In a Coinbase.com account, Coinbase says it maintains the private keys for the hosted wallet assigned to you. Prime Custody is a specific institutional portfolio type provided through Coinbase Custody Trust Company (CCTC), which Coinbase identifies as a New York Department of Financial Services-regulated qualified custodian. Prime Custody combines custody with trading and financing instead of acting as storage alone.
The distinction matters because “Coinbase account” can also refer informally to products with different custody models. Coinbase Wallet, the separate self-custody app, is not covered by Coinbase’s explanation of Coinbase.com hosted accounts. Prime also includes different portfolio types, including Prime Vault and Prime Trading, with different custody and operating arrangements.

What a regular Coinbase account actually is
Coinbase describes Coinbase.com as a centralized exchange. Assets held there sit in a hosted digital asset wallet assigned to the account, and Coinbase says it maintains the wallet’s private keys. You use Coinbase’s account controls and platform to access, trade or transfer those assets; you do not hold the private keys directly.

That custody description does not mean Coinbase claims ownership of the assets. In its consumer explanation, Coinbase states: “At all times, these assets are yours – they never belong to Coinbase.” The statement applies to Coinbase.com hosted-account assets and should not be generalized to every Coinbase product or to a separate legal question about insolvency, liens or a particular agreement. Read Coinbase’s current explanation at Coinbase’s asset-custody page.

Do not confuse Coinbase.com with Coinbase Wallet
Coinbase’s consumer page expressly excludes the Coinbase Wallet app. That app is a separate self-custody product in which the user, rather than Coinbase.com, is responsible for the wallet’s private keys. Therefore, “regular Coinbase account” should mean a Coinbase.com hosted account in this comparison, not every product that uses the Coinbase name.
What Coinbase Prime adds
Coinbase Prime is an institutional platform for trading, custody, financing and related workflows. It is not simply a retail Coinbase.com login with an upgraded security setting. Prime accounts are organized around an institutional structure:
Rank #2
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Organization: the top-level Prime account.
- Entity: the investment vehicle or business that contracts with Coinbase. One organization can contain multiple entities.
- Portfolio: a pool of assets with trading and vault balances. An entity can have multiple portfolios.
This structure lets an institution separate legal entities, strategies or operating teams. The exact contracting company depends on the Prime product, the institution’s country of incorporation and other business requirements. Coinbase lists U.S. and Luxembourg entities, but eligibility is country-specific; see the current Prime legal-entities information before assuming a particular entity is available.

Prime Custody, Prime Vault and Prime Trading are different
“Coinbase Prime custody” is not a single catch-all label. Coinbase distinguishes several Prime portfolio types.

| Prime option | Custody arrangement | Trading and financing | Wallet structure described by Coinbase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prime Custody | Provided through CCTC, which Coinbase identifies as a qualified custodian. | Trading and financing can occur while assets remain within the qualified custodian. | Omnibus wallet structure described as legally segregated but operationally commingled (LSOC); no per-client on-chain segregation. |
| Prime Vault | Custody-only option. | Assets must be swept out before trading. | Dedicated address. |
| Prime Trading | Not held in CCTC, according to Coinbase’s comparison. | Trading and financing are available. | Custody arrangement differs from Prime Custody; review the applicable agreement. |
Coinbase characterizes Prime Custody this way: “Prime Custody is not a standalone storage product, but a full prime brokerage portfolio type.” That is why it differs from a vault designed solely for safekeeping. The detailed comparison is in Coinbase’s Prime Custody overview.
Key custody differences in practical terms
| Question | Coinbase.com account | Prime Custody or another Prime portfolio |
|---|---|---|
| Who is the service for? | Consumer users of Coinbase.com. | Institutions using an organization, contracting entity and one or more portfolios. |
| Who maintains wallet keys? | Coinbase says it maintains the private keys for the hosted wallet assigned to the account. | Prime Custody is delivered through CCTC as the named qualified custodian. The precise rights and controls come from the Prime agreement and portfolio type. |
| What services are combined? | Consumer-platform holding and use of digital assets. | Prime can combine execution, custody, financing and institutional workflows. Features depend on the portfolio and agreement. |
| Can assets trade without leaving custody? | Trading occurs within the consumer platform’s hosted-wallet model. | Prime Custody supports trading and financing within the qualified custodian; Prime Vault requires a sweep before trading. |
| Is each client’s balance separately visible on-chain? | The cited consumer page describes a hosted wallet but does not specify an institutional wallet design. | Coinbase describes Prime Custody as legally segregated but operationally commingled, with no per-client on-chain segregation. Vault uses a dedicated address. |
| Which legal entity provides the service? | Consumer terms apply to the Coinbase.com service. | The entity can vary with product, incorporation country and business needs. |
Does Prime Custody mean Coinbase holds your crypto?
It means your assets are placed in a custodial arrangement rather than held in a self-custody wallet that you control directly. Prime Custody is provided through CCTC, the entity Coinbase identifies as a qualified custodian. In operational terms, the custodian administers the wallet arrangement and transaction permissions under the governing agreement.

That answer is more precise than saying simply “Coinbase holds your crypto.” Prime has multiple legal entities and portfolio types, and Prime Trading is specifically described as not being held in CCTC. Prime Custody’s omnibus model is also described as legally segregated but operationally commingled: client assets are not assigned a separate on-chain address for every client. “Operationally commingled” does not, by itself, establish that the assets belong to Coinbase or resolve a client’s legal rights in every scenario. Those questions depend on the agreement, applicable law and the relevant entity.
Coinbase says a third-party legal opinion is available to certain clients under a nondisclosure agreement. That availability should not be treated as a public legal ruling for every client, asset or advisory arrangement. If your institution needs a qualified-custodian determination for a regulated mandate, obtain advice for your own facts.

How Prime onboarding differs from opening Coinbase.com
A consumer account is generally centered on an individual login. Prime onboarding is centered on an institution and its legal entities. Before choosing a Prime portfolio, confirm these items in order:
- Identify the contracting institution. Confirm the organization, entity name and country of incorporation that will sign the Prime agreement.
- Choose the portfolio type. Determine whether the need is Prime Custody, Prime Vault, Prime Trading or another available configuration. Do not assume that a vault and a custody portfolio have the same transaction process.
- Map users and permissions. Establish which people can view balances, approve transfers, trade or manage security settings. Prime’s organization/entity/portfolio hierarchy is intended to support these institutional separations.
- Confirm custody mechanics. Ask whether assets remain at CCTC, whether the wallet is the LSOC omnibus structure or a dedicated Vault address, and what approvals are required for withdrawals and sweeps.
- Verify assets and jurisdictions. Check the live supported-asset list for the exact custody entity and location of the client, rather than relying on a platform-wide count.
- Review the agreement and fees. The reviewed Coinbase materials do not provide a directly comparable Prime-versus-consumer fee schedule. Obtain the applicable Prime pricing, custody terms, financing terms and withdrawal conditions from the current agreement.
Supported assets are not identical for every Prime client
Coinbase reports more than 275 digital assets and more than 340 trading pairs for Prime. Those figures come from Coinbase’s supported-assets page, whose unrestricted list was last updated in Q3 2026. They are platform-level figures, not a promise that every asset is available to every institution.
Coinbase warns that availability can vary by geography and custody entity. An asset may therefore appear on a general list while being unavailable to a particular client, portfolio or jurisdiction. Check the live Prime supported-cryptocurrency and trading-pair list during onboarding and before committing to a strategy.
Security controls do not change the custody model
Institutional users may be offered stronger authentication and approval controls than a typical consumer account. Coinbase’s institutional onboarding index includes guidance on registering a YubiKey hardware security key and comparing USB-A and USB-C connectors. A hardware key can reduce account-takeover risk when configured correctly, but it does not turn a custodial account into self-custody and is not evidence that the user controls the underlying private keys. Confirm the required connector, recovery process and administrator policy for your organization before purchasing or registering a key. See the institutional onboarding resources.
Which arrangement fits which need?
Use a Coinbase.com account when
- You are using Coinbase as an individual on its consumer platform.
- You need ordinary hosted-wallet access rather than institutional entity and portfolio controls.
- You understand that Coinbase maintains the private keys for the hosted wallet.
Consider Prime Custody when
- An institution needs custody, execution and financing in one institutional workflow.
- The institution’s requirements call for assets to remain within the qualified-custodian structure while trading or financing occurs.
- Separate organizations, entities, portfolios and approval roles are useful.
Consider Prime Vault when
- The priority is custody-only storage with a dedicated address.
- The institution can tolerate sweeping assets out before trading.
Examine Prime Trading separately when
- Trading and financing are required but the assets will not be held in CCTC under the arrangement Coinbase describes.
- The institution needs to compare the legal entity, wallet controls and protections in the specific Prime Trading agreement.
Questions to settle before signing
- Which Coinbase legal entity will contract with the institution, and is it eligible in the institution’s country?
- Is the selected portfolio Prime Custody, Prime Vault, Prime Trading or another configuration?
- For Prime Custody, how are legal segregation, operational commingling and transaction approvals described in the agreement?
- Which assets and trading pairs are enabled for this entity, geography and portfolio today?
- Can the portfolio trade and finance without a custody sweep, or are transfers required first?
- What are the custody, trading, financing, withdrawal and account-termination fees?
- What security-key, administrator and recovery requirements apply to the institution’s users?
- Which terms govern insolvency, liens, forks, staking, unsupported assets and transfer delays?
The essential distinction is therefore not “basic Coinbase versus premium Coinbase.” Coinbase.com is a consumer hosted-wallet service. Coinbase Prime is an institutional framework, and Prime Custody is one portfolio type within it—custody through CCTC combined with trading and financing—while Prime Vault and Prime Trading follow different rules. The correct choice depends on the contracting entity, jurisdiction, required assets, transaction workflow and the terms your institution actually signs.
