Match the task to the right government channel: use the state-linked Farmer Registry (part of AgriStack) for a Farmer ID and connected services, the official PM-KISAN portal or app for registration, e-KYC and payment status, e-NAM for mandi registration and auction lots, and mKisan for location- and language-specific SMS advisories. These services are connected in purpose but are not one universal app. State agriculture departments, the selected APMC and authorised assistance points can change the screens, documents and approvals you encounter.

This guide explains what each service does, the normal sequence for using it, where validation occurs, and what to do when an online route fails.

Which digital service handles which farming task?

India’s digital agriculture system combines registries, scheme portals, market software, mobile apps, SMS and assisted-access centres. Treat the services as complementary rather than competing applications.

Service Administered by Main task Access channels Where approval or validation matters
AgriStack Farmer Registry and Farmer ID State and union-territory systems within a national design from the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Connect a farmer’s identity and land-record information with schemes and services such as credit, crop insurance, weather advice and procurement State portals and camps, plus assisted help from CSCs, FPOs and KrishiSakhis The state registry and digitised land records; onboarding arrangements differ for owners, tenants and sharecroppers
PM-KISAN Central Sector scheme implemented with state validation and government banking infrastructure Apply for the benefit, complete e-KYC and check beneficiary or payment status Official PM-KISAN portal and app, with online, OTP and biometric functions State eligibility checks, record verification, e-KYC and payment processing
e-NAM National Agriculture Market platform working through participating Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) Register as a farmer, submit produce lots and follow electronic auctions e-NAM farmer app and the selected APMC APMC participation, KYC and local approval before permanent credentials are issued
mKisan Government agricultural advisory service Receive SMS on weather, crops, pests, practices and government schemes SMS service and official agriculture or extension channels Available language, location and subscription arrangements in the relevant state

Because the registries are maintained by states, a national description cannot promise identical forms or timelines in every district. Confirm local instructions before submitting personal or land information.

Prepare before starting any registration

A short preparation check prevents most avoidable delays. Keep the following information available, while recognising that the exact document list is set by the state, scheme or APMC:

  • Your name and contact details exactly as they appear in government records.
  • Land-record information and details of the parcels you cultivate. Farmer ID creation is described by the Ministry as synchronising farmer details with digitised land records.
  • A mobile number you can access for one-time passwords where the service offers OTP authentication.
  • Bank and beneficiary details already used for a government scheme, if you are checking a payment rather than beginning a new application.
  • For e-NAM, a working email address, the APMC where you intend to sell and the KYC information requested by that market.

If you do not have a smartphone, reliable connectivity or confidence with online forms, start with a Common Service Centre (CSC), Farmer-Producer Organisation (FPO), KrishiSakhi or a state registration camp. These are recognised support routes, not substitutes for the state’s own approval.

Getting a Farmer ID through AgriStack

What AgriStack and the Farmer Registry do

AgriStack is the digital infrastructure layer described by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare. Its foundational components are a Farmer Registry, geo-referenced village maps and a Crop Sown Registry maintained by states and union territories. The Farmer Registry is intended to connect farmers with services including credit, crop insurance, weather advisories and minimum-support-price procurement.

The Ministry’s wording is precise: “Farmer ID is created by synchronizing farmers’ details with their digitized land records.” A Farmer ID therefore helps systems identify and serve a farmer; it is not, by itself, proof that the farmer qualifies for every scheme. A separate Ministry release says the registry has provision to onboard landholding farmers and cultivators such as tenants and sharecroppers, but each state’s implementation determines which categories can actually be registered and what evidence is accepted.

Typical registration sequence

  1. Find the state route. Check your state agriculture department’s official notice, portal or registration camp for the current Farmer Registry process. Do not assume that a procedure shown in another state will apply to you.
  2. Choose online or assisted access. If the state offers a self-service screen, follow it; otherwise take your records to a CSC, FPO, KrishiSakhi or authorised camp.
  3. Review the consent notice. The national design describes consent-based collection and authorised sharing for specified purposes. Read the consent displayed by your state system and provide only the information requested for that service.
  4. Submit identity and cultivation details. The registry checks the information against digitised land records and any additional state records. If you cultivate as a tenant or sharecropper, ask the operator whether that category is currently supported and which local proof is required.
  5. Check the acknowledgement. Save the application or acknowledgement number and ask when and how the state will communicate the Farmer ID or a correction request.
  6. Correct mismatches through the state channel. A spelling, ownership or parcel discrepancy normally has to be fixed in the underlying land or registry record; creating another application can produce duplicate or conflicting entries.

How large is the system?

The Ministry reported more than 10.31 crore Farmer IDs as of 3 August 2026. It also reported more than 31.3 crore plots surveyed in 648 districts in the Rabi 2025–26 Digital Crop Survey. An earlier Ministry snapshot recorded more than 9.20 crore IDs on 19 March 2026; the later August figure is the more current national count. These are administrative totals, not measurements of higher income, faster payments or farmer satisfaction.

Using PM-KISAN for registration, e-KYC and status

Understand the benefit and the checks

The National Informatics Centre’s PM-KISAN project page describes a benefit of ₹6,000 per year, paid in three equal instalments, for eligible landholding farmer families. The amount is a scheme rule, not a promise that every applicant qualifies or that a payment will arrive on a particular date.

PM-KISAN is separate from Farmer ID. A Farmer ID can help connect records, but PM-KISAN still applies its own eligibility rules. States validate beneficiaries, records are checked and payment processing passes through the relevant government and banking systems.

Register or check an application

  1. Open the official PM-KISAN portal or mobile app. Use the Farmers Corner options rather than an unofficial form.
  2. Select the task you need. The service provides New Farmer Registration, Know Your Status, e-KYC, self-registration status, beneficiary information and grievance support.
  3. For a new application, complete the requested identity and land details. Review names, numbers and bank information before submitting; the state will validate the record.
  4. Complete e-KYC. The portal states that e-KYC is mandatory for registered farmers. Depending on the route offered to you, authentication can use an OTP or a biometric process.
  5. Save the reference details. Use Know Your Status or the app to see whether the application is under verification, accepted, rejected or awaiting another action.
  6. Use the grievance function if the record remains unresolved. Include the registration reference and describe the exact status shown rather than submitting repeated applications.

Common PM-KISAN outcomes

  • e-KYC pending: Re-enter the e-KYC route and complete the available OTP or biometric authentication. If the mobile number or identity data does not match, ask the authorised operator or the relevant state office how to update the underlying record.
  • No beneficiary record: Check that you used the correct state, district and registration details, then confirm whether the state has finished validating the application. A missing result is not evidence that the scheme has rejected you permanently.
  • Verification complete but payment absent: Review the status and bank details, then use the official grievance channel. Payment timing depends on government and banking processing; neither the portal nor a Farmer ID guarantees a release date.

Register and sell through e-NAM

Registration with the right mandi

e-NAM registration is tied to a selected APMC. Confirm that the mandi participates and ask its office about local requirements before you begin.

  1. Choose “Farmer” as the registration type. The e-NAM guidance identifies this selection for cultivators.
  2. Select the APMC where you plan to trade. Your choice determines which market reviews the request.
  3. Enter a correct email address and the requested details. An inaccessible or misspelled address can prevent you from receiving account information.
  4. Complete KYC and submit the application. The APMC reviews the submission and may require local confirmation.
  5. Wait for approval and permanent credentials. The registration guidance says credentials are issued after APMC approval; an application submission alone does not activate trading access.

Track a lot and decide on the auction result

The official e-NAM farmer module allows registration from the app’s home-page option. After you are approved, use the trading functions to:

  • View current consignments in My Lots.
  • Review the previous seven days in My Lots History.
  • Follow a lot from gate entry through gate exit.
  • See the winning auction price and choose to accept or reject it.

The accept-or-reject choice matters: the app does not tell a farmer that an online auction automatically forces acceptance of the winning bid. If a lot, gate event or price is missing, contact the APMC handling that consignment and quote the lot information shown in the app.

Receiving local advice by SMS with mKisan

The Government Services Portal describes mKisan as a service for personalised agricultural advisories by SMS. Messages can be tailored to language, location and preferred practices and may cover weather, crops, pest control and government schemes. This makes it useful when data connectivity is limited or a farmer prefers text messages to an app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use an official agriculture or extension channel to enrol. Ask the state department or local extension office which mKisan route is active in your area.
  2. Provide the location and language requested. These fields determine whether an advisory is relevant to your crop and season.
  3. Check the first messages for accuracy. If the district, crop or language is wrong, request a correction through the same official channel.
  4. Use advisories as local guidance, not a universal prescription. Confirm a serious pest, weather or input decision with the state agriculture or extension service, especially when conditions on your farm differ from the message.

AgriStack is also being integrated with weather-advisory services. Availability and language still depend on the state system delivering the service.

A practical order for using several services

Farmers often need more than one channel for the same season. The following sequence avoids treating one registration as automatic access to every benefit:

  1. Establish or correct the state record. Start with the Farmer Registry route if your land or cultivator details are missing or inconsistent.
  2. Apply to the specific scheme. Use PM-KISAN’s own registration and e-KYC tools if you are seeking that benefit; do not assume a Farmer ID submits the application for you.
  3. Prepare the market route separately. Register with the APMC selected for e-NAM and wait for its approval before planning an electronic lot.
  4. Subscribe to advice for the actual location. Select the mKisan language and location that match the farm, then cross-check unusually broad or urgent recommendations with local extension staff.
  5. Keep each reference number. A Farmer Registry acknowledgement, PM-KISAN status reference and e-NAM lot number belong to different systems and should not be substituted for one another.

Consent, privacy and responsible use

Official AgriStack materials describe consent-based data collection and controlled sharing with authorised entities for defined purposes. The Ministry’s 7 August 2026 PIB release says the federated Farmer Registry is owned by the respective states and that information is encrypted so only authorised systems can read it. The release quotes Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shri Ramnath Thakur: “The State Farmer Registry is built in a federated manner, which means the ownership of the data is with the respective States.”

These are statements about government system design, not an absolute guarantee that every interface is identical or that every security risk is eliminated. Read the consent notice on the state screen you are using, verify that you are dealing with an authorised portal or support point, and ask what specific purpose the requested information serves. If a correction is needed, use the responsible state, APMC or scheme channel rather than sending land or identity documents to an unknown intermediary.

When an online process fails

  • The portal does not show your village or parcel: Ask the state agriculture or revenue office whether the relevant land record has been digitised or mapped, then use the official correction route.
  • You cannot complete a mobile or biometric step: Take the acknowledgement and identity information to a CSC, FPO, KrishiSakhi or state camp and ask for assisted access.
  • Your Farmer ID does not unlock a scheme: Contact the scheme itself. Farmer ID is an infrastructure link, not a universal eligibility certificate.
  • e-NAM registration is waiting: Contact the selected APMC, because permanent credentials depend on its approval.
  • Advice arrives for the wrong crop or district: Request a location or preference correction through the official agriculture channel and verify urgent decisions with local extension staff.
  • You see conflicting instructions: Prefer the latest notice from the state department, the official PM-KISAN portal, the selected APMC or the Government Services Portal over forwarded messages and screenshots.

The most reliable approach is task-based: establish the correct state record, complete the separate scheme or market approval, and use assisted support whenever the digital route cannot verify your details.
