Dollar Express Rewards can turn qualifying rental spend into rental days. The current Dollar FAQ says members earn 1 point per qualifying U.S. dollar, while a one-day reward currently requires 500 points for a weekend rental or 625 points for a weekday rental. Rewards are limited to participating Dollar locations in the United States and Canada, must be reserved in advance, and do not erase taxes, airport charges, fuel, vehicle fees, or optional services. The rules below were checked against Dollar’s current FAQ and terms on October 13, 2026; confirm the live booking screen before relying on any point value.
Dollar Express Rewards at a glance
| Question | Current rule |
|---|---|
| Who can participate? | Customers age 18 or older with a U.S. or Canadian address, subject to the program terms. |
| Where do qualifying rentals occur? | Non-prepaid rentals at participating Dollar locations in the United States and Canada. |
| How are points earned? | 1 point for each qualifying U.S. dollar spent on a rental. |
| One-day weekend reward | 500 points, according to the current FAQ. |
| One-day weekday reward | 625 points, according to the current FAQ. |
| Vehicle classes listed for daily rewards | Compact, midsize and full-size cars, subject to location and inventory. |
| Point activity requirement | At least one qualifying earning or redemption transaction during the prior 24 months. |
| Missing-points deadline | Submit a claim within six months after the rental if you were a member when it occurred. |
These figures are program terms, not a guaranteed price for every itinerary. Dollar states that point levels, participating locations and available reward inventory can change.

Who is eligible to join and earn
Age and address requirements
Dollar’s FAQ says customers may join at age 18 or older. The official terms add an address requirement: participation is limited to individuals with a U.S. or Canadian address. Meeting the age requirement alone does not overcome the address restriction.
Being eligible for the program also does not remove ordinary rental rules. Renters under 25 may be charged an underage-driver fee, and each pickup location can apply its own driver, license, payment and security requirements.

Where the rental must take place
The current FAQ identifies non-prepaid rentals in the United States and Canada as qualifying, but only at participating locations and under the program terms. A Dollar reservation outside those countries, at a nonparticipating location, or on a rate excluded by the terms may not earn points even if the reservation appears in your account.
Join and set up the account before booking
Dollar describes Express Rewards enrollment as free. Create the account with your legal name and a U.S. or Canadian address, then note the member number shown in your profile. Review the preferred rewards-partner setting before making a reservation: Dollar says a rental selection can earn either Dollar points or a frequent-traveler reward, not both. Choosing Dollar Express Rewards is therefore an account and reservation decision, not an extra bonus layered onto another loyalty credit.
Before searching for a reward, make sure the account email and contact details are current. Save the member number in your travel records and sign in before beginning the reservation. Doing so helps the booking flow recognize your balance and makes it easier to match a receipt to the correct account if points do not post.
How to earn Dollar points
Use the published earning rate
Dollar currently publishes an earning rate of 1 point per qualifying U.S. $1 spent. For example, $180 in qualifying rental spend would produce 180 points under that rate. The rate is expressed in U.S. dollars; when a rental is priced in another currency, the qualifying amount and conversion shown by Dollar control the result.
Attach your member ID
Provide your Dollar Express Rewards member ID when you make the reservation or when you pick up the vehicle. Check the confirmation and your account after the rental so you can catch a missing credit while the transaction details are easy to retrieve.
Choose between Dollar points and a frequent-traveler credit
Dollar says members cannot earn Dollar points and a frequent-traveler reward for the same selection. Your profile includes a preferred rewards partner; select Dollar Express Rewards when the rental’s goal is building points toward a Dollar rental day. This is a choice for that earning event, not a way to receive both rewards.
Which rentals do not earn points
The terms exclude several rate types from rewards eligibility. The stated exclusions include:
- Industry discount rates.
- Tour rates.
- Prepaid rates.
- Complimentary rentals.
These exclusions matter because a lower advertised rate is not automatically a qualifying rate. Before paying, inspect the rate description and confirm that the reservation is non-prepaid when you are trying to earn points. A qualifying location and a member number cannot convert an excluded rate into an eligible one.

How many points does it take to earn a free rental day?
Dollar’s current FAQ lists two one-day thresholds:
| Reward | Points | What the published rule covers |
|---|---|---|
| One-day weekend rental | 500 | A one-day weekend reward at an eligible participating U.S. or Canadian location, subject to available inventory. |
| One-day weekday rental | 625 | A one-day weekday reward at an eligible participating U.S. or Canadian location, subject to available inventory. |
At the published earning rate, reaching 500 points requires $500 in qualifying spend, and reaching 625 points requires $625 in qualifying spend. That is a simple illustration, not a promise that every dollar on your invoice earns points or that a reward will be available when you reach the threshold.
Other reward lengths and car classes
Dollar describes daily, weekly and weekend rewards for compact, midsize and full-size cars. The live itinerary determines which combination is offered. The current materials do not establish one universal point chart for every rental length, vehicle class or location, so use the reward choices displayed after entering your dates, pickup location and vehicle class.

Availability is not the same as a fixed blackout calendar
Reward inventory is subject to availability. Dollar’s reviewed current pages do not provide a comprehensive, reliable blackout-date calendar. Treat a sold-out reward, an unavailable car class or a missing date as an inventory or location restriction rather than assuming that every weekend or holiday is permanently blocked.
How do I redeem my points for free rental days?
Redemption is completed online during a Dollar reservation. Follow this sequence:
- Sign in. Log in to your Dollar Express Rewards account before starting the reservation.
- Enter the itinerary. Choose the pickup and return locations, dates, times and vehicle class, then start a Dollar rental search.
- Choose the points option. During the booking flow, select the option to use Dollar Express Rewards points.
- Review available rewards. Select a reward offered for that exact itinerary. The displayed choice can vary by location, dates, car class and inventory.
- Check the conditions. Confirm the pickup location, vehicle class, dates, advance-reservation requirement and any remaining charges before submitting the reservation.
- Complete the booking. Dollar’s terms say points are automatically deducted when the reward reservation is made. Save the confirmation number and the points transaction.
A reward cannot be created retroactively at the counter after an ordinary rental has already been booked. The terms require an advance reservation, so make the reward selection in the online booking process.
What a “free” rental day still costs
A reward covers the contracted time and mileage charges identified by the terms. It does not make every line on the rental agreement zero. The renter remains responsible for:

- Fuel or refueling charges.
- Optional products and services.
The final amount depends on the pickup location, vehicle, local rules, fuel treatment and options you accept. Review the price summary before confirming and compare it with the rental agreement at pickup. If your goal is the lowest out-of-pocket cost, decline optional services you do not need and return the vehicle under the agreed fuel policy.

Compare the reward with a cash booking
Use the same itinerary for an apples-to-apples check. First note the cash price for the contracted time and mileage charges. Then record the points required and add every charge that remains payable on a reward: taxes, government or similar surcharges, airport fees, vehicle or license fees, fuel and optional products. A reward can remove the base charge while still leaving a substantial airport or tax bill.
Also compare the vehicle class. Dollar’s listed daily rewards cover compact, midsize and full-size cars, but the class you need may not be offered for your dates. A cash booking in a larger class can be better value than redeeming for a compact and paying to upgrade. Finally, consider flexibility: points may not come back after a late cancellation, no-show or early return, so a slightly less valuable redemption with firm dates can be safer than chasing the highest theoretical value.
Cancellation, no-shows and early returns
Cancel at least 24 hours before pickup
To have the points returned, cancel a reward reservation at least 24 hours before its scheduled pickup time. Keep the cancellation confirmation. A cutoff calculated from the pickup time is different from simply canceling on the previous calendar date, so check the exact time shown in your reservation.
What can forfeit the points
The terms say points are not returned for a no-show or an early return. They also warn that canceling less than 24 hours before pickup may result in no refund of the points. If your plans are uncertain, do not redeem until the itinerary is firm enough to meet the cancellation window.
Rewards cannot be transferred or stacked
Dollar’s terms state that rewards belong to the account holder, cannot be transferred, cannot be exchanged for cash or credit, and generally cannot be combined with another discount, promotion or frequent-traveler reward. Plan the reservation around the reward rather than expecting to apply it after another offer has been selected.
Will my points expire?
Dollar describes points as remaining active when the member has qualifying Dollar Express Rewards activity during the prior 24 months. Activity means points earned or redeemed on a rental. A login, profile edit or unrelated account action is not the activity described by the terms.
Keep a record of the date and type of your latest qualifying earning or redemption. If you are approaching 24 months without a rental, a qualifying rental that posts points or a redemption can reset the activity window under the program rule. Because Dollar can change program rules, verify the current expiration language in your account and the live terms.

How do I request missing points?
If a qualifying rental did not post, Dollar’s current FAQ says a member may submit a missing-points claim within six months after the rental, provided the person was already a member when the rental occurred. Use Dollar’s online Missing Points process or contact customer support through the channel listed in the FAQ.

Information to gather first
- Your Dollar Express Rewards member number.
- Rental agreement or confirmation number.
- Pickup and return dates and locations.
- The name on the rental and the email on the account.
- The rate type and a copy of the final receipt, if available.
Check the rate before filing. A prepaid, tour, industry-discount or complimentary rental may be excluded, in which case a missing-points claim is unlikely to qualify.
A practical way to decide whether to redeem
Use points when the itinerary is eligible and the residual charges are acceptable
Start with the reward shown for your exact dates and location, then read the taxes, surcharges and optional-service estimate. A 500-point weekend reward may be attractive when the normal time-and-mileage price is high, but the same redemption can be less useful if the location adds substantial airport charges or if you need a class that has no reward inventory.
Save points when flexibility matters more
Because a late cancellation, no-show or early return can leave the points unrecovered, keep points for a trip whose dates and pickup time are dependable. You can also wait when the available reward is for a smaller vehicle than you need; changing the class later may require a new search and a different point cost.

Compare the cash price of the contracted rental charges with the points required, then add the charges that remain payable. Include fuel, airport fees, taxes, vehicle fees and any optional products in the comparison. The reward is most valuable when it removes a meaningful portion of the base rental cost without forcing you into an unsuitable location or vehicle class.

The points option does not appear
- Confirm that you are logged into the correct account.
- Try a non-prepaid rate at a participating U.S. or Canadian location.
- Check whether the selected vehicle class has reward inventory.
- Review the dates for a different available reward type.
- Read the rate details for an industry, tour or prepaid exclusion.
The reward is unavailable after points were deducted
Do not create a second reservation blindly. Check the confirmation and account activity first. If the booking failed but the points transaction remains, use the support route listed by Dollar and provide the confirmation number, timestamp and member number.
The rental ended early
An early return may not qualify for a points refund under the terms. Contact Dollar promptly about the rental agreement and keep written confirmation of any adjustment; do not assume unused hours automatically restore the reward.
The rental posted no points
Check the six-month claim deadline, verify that your member ID was attached, and confirm that the rate and location qualified. Submit the Missing Points request with the agreement and receipt details before the deadline.

Dollar’s terms allow the company to change point levels and program rules. The 500-point weekend and 625-point weekday figures are the current FAQ values checked on October 13, 2026, not permanent guarantees. Before spending points, open the live FAQ and the reservation flow, confirm the reward displayed for your itinerary, and read the terms governing cancellation and residual charges. That final check protects you from relying on an older point chart or an unavailable reward.
