AI spending can lift stock valuations when investors expect it to generate future revenue, improve margins or create durable competitive advantages—but spending alone is not proof that those returns will arrive. It can also weigh on a company’s value through financing needs, operating costs and depreciation. The key question is whether the expected additional cash flow is large and reliable enough to justify the investment, given interest rates and the risks involved.
How does AI spending affect stock valuations?
Investors value a company partly by estimating the cash it may generate in the future and discounting that cash back to today. AI spending affects both sides of that calculation: it can change expectations for future earnings, and it can change the costs and risks investors apply when valuing those earnings.

The European Central Bank (ECB) describes higher valuations as potentially supported by higher earnings expectations, lower discount rates and lower risk premia. In its analysis, strong realised and expected earnings linked to the AI boom have supported U.S. equity valuations in recent years. Those are interacting forces, not proof that every company investing in AI will benefit.
The earnings channel
Spending on accelerators, networking, data centres and software may help a company sell AI services, improve existing products, automate work or defend its competitive position. If investors expect these effects to produce durable incremental cash flow, they may be willing to pay more for the company today.

But expenditure is a cost before it is a return. Infrastructure has to be built, powered and maintained; equipment loses value over time; and a company may need to fund the project with cash, borrowing or new shares. A project can increase revenue and still fail to create value if its operating and financing costs, depreciation and other required investment exceed the cash it adds.
The discounting channel
Expected future earnings are worth less today when investors demand a higher return to hold risky assets or when interest rates raise the discount rate. Conversely, lower discount rates or a lower perceived equity risk premium can support higher present-day valuations even without an immediate change in reported earnings.

This helps explain why an AI-related share price can move even when the company has not yet reported a corresponding change in profit: investors may have revised their expectations about future earnings, financing conditions or the probability that the investment will pay off.
Does a large AI capex figure mean a company is investing only in AI?
No. Capital expenditure (capex) is an imperfect proxy for AI investment: reported property-and-equipment totals can include projects unrelated to AI, while leased capacity may not appear in the same totals. A headline capex number is evidence of broad infrastructure investment, not a clean measure of dollars spent exclusively on AI.
A 2026 analysis by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System reported that Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft and Oracle together spent $131 billion in capital expenditure in the fourth quarter of 2025 and $412 billion over 2025. The annual total represented about 1.31% of U.S. gross domestic product. These figures exclude leases and include some non-AI property and equipment.
The scale matters because it indicates that a small group of large companies is committing substantial resources to infrastructure. But it does not establish how much of that investment is AI-specific, how much capacity will be used, or whether customers will pay enough for the resulting services. Lease exposure can also make comparisons based only on reported capex incomplete.

Are businesses and investors adopting the same view of AI?
Survey evidence points to investor enthusiasm, while business adoption figures help test whether that enthusiasm is translating into use. Neither measure alone establishes that AI is producing profits at scale.
Business adoption is growing, but not universal
Federal Reserve accessible data using the U.S. Census Bureau’s Business Trends and Outlook Survey (BTOS) indicated that about 18% of U.S. businesses were using AI and 21% planned to adopt it at year-end 2025. The BTOS question was revised in November 2025 to cover AI use in any business function, so comparisons with earlier figures should account for the changed wording.
Adoption can support the investment case if businesses use AI in ways that raise output, reduce costs or generate revenue. A reported intention to adopt is not the same as sustained use, measurable productivity improvement or a customer willing to pay more. Investors need evidence of that progression in company results, not just reports of adoption interest.
Investors have encouraged companies to invest
In PwC’s 2024 Global Investor Survey, 73% of 345 investors and analysts across 24 countries and territories said companies should deploy AI solutions at scale. Within that survey, 42% favoured a moderate increase in investment and 31% a significant increase.

It does, however, help explain why management teams may face pressure to build AI capability even before the financial payoff is fully visible.
Who benefits first when AI spending increases?
Spending can reach different parts of the market at different times. Companies selling hardware, cloud capacity, networking equipment or related services may record revenue as infrastructure is purchased. The companies paying for that capacity may carry costs for longer before they can demonstrate that customers or internal productivity improvements have generated enough incremental cash flow.

This difference in timing matters when comparing supplier earnings with the investment case of a large infrastructure buyer. Near-term demand for equipment can be strong while the eventual profitability of the services built on that equipment remains uncertain. A supplier’s sales growth does not by itself establish that every buyer will earn an attractive return on its infrastructure.
Expectations have also been capitalised in private markets. The Federal Reserve’s 2026 analysis reported that Anthropic raised $44 billion and OpenAI raised $58 billion between 2023 and 2025; their valuations at year-end 2025 were $350 billion and $500 billion, respectively. These private-company figures illustrate how investors can assign value to expected AI growth before it appears as realised earnings at public companies. They are not comparable to public-market share prices in every respect, nor are they proof that the valuations will be sustained.

AI-related market gains have been concentrated among a small number of highly valued firms, which makes broad indexes more sensitive to how investors assess the theme. Concentration also means aggregate spending or market performance can obscure whether returns are spreading across companies and industries.
The Federal Reserve reported that from ChatGPT’s launch to year-end 2025, market capitalisation grew 179% for AMD, 636% for Broadcom and 975% for Nvidia. Together, those companies represented 11.2% of the S&P 500 at year-end 2025. These figures show the scale of market-capitalisation gains and index concentration; they do not establish that AI spending alone caused each company’s stock performance.
A separate Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco analysis found that growth in public-company capital spending and research and development funding had come entirely from the largest companies with positive AI sentiment. That concentration is a reason to distinguish an AI boom among leading firms from widespread gains across the market.
What can make AI-related valuations fall?
Valuations can decline if expected earnings weaken, if the cost of capital rises or if investors see greater risk in the expected returns. A repricing can happen quickly when new information changes assumptions about demand, costs or competitive advantage.

Cheaper models can change the expected economics
On January 27, 2025, after DeepSeek announced a lower-cost model, the S&P 500 information technology sector fell more than 5% in one day and the overall S&P 500 fell 1.5%, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The episode reflected concerns that forecasts for AI-infrastructure earnings might be too high. It illustrates how a development that appears to lower the cost of producing AI can also prompt investors to question the value of existing infrastructure or the durability of suppliers’ margins.
Other sources of disappointment
Weak customer demand, slower adoption, limited productivity gains, regulation, power or equipment constraints, and rising financing costs can all weaken the case for expected returns. Competition can also erode margins even if AI use keeps growing. These risks affect companies differently: an infrastructure supplier, a cloud provider and a business using AI may face different combinations of demand, cost and competitive pressure.
Evidence on sentiment and investment has also changed over time. A 2025 Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis summary reported that before ChatGPT, each net-positive AI-sentiment sentence was associated with 3.1% higher capex and 9.7% higher research and development spending. After ChatGPT, the capex association was no longer statistically significant and the R&D association was about half as large. These are associations from the analysis, not estimates that a sentence of positive sentiment causes a specific spending increase.

Rather than treating a rising capex number as a standalone bullish signal, compare the expected economic return with the resources and risks required to produce it. A company-by-company assessment is more informative than assuming every firm labelled AI-exposed has the same opportunity.
- Revenue and margins: Look for the expected contribution from AI to revenue and operating margins, and distinguish reported results from management projections.
- Investment burden: Examine capex intensity, depreciation schedules and lease exposure. Capex totals may include non-AI projects, while leases can leave obligations outside a simple cash-capex comparison.
- Funding: Consider whether investment is funded from cash flow, debt or equity issuance. Borrowing adds financing costs; issuing shares can dilute existing owners.
- Customer evidence: Assess whether adoption is translating into repeat use, productivity gains, revenue or cost savings—not only announced plans.
- Competitive durability: Consider whether the company can retain customers and margins as model costs, capabilities and competitors change.
- Valuation sensitivity: Ask how the share price might respond to higher interest rates, a larger equity risk premium or lower earnings expectations.
- Concentration and dependencies: Identify exposure to a small number of customers, suppliers or infrastructure bottlenecks, and whether the investment case depends on growth across a narrow group of companies.
The framework connects the earnings and discount-rate forces highlighted by the ECB with the capex measurement limits described by the Federal Reserve and the concentration findings of the San Francisco Fed. It does not produce a single correct valuation; it helps identify which assumptions must hold for a company’s current price to make sense.
What does AI spending mean for an ordinary stock-market investor?
For an investor holding a broad index fund, concentration means AI-related expectations can affect the index even if many constituent companies have little direct exposure to AI infrastructure. For an investor selecting individual stocks, the challenge is to separate a plausible long-term opportunity from the price already paid for that opportunity.

Reported investment is most useful when read alongside evidence of conversion: whether businesses are adopting AI, whether users pay for it, whether the company’s margins improve, and whether those gains persist after depreciation, operating costs and financing. Investors should also account for the possibility that a lower-cost technical alternative may benefit users while putting pressure on the suppliers or infrastructure investments whose returns were previously expected to be high.
Consequently, AI spending can support a higher valuation, but it does not mechanically raise stock prices. The market is pricing an uncertain stream of future cash flows, and both the cash-flow forecast and the risk applied to it can change as adoption, costs, competition and interest rates evolve.
