How Dividend Growth Can Affect the Long-Term Returns of Payment Stocks

Dividend growth can increase the cash income paid for each share of a payment company, and reinvesting those payments can buy additional shares that may generate further dividends. That compounding mechanism can support long-term wealth, but dividend growth is not the same as total return and does not guarantee that a payment stock will outperform the market.

To judge the effect, compare share-price gains and reinvested dividends over identical dates against the same benchmark. Recent annual-report figures for Mastercard, Visa and Global Payments show why the company, period and measurement method matter.

What dividend growth changes for a payment-stock investor

Higher cash income per share

A dividend increase raises the dollar distribution attached to each share held on the relevant record date. An investor who owns 100 shares receives 100 times the declared per-share dividend, before any applicable taxes or withholding. If the share count stays constant, a higher payout produces more cash income.

Mastercard’s reported cash dividend per share rose from $2.28 in 2023 to $2.64 in 2024 and $3.04 in 2025. Those are annual per-share amounts reported in Mastercard Incorporated’s 2025 Form 10-K, published in 2026. The increase describes income per share; it does not, by itself, say how the stock performed.

More shares when dividends are reinvested

With a dividend-reinvestment arrangement, each payment purchases a fractional or whole number of shares at the reinvestment price. Those shares can receive future dividends. The effect is compounding: the investor’s share count can grow even when no new money is added.

Reinvestment also changes the return calculation. A price-only return ignores cash distributions, while a total-return calculation credits dividends—usually by assuming they are reinvested—along with the change in the share price.

Dividend growth is not a total-return forecast

Total return depends on the starting valuation, subsequent earnings and cash-flow expectations, price changes, dividend payments and the dates selected. A company can increase its dividend while its stock price falls, leaving an investor with a disappointing total return. Conversely, a stock with a modest yield can deliver a strong total return if its price appreciates substantially.

How to measure long-term return correctly

Use a consistent framework before comparing payment stocks:

Element What to specify Why it matters
Starting point Investment amount and exact start date A different starting price or date can materially change the outcome.
End point Exact end date Market cycles and fiscal-year timing affect the result.
Dividend treatment Price return or total return with dividends reinvested Reinvestment credits the cash distributions and the shares they purchase.
Benchmark For example, the S&P 500 or S&P 500 Financials Index It shows whether the stock added value relative to a broad or sector alternative.
Dividend measure Per-share payout, yield, or growth rate Yield and payout growth describe income; neither is the same as total return.

When an annual report says that $100 grew to a stated value with dividends reinvested, the ending figure is an indexed total-return value, not a promise about a new investment. Keep the dates and reinvestment assumption attached to every number.

What recent payment-stock comparisons show

Issuer-reported figures provide useful illustrations, but they are not a controlled study of whether dividend growth caused performance. The periods are not identical, and each company’s graph uses its own stock history and assumptions.

Company and source Period and assumption $100 ending value Benchmark values What the figure establishes
Mastercard, 2025 Form 10-K December 31, 2020 to December 31, 2025; dividends reinvested $164.50 S&P 500: $196.16; S&P 500 Financials Index: $203.47 Mastercard’s indexed total return was below both cited benchmarks for this five-year period.
Visa, FY2025 annual-report financial page September 30, 2020 to September 30, 2025; dividends reinvested $177 S&P 500: $214; S&P 500 Financials Index: $246 Visa’s five-year indexed value was below both benchmarks on this different end date.
Global Payments, 2025 Form 10-K December 31, 2020 to December 31, 2025; dividends reinvested $37.54 S&P 500: $196.16; S&P 500 Financials Index: $203.47 The company’s indexed value was far below the benchmarks; the graph does not identify dividend policy as the cause.

Visa’s same annual-report page also gives a ten-year cumulative return through September 30, 2025: 426% for Visa, 315% for the S&P 500 and 258% for the S&P 500 Financials Index. That longer result cannot be placed directly beside the five-year Mastercard or Global Payments figures as if the periods were the same.

The Mastercard Form 10-K describes its method plainly: “The graph assumes a $100 investment in our Class A common stock and both of the indices and the reinvestment of dividends.” The statement confirms the reinvestment assumption and the indexed starting amount; it does not establish that dividend increases produced the share-price result.

Mastercard’s dividend history: what can and cannot be inferred

Mastercard’s investor-relations dividend-history page lists quarterly dividends of $0.57 in 2023, $0.76 in 2025 and $0.87 in listed 2026 declarations; the page was accessed October 13, 2026. These are declaration amounts shown by quarter, whereas the Form 10-K figures of $2.28, $2.64 and $3.04 are annual per-share amounts. Do not add or compare the series without checking the relevant declaration, record and payment dates.

A rising history can demonstrate that the board increased the declared payout in those periods. It cannot guarantee another increase or even a future payment. Mastercard states that dividend declarations and payments are at the board’s sole discretion and depend on financial condition, operating results, available cash, and current and anticipated cash needs.

Why dividend growth may coincide with different returns

Price changes can overwhelm the dividend

For a high-value payment network or processor, the stock-price move can be much larger than several years of dividend income. A 20% price decline is not offset automatically by a 2% annual yield. Conversely, a rising price can make a low-yield stock’s total return attractive even if its payout grows slowly.

Valuation at the purchase date matters

Buying after an unusually optimistic period can reduce future returns even when the company keeps raising its dividend. Buying at a lower valuation can improve the prospective relationship between cash income and price appreciation. Dividend growth does not remove the effect of the entry price.

Cash can be allocated in several ways

A payment company can return cash through dividends, share repurchases or debt reduction, while also funding network expansion, technology, compliance and acquisitions. A larger dividend may leave less cash for another use, but the best choice depends on the return management can earn on retained capital and on the balance sheet. The dividend number alone cannot reveal that trade-off.

Growth rates and yields are different

Dividend yield equals the annual dividend divided by the share price. A fast-growing dividend can still produce a low yield if the share price is high. A high yield can result from a falling share price rather than a healthy payout. Compare the per-share dividend, its growth, the payout’s sustainability and total return separately.

How to compare payment stocks without misleading yourself

  1. Align the dates. Use the same start and end dates for every company and benchmark. Mastercard and Global Payments’ cited comparisons end December 31, 2025, while Visa’s cited comparison ends September 30, 2025.
  2. Choose one return definition. Use total return with dividends reinvested when assessing wealth accumulation, or state clearly that you are using price return.
  3. Use the same benchmark. A broad S&P 500 comparison answers a different question from an S&P 500 Financials Index comparison.
  4. Record the investment convention. Note whether the comparison starts with $100, uses closing prices, and reinvests each distribution.
  5. Separate income data from performance data. Track dividend per share, dividend yield and total return in different columns.
  6. Investigate the business before attributing causes. Examine earnings, cash flow, regulatory conditions, credit losses where relevant, acquisitions and capital allocation. A return graph alone cannot identify which factor drove the result.

Should you reinvest dividends from payment stocks?

When automatic reinvestment can help

  • It keeps distributions invested instead of leaving cash idle.
  • It increases the share count, allowing later dividends to apply to more shares.
  • It imposes a regular purchase schedule without requiring a separate trading decision.

When taking cash may be preferable

  • You need the income for spending or a planned withdrawal.
  • The stock no longer fits your valuation, risk or diversification rules.
  • Taxes, account rules or transaction terms make automatic reinvestment unsuitable in your jurisdiction or account.

Reinvestment is a choice about cash use, not evidence that the stock is attractively valued. An investor can receive the dividend and decide separately whether to buy the same stock, a different asset or hold cash.

Risks and limits to keep in view

  • Board discretion: A past increase does not bind the board to declare another dividend. Mastercard’s stated policy ties future decisions to financial condition, operating results, available cash and expected cash needs.
  • Non-comparable periods: Visa’s September 30 endpoint differs from the December 31 endpoints used for Mastercard and Global Payments.
  • Historical, nominal figures: The reported values are historical and nominal. The cited material does not provide an inflation-adjusted comparison.
  • No causal proof: The issuer graphs show what happened under specified assumptions; they do not isolate the effect of dividend growth or predict future returns.
  • Benchmark choice: A stock can lag one benchmark and beat another because the indexes contain different companies and sector exposures.
  • Company-specific risk: Payment networks and processors can face regulation, technology changes, competition, fraud, economic slowdowns and execution risk. Dividend growth does not eliminate those risks.

A practical checklist for long-term research

  • Write down the exact start and end dates.
  • Confirm whether dividends are reinvested.
  • Use both a broad-market and a relevant sector benchmark when appropriate.
  • Record annual dividend per share and the dates of each increase.
  • Check whether cash flow and the balance sheet support the payout.
  • Review total return, not only yield or dividend growth.
  • Treat issuer graphs as historical evidence, not forecasts.
  • Reassess the stock’s valuation and portfolio role independently of its dividend policy.
