For U.S. federal income-tax purposes, cryptocurrency is treated as property, not currency. Buying it with dollars usually creates a cost basis but is not itself a taxable sale. Selling it for dollars, swapping it for another digital asset, or spending it on goods or services generally disposes of the asset and can create a capital gain or loss. Moving crypto between wallets or accounts you own is generally non-taxable, although fees paid in crypto and transfers that change ownership require separate analysis.
This guide covers individuals holding digital assets as capital assets. Business inventory, compensation, estates and trusts, decentralized-finance arrangements, staking, lending, wrapping, gifts, NFTs, state taxes and non-U.S. rules can produce different results. The IRS generally uses “digital assets” in current guidance. Its older virtual-currency FAQs generally apply to transactions before January 1, 2025; newer digital-asset FAQs address transactions from 2025 onward.

The tax result depends on what you did with the crypto
The same token can have different tax treatment at different moments. A dollar purchase normally establishes basis. A later disposition compares the asset’s amount realized with its adjusted basis. Receiving crypto for services is generally income when received, while disposing of that received crypto later can create a separate gain or loss.

| Pay a merchant with crypto | Generally a disposition of the crypto used for payment | Value received, units spent, basis, timestamp and payment record |
| Move crypto between wallets you own | Generally non-taxable transfer; a crypto-denominated fee may be a separate disposition | Wallet identifiers, transaction hash, date, amount and proof of common ownership |
| Receive crypto for services | Fair market value at receipt is generally income; later disposal is a separate event | Receipt value and time, payer, units and subsequent disposition records |
Do I pay taxes when I buy crypto?
Usually not merely because you bought cryptocurrency with dollars. The purchase generally establishes your basis in the units. The IRS’s legacy virtual-currency guidance describes basis as the amount spent, including fees, commissions and other acquisition costs; current digital-asset guidance generally expresses basis as cost in U.S. dollars.

For every purchase, record the asset, quantity, date and time, dollar amount, and qualifying acquisition costs. Keep the exchange confirmation or blockchain record. A purchase is not a disposition, so do not report it as a sale simply because a platform issued a statement.
What becomes your basis
Basis is the amount you will compare with proceeds or value received when those units are later disposed of. If you bought units in separate lots at different prices, each lot can have a different basis and holding period. Preserve lot-level information rather than relying on an account’s single average price unless the applicable rules and records support that method.
What happens when you sell crypto for dollars?
When you sell a digital asset held as a capital asset, calculate the result by subtracting adjusted basis from the amount realized. A positive difference is generally a capital gain; a negative difference is generally a capital loss. The tax rate depends on your broader tax circumstances.
Holding period matters. A capital asset held one year or less before disposition generally produces short-term gain or loss. Holding it more than one year generally produces long-term gain or loss. Keep the acquisition and disposition dates for the specific units sold; an account-wide date is not enough when lots differ.

Capital-asset dispositions are generally reported on Form 8949 and summarized on Schedule D (Form 1040), as applicable. The IRS requires reporting digital-asset transactions whether or not the transaction produces a taxable gain or loss.
Is swapping one cryptocurrency for another taxable?
Yes, generally. A crypto-to-crypto exchange is treated as a disposition of the asset you give up and an acquisition of the asset you receive. The fact that no dollars entered your bank account does not by itself make the trade tax-free.
Use contemporaneous U.S.-dollar fair-market values for the exchange and retain the transaction timestamp, quantities, fees and basis information. The newer IRS digital-asset FAQs contain more specific rules for transaction costs and basis in assets received in exchanges, so avoid applying one simplified fee formula to every kind of swap. The asset received starts a new lot with its own acquisition date and basis under the applicable rules.

Using cryptocurrency to pay for merchandise, a meal, rent or another service can be a disposition of the crypto. Measure the value received, identify the units spent and compare that value with the units’ adjusted basis. Keep the payment timestamp, merchant record and blockchain transaction data.

If you receive crypto for performing services, that is a different event. The fair-market value at receipt is generally income. If you later sell, swap or spend those units, calculate a separate gain or loss from the value that was included at receipt to the later disposition value.
Do I owe tax if I move crypto between wallets?
A transfer between wallets, addresses or accounts belonging to the same taxpayer is generally non-taxable. It is still important to document it because a receiving platform or information statement may otherwise make the movement look like a sale.
Save the sending and receiving wallet or account identifiers, transaction hash, date, quantity and evidence that both sides belong to you. A transfer that changes ownership is not automatically covered by the same-owner rule. Also examine any network or platform fee paid in digital assets: spending crypto for a fee may itself be a disposition, even when the principal transfer is not taxable.
How do I calculate crypto cost basis and identify the units?
Basis calculations require a complete chain from acquisition or receipt to disposition. For each lot, retain acquisition date and time, units, dollar basis, acquisition fair-market value where relevant, and associated costs. At disposition, record date and time, units removed, dollar value, proceeds and allocable transaction costs.

Transactions before 2025
The IRS’s older FAQs generally apply to transactions completed before January 1, 2025. They describe selecting particular units when you can specifically identify them and substantiate their basis. If you cannot identify units, those FAQs describe chronological first-in, first-out treatment. Do not assume that an identification made after the transaction can fix missing contemporaneous records.
Transactions from 2025 onward
For 2025 and later, use the newer IRS digital-asset guidance and regulations applicable to the custody arrangement. Specific-identification requirements differ between self-custody and broker custody.
| Situation | What the current guidance emphasizes |
|---|---|
| Unhosted or self-custodied wallet | Timely book-and-record identification plus records showing removal of the identified units |
| Broker or custodial account | Identification requirements that involve communicating the selection to the broker |
| No supported identification | Do not carry an older universal or multi-wallet method into a current transaction without checking the applicable rule |
Keep proof of which units left the wallet or account. A spreadsheet that lists only a sale total, without lot evidence, may not substantiate a claimed specific identification.
How Form 1099-DA changes the filing process
The IRS requires reporting relevant income, gains and losses whether or not you receive an information return. Form 1099-DA is an information statement from certain brokers; it is not a substitute for your records and its gross-proceeds figure is not automatically your taxable gain.

2025 transactions
Brokers generally report gross proceeds for transactions effected on or after January 1, 2025. The IRS’s 2026 filing-season reminder says most Forms 1099-DA for 2025 transactions will not include basis. You may therefore need to reconstruct basis from purchase confirmations, wallet histories and other records before completing Form 8949 and Schedule D.
Transactions on or after January 1, 2026
For sales on or after January 1, 2026, brokers generally have mandatory basis-reporting duties for covered digital assets. Rules differ for noncovered assets and optional reporting categories, so a form that contains basis is still something to reconcile against your own lot records.
Which brokers are covered
Form 1099-DA applies to certain brokers that take possession of the digital assets being sold, including custodial platforms and certain hosted-wallet providers, kiosks and payment processors. Final regulations do not require reporting by decentralized or noncustodial brokers that do not take possession. A reporting exception does not establish that you have no tax obligation.
A recordkeeping system that can survive filing season
Maintain one unified, exportable ledger rather than separate uncoordinated files for each wallet. Reconcile it to every broker statement and to your bank records.
- Capture every event: acquisitions, receipts, sales, swaps, payments, fees and transfers.
- Store asset details: token type, quantity, wallet or account, and transaction identifier.
- Preserve time and value: date, time and time zone when available, plus the U.S.-dollar fair-market value and how it was determined.
- Track basis and proceeds: acquisition cost and fees, disposition value or proceeds, and allocable transaction costs.
- Document ownership transfers: link withdrawals and deposits between wallets you own with identifiers and evidence of common ownership.
- Save identification instructions: retain the instruction sent to a broker or the timely records supporting self-custody lot selection.
- Reconcile forms: keep Forms 1099-DA and other statements, then compare their proceeds and transaction dates with your ledger.
Filing workflow for a typical capital-asset investor
- Separate purchases, receipts, dispositions, fees and same-owner transfers in your transaction history.
- For each disposition, determine which units left, their adjusted basis and holding period under the rules for that tax year and custody type.
- Calculate amount realized or value received in U.S. dollars and subtract adjusted basis.
- Report capital-asset dispositions on Form 8949 and summarize them on Schedule D, as applicable.
- Investigate discrepancies between your records and any Form 1099-DA; do not copy a gross-proceeds amount into a gain field without calculating basis.
- Retain the underlying records with your tax return documentation.
Situations that need transaction-specific advice
The rules above do not by themselves resolve DeFi activity, liquidity pools, staking, lending, wrapped assets, NFTs, gifts, losses, business or inventory activity, compensation arrangements, estate or trust ownership, or transactions spanning multiple jurisdictions. Those situations can involve income, property exchanges, reporting forms and valuation questions that differ from a straightforward capital-asset sale. Use the transaction-specific IRS guidance and a qualified tax professional when the facts do not fit the ordinary buy, sell, swap, spend or same-owner transfer pattern.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- A dollar purchase normally creates basis but is not itself a taxable disposition.
- Selling, swapping or spending crypto can create gain or loss even when no dollars are received.
- Same-owner wallet transfers are generally non-taxable, while crypto-paid fees may require separate treatment.
- For 2025, most Forms 1099-DA show proceeds without basis, so your own lot records remain essential.
- Unit-identification rules depend on the transaction year, custody arrangement and timely supporting records.
