AI is changing cybersecurity in three directions at once: it can help defenders analyze and respond, give attackers faster ways to create convincing scams, and introduce new attack surfaces inside AI models and agents. The practical answer is not one “AI security” product. Email protection, strong authentication, agent authorization, secure software practices, monitoring and governance each address different failure modes, and none eliminates AI-related cyber risk on its own.
For people managing money, systems or customer data, that distinction matters. A realistic voice message may support payment fraud, while a poorly controlled software agent may expose financial records. Security decisions should therefore start with the threat and the control that can reduce it, rather than with an AI label on a product.

How is AI changing cybersecurity?
AI is reshaping both sides of the security contest and creating a third problem: securing AI itself. NIST’s preliminary Cyber AI Profile organizes the field around “Secure,” “Defend” and “Thwart”—securing AI systems, conducting AI-enabled cyber defense, and countering AI-enabled attacks. The profile is a preliminary draft, not a final standard (NIST IR 8596).
AI as a defensive assistant
Security teams can use machine-learning and generative systems to sort alerts, summarize incidents, search logs, suggest investigations and support detection, response and recovery. NIST describes this as analyst augmentation, not a replacement for staff. Organizations still need to test whether a capability is mature, accurate and safe enough for their environment before relying on it (NIST IR 8596).

AI as an attacker multiplier
Attackers can generate more persuasive messages, translate them, imitate a person’s style and manipulate audio or video. That may increase the speed and scale of campaigns, but the cited guidance does not establish a uniform increase in every attack’s success rate. Treat faster, more convincing activity as a planning concern rather than a guaranteed outcome.
AI as a new attack surface
Models, training data, plug-ins, retrieval systems and autonomous agents add components that must be identified and controlled. An agent that can read a database or send a payment can cause harm through an incorrect or manipulated instruction even when nobody is deliberately attacking it. NIST’s AI-security work treats these systems as software and information systems that need identity, authorization, integrity and audit controls.

What cyber risks does AI create?
The most useful way to understand AI risk is to separate the input, the model and the actions the system can take. Each layer has different defenses.
Indirect prompt injection and other adversarial inputs
An agent may retrieve a web page, email or document containing instructions designed to override its intended task. The malicious text can be indirect: it is hidden in data the agent was asked to process rather than typed by the user. NIST identifies indirect prompt injection as a concern for agent systems and discusses mitigations in its request for information on securing AI agents (NIST, January 12, 2026).
Input filtering and testing can reduce exposure, but they do not make an agent trustworthy by themselves. Limiting the agent’s permissions and requiring approval for consequential actions reduces the damage if an instruction slips through.
Data poisoning and compromised components
Training or retrieval data can be altered so that a model learns a harmful association or produces unreliable results. NIST also distinguishes insecure models, code and model weights as information-security concerns (NIST AI 600-1, Generative AI Profile). Provenance records, integrity checks, controlled changes and review of suppliers address these risks more directly than a general endpoint scanner.

Agent actions and excessive authority
An agent with broad access can delete files, disclose confidential information, approve transactions or call external services. NIST’s concept paper on software-agent identity and authority focuses on identification, authorization and auditing, but it is a concept effort rather than a completed certification or product test (NIST, February 5, 2026).
Ordinary software weaknesses
AI products still contain familiar vulnerabilities. NIST specifically notes authentication failures and memory-management flaws as examples that can affect agent systems (NIST, January 12, 2026). Patching, secure coding, dependency management and access control remain necessary; AI-specific safeguards do not replace them.
Synthetic phishing and impersonation
Generative systems can produce realistic text, cloned voices or manipulated video that pressure a recipient to reveal credentials or authorize a payment. NIST’s preliminary profile calls for updated personnel training and integrated defenses, including email and authentication security (NIST IR 8596). These measures reduce exposure and improve response, but the sources do not claim that they identify every synthetic message.
Can AI help defend against cyberattacks?
Yes, when it is used as a supervised capability inside a broader detection and response process. An AI assistant can prioritize alerts or draft an investigation, while a trained analyst verifies the evidence and decides what action is safe. NIST explicitly recommends evaluating maturity for the organization’s needs rather than assuming that an AI feature always improves outcomes.
Effective deployment also requires dependable data, clear escalation paths and records of what the system recommended. If an automated action can lock accounts, change firewall rules or move money, require a human approval or a narrowly defined policy for that action. Keep a conventional response plan for outages, incorrect recommendations and model manipulation.
Information sharing helps organizations respond to AI-related incidents and vulnerabilities. CISA’s January 2025 JCDC AI Cybersecurity Collaboration Playbook describes voluntary processes for sharing that information; it is a collaboration and preparation guide, not a recommendation for a particular security product (CISA, January 14, 2025).

Which security tools address which AI-related risks?
Match a control to a specific failure mode. The following boundaries are as important as the benefits.
| Risk or use | Relevant controls | What the guidance supports | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI-assisted phishing, synthetic impersonation and deepfakes | Email security, authentication, staff training and incident response | Integrated email and authentication defenses plus updated training can reduce exposure and speed reporting. | They will not detect every generated message or stop every social-engineering attempt. |
| Prompt injection or harmful agent tool use | Agent identity, authorization, least privilege, input controls and auditing | These controls can constrain which data and tools an agent may use and create an activity record. | The concept paper does not establish that a particular implementation is effective. |
| Poisoned data or compromised AI components | Secure development, provenance, integrity checks and risk governance | Protecting code, training data and model weights is part of AI information security. | A general endpoint or antivirus product alone does not secure a model supply chain. |
| Conventional vulnerabilities in AI software | Secure coding, patching, vulnerability management and access control | Normal software-security practices address authentication and memory-safety weaknesses. | AI-specific controls do not remove ordinary exploitable bugs. |
| AI used in security operations | Detection, response, recovery and analyst-workflow tools | AI may augment analysts and improve parts of the workflow when evaluated for fit. | The cited sources provide no universal performance guarantee or independent product ranking. |
| Faster, larger-scale attacker activity | Resilient architecture, monitoring, response readiness and information sharing | Preparation can reduce the time needed to identify and contain incidents. | The evidence does not show a uniform increase in every attack’s success rate. |
Do AI security tools stop phishing or deepfakes?
No. They can make phishing harder to deliver and easier to report, but synthetic content can evade a detector and a convincing request can be acted on before a system flags it. Defense works best as a chain: verify the request, protect the account, monitor unusual activity and maintain a recovery process.

Use authentication that resists stolen passwords
Multi-factor authentication reduces the value of a leaked password. A FIDO2 security key can add phishing-resistant authentication for compatible accounts and devices, but it does not analyze a deepfake, block prompt injection or secure an AI model. Confirm compatibility and maintain a recovery method before requiring keys for critical accounts.
Change how high-value requests are verified
Do not approve a payment, payroll change or credential reset solely because a familiar voice or video appears. Use a second channel or a pre-agreed verification procedure, and make the procedure part of staff training. Email filtering and authentication controls lower the number of malicious requests that reach a user; they cannot make a human decision risk-free.
Plan for a suspected impersonation
Preserve the message and relevant logs, notify the security or finance contact, disable or protect affected accounts and review recent transactions. A documented path matters because AI-generated communications can create urgency that defeats ad hoc judgment.
How should organizations secure AI agents?
Secure an agent as you would a privileged application, with additional controls for untrusted instructions and model behavior.

- Inventory the agent and its connections. Record the model, prompts, data sources, plug-ins, APIs, human owners and environments. You cannot authorize an unknown connection.
- Give the agent a distinct identity. Use a service identity rather than a shared employee account, and record which agent made each request. Identity makes revocation and investigation possible.
- Apply least privilege. Allow only the files, records, tools and operations required for the stated task. Separate read, write, export and transaction permissions.
- Require approval for consequential actions. Put human confirmation or a tightly bounded policy in front of payments, deletions, external messages, permission changes and bulk exports.
- Control untrusted inputs. Treat retrieved pages, emails and uploaded documents as data, not instructions. Test for indirect prompt injection and keep secrets out of the model’s context where possible.
- Audit and rehearse. Log prompts, tool calls, approvals, outputs and failures. Test how quickly you can revoke the identity, restore data and investigate an abnormal action.
These steps implement the identity, authorization and auditing ideas discussed in NIST’s software-agent concept paper, while recognizing that the paper is not a finished control certification (NIST, February 5, 2026).
How do you protect AI models and their data?
Model security starts before deployment. Define who may change training or retrieval data, record versions and approvals, verify the integrity of model files and dependencies, and separate development, testing and production credentials. Review vendors and open-source components for ownership, update practices and incident notification.
Governance should cover privacy, retention, acceptable uses and a process for reporting harmful or incorrect outputs. NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework is voluntary; version 1.0 was released on January 26, 2023, and NIST says it is being revised. Its Generative AI Profile, NIST AI 600-1, was released July 26, 2024 (NIST AI RMF; NIST AI 600-1).
NIST’s August 2025 control-overlays page describes proposed overlays for generative, predictive, single-agent, multi-agent and developer use cases. The paper and action plan are concepts, not a finalized control set (NIST control overlays).
How should you evaluate an AI-security tool?
Ask for evidence tied to the risk you need to manage, not a broad claim that the tool “secures AI.”
| Evaluation question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What exact threat does it address? | A phishing filter, an agent authorization layer and a model-integrity control solve different problems. |
| What data and privileges does it require? | More access can improve visibility while increasing the consequence of compromise or misuse. |
| Where does it run? | Cloud, endpoint, email, development and production environments have different failure modes and integration needs. |
| What independent evidence exists? | Request test methods, dates, conditions, false-positive information and limitations; do not treat marketing claims as a benchmark. |
| How is it monitored and revoked? | You need logs, ownership, alert handling and a way to disable the control without losing essential operations. |
| What residual risk remains? | Document attacks, mistakes and blind spots the product cannot address, then assign another control or an accepted-risk owner. |

What cybersecurity guidance is current, and what is still being developed?
NIST’s Cyber AI Profile remained a preliminary draft in the December 2025 announcement, while an August 2026 workshop report documented continuing work (NIST announcement; NIST IR 8607). Barbara Cuthill, identified by NIST as a speaker, explained the framing this way: “The three focus areas reflect the fact that AI is entering organizations’ awareness in different ways.” The quote describes the profile’s structure, not a claim that any tool is effective.
NIST’s May 2026 report summarizes responses to an information request on AI-agent security. Commenters broadly described novel threats and the need to adapt fundamental cybersecurity practices, but the report is a summary of responses, not a quantified prevalence study (NIST, May 18, 2026). Check the status of developing profiles and concepts when making compliance or procurement decisions.

What should individuals and small organizations do now?
- Enable multi-factor authentication on email, banking, payroll and administrator accounts, prioritizing phishing-resistant methods where supported.
- Use a separate verification channel for payment changes, urgent transfers and requests for secrets.
- Keep operating systems, browsers, routers, applications and AI integrations patched.
- Limit who can export customer or financial data and review access when roles change.
- Turn on transaction and sign-in alerts, and decide in advance who investigates an unusual event.
- Train staff to report suspicious messages without punishment for a mistaken report; rapid reporting improves containment.
- Maintain tested backups and a written recovery contact list.
These measures do not depend on detecting every generated message. They reduce the value of stolen credentials, constrain unauthorized actions and shorten recovery time when prevention fails.
What remains unproven about AI and cybersecurity?
No cited official source provides a single percentage for how much AI increases cyber risk or a universal measure of how much an AI-security product improves outcomes. The evidence supports a control-by-control approach: identify the threat, select the narrowest effective safeguard, measure its operation and document what remains exposed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can AI replace cybersecurity staff?
No. Current guidance presents AI as an aid for analysis and workflow, with human judgment, escalation and accountability still required. Staff also need to validate outputs and handle failures when data, models or integrations are unavailable.
Is multi-factor authentication enough against AI-enabled fraud?
It protects account access but does not verify that a payment request, voice call or video is genuine. Pair it with transaction approval procedures, least-privilege access and monitoring for unusual activity.
How can I tell whether an AI agent is overprivileged?
List every data source, tool and action it can reach, then compare that list with its documented task. If it can export, delete, approve or message without a separate need and approval, reduce the permission or add a policy gate.
Are deepfake detectors reliable on their own?
No universal reliability claim is established by the cited guidance. Treat detector output as one signal and retain independent verification for high-value decisions.
