Conflict in and around the Gulf can disrupt international sports travel through airspace advisories or restrictions, canceled or rerouted flights, and interruptions at regional hub airports. An event may be held far from the Gulf and still be affected if athletes, officials, broadcasters, staff, or fans connect through a Gulf hub. That travel exposure is separate from whether the event itself can safely proceed.
How disruption can reach an event outside the Gulf
International events rely on connected journeys, not just the airport nearest the venue. A traveler may fly through a Gulf hub such as Dubai (DXB) on the way to or from a tournament held elsewhere. If airspace or airport operations change, the onward journey can be affected even when the event venue is not.

Possible consequences include a canceled or delayed connection, a longer alternative route, missed onward travel, or a need to change departure plans. These are possible mechanisms, not a forecast for any particular flight: effects depend on the current security situation, official advisories, airline decisions, and the itinerary.

In a statement dated 28 February 2026, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said the regional crisis had no direct bearing on the conduct of the Men’s T20 World Cup then underway in India and Sri Lanka. It separately described travel and logistics planning for players, team management, match officials, broadcast teams, and event staff who used Gulf hubs, particularly Dubai, as transit points for journeys home. The ICC said it worked with carriers to identify alternative routings through European, South Asian, and Southeast Asian hubs, and activated security advisories and a travel support desk. What aviation advisories tell travelers
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) maintains a live Conflict Zones Advisories register. It distinguishes Conflict Zone Information Bulletins (CZIBs), which concern airspace identified as high risk, from Information Notes covering medium-risk airspace for relevant operators. An advisory entry is not automatically a ban applying to every airline or flight; airlines make operational decisions, and routes may change.

Several entries showed revisions dated 30 September 2026, with validity dates extending into October or November. This is a dated snapshot of the register, not a prediction about a specific journey. The register can change as conditions change. On 8 July 2026, EASA said a broad Middle East and Persian Gulf bulletin was not extended after expiring that day; it was replaced by a medium-risk Information Note for the Middle East and Persian Gulf and separate high-risk bulletins for Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon. EASA said it would continue to monitor developments. That dated revision shows that assessments can be updated; it does not establish that risk later disappeared. Read EASA’s 8 July update.

What to check before traveling to a match
- Review destination-specific government advice. Check the guidance issued by your own government for your destination and citizenship. For example, UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advice for Qatar, marked current on 27 September 2026, warned of possible cancellations, periodic airspace closures, and disruption. It advised monitoring airport and airspace updates, following local authorities, keeping departure plans under review, and ensuring travel documents are current. Read the UK FCDO Qatar advice.
- Check the route, not only the venue. Note whether your itinerary crosses affected airspace or depends on a Gulf hub, and identify whether alternative connections are available. A route’s exposure is not proof that it will be disrupted.
- Follow airline and airport updates. Recheck operational notices before departure and while traveling. Government advice and aviation bulletins provide context; the carrier and airport provide information about a particular flight or facility.
- Understand your booking options. Review the fare’s change and rebooking terms, connection times, and what to do if a segment is canceled. Schedule flexibility and viable alternatives matter when comparing itineraries, but they do not guarantee a reroute.
- Check insurance wording against your trip. The FCDO advises travelers to research insurance suited to their itinerary, planned activities, and emergency expenses. Policy terms vary; do not assume a policy covers conflict-related cancellation, disruption, or evacuation without confirming the wording with the insurer.
- Keep travel documents current. Follow the applicable government’s document guidance and keep essential trip information accessible.
What cannot be concluded from the available figures
The cited official sources do not establish a total number of sporting events or travelers affected, how often an event will be canceled, or the probability that a future itinerary will be disrupted. The ICC described hub reliance and contingency measures but did not give a count of affected people or flights; EASA’s register lists advisories rather than measuring effects on events or travelers. Treat each journey and event according to current, route-specific information.
