Co-signing can change both your credit profile and your ability to qualify for future borrowing. The account may appear on your credit reports, the application may create a hard inquiry, and the payment history can help or hurt your score. A lender may also count the cosigned payment in your debt-to-income ratio (DTI), even when the other borrower is making every payment.
Most importantly, co-signing is a legal repayment obligation. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) states: “If you co-sign a loan, you’re legally obligated to repay the loan if the primary borrower is unable to.” Before signing, evaluate the payment as if you might have to make it yourself and confirm exactly how the lender will report and underwrite the account.

What co-signing means for your finances
A co-signer supports another applicant’s loan application by promising to repay the debt if the primary borrower does not. A co-signer generally does not receive the loan proceeds or become the owner of the financed asset merely by signing, although the contract controls the exact rights and responsibilities.
For an auto loan, CFPB guidance says the lender may pursue the co-signer for the debt, late fees, and collection costs if the borrower fails to pay. The creditor may be able to seek payment from the co-signer without first exhausting collection efforts against the borrower. Those examples come from CFPB’s auto-loan guidance, last reviewed September 12, 2023; your own agreement and applicable law may differ.

How a cosigned account can affect your credit score
The exact score change cannot be predicted. It depends on what the lender reports, the scoring model, and the rest of your credit file. Experian’s May 22, 2026 guidance identifies several ways the account can affect a co-signer.
| Credit-file event | Possible effect | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Application for the loan | A hard inquiry may cause a short-term score impact. | The size and duration depend on your existing file and scoring model. |
| New account opening | The account can change your average age of accounts. | A younger average age may affect a score, but the result varies by file. |
| On-time payments | Positive payment history may strengthen your credit record. | This benefit occurs only when payments are made and reported as agreed. |
| Late or missed payments | Delinquencies may be reported and lower your score. | CFPB specifically warns that missed auto-loan payments may appear on a co-signer’s reports. |
| Repossession or collection | Serious delinquency can cause substantial credit damage. | Consequences depend on the account, reporting practices, and collection circumstances. |
The inquiry and account-age effects
When the borrower applies, the lender may pull your credit as part of underwriting. That hard inquiry can produce a temporary score effect. If the loan is opened, the new account also becomes part of the age calculations used by some scoring models. Neither event guarantees a particular number of points gained or lost.
Payment history is usually the largest ongoing risk
The primary borrower’s behavior matters even if you never use the loan proceeds, drive the vehicle, or control the account. Payments made on time can add positive history. A missed payment can be reported against you, and the damage can become more severe if the account reaches repossession or collection.
Do not assume you will receive an early warning. Ask the lender how it will notify you about a missed payment and whether you can obtain statements or online account access. CFPB recommends arranging that visibility before signing.

How co-signing can change your debt-to-income ratio
DTI compares monthly debt payments with gross monthly income. Gross income means income before taxes and other deductions. The basic calculation is:
DTI = total monthly debt payments ÷ gross monthly income × 100

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When you apply for another loan, the new lender may include the monthly payment on the cosigned account in your obligations. Some lenders may count the full payment; others may apply product-specific rules or accept documentation showing that someone else has made the payments. There is no single treatment for every lender or loan type, so ask the next lender before assuming the debt will be excluded.
CFPB’s illustrative calculation
CFPB’s DTI guidance, last reviewed August 28, 2023, gives this example: a $1,500 mortgage payment, a $100 auto-loan payment, and $400 in other monthly debts total $2,000. With $6,000 of gross monthly income, the DTI is 33% ($2,000 ÷ $6,000). This is an arithmetic illustration, not a statistic about co-signers and not a universal approval limit.
Estimating the possible effect before you sign
- List your current monthly debt payments, including housing, installment loans, minimum credit-card payments, and other obligations the prospective lender uses.
- Add the proposed cosigned payment as a conservative estimate.
- Divide the resulting total by your gross monthly income.
- Ask the lender for its written treatment of the cosigned debt, including whether it counts the full payment and what proof of payment it accepts.
This estimate shows how much capacity the obligation could consume. The lender’s underwriting rules, documentation requirements, and loan-product standards determine the final calculation.

There is no universal DTI cutoff
CFPB says DTI limits vary by loan product and lender. A ratio that works for one application may not qualify for another, and a lender may consider income stability, credit history, reserves, collateral, and other factors in addition to DTI.
Recommended Free Tools
Experian’s March 13, 2024 discussion provides general context for cosigner qualification and DTI expectations, but those observations are not universal standards. Treat any advertised percentage as a lender-specific guideline rather than a guarantee of approval.
Questions to answer before co-signing
Can I afford the payment if the borrower stops paying?
Build a budget that includes the entire monthly payment, insurance or other required charges where applicable, and a reserve for unexpected costs. CFPB recommends judging the decision as though you will have to make the payments yourself. If that scenario would strain rent, mortgage, utilities, emergency savings, or existing debt payments, co-signing creates a risk you may not be able to absorb.
Will the account be reported to my credit bureaus?
Ask whether the account, payment history, balance, and any delinquency will be furnished under your name. Reporting practices can vary by lender and account type. Also ask whether the application will generate a hard inquiry on your reports.
How will I monitor the loan?
Obtain a copy of the agreement and arrange statements or online access if available. Establish who will confirm that each payment posted and how quickly you will be told about a late payment. Do not rely solely on the borrower’s assurance that everything is current.

How can the obligation end?
Before signing, ask whether the contract permits a co-signer release, what conditions apply, and whether the borrower could refinance into a loan without you. A payoff may also end the debt, but these outcomes are contract- and lender-specific. Do not assume that a release is automatic after a certain number of on-time payments.
Comparing the main decision dimensions
| Decision dimension | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Legal responsibility | Whether you are jointly responsible, what fees may be charged, and how the lender can pursue payment. | You may have to pay the full debt if the borrower cannot. |
| Credit-file treatment | Whether the account and inquiry will be reported and how payment history will be furnished. | Payments and delinquencies can affect your score. |
| Borrowing capacity | Whether a future lender counts the full payment, a portion, or another amount in DTI, and what documents it accepts. | The obligation may reduce the amount of new credit you can qualify for. |
| Monitoring | How you receive statements, account access, and missed-payment notices. | Earlier visibility gives you more time to address a problem before it worsens. |
| Exit options | Release, refinance, payoff, and the conditions for each. | You need a realistic path to end the obligation rather than an informal promise. |
What happens if the borrower misses a payment
- Confirm the status immediately. Use the account access or statement process you arranged. Determine the amount overdue, due date, and any grace period.
- Contact the borrower and lender. Clarify whether the issue is a processing error, temporary shortfall, or continuing inability to pay.
- Protect your credit and legal position. If necessary, make a payment to prevent further delinquency, but keep records and understand that paying does not automatically release you from future liability.
- Request written information. Ask the lender for the account balance, fees, reporting status, and available hardship or workout options.
- Review your own borrowing plans. Tell any lender considering your application about the obligation and ask how it will be counted in DTI.
A late payment, repossession, or collection may be reported on your credit file even when the borrower had possession of the asset. The timing and severity depend on the lender’s reporting and the account’s status.
Common misconceptions and safer alternatives
“I am only helping with the application.”
Co-signing is more than a character reference. It is a repayment promise that can be enforced under the loan agreement.
“The debt cannot affect me because I will not use the money.”
Credit reporting and DTI treatment are tied to your legal obligation, not to whether you received the funds or used the asset.

“A good credit score guarantees approval later.”
Even with strong credit, a lender may count the payment in DTI and reach a different underwriting decision. There is no universal ratio or score threshold that guarantees approval.
If the goal is to help someone qualify, discuss alternatives that do not make you a direct co-signer, such as delaying the purchase to build savings, reducing the loan amount, adding a larger down payment, or finding a product whose requirements the borrower can meet independently. The appropriate option depends on the borrower’s circumstances and the lender’s terms.
A practical co-signing checklist
- Read the complete promissory note, guarantee, advisory notice, and fee provisions.
- Calculate your budget with the full payment included.
- Ask whether the lender reports the account and hard inquiry to your credit bureaus.
- Ask how a future lender is likely to treat the payment in DTI and what documentation could change that treatment.
- Arrange statements, online access, and a clear missed-payment notification process.
- Agree in writing with the borrower about who pays, how you are reimbursed, and what happens if income changes.
- Identify realistic release, refinance, or payoff conditions before signing.
- Keep copies of every document and payment record.
When co-signing may be an unacceptable risk
Decline when you could not make the payment without missing your own obligations, when the borrower will not share account information, when the lender will not explain reporting or release terms, or when adding the payment would jeopardize a planned mortgage, student loan, or other major application. A family relationship or promise to reimburse you does not change the lender’s rights.
For a decision involving significant money, review the contract with a qualified attorney or housing, auto, or credit counselor who understands the applicable jurisdiction. State law, loan type, reporting practices, and contract language can change the result.
