AI chips can support equipment financing, but lenders do not value them by model name or purchase price alone. They assess the equipment’s current resale value, the cash it can generate under customer contracts, and the likelihood that it will remain economically useful after those contracts end. The result depends on the whole operating platform—power, cooling, networking, customer demand and the borrower’s ability to run and re-lease the equipment—as well as the financing structure. There is no standard GPU loan-to-value percentage or universal residual-value curve.

What does it mean to value AI chips as collateral?

It means estimating how much credit a lender can safely support with AI computing equipment and the income associated with putting that equipment to work. The collateral may include GPUs or other accelerators, servers and related hardware; the financing may also depend on contracts that generate revenue from operating that hardware.

Three values matter, and they answer different questions:

  • Current market value: What could the equipment sell for now under a stated appraisal premise?
  • Cash-flow value: How reliably can the borrower earn enough from operating the equipment to repay the financing?
  • Residual or liquidation value: What might remain when a contract ends or the lender needs to recover its money, after accounting for resale demand, sale timing and the condition of the equipment?

Those amounts are not interchangeable. A machine can be operational yet have a low resale price if buyers have moved to newer generations. Conversely, a lender may be more comfortable financing equipment with a modest resale value if a creditworthy customer has committed to pay for its use. KBRA’s analysis emphasizes that credit quality depends less on the hardware alone than on the durability of cash flow generated by the broader operating platform.

Collateral value is also not automatically the amount a borrower can draw. A lender may apply a discount to an appraisal, impose eligibility rules, require faster repayment, or limit advances against equipment with uncertain resale markets. The loan’s actual availability depends on the facility documents and underwriting, not a single public GPU valuation formula.

How do lenders estimate a GPU’s value?

They combine equipment-level inspection, current market evidence, operating economics and a view of what happens at the end of the first contract. A valuation is most useful when it makes its assumptions explicit: what asset is being valued, at what date, in what condition, and under what sale or operating scenario.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Identify the exact equipment and its condition

The starting point is a complete asset record, not simply a count of GPUs. Lenders and appraisers need to know the chip generation, server configuration, memory, interconnect, installation site, operating status, ownership, liens and maintenance history. These details affect both whether the equipment can be used as intended and whether another operator could take it over.

Location and configuration matter because an accelerator is part of a system. Its value to a buyer may depend on compatible servers, networking, facility access, cooling and the ability to power and operate the installation. A lender also needs to establish that the borrower owns the assets or has the rights needed to pledge them, and to identify other liens that could affect recovery.

2. Establish a current market mark

Appraisers look for market evidence, especially completed resale transactions, and define the premise of the valuation. A closing-date appraisal is a point-in-time assessment for a financing transaction; it is not necessarily a promise that the same proceeds could be realized later or in a forced sale. American Compute distinguishes that closing-date appraisal from recurring valuations used for covenant and borrowing-base tests.

That distinction matters as prices and rental rates change. A lender may refresh its mark on scheduled test dates and use the updated valuation to calculate how much borrowing capacity remains. American Compute’s materials describe recurring valuations in that covenant and borrowing-base context; they do not establish a universal frequency applicable to every financing.

3. Separate physical life from economic life

Physical life asks how long the equipment can continue functioning with maintenance. Economic life asks how long customers are likely to pay an attractive price to use it. For collateral underwriting, the second question can be more important: continued operation does not guarantee continued competitiveness.

KBRA frames the post-contract question as whether customers will keep using the capacity at an attractive price. Relevant considerations include workload fit, how easily the equipment can be used for different workloads, switching costs, power cost per unit of compute and the operator’s refresh strategy. A chip that is useful only for a narrow set of workloads, or costly to run relative to newer alternatives, may have a weaker economic life even if it remains functional.

Clifford Chance cites an average GPU economic life of three to five years. S&P Global Ratings describes a four-to-five-year likely refresh interval for high-performance GPUs and CPUs. These are industry observations, not fixed maturities or guaranteed resale schedules for each generation, borrower or workload.

4. Underwrite the revenue and customer behind the equipment

Lenders examine whether customers have committed to pay, for how long, and how dependable that payment is. Clifford Chance reports that newer GPU financing programs are increasingly sized to contracted revenue rather than theoretical resale value. That makes the customer agreement and the customer’s ability to perform central parts of the credit case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Key contract questions include whether payments are take-or-pay or subject to minimum commitments, the customer’s credit quality, contract term, extension rights, prepayment provisions, debt-service coverage and customer concentration. A long contract is not automatically strong support if the customer is weak, the terms allow easy termination, or one customer accounts for most of the operator’s revenue.

Contracted revenue and equipment security are related but distinct protections. A contract may support repayment while the equipment is operating, but the lender still needs to understand its rights to the hardware and any relevant contracts if the borrower defaults. The precise rights depend on the transaction documents.

5. Estimate residual and liquidation value

The lender considers what could happen if the original customer contract expires, the operator cannot pay, or the equipment must be sold. That analysis can distinguish an orderly sale from a forced sale, consider how much time a sale may take, and assess the depth of demand from likely replacement customers. It also takes account of where the equipment sits in the technology cycle and when the next generation may arrive.

There is no public, universal residual-value curve that reliably applies to every GPU generation. An estimate should therefore be read as conditional on its assumptions, including the equipment configuration, sale timing, market demand and valuation premise—not as a guaranteed floor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Set borrowing controls and refresh the valuation

Once a lender has an appraisal and a cash-flow case, it can define how much borrowing is permitted and when that capacity is tested. A borrowing-base test compares eligible collateral value with outstanding debt under the facility’s agreed rules; an LTV test compares debt with a stated collateral value. The contract determines which valuation is used, how discounts or eligibility limits apply, and what happens if the test is missed.

At later test dates, the lender may need to account for changes in market prices, rental rates, power costs and technology roadmaps. A lower mark can reduce borrowing headroom even if the chips still operate and the borrower remains current on payments. American Compute discusses recurring marks for these covenant and borrowing-base purposes, while KBRA highlights the broader platform and cash-flow factors that shape credit quality.

Why is GPU collateral riskier than conventional equipment collateral?

The challenge is not simply that chips depreciate. Their economic usefulness and resale prospects can change quickly as computing demand, power economics and technology change, while their ability to earn revenue depends on infrastructure and customers around them.

  • Refresh pressure: Clifford Chance cites a three-to-five-year average GPU economic life; S&P Global Ratings cites a likely four-to-five-year refresh interval for high-performance GPUs and CPUs. The figures are estimates from different sources, not one universal life schedule.
  • Technology obsolescence: Columbia Business School economist Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh writes that AI hardware has a shorter economic life and greater residual-value risk than traditional collateral such as aircraft because of technological obsolescence.
  • Platform dependence: Power, cooling, networking, facility access, operator continuity and customer contracts affect whether chips can generate cash. Equipment removed from a working environment may not produce the same income simply because it remains physically intact.
  • Uncertain re-leasing demand: A lender must consider whether a replacement customer can use the configuration at an attractive price, not only whether the hardware can be switched on.
  • Concentration and contract exposure: A portfolio reliant on a small number of customers or a single contract can be less resilient if demand or payment falters.

These factors help explain why a headline percentage for “AI infrastructure” should not be treated as a GPU advance rate. Van Nieuwerburgh cites 70%–80% leverage on physical AI infrastructure in a broad 2026 observation. It is not a universal loan-to-value range for individual chips, nor does it establish that a particular borrower or asset package can obtain that leverage.

Which financing structure changes who bears residual risk?

The structure determines whether the lender mainly relies on a borrower’s repayment, lease payments and residual value, project cash flow, or a customer contract. It also affects who owns the equipment and who is exposed to its value at the end of the financing term.

Structure How it works Who is most exposed to residual value?
Equipment loan The borrower owns the hardware; the lender relies on debt service and a perfected security interest. The borrower retains ownership exposure; the lender depends on repayment and its enforceable security rights if there is a default.
Fair-market-value lease The lessor owns the equipment and prices the lease around expected residual value. Usually the lessor bears end-of-term residual risk.
Dollar-buyout lease Payments effectively amortize the equipment cost, with a buyout at the end. Residual risk is largely with the lessee or owner at buyout.
Sale-leaseback An operator sells equipment and leases it back to release liquidity. Depends on the lease and transaction terms; accounting and legal treatment depend on whether control genuinely transfers.
Vendor or milestone financing Funding follows supplier terms or delivery milestones. Depends on the financing terms and who owns or guarantees the equipment and obligations.
Contract-backed facility Repayment is supported primarily by a customer contract and customer credit, with the GPU package as security. Contract performance supports repayment, while remaining equipment exposure depends on the security and recovery terms.

KBRA notes that structure determines whether repayment depends on ring-fenced project cash flow, lease performance and residual value, or a lessee or support provider. The labels alone do not settle that question: guarantees, recourse, ownership, contract assignment and default remedies are transaction-specific.

How should a borrower compare two GPU financing offers?

Compare the full allocation of risk and the conditions that can reduce available funding, not just the advertised advance or payment. Two offers with similar initial proceeds can leave the borrower with very different exposure if one requires faster amortization or places more end-of-term value risk on the borrower.

Question to ask Why it changes the decision
Who bears residual-value risk? A fair-market-value lease typically leaves that risk with the lessor; other structures may leave more of it with the borrower or lessee.
How does contract tenor compare with expected economic life? A repayment schedule extending beyond the period of attractive customer demand can leave debt outstanding after earning capacity weakens.
How strong and concentrated are the customers? Customer credit, concentration and take-or-pay or minimum-commitment terms influence the durability of contracted cash flow.
What is the power cost per unit of compute? Power economics affect whether the equipment can compete for workloads and sustain operating margins.
How fungible is the configuration? Greater workload fit and replacement-customer demand can support re-leasing prospects, though they do not guarantee a particular resale price.
How quickly does principal amortize? Faster repayment can reduce the chance that outstanding debt exceeds collateral value as equipment ages.
When and how is value remeasured? Valuation frequency, appraisal premises and borrowing-base rules determine how quickly a change in market conditions can affect headroom.
What control does the lender have over equipment and contracts? Ownership, liens, access and contractual rights affect the lender’s ability to preserve operating value or recover assets.
Are there additional protections? Buybacks, guarantees, refresh commitments and residual-value insurance can shift or reduce particular risks, but their scope and enforceability matter.

Ask the lender to show how the offer behaves under a weaker case, not only its initial appraisal: for example, if a customer does not renew, a market mark declines, or power costs make the equipment less competitive. The goal is to identify which party must contribute cash, repay early, replace a customer or absorb a lower residual—not to assume a stress case has a single predictable outcome.

What do public financing figures actually tell you?

Reported figures can show that the market is active, but they do not establish a generally available rate for a new borrower. Their meaning depends on what assets, structure, date and borrower they describe.

Reported figure What it supports—and what it does not
70%–80% leverage on physical AI infrastructure, cited by Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh at Columbia Business School in 2026 A broad infrastructure observation, not a universal GPU loan-to-value or advance rate.
Three-to-five-year average GPU economic life, cited by Clifford Chance in 2026 An estimate useful for lifecycle analysis, not a guarantee that an individual GPU can be financed for that period or sold at a specified value.
Four-to-five-year likely refresh interval for high-performance GPUs and CPUs, cited by S&P Global Ratings in 2025 A refresh-pressure observation, not a statement that every chip becomes unusable at that age.
CoreWeave GPU-collateralized debt grew from US$2.3 billion in 2023 to a US$7.5 billion facility in 2024, reported by Clifford Chance in 2026 A disclosed financing example, not evidence of the terms or availability a different borrower can obtain.

Keep transaction disclosures separate from valuation methodologies and broad market commentary. A financing amount may describe a particular facility, while an appraisal mark describes assets under defined assumptions and an infrastructure leverage observation may cover a wider pool than GPUs alone.

What should the loan documents make clear?

Before relying on equipment as collateral, a borrower should be able to identify the asset pool, the valuation rules and the consequences of a shortfall in the documents. The relevant questions differ by structure, so a lender’s term sheet should be read alongside the security, lease and customer-contract provisions.

  • Which chips, servers and related assets are included, and how are substitutions, upgrades or refreshes handled?
  • Who owns each item, what liens already exist, and what rights does the lender receive?
  • What appraisal premise and valuation process apply at closing and at later covenant or borrowing-base dates?
  • How are eligible collateral, advance limits, concentration limits and any required valuation discounts defined?
  • What happens if a valuation or borrowing-base test is missed: additional collateral, repayment, cure periods or another remedy?
  • Can customer contracts be assigned or relied on by the lender, and what happens if a customer terminates or fails to pay?
  • Who pays to maintain, insure, relocate or recover the hardware, and who can access it if the operator defaults?
  • Are guarantees, buybacks, refresh commitments or residual-value protections binding, and what conditions or exclusions limit them?

These questions do not produce one universal “correct” valuation. They expose whether the financing remains serviceable if operating income falls, the equipment’s market mark changes, or the original customer is no longer available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a lender take GPUs as collateral if the borrower is leasing them?

Not automatically. The borrower must have rights it can pledge, and the existing lease may restrict transfers or create a superior claim; the ownership and security documents determine what a lender can actually enforce.

Does a high appraised GPU value guarantee the lender will advance against it?

No. An appraisal is one input, while the lender also applies its eligibility rules, cash-flow analysis, structure and risk limits. A current market mark is not a commitment to lend that amount.

What happens to a GPU loan if the customer contract ends early?

The outcome depends on the contract, financing covenants and available replacement demand. A borrower should check whether early termination triggers repayment or other remedies and whether the equipment can be redeployed without disrupting lender rights.

Is residual-value insurance the same as a GPU buyback guarantee?

No. Insurance and a buyback commitment are different contractual protections, and neither should be treated as covering every loss without reviewing its scope, conditions and exclusions. The financing documents should say who provides the protection and when it can be claimed.
