report. No. CFPB says soft inquiries do not affect scores.

An existing lender may review your account through a soft inquiry for account management. A prescreened offer can also involve a soft inquiry. These events can appear in the consumer version of a report without being treated like a new application for scoring purposes.

How much can a hard inquiry lower your score?

The available sources do not support a single point-loss figure. The scoring effect depends on the model, the timing of the application, the number of recent applications, and the information already in your file. Someone with several recent applications may be evaluated differently from someone with one isolated inquiry.

That uncertainty is important when comparing a credit decision before and after an application. A score change could reflect several updates at once, such as a newly reported balance, a payment history update, or a change in account age. An inquiry may be part of the explanation, but the inquiry record alone does not establish the size or cause of every movement.

The 12-month statement in the cited presentation is a general explanation of potential score impact, not a guarantee for every score sold to every lender. Different lenders can use different scoring models and versions. If a lender gives you an adverse-action notice or other explanation, use that notice alongside the reports and scores you are comparing rather than assuming a fixed inquiry penalty.

What you will see on your report

Reports commonly identify the company that accessed the file and the date of the access. The wording and layout can differ among reporting companies, so compare the inquiry section with the account applications you remember making.

Details to check

  • Date: Does the date match an application you submitted?
  • Company name: Is the business one you authorized to review your report, or could it be a similarly named company?
  • Inquiry type: Is it listed in a section for hard inquiries, or is it a soft access shown only on your consumer disclosure?
  • Number of entries: Did one application produce more than one entry, or are there separate applications you had forgotten?
  • Report source: Are you looking at your consumer disclosure, a score-provider view, or a lender-provided report? Those versions may display information differently.

A hard inquiry you recognize is generally an accurate history item. An unfamiliar entry, a duplicate that does not correspond to your application, or an entry with an incorrect date deserves investigation before you conclude that fraud occurred.

How to check your reports without hurting your score

Checking your own report is a soft inquiry. CFPB says consumers can check their reports online for free weekly through the three nationwide reporting companies, and that requesting your own report does not affect your score. You do not need to apply for new credit to inspect the inquiry section.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use the official online report-access route for each of the three nationwide reporting companies.
  2. Request the consumer disclosure and save a copy or record the date you accessed it.
  3. Open the inquiries section and sort entries by date, if the site provides that option.
  4. Mark each entry as recognized, uncertain, or inaccurate. Keep notes about the lender, application date, and any confirmation email or application receipt.
  5. Repeat the review with the other reporting companies. An inquiry can appear on one report and not another because businesses do not always report to every company.

Weekly checking is useful when you are actively applying for credit or investigating an unfamiliar entry. It is also a way to separate a legitimate hard inquiry from harmless soft accesses that only appear in the consumer version.

How to dispute an inaccurate hard inquiry

The dispute process is for information that is wrong, not for removing an accurate application simply because you dislike its effect. CFPB recommends disputing inaccurate information with both the reporting company and the company that supplied the information, often called the furnisher.

  1. Collect evidence. Gather the report page showing the inquiry, identification details, application records, lender correspondence, and documents supporting your explanation. Send copies rather than irreplaceable originals.
  2. Describe the exact error. State whether you never applied, the date or company is wrong, the entry is duplicated, or another specific detail is inaccurate.
  3. Contact the reporting company. Follow its dispute instructions and include the report identifier, a concise explanation, and copies of supporting documents.
  4. Contact the furnisher. Send the same explanation to the company that supplied the inquiry information. Keeping both submissions consistent helps each party investigate the same issue.
  5. Keep a record. Save submissions, confirmation numbers, mailing receipts, and responses. Note when each dispute was sent and when a response arrived.
  6. Review the result. If the furnisher determines the information was wrong or cannot verify it, it must update or remove the entry and notify the reporting companies. Check the updated report to confirm the correction.

An accurate inquiry is not an error merely because it remains visible for the full reporting period. The evidence cited here does not support promising early deletion of an accurate hard inquiry.

What to do when you do not recognize an inquiry

An unfamiliar inquiry can have several explanations: a forgotten application, a lender using a different legal name, a co-applicant or authorized application, or an unauthorized attempt to obtain credit. Start by matching the date and company name against your records before disputing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If it matches an application

Record the application date and keep the entry in your records. It is part of your credit history, and the fact that it remains visible does not mean it will continue affecting a score throughout that period.

If it does not match anything

Contact the company listed on the report and ask why it accessed your file. Then dispute the entry with the reporting company and the furnisher, supplying documents that show why the access is inaccurate. If the inquiry is connected to an application you did not make, review the rest of the report for unfamiliar accounts or personal information and follow the reporting company’s identity-theft procedures.

Planning applications while inquiries are on your report

You cannot control every scoring-model rule, but you can make the application process easier to manage.

  • Check your reports first. Find errors before a lender reviews the file so you can dispute them with documentation.
  • Apply only when you have a defined need. A completed application for a card or loan can create a hard inquiry, unlike a self-check of your report.
  • Keep an application log. Record the date, lender, product, and result. This makes future report reviews much easier.
  • Ask what type of credit check is used. A lender can tell you whether a prequalification or account review uses a soft inquiry or whether a full application will create a hard one; do not assume based solely on marketing language.
  • Compare like with like. When watching a score, use the same scoring source and note the date. A score from one model is not directly interchangeable with a score from another.

These steps do not guarantee a particular score outcome. They reduce avoidable surprises and help you distinguish a legitimate application record from a reporting error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Examples of the timeline

Example: an application made recently

You apply for an auto loan and see a hard inquiry shortly afterward. The entry is within both the report-visibility period and the score-impact period described by the cited training material. A score model may consider it along with your other recent applications and file information.

Example: an older application

You review your report and find a mortgage inquiry from more than a year ago but less than two years ago. It may still be displayed on the report even though it is outside the 12-month score-impact window described in the presentation. Visibility alone does not prove that it is still lowering your score.

Example: checking your own file

You request your consumer disclosure to investigate the mortgage inquiry. That request is a soft inquiry and does not affect your score. It is a safe way to verify dates and identify errors.

Questions to ask before disputing or applying

  • Do I recognize the lender and date?
  • Am I viewing a consumer disclosure or a lender’s version of the report?
  • Is this entry categorized as hard or soft?
  • Can I document why the company, date, or application is wrong?
  • Have I sent the dispute to both the reporting company and the furnisher?
  • Am I treating a general scoring guideline as if it were a guarantee for my particular score model?

The key decision is whether the record is accurate. If it is accurate, monitor it and understand the separate reporting and scoring timelines. If it is inaccurate or cannot be verified, use the formal dispute process and retain your documentation.
