Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor U.S. individuals who hold crypto as a capital asset, selling for less than your adjusted basis generally creates a realized capital loss. The loss is calculated in U.S. dollars as your amount realized minus adjusted basis. You generally report the disposition on Form 8949 and carry the result to Schedule D, but capital-loss deduction limits mean the entire loss may not be usable in the same tax year. A price decline alone is not a deductible loss; you generally must sell, exchange, spend, or otherwise dispose of the asset.
This explanation covers general U.S. federal treatment for personal investment holdings. Business inventory, dealer activity, specialized tokens, state taxes, non-U.S. taxpayers, and unusual securities can require different analysis. It is general information, not individualized tax advice.

What happens when you sell crypto at a loss?
The Internal Revenue Service treats digital assets as property. When capital-asset crypto is disposed of for less than its adjusted basis, the transaction generally produces a capital loss. The loss is realized on the transaction date, not when the market price merely falls while you continue to hold the asset.

The IRS states in its digital-asset filing guidance that taxpayers must keep enough records to substantiate positions taken on their federal returns. That makes the tax result depend on the particular units sold, their acquisition dates, their basis, and the proceeds and costs of the disposition.

Unrealized loss versus realized loss
- Unrealized loss: Your crypto is worth less than you paid, but you still hold it. There is generally no capital loss to report yet.
- Realized loss: You sell, exchange, spend, or otherwise dispose of the crypto for less than its adjusted basis. The difference is generally a reportable capital loss.
How to calculate a crypto loss
The core calculation is:
Amount realized − adjusted basis = capital gain or loss
A negative result is a loss. Convert each amount to U.S. dollars using the fair market value applicable to the transaction.
Amount realized
For a cash sale, amount realized starts with the cash you receive. Current IRS FAQ guidance also says it includes the fair market value of services received to effect the sale. It is reduced by digital-asset transaction costs allocable to the disposition. Those costs can include transaction or gas fees, transfer taxes, and commissions paid for another party’s services to complete the purchase, sale, or disposition.

Fees for moving assets between wallets you own are not treated as digital-asset transaction costs under that FAQ. Do not automatically subtract every wallet or network charge from sale proceeds; identify whether the cost was incurred to effect the disposition.
Adjusted basis
Basis generally starts with what you paid for the units, measured in U.S. dollars. For purchased virtual currency, IRS FAQ guidance expressly includes acquisition fees, commissions, and other acquisition costs in basis. Basis can also be affected by other adjustments, so use transaction-level records rather than an exchange’s headline gain-and-loss number when history is incomplete.

Arithmetic example
Suppose the units sold have an adjusted basis of $1,000. You receive $715 and pay $15 of selling costs allocable to the disposition. Your amount realized is $700, so the realized loss is $700 − $1,000, or $300. This is a hypothetical arithmetic example, not an IRS example.
Short-term and long-term crypto losses
Your holding period determines whether the capital loss is short-term or long-term. The period starts the day after you acquire the units and ends on the date of the sale or exchange.
| Holding period for the units sold | Classification | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| One year or less | Short-term capital loss | Reported in the short-term section of the capital-gain and loss forms and netted under the applicable capital-loss rules. |
| More than one year | Long-term capital loss | Reported in the long-term section and netted separately before the overall capital result is determined. |
Use the acquisition date of the specific units disposed of. If a transaction includes lots acquired on different dates, one sale can contain both short-term and long-term portions.
Do you have to report crypto if you sold at a loss?
Generally, yes. A deductible result is not created simply by omitting a losing transaction. For capital-asset digital assets disposed of through a sale, exchange, or another disposition, IRS filing guidance directs taxpayers to Form 8949 for the relevant tax year. The totals generally flow to Schedule D.
Keep the transaction even if the loss does not produce an immediate tax benefit. Capital-loss limitations can restrict how much is currently deductible, and unused amounts may be governed by carryforward rules. The allowable result is determined after the required netting and limitation steps; a realized loss does not automatically mean a refund or a dollar-for-dollar reduction of your tax bill.

What counts as a disposition?
- Selling crypto for U.S. dollars or similar currency.
- Exchanging one digital asset for another.
- Using crypto to pay for goods or services.
- Other transactions that transfer the asset in a taxable disposition.
A transfer between your own wallets is generally not a sale or exchange merely because the wallet addresses differ. Preserve the transfer record so you can connect the same units and basis to the eventual disposition.
How to report the loss on Form 8949
- Gather the lot data. Record the asset, units, acquisition date, acquisition cost, fees included in basis, disposition date, proceeds, and allocable selling costs.
- Determine the units sold. Match the disposition to identified units or the applicable default ordering rule when identification is not adequate.
- Calculate the proceeds and basis in dollars. Apply the amount-realized and adjusted-basis rules to each transaction.
- Separate short-term and long-term transactions. The one-year threshold applies to the units actually disposed of.
- Enter each disposition on Form 8949. Follow the form and instructions for the tax year in which the transaction occurred, including any required adjustment codes.
- Carry the totals to Schedule D. Schedule D combines the Form 8949 results with other capital gains and losses and applies the required netting and limitation framework.
Form names and instructions can change. Use the Form 8949 instructions for the transaction year rather than relying on a prior-year form or a software default.
Which crypto tax rules apply to your transaction date?
Tax treatment follows the date of the transaction, not the date you file the return. IRS legacy virtual-currency FAQs generally apply to transactions completed before January 1, 2025. For later transactions, the IRS points taxpayers to the 2024 regulations and related digital-asset guidance.
| Transaction timing | Practical rule |
|---|---|
| Before January 1, 2025 | Legacy virtual-currency FAQ guidance generally addresses these transactions, together with the law and instructions applicable to that year. |
| January 1, 2025 and later | Use the 2024 regulations and current digital-asset guidance, including the FAQ questions that apply to the transaction. |
| Certain transactions effected on or after January 1, 2026 | Brokers must report basis for specified covered transactions, subject to coverage and transition rules. This does not mean every digital-asset transaction will show basis. |
Why your 2025 broker statement may not show basis
IRS Tax Tip 2026-07 says many statements for 2025 digital-asset transactions may not include basis. You may therefore need to reconstruct basis from your own purchase, transfer, and disposition records. A statement showing proceeds is not proof that its gain or loss calculation includes every lot, fee, wallet transfer, or prior-platform transaction.
The IRS says brokers must report basis on certain transactions effected on or after January 1, 2026, but the requirement has specific coverage and transition rules. Treat broker information as one source of data, then reconcile it to your complete history.

Unit identification: which crypto units did you sell?
Accurate lot identification affects both basis and holding period. The IRS digital-asset FAQ added in December 2025 discusses how to identify particular units and describes a default earliest-acquired-first ordering rule in relevant custodial circumstances when specified units are not adequately identified.
Do not assume you can always choose any lot after the sale, or that an exchange’s tax-lot setting alone satisfies every identification requirement. In some situations, timely records or communication of sufficient identifying information to a broker are required. The applicable answer depends on the wallet, broker, transfer method, custody arrangement, and transaction date.
Records that support identification
- Asset type and, where relevant, the network or token contract.
- Number of units and the date and time acquired and disposed of.
- U.S.-dollar fair market value at acquisition and disposition.
- Purchase confirmations, receipts, sale records, exchange statements, and fee details.
- Wallet addresses, transfer hashes, and records connecting transfers between wallets you control.
- Documentation showing how you identified the units sold or why a default ordering rule applied.
Common mistakes that overstate or understate a loss
Using the market-price drop as the deduction
The taxable loss is based on the actual amount realized and adjusted basis, not the difference between today’s quote and your purchase price while you still hold the asset.
Ignoring fees
Acquisition costs can increase basis, while qualifying disposition costs reduce amount realized. Include only costs allocable under the applicable rules; a fee for transferring crypto between your own wallets is not treated as a disposition cost under the cited IRS FAQ.

Accepting incomplete exchange history
An exchange may not know the basis of assets transferred in from another platform or wallet. Import or retain records from every venue and reconcile duplicate transfers before calculating the loss.

Mixing tax years
Apply guidance based on when the transaction occurred. A return filed in 2026 for a 2025 sale does not turn that sale into a 2026 transaction.
Assuming a loss is fully deductible immediately
Capital-loss limitations apply. Determine the allowable deduction after netting capital gains and losses under the instructions for the return year, and track any amount that cannot be used currently.
Special situations that need additional analysis
The general framework here is not a complete answer for every digital asset. Get advice tailored to your facts if you hold tokens as business inventory, operate as a dealer, receive assets for services, deal with tokenized securities, or have state, foreign, partnership, trust, or other specialized reporting issues.

A practical year-end checklist
- Export complete transaction histories from every exchange, broker, wallet, and payment service.
- Match inbound transfers to prior purchases so they are not mistaken for new acquisitions.
- Include allowable acquisition costs in basis and disposition costs in amount realized.
- Identify the exact units sold and calculate each lot’s holding period.
- Convert proceeds, basis, and fees to U.S. dollars using consistent fair-market-value records.
- Prepare Form 8949 entries and reconcile their totals to Schedule D.
- Compare broker statements with your own records, especially for 2025 transactions that may lack basis.
- Retain the supporting records long enough to substantiate the return position and any carryforward.
The IRS rule in one sentence
In FAQ answer 49, added December 15, 2025, the Internal Revenue Service states: “If you sell digital assets for U.S. dollars or similar currency, you must recognize any capital gain or loss on the sale subject to any limitations on the deductibility of capital losses.”
