The FDIC either transfers insured deposits to another bank or pays insured balances directly. Money above the applicable limit is not immediately insured: it becomes a claim against the failed bank’s receivership and may be returned gradually, sometimes over several years and not necessarily in full.
What FDIC insurance protects
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) is a U.S. government agency that protects depositors from losing insured deposits when an FDIC-insured bank or savings association fails. Coverage is automatic; you do not buy a separate policy or file an enrollment form. Eligibility depends on the institution, the financial product and how the account is owned.

The standard limit, verified against current FDIC guidance in 2026, is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. This is a three-part formula:

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Depositor: the person, trust, business or government entity with the ownership interest.
- Insured bank: deposits at separate FDIC-insured banks receive separate limits. Branches of one bank do not.
- Ownership category: accounts that meet the same legal ownership category at one bank are combined for the limit.
Principal and accrued interest through the date of failure count toward the limit. If a certificate of deposit has earned interest that has not yet been credited, that accrued amount is still part of the balance the FDIC evaluates.

Which financial products are covered
FDIC insurance applies to deposit products, not to everything sold by a bank or held in a brokerage account. The product must be an eligible deposit at an FDIC-insured institution.
| Product or asset | FDIC deposit insurance treatment |
|---|---|
| Checking accounts | Covered, subject to the applicable ownership-category limit |
| Savings accounts | Covered, subject to the applicable ownership-category limit |
| Money-market deposit accounts | Covered, subject to the applicable ownership-category limit |
| Certificates of deposit (CDs) | Covered, including accrued interest through the failure date, subject to the limit |
| Stocks and bonds | Not FDIC-insured deposits |
| Mutual funds | Not FDIC-insured deposits |
| Annuities and life-insurance policies | Not FDIC-insured deposits |
Investment products can lose value for market reasons even when purchased through a bank. FDIC insurance does not guarantee a market price, protect against investment losses or convert a non-deposit product into an insured deposit.
How the $250,000 limit is calculated
Accounts in one category are added together
Suppose you have a $180,000 savings account and an $100,000 CD in your individual name at the same insured bank. Both are generally in the single-ownership category, so the bank does not give each account a separate $250,000 limit. The combined $280,000, including any accrued interest, is evaluated against the single-category limit. The amount above the limit is uninsured.
Different branches do not create new coverage
Opening accounts at the downtown and airport branches of the same bank does not create two insurance limits. The FDIC treats them as deposits at one insured bank. Deposits at two different FDIC-insured banks are evaluated separately, provided each institution is legally a separate insured bank.

Separate categories can create separate limits
A depositor may have more than $250,000 at one bank when eligible funds are held in different ownership categories and each category’s requirements are met. Categories recognized in FDIC guidance include single accounts, joint accounts, certain retirement accounts, trust accounts, employee-benefit-plan accounts, business-entity accounts and government accounts. A different account label alone is not enough; the ownership and documentation must satisfy the rules for that category.
Revocable-trust example
The FDIC gives an example in which one owner of a revocable trust names three unique beneficiaries. Subject to the trust rules and other requirements, that arrangement may qualify for up to $750,000 of coverage at one bank. It is an illustration, not a universal result. The number and identity of owners and beneficiaries, beneficiary interests and the trust’s records can change the calculation.
What happens when an FDIC-insured bank fails
A bank failure usually occurs when regulators close the institution because it cannot meet its obligations. The FDIC then has two distinct roles: insurer and receiver. Understanding the difference explains why insured money is available quickly while excess balances can take years.
1. The FDIC becomes insurer for eligible deposits
In its insurer role, the FDIC determines which deposits are insured and up to what amount. It uses the bank’s records, account ownership and applicable category rules, counting principal plus interest accrued through the failure date.

2. Deposits may be transferred to an acquiring bank
In a purchase-and-assumption transaction, another insured bank assumes some or all of the failed bank’s deposits. Your account may continue at the acquiring institution, often with instructions about new account numbers, online access, checks, debit cards or branch services. Follow notices from the acquiring bank and the FDIC rather than assuming every product or service will operate unchanged.
3. The FDIC may pay insured balances directly
If no acquiring bank assumes the deposits, the FDIC pays insured depositors directly, generally to the depositor. The agency states a goal of completing deposit-insurance payments within two business days. Its FAQ also notes that payments have historically been made within a few days, often by the next business day, but timing is not a guarantee for every account.
4. The FDIC acts as receiver
Separately, the FDIC takes control of the failed bank’s assets and liabilities as receiver. It collects loans, sells assets and settles valid claims against the bank’s estate. This receivership process includes claims for deposit balances above the insurance limit.

How fast can you access your money?
| Situation | What you can expect |
|---|---|
| Deposits assumed by another insured bank | Access generally continues through the acquiring bank, subject to its transition instructions and any service changes. |
| Direct payment of insured deposits | The FDIC’s stated service goal is within two business days; typical cases have historically been resolved within a few days, often the next business day. |
| Complex trust, fiduciary or brokered records | Supplemental documentation or record review may be required, delaying a final insurance determination. |
| Funds above the insurance limit | They become a receivership claim. Payments depend on asset recoveries and may occur periodically over several years. |
Keep access and recovery separate in your planning. A prompt payment of the insured portion does not mean the uninsured portion has been decided or paid.

What happens to money above $250,000
An uninsured balance is not automatically forfeited, but it is not guaranteed either. The FDIC, as receiver, records the excess as a claim against the failed bank’s estate. As assets are collected and sold, uninsured depositors may receive pro-rata distributions. The amount and timing depend on recoveries, expenses and the priority of other claims. The FDIC says the process can take several years, and no particular recovery percentage should be assumed.
For example, if your properly combined single-category balance is $310,000 on the failure date, the insured amount is evaluated up to $250,000 and the remaining $60,000 is a receivership claim. If accrued interest raises the balance, that interest is included in the calculation and can increase the uninsured portion.

- Verify the institution. Use the FDIC’s BankFind tool to confirm that the legal institution holding your deposit is FDIC-insured. Do not rely only on a familiar brand name or a branch sign.
- List every account at that bank. Include checking, savings, money-market deposit accounts, CDs and accrued interest. Treat branches of the same bank as one institution.
- Identify the ownership category. Mark whether each account is single, joint, retirement, trust, employee-benefit-plan, business-entity, government or another category recognized by FDIC rules.
- Combine balances within each category. Compare the total for that depositor, bank and category with $250,000.
- Use the Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE). Enter account ownership and balances to estimate coverage across categories. For a complex trust, fiduciary arrangement, employee-benefit plan or brokered deposit, treat the result as an estimate and retain the underlying records.
- Resolve unclear ownership with the FDIC. The FDIC Information and Support Center can address questions that cannot be answered reliably from incomplete account details.
Records and account structures that need extra care
Joint accounts
Joint-account coverage depends on the ownership requirements and the interests of the co-owners. Do not assume that adding a name to an account automatically creates another full limit. Confirm that the account is titled and operated in a way that meets the joint-category rules.

Trust coverage can depend on the trust document, owners, beneficiaries and whether beneficiaries are identifiable and meet applicable requirements. A bank’s account title may not provide enough information for the FDIC to make a final determination without supporting records.

Fiduciary, employee-benefit-plan and brokered deposits
These deposits may be recorded through an intermediary or plan administrator. The FDIC can require supplemental ownership and beneficiary data before it can calculate coverage. Preserve participant schedules, custodial records, deposit listings and any instructions that establish each person’s interest.
Business and government accounts
Business-entity and government accounts have category-specific treatment. The legal identity of the entity and the way the account is titled matter. Do not combine or separate balances based only on a trade name, department name or internal bookkeeping label.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Counting each account separately: Add accounts in the same ownership category at the same bank.
- Treating branches as separate banks: Check the legal insured institution, not the branch address.
- Ignoring accrued interest: Include interest through the failure date when estimating the balance subject to the cap.
- Assuming every bank product is insured: Confirm that the asset is a deposit rather than a security, annuity or insurance policy.
- Assuming a label creates coverage: An account called a trust or business account must actually meet the category’s legal requirements.
- Expecting immediate payment of excess funds: Only the insured portion follows the prompt insurance-payment process; excess funds go through receivership.
- Discarding records: Keep titles, trust documents, beneficiary data and intermediary records until coverage is clear.
How to plan if your bank is closed
- Read the FDIC or acquiring-bank notice and confirm whether your deposits were transferred or will be paid directly.
- Follow the stated instructions for accessing online banking, checks, debit cards, certificates and automatic payments.
- Separate the amount identified as insured from any balance listed as a receivership claim.
- Submit requested documentation promptly if the FDIC asks for proof of ownership, beneficiaries or fiduciary interests.
- Keep copies of statements and correspondence, and monitor receivership updates for any later distribution on uninsured claims.
Bottom line for depositors
FDIC insurance is best understood as a coverage calculation, not a blanket guarantee of everything associated with a bank. Confirm that the institution is insured, confirm that the asset is a deposit, and calculate balances using the depositor-plus-bank-plus-ownership-category formula. If the bank fails, insured money is normally transferred or paid on a short timetable, while any excess becomes a receivership claim whose recovery can take years and may be incomplete.
