The right satellite-imagery provider is the one that can reliably show the change you need at each site, on the schedule your operation requires, and under a license your business can use. Start with the feature to be detected—such as construction progress, vegetation stress, water movement or mining activity—then compare usable resolution, observation cadence, sensor type, geographic coverage, tasking certainty, delivery workflow, rights and total cost. A product’s headline resolution or revisit claim is not enough; ask each provider to assess your actual locations and observation plan.
Start with the monitoring decision, not a satellite catalog
Write a one-sentence monitoring requirement before contacting providers. Include the sites, the change to detect, the smallest feature that matters, how quickly a change must be reported and who will use the result. “Monitor construction” is too broad; “identify whether foundations have advanced at 20 sites every two weeks” gives a provider something measurable to assess.

Define the detectable feature
- Construction and facilities: new structures, cleared ground, roof changes, stockpiles, road work or equipment staging.
- Vegetation: broad stress patterns, clearing, crop development or canopy loss.
- Water: changing reservoirs, flood extent, sediment or shoreline movement.
- Mining and industrial activity: pit expansion, tailings, haul roads, storage areas or other surface changes.
The feature’s size and contrast determine the practical resolution. Broad land-cover change may be visible in medium-resolution imagery, while small assets or narrow linear features require finer detail. Request a sample assessment over your own sites rather than assuming a published product specification guarantees detection.

Match spatial and spectral detail to the question
Spatial resolution describes the ground size represented by each pixel. Finer resolution can reveal smaller objects, but it generally costs more and may reduce the area covered per scene. Spectral information describes the wavelengths recorded. Multispectral bands can support vegetation, water or material analysis that ordinary visible imagery cannot.

Ask for the minimum resolution that answers the business question, not the finest number available. Paying for 30-centimeter imagery does not help if the decision concerns a landscape-scale trend; conversely, a 1.5-meter product may miss a narrow structure or small equipment pad.
Plan cadence around usable observations
Revisit rate is the interval at which a satellite may collect imagery. The interval you can actually use is longer when clouds, smoke, viewing geometry, daylight, collection conflicts or tasking limits prevent a suitable scene.
Choose archive, tasking or an ongoing service
- Archive search: appropriate when historical scenes answer the question or when exact capture dates are flexible.
- New tasking: appropriate when you need a future collection in a defined time window, a particular viewing angle or a resolution not available in the archive.
- Recurring monitoring: appropriate when alerts, scheduled collections and consistent processing are operational requirements.
Planet describes PlanetScope as providing daily global land coverage and lists a 3.7-meter product, while its displayed SkySat and Pelican details are in the 50-centimeter class. Planet also describes sub-daily SkySat tasking and a global imagery archive. These are vendor-stated product descriptions; confirm expected usable observations for each site and contract.

Choose optical, SAR or both

Airbus states that its optical collection depends on daylight and clear skies, while its SAR missions support all-weather, day-and-night access. That does not make SAR universally better: require a demonstration that the radar product or analysis answers your operational question. Some programs combine optical and SAR so a cloudy period does not stop monitoring, but the added data and processing affect cost.

Check product classes and provider fit
Published resolution classes help create a shortlist, not a final ranking. Airbus lists Pléiades Neo at 30 centimeters, Pléiades at 50 centimeters, Vision-1 at 90 centimeters, SPOT at 1.5 meters and TerraSAR-X, TanDEM-X and PAZ radar at 25 centimeters. Airbus describes OneAtlas as an access point for archive imagery, tasking and streaming into mapping software.
Planet’s stated profiles include 3.7-meter PlanetScope and 50-centimeter-class SkySat and Pelican products, along with daily PlanetScope global land coverage and sub-daily SkySat tasking. Verify whether the named product, processing level and tasking option are available over every location in your contract.
Vantor/Maxar documentation describes an area-of-interest monitoring API that alerts users when qualifying new data is available for ordering. Its examples cover notification-only workflows and automatic ordering. WorldView 2D tasking allows a requested collection in a time window with parameters such as resolution.
SkyFi describes a multi-provider platform for archive search, ordering and tasking, recurring campaigns, analytics, APIs and cloud delivery. Its platform page lists optical, SAR, multispectral, hyperspectral, thermal, stereo and aerial sources. It also states that it brings together more than 300 satellite and aerial sources and 40-plus partners, with a standard delivery claim of under 24 hours. Those are current vendor-stated platform metrics, not independent performance measurements. For a marketplace, evaluate the underlying sensor, license, support and service level for each ordered product.
Verify geographic and tasking constraints
Before comparing prices, confirm that every provider can cover your sites and accept your area-of-interest geometry. Ask these questions in writing:

- Are all sites within the provider’s collection and distribution region?
- What minimum and maximum area, polygon shape or scene size applies?
- What collection window and viewing-angle limits apply?
- Is an acquisition guaranteed, prioritized or best effort?
- What cloud threshold, sun angle or incidence-angle rule determines acceptance?
- What happens when the provider cannot collect a usable scene?
Constraints are product-specific. For example, the Vantor/Maxar WorldView 2D tasking guide specifies a minimum tasking order of 50 square kilometers and a maximum of 1,000 square kilometers. It also says usage estimates depend on tasking tier and resolution. Do not apply those limits to other products without confirmation.
Compare providers on an equivalent monitoring plan

Use the same sites, dates, resolution target and cloud threshold in every request for proposal. A low per-scene price can become expensive when a plan needs more sites, repeat attempts, analytics, storage or human interpretation.
Design delivery around the team that will act
Decide whether users need downloadable scenes, a GIS layer, an alert, a dashboard, an analysis-ready raster or a machine-readable result. Verify coordinate reference systems, metadata, cloud masks, processing corrections and naming conventions before signing.
SkyFi describes access through web and mobile interfaces, APIs and webhooks, with delivery to Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage or Azure Blob. Airbus describes OneAtlas archive access, tasking and streaming into mapping software. Planet describes APIs for workflow integration. Treat these as capabilities to validate in a pilot: confirm authentication, rate limits, latency, file formats and whether alerts contain enough information to trigger an operational decision.

- Number and size of monitored sites or AOIs.
- Required observation frequency and acceptable cloud threshold.
- Archive searches, tasking fees and any priority tier.
- Spatial and spectral product choice.
- Processing, orthorectification, mosaics and analytics.
- API, webhook, dashboard, storage and cloud-egress charges.
- Human review, interpretation or change-detection services.
- Support, minimum commitments, overage rates and cancellation terms.
Vantor/Maxar states that tasking estimates depend on tier and resolution. SkyFi describes per-area archive pricing and on-demand access. Neither figure can be treated as a comparable market rate for another provider. Require a written quote that identifies one-time, recurring and usage-based charges.
Account for the value of a missed observation
If a missed collection delays a construction decision, compliance response or damage assessment, include that operational cost in the comparison. A lower-priced service with unreliable usable cadence may cost more than a higher-priced plan that consistently meets the decision window. Ask providers to report attempted, successful and rejected collections separately.

Confirm who may access the raw imagery, derived analytics and exported maps. The contract should address internal departments, contractors, lenders, insurers, regulators, customers, public reports, retention periods and deletion. The available evidence does not establish comparable license schedules across providers, so request written terms rather than assuming that a business subscription permits external sharing.
Also ask whether a model trained on the imagery, a change-detection layer or a dashboard screenshot is treated as a derivative product. Clarify whether archived scenes can be retained after cancellation and whether the provider can use your AOIs or derived outputs for its own purposes.

- Select representative sites: include clear and cloudy locations, dense and sparse targets, and the hardest geometry in your portfolio.
- Define acceptance tests: specify the smallest change, maximum reporting delay, cloud threshold, positional accuracy and required output format.
- Order comparable samples: use the same dates or time windows and document whether each scene came from archive or tasking.
- Test the workflow: ingest files or alerts into the intended GIS, data platform or ticketing process; measure delivery time and manual effort.
- Record failures: note cloud blockage, missed tasking, unusable angles, missing metadata, API errors and license restrictions.
- Scale only after acceptance: negotiate volume, service levels and replacement rules using the measured workload.
Common selection mistakes and fixes
Buying the finest resolution by default
Fix: demonstrate the smallest feature that must be detected and purchase the least expensive product that passes the acceptance test.

Confusing theoretical revisit with usable cadence
Fix: obtain site-level estimates that account for clouds, daylight, geometry and failed collections.
Using optical imagery in a persistently cloudy workflow
Fix: test SAR or a mixed-sensor plan, and verify that analysts can interpret the result.
Ignoring AOI minimums and collection windows
Fix: submit actual polygons and dates before comparing quotes. Product-specific limits can make a nominally suitable service impractical.

Fix: document the satellite, processing level, rights, support path and replacement policy for every product in the order.
Underestimating integration work
Fix: pilot APIs, webhooks, cloud delivery, metadata and authentication with production-like data.
A practical decision rule
Keep a provider on the shortlist only if it passes four gates: it can detect the defined feature; it can deliver enough usable observations at the actual sites; it fits the required workflow and license; and its complete recurring cost fits the business case. When several providers pass, select on service-level certainty, analyst support and integration effort rather than headline resolution alone.
