Federal Reserve rate hikes can put downward pressure on Bitcoin by increasing discount rates, tightening liquidity and making safer assets relatively more attractive. The effect is not mechanical: Bitcoin may move before the decision, react little to an expected increase, or rise if a hike is interpreted as the end of tightening or is overwhelmed by crypto-specific demand.
The most useful way to analyze a meeting is to separate the expected policy move from the surprise, then track Treasury yields, the dollar, broader risk appetite, leverage and Bitcoin-specific news. A rate hike raises the federal-funds target range, or communicates that a higher path for future rates is likely. Financial markets do not wait for the formal announcement: Treasury yields, the dollar, equities and digital assets continuously adjust as traders revise their expectations.

If investors had already priced the move, the announcement itself may cause little immediate selling. A new projection for future rates, a change in language about inflation, or guidance about the balance sheet can still create a large move even when the current hike was fully anticipated.

The main channels from Fed policy to Bitcoin
Higher discount rates
Investors value uncertain future payoffs by discounting them back to the present. Higher expected short-term and real interest rates increase that discount rate. Bitcoin does not pay contractual interest or dividends, so its valuation is transmitted through the price investors are willing to pay for a scarce and volatile asset. When the opportunity cost of holding cash or interest-bearing securities rises, the amount some investors will pay for Bitcoin can fall.
Liquidity and portfolio allocation
Tighter policy can drain liquidity from financial markets and make cash or short-duration assets more competitive with speculative positions. Funds that were willing to hold volatile assets when financing was cheap may reduce exposure as yields rise or as risk limits tighten. Expectations and surprises
A fully anticipated hike can produce a muted reaction. A larger-than-expected increase, or guidance that rates will remain high for longer, is a different shock. Conversely, a hike accompanied by language suggesting that the tightening cycle is nearly complete can be interpreted as less restrictive than the headline number implies.

The dollar and Treasury yields
Tightening often supports the dollar and lifts Treasury yields, particularly at the short and intermediate maturities. Because Bitcoin is generally quoted in dollars, a stronger dollar can weigh on its dollar price and reduce global risk appetite. These relationships are tendencies, not fixed laws: a falling dollar, easing financial conditions elsewhere or strong Bitcoin demand can offset the conventional rate channel.

Leverage, collateral and liquidations
Rate-sensitive selling becomes more disruptive when traders are leveraged. A Bitcoin decline reduces the value of collateral posted against loans or derivatives. Creditors and exchanges can liquidate positions, creating additional market orders and amplifying the initial move. A 2024 New York Fed review identifies valuation pressure, funding risk, leverage and interconnectedness as four digital-asset vulnerabilities. Those conditions help explain why a modest macro shock can produce an unusually sharp intraday decline.
Does Bitcoin always fall when the Fed raises rates?
No. The evidence is period-dependent, and the immediate move reflects the surprise relative to expectations, forward guidance and the market’s broader risk regime. Bitcoin can fall on a hike, remain range-bound, or rise if other forces dominate.
- Expected increase: Much of the adjustment may occur before the meeting, leaving little reaction at the announcement.
- Hawkish surprise: A larger move or a higher-for-longer signal can raise yields and the dollar, pressure risk assets and trigger deleveraging.
- Dovish interpretation: If officials signal that the cycle is close to its endpoint, traders may treat the decision as less restrictive than feared.
- Bitcoin-specific demand: New buying, a supply change, a market-structure event or a crypto regulatory development can outweigh macro pressure.
- Positioning and short covering: If traders were heavily short going into the decision, a relief rally can follow even when rates rise.
Why an expected hike can still move the price
“Priced in” does not mean “nothing can happen.” Markets price a distribution of outcomes, and the statement can change that distribution. Investors may revise expectations for the next several meetings, the pace of balance-sheet reduction, inflation, growth or the dollar. Even a decision that matches the consensus forecast can alter real Treasury yields or equity volatility.

What empirical studies have found
Evidence of an earlier macro disconnect
A February 2023 Federal Reserve Bank of New York staff report, The Bitcoin–Macro Disconnect, states: “The key result is that, unlike other U.S. asset classes, Bitcoin is orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news.” That conclusion comes from the report’s event-study sample. It should not be generalized automatically to every later period or every type of policy announcement.
A more visible response after 2020
A 2023 study in the Journal of International Money and Finance reports that Bitcoin historically did not react immediately to monetary-policy news, but that “Since after 2020, Bitcoin prices fall immediately after a Fed tightening.” The result suggests that Bitcoin traded more like other risky assets in the post-2020 period. It is a historical estimate, not a promise that every post-2020 meeting will produce a decline.
An event-window estimate, not a rule of thumb
A 2022 study in Research in International Business and Finance estimates that an unexpected one-basis-point tightening in the two-year Treasury yield was associated with about a 0.25% Bitcoin price drop on the FOMC day. The authors also report effects that persisted over subsequent days and stronger impacts in high-return quantiles. The estimate applies to a defined, unexpected change in a specific Treasury yield and a specified event window; it is not a forecast that a 25-basis-point Fed hike automatically means a 6.25% Bitcoin loss.
Nonlinear spillovers
A 2022 Empirical Economics article using observations from January 2015 through February 2021 reports nonlinear effects and temporarily strong spillovers from Federal Funds rates to Bitcoin. “Nonlinear” means the response can differ in calm and stressed markets or at different points in the Bitcoin-return distribution. It is another reason to avoid multiplying a headline rate change by a fixed historical coefficient.

How to compare two Fed rate-hike episodes
Use the same checklist for each meeting instead of comparing the headline rate change alone.
- Measure expectations first. Identify the policy path investors had priced before the decision and whether the actual target range differed from that path.
- Record Treasury moves. Compare the two-year yield and real Treasury yields immediately before and after the announcement, then over the next several sessions.
- Track the dollar. A dollar surge can add pressure to dollar-priced Bitcoin; a dollar decline can provide an offset.
- Check risk appetite. Note equity volatility, credit conditions and whether investors were broadly reducing or adding risk.
- Assess Bitcoin’s starting trend. A market already falling on thin liquidity can react differently from one in a strong uptrend with deep spot demand.
- Inspect leverage and collateral. Funding rates, open interest and liquidation activity can turn a modest move into a cascade.
- Separate crypto news. Regulatory actions, exchange or stablecoin stress, security incidents and large market-specific flows can dominate the macro signal.
- Use multiple windows. Compare the announcement minutes, the rest of the FOMC day, the following days and the longer macro trend rather than treating one candle as the whole effect.
Three practical scenarios
Hawkish surprise in a leveraged market
Suppose traders expect a small increase but officials signal a materially higher future path. Two-year and real yields rise, the dollar strengthens and equities sell off. Leveraged Bitcoin positions lose collateral value, liquidations add supply and the initial rate shock is magnified. In this case, the macro and leverage channels reinforce one another.
Fully priced hike with a near-term pause signal
If the increase matches expectations and officials indicate that additional hikes may be limited, yields can fall after the press conference. Bitcoin may stabilize or rise even though the target range increased. The market is responding to the revised future path, not ignoring the current decision.
Rate hike overwhelmed by crypto demand
Strong spot buying, short covering or a major crypto-specific development can lift Bitcoin while rates rise. The result does not disprove the discount-rate channel; it shows that several channels operate at once and that the largest one can change from meeting to meeting.

How long can the effect last?
Event studies identify immediate FOMC-window responses, and some find persistent drift over subsequent days. A multi-week or multi-month result is less stable because the macro regime, inflation outlook, dollar trend, liquidity and crypto leverage continue to change. A single meeting can mark a turning point, but it can also be absorbed within hours if no new information about the policy path emerges.
For that reason, separate three questions: What happened in the announcement window? Did the move persist over the next several sessions? Did the broader tightening cycle alter Bitcoin’s trend over months? Each horizon has different drivers and should not be used as a substitute for the others.
What the Fed does not determine
The Federal Reserve does not set Bitcoin’s supply schedule, control exchange liquidity or determine every source of demand. Network activity, custody flows, derivatives positioning, regulation, stablecoin conditions, security incidents and large holders can all move the market independently. Monetary policy is one important cross-asset input, not a complete Bitcoin pricing model.
A disciplined way to interpret the next decision
- Write down the consensus target range and expected future path before the announcement.
- Watch the two-year yield, real yields, the dollar and broad risk indicators alongside Bitcoin.
- Read the statement and press-conference guidance for changes in the path, inflation assessment and balance-sheet policy.
- Check whether the move is occurring with unusual leverage, thin liquidity or forced liquidations.
- Attribute the result carefully: distinguish an expectation surprise from a crypto-specific shock.
- Treat historical coefficients as conditional estimates, not investment forecasts.
The practical conclusion is conditional rather than binary. Higher rates generally create a headwind through discount rates, liquidity, the dollar and leverage, and post-2020 studies find a more immediate Bitcoin response than some earlier research. Yet the size and direction of any particular move depend on what was expected, how guidance changes the future path and which competing forces are active when the decision arrives.
