AI data centers use electricity to run computing equipment and the systems that support it; their water footprint includes cooling and upstream use in electricity generation and chip manufacturing; and their land footprint includes both facility sites and land associated with supplying their electricity. The amount depends on the workload, facility design, energy source and location. The headline global figures are estimates with different dates and accounting boundaries—not a universal footprint for each AI task, and not all data-center demand is AI demand.
How do AI data centers use electricity?
AI training and deployment take place mainly in data centers. Servers perform computation and storage, while networks, cooling, power equipment and other site systems keep those servers operating. Electricity use therefore means more than the power consumed by processors or accelerators such as GPUs.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) says servers account for around 60% of electricity demand in modern data centers on average, but that share varies considerably by facility type. Cooling can account for about 7% in efficient hyperscale facilities and more than 30% in less-efficient enterprise facilities. These are ranges for different facility contexts, not a fixed split that applies to every AI site.
What equipment is included?
- Computing and storage: Servers, CPUs and accelerators handle AI workloads and store data.
- Networking: Equipment moves data among servers and between the facility and users or other systems.
- Cooling and environmental control: Systems remove heat and maintain operating conditions.
- Power infrastructure and site services: Uninterruptible power supplies, backup generators, lighting and other building systems also contribute to site electricity demand.
As the IEA puts it in its Energy and AI report, published 10 April 2025: “There is no AI without energy – specifically electricity for data centres.” That statement describes a basic operational dependency; it does not mean that every data center’s electricity consumption is used for AI.

How much electricity do data centers use?
| Estimate | Figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| IEA estimate for 2024 | About 415 TWh, roughly 1.5% of global electricity consumption | Global data-center electricity use, not AI-only use. The IEA reported that demand had grown at about 12% annually over the preceding five years. |
| IEA outlook for 2025 and 2030 | About 485 TWh in 2025; 950 TWh in 2030, around 3% of projected global electricity demand in 2030 | Projected total data-center use. The IEA expects AI-focused facilities to grow faster than the total, but the global total is not an AI-only forecast. |
| UNU-INWEH estimate and projection | 448 TWh in 2025; 945 TWh in 2030 | Global data-center electricity figures accompanying its electricity-related land-footprint estimate. This is a separate report and accounting basis from the IEA outlook. |
The IEA figures come from its 2025 estimate and 2026 outlook; the UNU-INWEH figures are from its 2026 report. The two 2025 and 2030 estimates are not interchangeable or proof of a precise discrepancy: forecasts and estimates depend on source, method and accounting boundary. The IEA outlook also notes uncertainty related to deployment, supply-chain and market constraints. Treat projections as scenarios rather than guaranteed outcomes.
How much water do data centers use?
Water accounting has two main parts: water used at the facility, often for cooling, and water used elsewhere to supply electricity and manufacture hardware. A cooling-only figure leaves out those upstream uses, while a total-footprint estimate can include them. The relative contribution of each depends on cooling technology, climate, electricity supply and the boundary of the estimate.

What is the difference between water withdrawal and consumption?
Withdrawal is water taken from a surface-water or groundwater source. Consumption is the portion not returned to its original source, for example because it evaporates. A facility may withdraw a substantial volume yet return some of it; withdrawal and consumption should not be reported as if they were the same quantity.

What do the published water figures include?
| IEA estimate | Amount | Boundary and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Illustrative US hyperscale facility | Around 2 million litres per day for a 100 MW data center | IEA’s 2025 report estimate; more than 60% of the estimated use is indirect. It is an illustrative case, not a standard rate for every facility. |
| Global annual consumption estimate | Around 560 billion litres per year | IEA estimate at the time of its 2025 report, with indirect water use included—not a measure of on-site cooling alone. |
| Global 2030 base case | Around 1,200 billion litres per year | IEA projection in its 2025 report using the report’s broader water boundary. |
For 2023, the IEA attributed about two-thirds of data-center water consumption to primary energy supply and electricity generation, around one-quarter to direct cooling, and the remainder to semiconductor and microchip manufacturing. These are shares within that estimate’s broader boundary; they should not be compared directly with a company’s disclosure of water used at its own sites unless the accounting boundaries match.
The distinction matters when interpreting a claim that a facility is “water-efficient.” It might describe direct cooling performance without accounting for water used to generate its electricity or manufacture its equipment. Conversely, an electricity source with a different water profile can change indirect use even if a facility’s cooling system stays the same.
What is the land footprint of data centers?
There is no single land measure. One is the physical area occupied by buildings and their sites. Another is the land associated with supplying their electricity, including generation and supply chains. A system-level electricity footprint must not be described as the acreage directly occupied by data-center buildings.

| Measure | Figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Land footprint associated with data-center electricity demand | 6,900 km² in 2025; could exceed 14,500 km² by 2030 | UNU-INWEH 2026 report estimate and projection. These are electricity-related land footprints, not direct measurements of data-center site area. |
| Land physically occupied by AI data-center buildings worldwide | No single agreed global figure established here | This is a different measure from land associated with electricity demand; do not substitute one for the other. |
A separate USGS 2026 spatial synthesis offers a regional siting perspective rather than a global land-area total. It identifies 771 AI data centers and more than 3,300 power plants across 11 western US states and Alaska, and examines proximity to transmission, power plants and Bureau of Land Management lands. Its geography is limited, and the report does not provide a detailed environmental or regulatory impact analysis. The counts and proximity analysis therefore should not be presented as a full assessment of land occupied or environmental effects.
Why can electricity, water and land impacts move in different directions?
There is no universally cleanest cooling system, electricity source or location on the evidence here. The IEA describes a water-versus-energy efficiency trade-off: a cooling approach that minimizes water use can consume more energy, and vice versa. UNU-INWEH likewise cautions that changing electricity sources can shift water and land footprints in a different direction from carbon impacts. A low-carbon choice is not automatically a low-water or low-land choice.
That is why comparing facilities by one headline metric can mislead. A meaningful comparison needs to state the boundary and consider the relevant local conditions alongside total demand.

- Electricity: distinguish computing from supporting loads where data allow, and specify whether the figure covers a site, a data-center category or all data centers.
- Water: separate direct cooling withdrawals and consumption from indirect use in power generation and hardware supply chains.
- Land: state whether the figure is direct site area or land associated with electricity supply and supply chains.
- Location and supply: consider the electricity mix, grid capacity, local water conditions, climate and proximity to generation and transmission infrastructure.
Local conditions affect what a footprint means in practice. A volume of water or area of land is not by itself a measure of local pressure: where the resource is drawn from and what else depends on it matter. The USGS siting study can help frame questions about infrastructure proximity in the region it covers, but it is not a substitute for site-specific environmental or regulatory analysis.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can you calculate the footprint of one AI request from these figures?
No reliable per-request figure follows from the global and facility-level estimates above. They do not establish one universal electricity, water or land amount for each query, because the task, hardware configuration, facility efficiency, electricity supply and accounting method can differ.
A per-request estimate would need a defined task and system boundary, measured or modeled energy use, and an explicit method for allocating shared data-center loads and upstream impacts. Without those assumptions, dividing a global annual total by an assumed number of requests would create a precise-looking number that the published figures do not support.

How should you read a data-center footprint claim?
Before comparing a company disclosure, news figure or projection, check what it measures and where the number came from. A well-qualified claim identifies its date, geography, unit, source and boundary; a figure without those details may not be comparable with another facility’s disclosure.
- Identify the activity: Does the number cover AI workloads, a type of data center or the entire data-center sector?
- Check the measure: Is the electricity number consumption or a projection? Is water reported as withdrawal or consumption? Is land a facility site or an electricity-related footprint?
- Find indirect impacts: Determine whether power generation and hardware supply chains are included, especially when comparing water totals.
- Match time and geography: Keep the reporting year, forecast year and location attached to the figure. Global estimates, a US illustrative facility and a regional siting study answer different questions.
- Compare like with like: Use the same boundary and units before ranking sites or technologies; otherwise, explain the difference instead of declaring one option better overall.
For a personal-finance reader, the practical point is not to infer household electricity or water costs from global totals. These figures describe infrastructure demand and resource footprints, not a direct bill calculation for an individual user’s AI activity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can AI data-center water use be measured from a company’s cooling-water disclosure alone?
Not as a complete water footprint. A cooling disclosure can describe direct site use, but a broader estimate may also count water used for electricity generation and chip manufacturing, so the boundary has to be stated before the numbers can be compared.
Does the 1.5% figure mean AI uses 1.5% of the world’s electricity?
No. It is the IEA’s estimate for all data-center electricity use in 2024, not electricity attributable only to AI. AI is one source of data-center demand, and the cited global figure does not isolate its share.
Can I estimate how much electricity one AI question uses by dividing global data-center use by the number of questions asked?
That calculation would require a reliable count of requests and a method for assigning shared facility loads, hardware use and other activities to each request. The global estimates cited here do not supply those inputs, so the result would depend on unsupported assumptions.
Does the USGS count show how much land AI data centers occupy in the United States?
No. It is a regional inventory and proximity analysis covering 11 western states and Alaska, not a nationwide measurement of building-site area. It also does not amount to a detailed environmental or regulatory assessment.
