Under the Employees’ Pension Scheme, 1995 (EPS 1995), the monthly member’s pension is calculated as (pensionable salary × pensionable service) ÷ 70. The arithmetic is simple; determining the correct salary and service figures is not. EPS uses defined averaging periods, contribution records, eligibility rules and, in some cases, a two-year service weightage or higher-wage transition treatment.
The result below is an estimate unless EPFO verifies your individual records. Your pension commencement date, not simply the day you stopped working, can determine whether the salary average uses 12 months or 60 months.

What the EPS pension formula means
The EPS formula has three inputs: pensionable salary, pensionable service and the statutory divisor of 70. Pensionable salary is not automatically your final gross salary or the highest salary you earned. Pensionable service is not necessarily every year you were employed. Both figures are defined by EPS rules and the contributions received or receivable in the Employees’ Pension Fund.

How pensionable salary is determined
The salary is an average, not simply the last payslip
EPS defines pensionable salary by reference to average monthly pay during the relevant contributory period before exit from pension fund membership. The applicable period is based on the scheme rules and EPFO’s computation guidance. A member should therefore use the wages recognized for EPS purposes during the prescribed span, rather than substituting total career earnings, a gross salary figure or a preferred final-month amount.
When the 12-month window applies
EPFO’s Pension Manual states that where the date pension commences is before 1 September 2014, the relevant preceding contributory-period span is 12 months. This is a rule about the pension commencement date and the contributory period used for the calculation; it should not be simplified into “anyone who retired before 1 September 2014 uses 12 months.”
When the 60-month window applies
For a pension commencement date on or after 1 September 2014, the manual states that the preceding 60-month span is used. This longer averaging period can produce a different pensionable salary from a 12-month average, especially where pay changed substantially near the end of service.

EPFO’s December 2023 FAQ gives examples showing why retirement, exit from membership and pension commencement must be kept separate. Someone who retires after turning 58 may be treated as having superannuated at 58 for the relevant calculation. Someone who leaves employment earlier may choose or otherwise have pension commencement at 58, which can change the salary window used. Do not select the averaging period from the retirement date alone.
Partial months and non-contributory days
The scheme text includes a method for periods containing non-contributory days, partial months or times when the member was not on full pay. In those cases, the cited rule describes adding the wages actually paid and dividing by the actual number of wage-paid days, then multiplying by 30 to derive the monthly figure. This prevents a short or incomplete wage month from being treated as though it contained a full month of wages without adjustment.

Because the calculation depends on the wage-paid days and the contribution record, retain wage slips, employer contribution statements and any correspondence about non-contributory periods. A personal spreadsheet using unverified monthly figures cannot replace EPFO’s record-based determination.
How pensionable service is determined
Contribution-backed service controls the calculation
EPS pensionable service is determined with reference to contributions received or receivable on your behalf in the Employees’ Pension Fund. That means the service credited for EPS can differ from a simple count of calendar years with an employer. Breaks in covered employment, missing contributions, periods outside scheme coverage and record corrections can all affect the service recognized for pension purposes.

Do not count an unverified employment period merely because it appears on a résumé or an income-tax document.
Two-year service weightage
The EPS provisions contain a two-year addition to pensionable service in the stated circumstances involving a member superannuating at age 58 and/or having at least 20 years of pensionable service. The addition is subject to those conditions; it is not an automatic increase for every member or every type of pension. Apply it only after confirming the applicable category, age and service facts in the member’s case.
Show any weightage as a separate line in your working papers. For example, record the service established from contributions first, then identify whether the scheme permits the additional two years. Combining the addition silently with ordinary service makes it difficult to see whether the eligibility condition has actually been met.

Check which EPS pension category applies
The formula alone does not establish entitlement. EPS describes different pension categories with different age and service conditions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Category | High-level condition in the EPS provisions | What must still be checked |
|---|---|---|
| Superannuation pension | At least 20 years of eligible service and retirement at age 58 | Contribution-backed service, pension commencement treatment and any applicable amendments |
| Retirement pension | At least 20 years of eligible service and cessation of employment before age 58 | Exit date, commencement choice or rule, and the record of eligible service |
| Short-service pension | At least 10 years but less than 20 years of eligible service | Exact credited service, age and the provisions governing the claim |
These categories are an orientation, not a final entitlement decision. Scheme coverage, contribution history, exit and commencement dates, age and later amendments can change how EPFO handles an individual claim.
Higher-wage cases and the 1 September 2014 transition
EPFO’s Pension Manual does not create a separate mathematical formula for higher-wage pensions. The EPS formula remains the basis, while the applicable provisions determine which salary and service treatment is used.
For relevant higher-wage cases, the manual describes the same date-based salary windows: a 12-month span where pension commences before 1 September 2014 and a 60-month span where it commences on or after that date. For the latter cases, it describes pro-rata pensionable salary for service up to 1 September 2014 and for service after that date. The member’s eligibility, contribution history and the records accepted by EPFO determine whether this transition treatment applies.
Do not treat “higher wages” as permission to insert your full salary into the calculation. The higher-wage question concerns whether the member qualifies for the relevant treatment and how the pensionable salary and service are allocated across the transition. A record-based calculation is required.

Worked mathematical example
Assume, purely for illustration, that EPFO has established a pensionable salary of ₹15,000 per month and pensionable service of 30 years. The arithmetic is:
(₹15,000 × 30) ÷ 70 = ₹6,428.57 per month
This example demonstrates the operation of the formula only. The ₹15,000 salary and 30 years are hypothetical inputs, not an entitlement quote. A real case could produce different figures after applying the correct 12-month or 60-month average, contribution-backed service, any permitted weightage, higher-wage transition rules and the member’s eligibility category.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to make your own EPS estimate
- Identify the relevant dates. Write down your employment cessation or exit date, your age at exit, the date EPFO treats the pension as commencing and whether the case involves superannuation at 58. Keep these dates separate.
- Select the salary window. Use the 12-month preceding contributory span when the pension commencement date is before 1 September 2014, or the 60-month span when it is on or after 1 September 2014, subject to the applicable case rules.
- Collect recognized wage data. Use the wage figures on which EPS contributions were received or receivable. For partial months or non-contributory periods, apply the scheme’s wage-paid-days method rather than filling the gap with a full-month assumption.
- Calculate the pensionable salary. Average the recognized pay over the applicable span, including the adjustment required for incomplete or non-contributory periods.
- Reconcile pensionable service. Match each credited period to EPS contribution records. Separate ordinary service from any service that may qualify for the two-year weightage.
- Check the category conditions. Determine whether the facts fit superannuation, retirement or short-service pension requirements, including the relevant age and minimum service thresholds.
- Apply the formula. Multiply the established pensionable salary by the established pensionable service, including only a weightage that the applicable rule permits, and divide by 70.
- Compare the estimate with EPFO’s records. If your result differs from the member portal or an office calculation, investigate the dates, wage window, credited service and contribution corrections rather than changing the formula arbitrarily.
Using EPFO’s online higher-wage calculator
The EPFO member portal provides a tool titled “Calculator for estimating due for Pension on Higher Wages.” It is useful for understanding a possible amount or checking the broad effect of different inputs. EPFO’s own disclaimer describes the output as a ballpark estimate.
The portal also states that the actual dues calculated by the concerned Regional Office on the basis of records will be authentic. Treat the online number as an aid to review, not as a binding award. If the calculator and your documents disagree, retain a copy of the inputs and ask the Regional Office to explain the record or rule producing the difference.
Common calculation mistakes and how to correct them
Using gross or total career salary
EPS pensionable salary is a prescribed average of recognized pay. Replace a gross-salary shortcut with the wages used for EPS contributions during the applicable averaging period.

Choosing 12 or 60 months from the retirement date alone
The governing distinction is tied to pension commencement and the applicable case treatment. Reconstruct the commencement date, including any rule that treats a later retirement as superannuation at 58 or allows commencement at 58 after an earlier exit.
Counting every year worked as pensionable service
Service depends on contributions received or receivable in the pension fund. Reconcile employment periods with contribution records and resolve missing or disputed entries before relying on the total.
Adding two years automatically
The two-year weightage applies only in the circumstances specified by the scheme. Verify the age, pension category and service threshold before including it.
Applying a special higher-wage formula
There is no separate higher-wage equation in the manual. Determine whether the higher-wage provisions apply, then follow the EPS calculation and any required pro-rata treatment around 1 September 2014.
Treating a portal estimate as final
The calculator is expressly a ballpark tool. The Regional Office’s calculation from official records controls the amount recognized by EPFO.
What to document before challenging or confirming an amount
- The date pension commences and the date employment or membership ended.
- Your age at exit and whether the case is treated as superannuation at 58.
- The 12-month or 60-month salary span selected and the wage figures used for each month or wage-paid day.
- The EPS contribution periods used to establish pensionable service.
- Any proposed two-year weightage, with the condition relied on.
- Whether a higher-wage claim and pro-rata treatment around 1 September 2014 are involved.
- The eligibility category under which the pension is claimed.
- The inputs and output from the EPFO online calculator, clearly labeled as an estimate.
Keeping these items together lets you identify whether a disagreement is mathematical, a date-selection issue, a missing contribution, an eligibility question or a record correction. Only after those points are resolved can the formula produce a dependable case-specific figure.
