Exchange rates can change Netflix’s U.S.-dollar revenue even when customers continue paying the same amounts in their local currencies. Netflix consolidates worldwide results in U.S. dollars, so a weaker euro, pound, real, peso or Canadian dollar translates into fewer dollars. A stronger foreign currency does the opposite. The effect also reaches operating and content costs, while forward contracts and gradual local-price changes provide only partial, uneven offsets.
Why exchange rates matter to Netflix’s reported revenue
Netflix bills subscribers and pays suppliers in many currencies, but its consolidated financial statements are presented in U.S. dollars. The translation step is therefore central to understanding international growth: local-currency activity and reported dollar results can move in different directions.

For the six months ended June 30, 2025, currencies other than the U.S. dollar represented 55% of Netflix revenue and 29% of operating expenses, according to the company’s FY2025 Form 10-K. Netflix identifies the euro, British pound, Brazilian real, Mexican peso and Canadian dollar among its primary exposures. Those percentages describe that reporting period, not a permanent mix for every quarter or year.

What a weaker foreign currency does
Suppose a subscriber continues paying 100 units of a local currency. If the dollar strengthens against that currency, those 100 units convert into fewer dollars when Netflix prepares its consolidated results. The subscriber has not necessarily canceled, downgraded or paid less locally; the reported-dollar translation has changed.

The reverse occurs when the foreign currency strengthens against the dollar: unchanged local-currency billings translate into more U.S. dollars. Consequently, reported international revenue reflects both Netflix’s underlying business performance and the exchange rates used for consolidation.
Netflix’s reported revenue versus constant-currency revenue
Netflix uses a constant-currency comparison to separate exchange-rate translation from changes in the business itself. Under the method described in its FY2024 Form 10-K, current-period foreign-currency revenue is translated using the comparable prior-year exchange rates. Netflix excludes the effects of realized hedges from both periods’ revenue in that comparison.
Constant currency is an analytical convention, not a second set of GAAP revenue and not cash Netflix failed to collect. It answers a narrower question: what would the reported-dollar comparison have looked like if exchange rates had stayed at the reference period’s levels?

The FY2024 difference was attributed primarily to the Argentine peso’s devaluation against the U.S. dollar, alongside significant local-currency price increases in that market. A constant-currency gap therefore does not prove that customer demand fell. It indicates that exchange rates reduced the dollar value of the activity being compared.

Revenue translation is only part of the earnings effect
Foreign exchange affects the dollar value of costs as well as sales. Netflix Investor Relations states: “Currency movements will impact both the value of our revenues as well as the value of our operating and content costs.” The statement appears in its Top Investor Questions.
Operating expenses
Local payroll, marketing, facilities and other operating expenses may become cheaper or more expensive in dollar terms as exchange rates move. Because 29% of operating expenses were denominated in currencies other than the dollar during the six months ended June 30, 2025, a revenue translation loss can be partly offset when related foreign-currency costs also translate into fewer dollars. The offset is not automatic: the percentages of revenue and expenses exposed differ, and their currencies, timing and rates may not match.
Content and production costs
Netflix licenses and produces content around the world. Contracts and production spending can create foreign-currency exposures that affect cost of revenues. A currency move that lowers translated revenue may also lower the dollar value of some content obligations, while a move in the opposite direction can increase them. Investors should therefore avoid treating the 55% revenue exposure as a direct measure of the effect on operating income.
Other monetary and intercompany items
Netflix also reports foreign-currency monetary assets and liabilities, intercompany balances and foreign-currency debt. Depending on the instrument and whether it is designated as a hedge, exchange effects can appear in interest and other income or expense, be offset by remeasurement effects, or remain in accumulated other comprehensive income (AOCI) as part of a net-investment hedge until the related foreign investment is sold or liquidated. Not every currency gain or loss runs through the revenue line.

How Netflix hedges currency risk
Netflix uses foreign-exchange forward contracts to mitigate fluctuations in forecast U.S.-dollar-equivalent revenue and for some forecast or committed content-licensing and production exposures. The company describes the program as a way to reduce volatility, not as a guarantee that exchange rates will have no effect.
Cash-flow hedges for forecast revenue
For designated cash-flow hedges, gains or losses initially accumulate in AOCI. They are reclassified into revenue in the same period that the forecast transaction affects earnings. This timing is intended to align a hedge result with the underlying revenue rather than placing the entire derivative movement in an unrelated period.
Hedges of content exposures
Forward-contract gains or losses associated with forecast or committed content licensing and production exposures are reclassified to cost of revenues as the underlying content assets are amortized. The accounting location and timing consequently differ from a revenue hedge.
What remains unhedged
Netflix Investor Relations says its FX risk-management program began in 2023 and concentrates on currencies with the largest exposure and greatest risk or volatility. It also says: “We won’t hedge all of our currencies and are focusing on the currencies where we have the largest exposure and greatest risk/volatility, among other factors.” Coverage can therefore vary by currency, exposure type and period. Netflix’s filing likewise warns that its contracts may reduce, but not eliminate, currency effects and that some exposures may remain unhedged.

Understanding Netflix’s 10% hedge sensitivity
The FY2025 filing provides a hypothetical accounting sensitivity for forecast-revenue contracts. If the U.S. dollar had weakened by 10% at June 30, 2025, the amount in AOCI related to those contracts, before taxes, would have been approximately $2.224 billion lower. Netflix says that adverse AOCI change would be expected to offset a corresponding favorable currency change in the underlying forecast revenue when that revenue is recognized.
This is not a prediction that revenue will fall by $2.224 billion, nor is it a forecast of a 10% sales loss. It is a sensitivity of a hedge-accounting balance under one assumed exchange-rate move. The result depends on the contracts, the exposure being hedged and the accounting designation in place at that date.

Netflix says it “also slowly adjust[s] pricing over time to mitigate foreign exchange moves over the longer term,” according to its Investor Relations Q&A. A local price increase can restore some dollar-equivalent revenue after a currency devaluation, while a price reduction may be considered when local affordability or competitive conditions require it.

How to interpret a strong U.S. dollar
A stronger U.S. dollar is generally a translation headwind for Netflix’s foreign-currency revenue: the same local billings produce fewer dollars. It can also reduce the dollar value of some foreign operating and content costs, creating a partial natural offset. The net effect on operating income depends on the relative size, currency and timing of revenue and costs, plus hedge results.
A weaker dollar generally produces the opposite translation direction, increasing the dollar value of unchanged foreign-currency activity while potentially raising the dollar cost of foreign expenses. Neither direction by itself establishes whether subscriber trends, pricing power or profitability improved.
A practical framework for reading Netflix’s currency disclosures
- Start with the reporting period. Percentages and dollar estimates change with exchange rates, geographic mix and the length of the measurement window. Label figures such as 55%, 29%, $379 million and $1.424 billion with their stated periods.
- Separate reported from constant currency. Reported revenue is the U.S.-dollar amount in the financial statements. Constant currency is Netflix’s comparison using prior-year exchange rates and excluding realized hedge effects from both periods.
- Check local-currency performance. A dollar translation decline does not demonstrate that local-currency sales declined. Look for subscriber, pricing and local-revenue information before drawing an operating conclusion.
- Include costs. Compare the currency exposure of operating and content costs with revenue exposure; a revenue-only calculation can overstate the earnings impact.
- Read the hedge notes. Identify which exposures are hedged, where gains or losses are recorded and when they are reclassified. Hedge accounting can change timing and presentation without removing the underlying economic exposure.
- Treat sensitivities as scenarios. A 10% exchange-rate sensitivity, including the $2.224 billion AOCI example, illustrates possible accounting effects under stated assumptions; it is not management’s forecast.
- Consider the time horizon. Translation appears in the current reporting period, while pricing adjustments are described only as gradual and long term. Do not assume a near-term price change will offset a current-quarter currency move.
What currency figures can—and cannot—tell an investor
- They can show translation pressure. The $379 million first-half 2025 constant-currency difference quantifies Netflix’s estimate of how exchange rates affected that comparison.
- They can reveal the breadth of exposure. The 55% non-dollar revenue share indicates that exchange rates are material to consolidated reporting.
- They cannot isolate demand on their own. Constant-currency revenue is not a replacement for local-currency sales, subscriber trends or retention data.
- They cannot be converted directly into profit impact. Costs, hedges, contract timing, taxes and other foreign-currency items affect earnings presentation.
- They cannot establish a fixed annual drag. The disclosed dollar differences are tied to specific periods and exchange-rate paths.
For financially curious readers, the central distinction is straightforward: Netflix may collect substantially the same local-currency revenue while reporting fewer U.S. dollars when foreign currencies weaken. Its forward contracts, foreign-currency costs and gradual pricing actions can soften that effect, but Netflix explicitly leaves some exposures unhedged and does not claim to eliminate currency risk.
