How inflation affects your super balance and retirement income

Inflation reduces what each dollar can buy. Your super balance can therefore rise in dollar terms while losing purchasing power if its investment return does not keep pace with rising prices. The retirement-income question is not simply “How large is my balance?” but “What will that balance buy, after inflation, fees, contributions, market movements and the timing of withdrawals?”

In Australia, super is only one part of retirement funding. The Age Pension, employment income, personal savings and investments, and home equity may also contribute. A useful plan expresses spending and income in consistent terms—preferably today’s dollars for purchasing-power comparisons—and treats every projection as an estimate rather than a promise.

Nominal dollars and real purchasing power are different

A nominal balance is the number shown on your super statement. Its real value is the amount of goods and services that balance can buy. If prices rise while your balance stays unchanged, your purchasing power falls. Even a positive investment return may not protect you if inflation is higher than that return over the same period.

For example, imagine a balance that remains at the same dollar amount while groceries, utilities, transport and healthcare become more expensive. The statement still shows the original number, but the retirement lifestyle that number can fund has become smaller. If the balance increases, the outcome depends on how quickly it grows compared with prices. This is a way to understand the mechanics, not a forecast for any particular fund or year.

The relevant return for spending decisions is the return after inflation. A simple conceptual relationship is:

real return ≈ nominal investment return − inflation

The approximation is useful for intuition; actual outcomes also reflect compounding, fees, taxes, contributions, withdrawals and the order in which market returns occur. The Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation (CSC) cautions that inflation can exceed investment return over shorter periods, so a single good or bad year does not establish a lasting result.

What the CPI tells you—and what it does not

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is Australia’s broad measure of price change. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) defines its purpose this way: “The CPI is a current social and economic indicator that is constructed to measure changes over time in the general level of prices of consumer goods and services that households acquire, use or pay for consumption.”

CPI is built from a representative basket. Your personal inflation experience can differ because your spending mix is different. A retiree who owns a home, rents, pays for substantial medical care, travels frequently or spends heavily on energy will not have exactly the same cost pattern as the basket average. The ABS also publishes living-cost indexes for household groups, including self-funded retiree households. Those indexes can provide another lens, but they still do not measure an individual’s circumstances exactly.

When reading a projection, identify which inflation measure it uses and whether the result is shown in future dollars or adjusted to today’s dollars. ASIC’s Regulatory Guide 276 says consumer-price inflation is a better deflator than wage inflation for helping users compare the purchasing power of retirement income through time. That distinction matters: wages and prices can move differently, and using a wage measure can make an income stream look more or less adequate than it is for household spending.

How inflation changes the income your super can provide

Retirement income is usually drawn over many years, so inflation affects both the first year’s spending target and the amount needed later. A fixed annual withdrawal buys less if prices rise. An income stream that increases over time may preserve purchasing power more effectively, but increases can also require a larger starting balance or a different investment and withdrawal approach.

  • Investment returns: returns can be above or below inflation in any period, and past performance is not a guarantee.
  • Fees and costs: every fee reduces the amount compounded for your benefit.
  • Contributions: employer and personal contributions can increase the balance before retirement, subject to the applicable rules and your circumstances.
  • Withdrawals and timing: taking money during a market decline can leave fewer assets to participate in a later recovery.
  • Spending changes: housing, health, travel and family support costs can change, as can your desired lifestyle.
  • Other income: Age Pension eligibility, employment, investments and home equity alter how much your super must supply.

A projection should state these assumptions. A large future-dollar balance can sound reassuring while representing a modest amount in today’s purchasing power; conversely, a smaller figure expressed in today’s dollars may be easier to interpret for budgeting.

Super is one part of an Australian retirement-income plan

Moneysmart identifies several potential retirement-income sources. Looking at them together is more informative than judging readiness from super alone.

Potential source How it fits into planning
Superannuation May provide account-based withdrawals or other retirement income, depending on the product, balance and strategy.
Age Pension Eligibility and payment levels depend on government rules and your circumstances; include only an estimate that matches the assumptions used.
Work Part-time or continued work can reduce the amount needed from investments and may change the timing of retirement.
Personal savings and investments Bank savings, shares, managed investments and other assets can supplement super and may have different risks, fees and tax treatment.
Home equity Your home may affect housing costs or become a source of funds, but the way it is used has financial, practical and personal consequences.

Because these sources interact, two people with the same super balance can have very different retirement prospects. Housing status, debt, health, dependants, spending and eligibility for government payments all matter.

What the published super benchmarks mean

Moneysmart reported these figures from the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia’s Retirement Standard, accessed in September 2026.

ASFA estimate reported by Moneysmart Amount How to interpret it
Single person, age 67, comfortable retirement $630,000 A benchmark based on the standard’s assumptions, including the specified home-ownership context; not a personalised target or guarantee.
Single person, age 67, modest retirement $110,000 A benchmark for a lower spending standard under the standard’s assumptions; not an inflation-proof amount.

These are starting points, not universal thresholds. Moneysmart explicitly says there is no single balance that is right for everyone. The figures do not automatically adjust for your rent or mortgage, health costs, family commitments, travel, other assets, expected Age Pension or the date you actually retire. A benchmark can help frame a conversation, but it cannot replace a cash-flow estimate built around your life.

How to plan in today’s dollars

Use a consistent process so inflation is not hidden by presentation.

  1. Define the lifestyle: list essential and discretionary spending, housing costs, insurance, transport, healthcare, family assistance and one-off expenses. Separate costs that may rise differently.
  2. List every income source: record super, likely government payments, work, investments, savings and any plan for home equity. Note which amounts are uncertain.
  3. Choose the dollar basis: ask whether each figure is a future nominal amount or an inflation-adjusted amount in today’s dollars. Do not compare one basis with the other.
  4. Check the assumptions: identify the inflation rate, investment-return approach, fees, contributions, retirement date, withdrawal pattern, tax treatment and market scenarios used by the calculator or adviser.
  5. Run sensitivities: test higher and lower inflation, different retirement dates, fee levels, investment options, contribution rates and spending paths. Moneysmart’s retirement-planning tools are designed to help users examine these variables.
  6. Review regularly: update spending, balances, fees, legislation, expected income and market conditions. A projection is a planning aid, not a fixed outcome.

When a calculator shows income, read the explanatory notes as carefully as the headline number. A result can change materially if it includes or excludes the Age Pension, assumes home ownership, uses a particular fee, or expresses income in future rather than current dollars.

Comparison point Question to ask Why it matters
Dollar basis Are amounts nominal future dollars or inflation-adjusted today’s dollars? A larger future number may have less purchasing power than a smaller real-dollar figure.
Inflation and returns What inflation and investment-return assumptions are used, and are they estimates or guarantees? The gap between returns and inflation drives real growth.
Fees and contributions Are administration, investment and advice fees included? Are employer and personal contributions modelled? Costs reduce compounding; contributions change the amount available.
Income sources Does the result include Age Pension eligibility, other investments, work income or home equity? Super may need to fund only part of total spending.
Spending and housing What lifestyle, rent or mortgage, and home-ownership assumptions are used? Required income varies sharply with housing and spending needs.

Practical ways to respond to inflation risk

Inflation management is a continuing planning task rather than a one-time product choice. Before retirement, review whether your contributions and investment option remain suitable for your time horizon and risk tolerance, and check the fees you are paying. Near and after retirement, maintain a realistic spending plan, keep enough accessible cash for near-term needs according to your strategy, and revisit the mix of essential and discretionary spending when prices change.

Do not assume that a particular asset, fund or return will always beat inflation. Markets vary, and taking more investment risk can increase both potential gains and losses. The useful question is whether the overall plan remains workable under several plausible combinations of inflation, returns, fees and spending—not whether one year’s return exceeded CPI.

CSC Chief Investment Officer Alison Tarditi describes CSC’s own approach in these terms: “We deliver dependable, long-term gains in purchasing power—your savings have grown faster than inflation— providing a surer path to maintaining a comfortable retirement-living standard … because your superannuation is more than just a mandatory savings account or a paper gain or loss at any point in time. It is the promise of dependable income to your future retired self – so you can live the way you want, not just the way you need.” This is CSC’s statement about its approach and results, not a universal guarantee for every super fund, investment option or period.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Treating the statement balance as spending power: translate it into today’s dollars and consider the years until retirement.
  • Using a benchmark as a personal target: replace the benchmark with a budget that reflects your housing and lifestyle.
  • Ignoring fees: include all stated costs in the projection and check whether they are dollar amounts, percentages or both.
  • Comparing unlike projections: align the dollar basis, inflation, returns, contributions, income sources and spending assumptions.
  • Assuming CPI equals personal inflation: examine your own spending mix and, where useful, the ABS household-group living-cost indexes.
  • Reading an estimate as a promise: record the date and assumptions, then rerun the plan as circumstances change.
  • Focusing only on super: include the Age Pension, work, savings, investments and home equity where relevant.

When personalised advice can help

General information cannot determine how much you personally need or which strategy is appropriate. Moneysmart says personalised financial advice may help people apply assumptions to their own circumstances and notes that many super funds provide advice. Consider qualified advice if your situation involves complex tax or pension eligibility, multiple accounts, a major change in retirement timing, significant debt, dependants, a business or a decision about using home equity.

Before acting on advice, ask what assumptions are being used, how fees are charged, what services are included and how often the plan will be reviewed. Keep a written record of whether projections are in today’s dollars, what inflation and return assumptions were used, and which income sources were counted.

What you can conclude about your own balance

Inflation does not make a particular super balance automatically adequate or inadequate. It changes the purchasing power that balance represents. A sound assessment therefore starts with the lifestyle you want, converts income and spending to the same dollar basis, includes every likely income source, and tests the plan against changing inflation, returns, fees and timing. Use the ASFA figures as dated benchmarks, not promises, and revisit the calculation as your circumstances and official rules change.
