Direct lithium extraction (DLE) from geothermal brine combines two operations at one underground resource: hot brine is first used for geothermal energy, then lithium dissolved in that brine is selectively removed before the remaining fluid is sent back underground. The lithium is not pumped from the surface of California’s Salton Sea. It is dissolved in geothermal reservoir fluid circulating through fractured bedrock roughly a mile below ground, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
A typical process brings the fluid to the surface, removes heat, conditions the brine to reduce interfering minerals, captures lithium with a sorbent or resin-based system, converts the recovered lithium into a saleable compound, and reinjects the post-extraction brine. The exact equipment and chemistry vary by project, and pilot production should not be confused with proven, long-duration commercial operation.

Where the lithium is—and why geothermal brine is useful
The Salton Sea lithium resource is often misunderstood as lithium in lake water. DOE explains that the lithium of interest is dissolved in hot geothermal fluid held in deep rock formations, not in the lake’s surface water. Geothermal wells bring that fluid to the surface because it contains both heat and dissolved minerals. The resource description and DOE’s process overview are available in the Geothermal FAQs.
That combination creates a potential co-production model. A geothermal facility can use the brine’s heat to generate electricity, then send the cooled or partially cooled fluid through a lithium-recovery circuit. After lithium removal, the remaining brine can be returned to the reservoir. This differs from an open-pit mine or an evaporation pond: the target metal is dissolved in a circulating fluid, and the process is designed around pumping, chemical separation and reinjection.

“Direct lithium extraction” is a family of process designs rather than one standardized machine. Projects can differ in their pretreatment chemistry, capture material, regeneration method, product-conversion step, water balance and reinjection arrangement. Therefore, a result from one pilot cannot automatically be applied to every geothermal brine.
The geothermal-brine lithium process, step by step
1. Pump hot reservoir fluid to the surface
Production wells move geothermal brine from the deep reservoir to surface equipment. At the Salton Sea resource area, DOE describes the lithium-bearing fluid as being distributed through bedrock approximately a mile below the surface. The fluid’s composition depends on the particular reservoir and can include high concentrations of salts and other dissolved minerals that complicate lithium separation.
The first surface objective is usually energy recovery. The hot fluid may pass through a geothermal power system in which heat is transferred to a turbine cycle. A California Energy Commission (CEC) description of the configuration places heat removal and electricity generation before the lithium-extraction stage. Read the agency’s project summary at Pilot Scale Recovery of Lithium from Geothermal Brines.

2. Remove heat for power generation
Geothermal operations extract useful heat while keeping the brine in a closed industrial circuit. Once heat has been removed, the brine can be at a temperature and pressure more suitable for downstream treatment. The precise temperature, pressure and flow conditions are project-specific; the available sources do not establish one universal operating window.
Using the heat first can improve resource utilization because the same produced fluid supplies geothermal energy and lithium feedstock. It does not mean that every geothermal plant is already equipped for lithium recovery. Lithium separation requires additional pumps, vessels, chemical-treatment systems, capture media and product-processing equipment.
3. Condition the brine before lithium capture
Raw geothermal brine can contain silica, iron, calcium and other dissolved or suspended constituents that foul equipment or compete with lithium for binding sites. Pretreatment removes some of those interferents before the selective-recovery step.

DOE gives an example in which limestone is added so that silica and iron react and form solids that can settle out. A California environmental notice for a separate demonstration describes calcium hydroxide pretreatment before a resin extraction step. These are examples of possible flowsheets, not a mandatory recipe for every facility. The project notice is available at Salton Sea Geothermal Lithium Recovery Demonstration Project.
Pretreatment can involve chemical addition, clarification, filtration or other solids-management operations. Its design must match the brine chemistry and the capture material. Removing too little of an interfering mineral can shorten sorbent life or reduce recovery; removing too much can increase reagent use, waste handling and operating cost.
4. Selectively capture dissolved lithium
After conditioning, the brine enters a lithium-selective recovery unit. In an adsorption design, solid beads containing materials such as aluminum oxide or titanium oxide provide binding sites that preferentially hold lithium ions. Brine contacts the beads, lithium is retained, and most of the carrier solution exits with reduced lithium concentration.
DOE’s overview also identifies electrochemical treatment, electrodialysis and membrane or filter systems as components that may appear in a DLE circuit. A resin-based ion-exchange approach uses resin beads engineered to exchange or bind lithium under defined chemical conditions. The California demonstration notice describes lithium-selective resin beads on a side stream of geothermal brine.
Selective does not mean perfectly selective. Other ions and contaminants can affect loading, regeneration and product purity. The capture material, contact time, pressure drop, pH and brine temperature all influence performance. A process must be designed around the actual fluid rather than a generic lithium solution.
5. Regenerate the capture material
Once the adsorbent or resin has loaded lithium, the material is treated so lithium leaves the solid phase and enters a smaller, more concentrated solution. DOE describes washing the beads and preparing them for reuse. In practice, regeneration creates a lithium-rich stream and a regenerated capture medium that returns to service.

Durability is a major engineering issue. The 2024 CEC pilot report says sorbent replacement is a significant operating cost and recommends additional work to extend sorbent lifetime. A material that performs well for a short campaign may be uneconomic if it loses capacity, becomes fouled or requires frequent replacement during continuous operation. The full report is published as a PDF at Pilot Scale Recovery of Lithium from Geothermal Brines Final Project Report.
6. Convert the recovered stream into a lithium product
The concentrated lithium solution is processed into a product suitable for its intended market. The CEC pilot report documents direct production of lithium carbonate from synthetic brine. Other designs target lithium hydroxide; DOE’s ATLiS project page describes a proposed Imperial County facility with that product objective.
Carbonate and hydroxide are different chemical products with different downstream uses and specifications. Product conversion can involve purification, pH adjustment, precipitation, filtration, drying or additional polishing. The sources establish examples of target products but do not establish one universally preferred product route.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors7. Return the remaining brine to the reservoir
After lithium and selected impurities are removed, the residual brine is routed back into the geothermal system. DOE describes reinjection into the reservoir. In the 2020 California demonstration notice, post-extraction streams were returned to the facility’s existing brine-processing system for the test.
Reinjection helps maintain a circulating geothermal fluid system and avoids treating the process as a one-way discharge. It does not by itself resolve every environmental question. Operators still have to manage chemicals, solids, scaling, corrosion, well integrity, induced-pressure effects and monitoring requirements under applicable permits.
How DLE approaches differ
The useful comparison is not simply “one DLE machine versus another.” It is the capture mechanism, the pretreatment required for a particular brine, the regeneration and product-recovery sequence, and the evidence available at the project’s current stage.

| Approach or component | How lithium is handled | What the cited projects establish | What remains project-specific |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adsorbent beads | Lithium binds to a solid material, such as an aluminum- or titanium-oxide-based bead; washing releases a concentrated lithium stream. | DOE describes this as an example of selective adsorption and bead reuse. | Capacity, selectivity, regeneration chemistry, cycle life and commercial cost. |

| Electrochemical treatment | An electrochemical system drives or assists ion separation. | DOE lists electrochemical treatment as a possible part of a DLE recovery circuit. | Equipment configuration, electricity demand, selectivity and field-scale operating history. |
| Electrodialysis or membranes | Electrical or pressure-driven separation moves ions through selective barriers or filters. | DOE identifies electrodialysis and membrane or filter steps among possible circuit elements. | Membrane life, fouling control, energy use, pretreatment and achievable product concentration. |
These categories can be combined. For example, a plant might pretreat brine chemically, use a resin or adsorbent for primary lithium capture, then apply filtration or membrane polishing before product conversion. The available evidence does not support ranking one approach as universally superior.

Pilot work with synthetic brine
The CEC’s 2024 pilot report documents operation of a DLE skid using synthetic brine and production of lithium carbonate. That is useful evidence that the equipment and chemistry can be integrated under pilot conditions. It is not proof of sustained commercial operation on naturally variable geothermal brine.
The same report identifies extended operation at an actual geothermal site as a needed next step, particularly to evaluate materials and components under field conditions. Its warning about sorbent lifetime matters because replacement frequency directly affects both operating expense and waste management.
A geothermal side-stream demonstration
The California environmental notice describes a demonstration using pretreatment and lithium-selective resin beads on a side stream of geothermal brine, with post-extraction streams routed back to the existing processing system. That establishes a pilot configuration and its handling plan; it does not establish long-run commercial performance, plant-wide recovery or a guaranteed production rate.
A proposed Imperial County project
DOE’s Loan Programs Office announced a conditional commitment for Project ATLiS, a proposed Imperial County project intended to use DLE and produce lithium hydroxide. The announcement says the financing commitment was conditional on technical, legal, environmental and financial requirements being satisfied before definitive documents and funding. It should therefore be described as a proposed project with conditional financing, not as an operating commercial facility. The announcement is at LPO Announces Conditional Commitment for Project ATLiS for Lithium Hydroxide Production in California.

Water use: an important comparison with a major qualification
A DOE lithium page reports that a DOE-funded Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory resource assessment found DLE requires 99% less water per ton of lithium than other lithium-mining processes. That is an agency-reported comparative figure from the DOE page, updated September 28, 2026; it should not be treated as a measured universal rate for every DLE plant. The comparison appears at DOE’s Lithium page.

DOE’s geothermal FAQ supplies the necessary limitation: commercial-scale DLE water consumption remains difficult to estimate because process designs and operating data are not yet sufficient. DOE says demonstration facilities need transparent, ongoing reporting before the water implications of large-scale deployment can be understood. In other words, the 99% figure describes a reported comparison, while actual water demand still depends on the full process train, including pretreatment, regeneration, cooling, solids handling and product conversion.
DOE also reports that geothermal power plants in the Salton Sea region use about 16 acre-feet of water per year per megawatt of capacity. That figure applies to geothermal power plants, not to a complete commercial DLE water-use estimate. The same FAQ states that those facilities do not use water from the Salton Sea itself or affect the lake’s level through their operations.
What can make the process difficult?
- Brine chemistry: High concentrations of competing ions, silica or iron can reduce selectivity, increase scaling and make pretreatment more demanding.
- Capture-material durability: Sorbent or resin capacity can decline through fouling, chemical attack or mechanical wear. Replacement cost is a documented concern in the CEC pilot report.
- Corrosion and scaling: Hot, saline fluids can damage pumps, pipes, heat exchangers and separation vessels unless materials and operating conditions are carefully selected.
- Product purity: Battery or chemical customers require controlled specifications. Removing lithium from brine is only one part of producing a consistent carbonate or hydroxide product.
- Integration with geothermal operations: Lithium recovery must fit the power cycle, pressure management, reinjection wells and existing brine-processing equipment without undermining electricity production.
- Evidence duration: A short pilot run may not reveal seasonal changes, well decline, fouling, sorbent aging or maintenance requirements that appear during continuous operation.
How to interpret claims about a geothermal-lithium project
For anyone evaluating a company announcement, public financing, permitting document or investment thesis, separate the project’s evidence into distinct questions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- What fluid was tested? Synthetic brine, a laboratory solution, a geothermal side stream and full-scale production brine are not equivalent.
- What was the operating duration? Ask whether the result came from a brief campaign, an extended pilot or sustained commercial operation.
- What product was made? Lithium capture, concentrated eluate, lithium carbonate and battery-grade lithium hydroxide represent different completion points.
- How was the material regenerated? Regeneration chemistry, energy use, water demand and cycle life can determine operating economics.
- What happened to the remaining brine? Reinjection plans, monitoring, permits and chemical-residual controls should be identified rather than assumed.
- Which numbers are measured? Recovery percentage, water use, energy consumption and replacement intervals should be tied to a defined test condition and date.
This framework prevents a pilot result from being presented as a guaranteed production rate or a conditional financing announcement from being presented as an operating plant.
Why reinjection matters, and what it does not prove
Returning post-extraction brine underground is central to the geothermal cycle described by DOE and the CEC. It can reduce the need for surface disposal and help preserve reservoir pressure when wells and permits are properly managed. However, reinjection is an operating strategy, not a blanket certification that environmental impacts are settled.
Environmental performance depends on the complete system: well construction, chemical inventories, accidental-release controls, solids disposal, groundwater protection, seismic monitoring and the chemistry of the reinjected stream. Public permitting documents and long-term operating reports are needed to assess those issues for a specific facility.
The practical bottom line
Geothermal-brine lithium extraction works by adding a selective mineral-separation process to a geothermal fluid loop. Wells produce hot lithium-bearing brine; heat is removed for power; pretreatment reduces interfering minerals; a sorbent, resin or another separation technology captures lithium; regeneration and chemical processing produce carbonate, hydroxide or another lithium compound; and the remaining brine is reinjected.
