GPF interest is time-weighted. Your opening balance does not earn interest for exactly the same period as money deposited or withdrawn during the financial year. Under central General Provident Fund (GPF) Rule 11, the opening balance, after accounting for the year’s withdrawals, is credited with a full year’s interest; each withdrawal earns interest only through the last day of the month before the withdrawal; and each new credit earns interest from its deemed deposit date through the end of the year.
The exact result depends on the subscriber’s governing scheme, the applicable financial-year rate, transaction dates and required rounding. Central rules and state-specific schemes do not always use the same monthly convention, so identify the applicable rules before applying a formula.

What the calculation is actually measuring
GPF interest is an annual credit on money that is treated as being in the account during the financial year, normally April through March. Because contributions and withdrawals can occur at different times, the account is divided conceptually into amounts with different earning periods.

- A contribution made or recovered during the year earns interest only from its deemed deposit date.
- A withdrawal stops reducing the interest-bearing balance according to the scheme’s withdrawal-timing rule.
- The final amount is rounded as required by the applicable rules, and ledger adjustments may also be included.
For central GPF accounts, Rule 11 states that the opening balance, less the amount withdrawn during the year, is credited with twelve months’ interest. A current-year withdrawal receives interest only up to the last day of the month preceding the month of withdrawal. A current-year credit receives interest from its deemed deposit date to year-end.

First establish which GPF rules apply
Do not assume that a central-government formula applies to every GPF subscriber. The General Provident Fund (Central Services) Rules, 1960, Rule 11 are the primary reference for central GPF mechanics. State schemes can specify different monthly-balance or transaction-date conventions.
For example, a Gujarat Accountant General FAQ says interest is calculated from the succeeding month of subscription and credited at the end of the financial year. That is a jurisdiction-specific statement, not a universal GPF rule. A Haryana rule result describes a monthly balance using the opening balance, deposits up to the 10th and withdrawals during the month. Those examples show why a state subscriber should confirm the rule with the accounts office before using a central-rule calculation.

- Every current-year subscription, arrear, adjustment or other credit, with the date or month used by the scheme.
- Every withdrawal, including the month in which it was paid or debited.
- The official interest rate applicable to the relevant financial year or quarter.

Central Rule 11: deemed dates for contributions
The central rule does not necessarily use the day on which money appears in a ledger. It assigns a deemed deposit date. Rule 11(3) says: “the date of deposit shall in the case of recoveries from emoluments be deemed to be the first day of the month in which it is recovered”. In practical terms, a payroll deduction recovered in a month is treated as deposited on the first day of that month for the central calculation.
Money sent directly by a subscriber follows a separate cutoff. If the remittance is received before the fifth day of a month, the deemed deposit date is the first day of that month. If it is received on or after the fifth day, the deemed deposit date is the first day of the following month. A late subscription recovery caused by delayed salary or leave salary can have a special timing treatment under the rule, so it should not automatically be treated like an ordinary on-time payroll deduction.
| Transaction | Central-rule timing described in Rule 11 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Payroll recovery from emoluments | First day of the month in which it is recovered | The amount is treated as present for that month’s interest period. |
| Direct remittance received before the fifth day | First day of the month of receipt | That month can count under the deemed-date method. |
| Direct remittance received on or after the fifth day | First day of the following month | The receipt month is not treated as the deposit month under this rule. |
| Delayed recovery linked to delayed salary or leave salary | Special provision in Rule 11 | Use the rule and the accounts office’s treatment rather than guessing. |
How to calculate interest step by step
- Identify the financial year and rate. Use the official notification for that year and, where applicable, quarter. The Department of Economic Affairs index lists a GPF and similar-funds notice dated 5 October 2026 for Q3 of financial year 2026–27, but the numeric rate is not established here. Do not substitute an old FAQ rate or a worked-example rate for the current notification.
- Bring forward the previous year-end balance. This is the opening balance before current-year transactions and adjustments.
- List each credit with its deemed month or date. Include regular subscriptions, arrears and other credits that the governing rules treat as interest-bearing.
- List each withdrawal with its applicable ending month. Under central Rule 11, interest on a current-year withdrawal runs only through the last day of the preceding month.
- Apply the rule’s period to each amount. You can calculate each component separately or use an official month-factor table where one exists.
- Add adjustments required by the ledger. Annual closing can include prior-year credit or debit adjustments in addition to visible current-year transactions.
- Round the final interest. Under the central rule, the total is rounded to the nearest whole rupee, with 50 paise counted as the next higher rupee.
As a simplified arithmetic aid, an amount earning for a whole number of months can be estimated as:

When regular contributions start during the year
A recurring contribution that begins later earns fewer months of interest than the same contribution made from the beginning of the financial year. In a month-factor approach, each payment is assigned the number of months it remains in the account, and those month counts are added.
Illustrative recurring-contribution example
The Accountant General (A&E), Maharashtra, Nagpur publishes a worked example in which a regular contribution of Rs. 20 begins in May. Its table gives a factor of 66. The factor represents the summed monthly exposure under that table’s approach. At the page’s illustrative 4% rate:
Rs. 20 × 66 × 4% ÷ 12 = Rs. 4.40
The example rounds Rs. 4.40 to Rs. 4 under the stated worked-example method. The 4% figure is historical and illustrative; it is not a current GPF rate. The table is a calculation aid tied to the Maharashtra page’s stated approach, not a universal factor for every scheme.

When a single deposit is made during the year
A one-time deposit is not treated like a full year’s opening balance. Its interest period begins at the deemed deposit month or date specified by the rules.
The Maharashtra worked example uses a single Rs. 20 deposit in October. Its table assigns a six-month factor-weighted amount of Rs. 120. At the illustrative 4% rate:
Rs. 120 × 4% ÷ 12 = Rs. 0.40
The example therefore produces Rs. 0.40 before nearest-rupee rounding. This illustrates why a late-year deposit can produce little interest in its first year even when the annual rate appears substantial. The example’s month count and rate belong to that published method and should not be mixed with a different state’s convention.
When a withdrawal occurs during the year
A withdrawal affects interest in two linked ways: it removes principal from the balance that can continue earning interest, and the withdrawn amount has an interest period that ends under the applicable withdrawal rule.
Under central Rule 11, a current-year withdrawal receives interest through the last day of the month before the withdrawal month. A withdrawal made in October therefore receives interest only through the end of September under that rule. The amount withdrawn no longer remains in the account for interest after the applicable cutoff.
Central-rule illustration
Suppose an account has an opening balance and a withdrawal in October. The opening-balance component is adjusted for the year’s withdrawal, while the withdrawn amount is credited only for the permitted months before October. The remaining balance earns interest after the withdrawal only to the extent it stays in the account. The exact rupee result requires the opening balance, withdrawal amount, rate and any other transactions.

Do not mix withdrawal conventions
The Maharashtra page’s single-transaction guidance uses a month count that includes the transaction month in its illustrative approach, while central Rule 11 ends interest on a current-year withdrawal at the preceding month’s end. These are not interchangeable formulas. If your account is under a state scheme, follow that scheme’s written timing rule even when a central example appears easier to use.
Why the final ledger can differ from a simple monthly sum
The CAG Manual of the Provident Fund Department describes annual closing as a combination of:
- interest on the opening balance;
- interest on current-year deposits computed on a monthly-average basis;
- prior-year credit adjustments;
- a deduction for interest on withdrawals during the year; and
- prior-year debit adjustments.
This explains why a subscriber’s own list of monthly deductions may not reproduce the final ledger exactly. An arrear, correction, transfer, delayed posting or prior-year adjustment can change the closing calculation. Use the ledger and the accounts office’s reconciliation when the difference is material.
Comparing two contribution or withdrawal patterns
To compare scenarios, hold the rate and opening balance constant and compare the timing assigned to each transaction. The useful comparison is not merely “how much was contributed,” but how long each amount was treated as part of the interest-bearing balance.
| Comparison question | What to check |
|---|---|
| When did money enter? | The deemed deposit month or date under the governing rule. |
| How long did it earn? | The number of eligible months through year-end. |
| When did money leave? | The withdrawal month and the rule’s interest cutoff. |
| Which rate applies? | The official rate for the relevant financial year or quarter. |
| Could the ledger change the result? | Rounding, prior-year adjustments and corrections. |
For example, starting a fixed subscription in July instead of April reduces the number of earning months for every later contribution. Stopping in December instead of March removes the January-through-March contributions and their associated interest. With a withdrawal, compare both the principal removed and the earlier cutoff applied to that amount.
Rates: use the notification for the right period
GPF rates are updated through official notifications. A historical rate displayed on an FAQ or used in a worked example is not evidence of the current rate. The Gujarat FAQ displays 7.1% for April through June 2020; that figure belongs to that historical period and must not be presented as a current rate.

The Department of Economic Affairs index lists a notice dated 5 October 2026 for Q3 of financial year 2026–27. Because the numeric contents of that notice are not established here, a current percentage should be taken directly from the official notification before calculating a current account. If the rate changes by quarter or another prescribed period, apply the rate to the period for which it is notified rather than using one percentage for the entire year.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using the year’s total contributions as if they were present all year
Correct this by assigning every contribution its deemed deposit month or date. A May contribution cannot receive the same period as an April opening balance unless the governing rule expressly says so.
Counting a withdrawal through year-end
Under central Rule 11, a current-year withdrawal is credited interest only through the preceding month. Check the state rule before applying that cutoff elsewhere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUsing a historical percentage
Replace old FAQ and example rates with the official notification for the relevant year and quarter. Label any illustrative calculation clearly as illustrative.
Ignoring the fifth-day cutoff for direct remittances
For a central account, determine whether the money was received before the fifth day. Receipt on or after the fifth day is deemed deposited on the first day of the following month.
Mixing central and state methods
Do not combine a central withdrawal rule with a state month-factor table. Establish the scheme first, then use one internally consistent method.
Rounding every component prematurely
Keep sufficient precision while calculating and apply the required final rounding. Central Rule 11 rounds the total to the nearest rupee, treating 50 paise as the next higher rupee.
A practical reconciliation checklist
- Write down the scheme and the applicable rule.
- Record the previous year-end balance exactly as shown in the ledger.
- Mark each credit with its deemed month or date, not merely its payroll month.
- Mark each withdrawal and apply the rule’s interest-ending month.
- Insert the officially notified rate for the relevant period.
- Calculate separate interest components or use the scheme’s official table.
- Add known prior-year credits, debits and corrections.
- Apply the prescribed rounding to the total.
- Compare the result with the annual statement and ask the accounts office to explain any unexplained adjustment.
Bottom line for a changing-year account
Starting, stopping or changing a GPF contribution changes the number of months that each payment earns interest. A withdrawal changes both the principal left in the account and the period for which the withdrawn amount is credited. Central Rule 11 provides specific deemed dates and a preceding-month cutoff for current-year withdrawals, but state schemes can present the calculation differently. Use the governing rule, the current official rate notification and the ledger’s adjustments together; a generic percentage-times-balance calculation is not sufficient.
