AI agents can pay with USDC or another stablecoin safely only when they operate as narrowly delegated spenders, not as owners of an unrestricted wallet. Put the agent behind a capped, dedicated wallet; keep signing keys in hardware, an HSM, MPC custody, or an attested enclave; bind every payment to a signed policy; and require a human or independent policy service to approve unusual transactions.
That design must also defend against prompt injection, verify the exact recipient and network, screen sanctions and wallet risk, submit idempotently, and preserve evidence for recovery and compliance. A stablecoin’s price objective does not make its payment system automatically safe: NIST separates stability, security, safety, and trust as distinct engineering and governance concerns.

A safe payment has a clear principal, a limited delegation, an independently enforced policy, an external signer, and a complete record of what was authorized and settled. The user or organization remains the principal. The agent receives permission to request particular payments for a defined purpose, while a policy engine or signer decides whether each request fits that permission.
Use a separate agent wallet or subaccount with only the balance needed for routine work. Keep treasury funds, administrative keys, and policy-management authority elsewhere. If the agent is compromised, the loss is then constrained by the wallet balance and policy limits rather than exposing the entire treasury.

Stablecoins deserve the same controls as any other cryptoasset. NIST’s Understanding Stablecoin Technology and Related Security Considerations (September 2023) noted that the stablecoin market had grown to almost $200 billion in 2022, while emphasizing that price design does not eliminate security, operational, governance, or trust risks.
How should you separate the principal, agent, and treasury?
The principal authorizes a purpose and boundaries; the agent prepares a transaction; the treasury remains protected behind a policy gate and signer. Do not let a language model process hold the treasury private key or reconstruct it from prompts, environment variables, chat history, or logs.
Principal
Record who is delegating authority and for what business purpose. A mandate should identify the principal, the agent identity, the intended use, and the period during which the delegation is valid. The principal must be able to revoke the mandate independently of the agent.
Agent
Give the agent only the ability to create a payment request or submit an unsigned transaction to the control plane. It can read the information needed to perform its task, but it should not be able to alter recipient allow-lists, raise spending caps, disable screening, or approve its own policy change.
Treasury
Keep larger balances and administrative authority in a separate wallet or account. Fund the agent wallet with a capped amount and replenish it through a separate workflow. A policy breach should trigger a freeze or revocation, not grant a path into the main treasury.
What should an agent’s signed payment policy contain?
Encode the delegation as a signed, machine-verifiable policy rather than relying on instructions in a prompt. The policy should make a request objectively checkable before any signature is produced.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Agent identity and purpose: identify the software agent and the business task it may perform.
- Allowed action: specify whether the agent may make a transfer, call a contract, or perform another defined operation.
- Recipient and contract controls: list approved recipient addresses and contracts, with a deny-list for known high-risk destinations.
- Asset and network: name the permitted stablecoin, token contract, and blockchain network. Do not infer the network from a merchant message or symbol alone.
- Value limits: set a maximum value per transaction and, where appropriate, a daily maximum.
- Validity window: include an expiry time and reject requests outside it.
- Nonce and replay protection: require a unique nonce or equivalent mechanism so an old authorization cannot be reused.
- Risk or verification gate: require a minimum verification score or an equivalent independent risk decision before signing.
- Revocation: define how the principal freezes the authority and how the signer rejects already-revoked mandates.
ERC-8196 describes this style of delegated authority with allowed and blocked contracts, per-transaction and optional daily limits, validity windows, and verification-score gating. Its replay-protection and audit-chaining concepts are useful even when your implementation does not use that proposal directly.

Google Cloud’s Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) provides another useful pattern: signed Intent, Cart, and Payment mandates preserve the connection between the user’s instruction, the exact items and price, and the resulting payment. AP2 frames the central problems as authorization, authenticity, and accountability. More than 60 organizations were collaborating on AP2 in 2025, but adoption does not remove the need to evaluate its controls for your own jurisdiction and systems.
How do you stop prompt injection from redirecting a payment?
Treat every external string as hostile data. A merchant page, payment URL, tool response, token name, NFT or token metadata, on-chain memo, and email can contain text intended to manipulate the agent. None of that text should be allowed to change the destination, amount, token, network, expiry, or approval requirement.
Keep data and authority separate
Parse external content into structured fields, then compare those fields with the signed policy. If a page says “send to this replacement address,” the agent should produce a policy mismatch, not rewrite the mandate. The same rule applies to a memo that says to bypass screening or to a tool output that requests a larger allowance.
Use an independent transaction builder
Have a deterministic service construct the transaction from validated fields. The model can explain or propose a payment, but a separate component should resolve the token contract, chain, recipient, amount, fee, nonce, calldata, and expiry. The signer should receive the resulting structured request, not free-form model text.
Require a fresh signing ceremony
XRPL’s agent-wallet guidance requires a fixed preview-sign-submit sequence and says untrusted memo text must not drive a signing decision. Follow the same principle on other chains: rebuild and preview the exact transaction at signing time, even if an earlier model response appeared trustworthy.
What is the safest way to store and use signing keys?
The model runtime should never read the treasury key. The signing boundary must be outside the process that interprets untrusted language and tool output.
| Approach | Key handling | How the agent interacts | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardware, HSM, or external signer | The key remains in a protected signing device or service. | The agent submits a structured, unsigned request and receives a signature only after policy checks. | Strong separation for routine and high-value payments. |
| MPC | Key shares are distributed so the complete key is not exposed to the agent. Circle’s current Agent Platform terms describe a 2-of-2 MPC arrangement. | The signing protocol runs outside the model’s memory and logs. | Organizations needing distributed control and operational availability. |
| Attested enclave | Signing occurs inside an isolated environment whose expected code and state can be attested. | The agent calls a narrowly defined signing interface. | Automated workflows that can maintain a verifiable execution boundary. |
| Unrestricted key in the agent runtime | The model process can access or reconstruct the private key. | The agent can potentially sign anything it is tricked into producing. | Not an acceptable treasury design. |
Hardware or MPC does not make a bad transaction safe. It protects the key; policy validation and transaction review still have to establish that the payment itself is legitimate.

How should a payment be previewed, approved, and submitted?
Use a fixed ceremony that creates a human-readable record and a machine-verifiable request. Routine payments may be automated only when they remain inside a short-lived, narrow policy scope.
- Generate the request: the agent proposes the recipient, network, token contract, amount, purpose, fee limits, nonce, and expiry.
- Resolve canonical details: convert names and symbols into the exact address, chain identifier, and token contract. Reject ambiguous or changed resolution results.
- Run policy checks: verify the mandate, recipient and contract allow-lists, per-transaction and daily caps, validity window, nonce uniqueness, and required verification score.
- Screen risk: run sanctions and wallet-risk checks before signing. Escalate a destination with a new or changed risk signal, even if it was previously permitted.
- Preview the complete transaction: show the full recipient address, chain, token, amount, fee, expiry, calldata, and reason to the human approver or independent policy service.
- Obtain approval when required: require explicit approval for first-time recipients, contract approvals, swaps, large amounts, policy changes, and anomalous behavior.
- Persist an identifier: save the transaction hash or idempotency key before submission so a timeout cannot create an accidental duplicate.
- Sign externally: send only the validated transaction to the hardware, HSM, MPC service, or attested enclave.
- Submit and wait for a validated result: record the network response and wait for the chain’s validated or final result rather than treating a broadcast acknowledgement as settlement.
- Reconcile: compare the settled transaction with the intended request and update balances, mandate usage, and the audit record.
When should a human approve an autonomous payment?
Human approval is most valuable at the boundary between routine, bounded spending and actions that can expand authority or create unusual exposure. Do not ask a person to approve every low-risk payment if that trains operators to click through blindly; instead, define clear escalation triggers.
- A recipient or contract is new, changed, or outside the allow-list.
- The payment exceeds a per-transaction or daily threshold.
- The agent requests a token approval, swap, bridge, contract call, or policy modification rather than a simple transfer.
- The chain, token contract, fee, calldata, or destination differs from the mandate.
- Screening identifies sanctions exposure, mixer or illicit-service exposure, rapid forwarding, unusual velocity, or a cross-chain hop.
- The request arrives after the mandate expires, reuses a nonce, or follows a failed or timed-out submission.
- The agent asks to disable logging, screening, signing review, or another control.
Approval should cover the exact transaction, not a vague instruction such as “pay the merchant.” The approver needs the resolved address and network as well as the amount and purpose.
What compliance and sanctions checks are needed?
Payment safety includes legal and regulatory controls, and the exact obligations depend on your jurisdiction, role, issuer, chain, and token. A business operating an agent, a permitted stablecoin issuer, and a consumer using a wallet do not necessarily face the same duties.
Risk-based controls
FATF’s stablecoin work points to risk-based measures including allow-listing, deny-listing, blockchain analytics, and attention to unhosted-wallet and cross-chain risks. Screen before signing, monitor after settlement, and re-check when intelligence changes. A previously approved address should not remain permanently trusted if its risk profile changes.
Issuer and U.S. requirements
U.S. payment-stablecoin law requires permitted issuers to maintain an anti-money-laundering program, records, suspicious-activity reporting, customer identification, sanctions compliance, and the capability to block transactions. Those issuer duties do not automatically tell every wallet operator what to do, so obtain jurisdiction-specific advice before deployment and verify the issuer’s controls and terms.
Evidence to retain
Keep the mandate identifier and policy hash, the exact transaction preview, screening results, signer decision, approval identity, transaction hash, network receipt, and any freeze or escalation decision. Protect logs from alteration and restrict access because they may contain sensitive wallet and customer information.

How should you monitor and recover from failures?
Assume that timeouts, chain reorganizations, provider outages, compromised tools, and operator mistakes will occur. Recovery must be designed before the first autonomous payment.

Separate a retryable transport or service error from a definitive rejection and from an unknown result. If submission times out, query the chain and provider using the persisted hash or idempotency key before trying again. Never blindly resubmit a payment whose first attempt may have settled.
Watch behavior, not only balances
Alert on unusual velocity, repeated failures, rapid forwarding, new cross-chain paths, mixer exposure, attempts to bypass allow-lists, and unexpected changes in token or network selection. A balance check alone may miss a compromised agent that is making many small transfers.
Test emergency controls
Maintain procedures to freeze the agent wallet, revoke the mandate, rotate signer credentials, revoke allowances, and drain remaining funds to a safe address. Test those procedures in a controlled environment and define who can invoke them when the normal policy service is unavailable.
Circle’s terms place responsibility on users for spending controls, transaction-detail verification, and monitoring unauthorized or unintended automated transactions. XRPL’s guidance likewise requires persisted hashes and validated submission results. These are operational requirements, not optional reporting features.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What should you compare when choosing an agent-payment design?
Compare the control system, not just the advertised chain coverage or transaction speed. A design that is fast but cannot revoke authority or prove what the user approved is a poor fit for autonomous spending.
- Custody and key exposure: determine whether signing uses a hardware device, HSM, MPC, enclave, or an unsafe in-process key.
- Authority model: check whether approvals come from a human, an independent policy engine, or bounded automation, and whether those roles can be separated.
- Policy granularity: verify support for recipients, contracts, token and network restrictions, caps, expiry, nonce management, and risk-score gates.
- Screening and compliance: inspect sanctions, wallet-risk, analytics, recordkeeping, and blocking or freezing integrations for the jurisdictions involved.
- Recovery: confirm revocation, allowance cancellation, key rotation, freeze, safe-drain, and incident-review procedures.
- Audit quality: ensure the system can connect the user mandate, preview, policy decision, signature, transaction hash, receipt, and operator action.
- Availability and latency: evaluate how the signer and policy service behave during outages without weakening controls.
- Operating cost: include custody, screening, monitoring, compliance, incident response, and human-review costs rather than looking only at network fees.
BIS surveys identify governance, reserves, redemption, risk management, cybersecurity, and AML/CFT as recurring stablecoin-regulatory dimensions. They are also practical dimensions for evaluating an agent-payment architecture.

What is the minimum pre-launch checklist?
Before allowing an agent to move real funds, verify each control in an end-to-end test, including rejection and recovery paths.
- The principal and delegation purpose are documented.
- The agent wallet has a capped balance and is separated from treasury funds.
- Signing keys stay outside prompts, logs, agent memory, and the model runtime.
- Recipients and contracts have explicit allow-lists, with deny-list enforcement.
- Per-transaction and daily limits, expiry, nonce uniqueness, and revocation are enforced by an independent component.
- External content is parsed as untrusted data and cannot rewrite payment fields.
- The full transaction preview includes address, chain, token, amount, fee, expiry, calldata, and reason.
- High-risk actions have explicit human or independent-policy approval.
- Sanctions and wallet-risk screening runs before signing and when risk data changes.
- Hashes or idempotency keys are persisted before submission, and settlement is validated before reconciliation.
- Freeze, revoke, rotate, allowance-revocation, safe-drain, and incident-review procedures have been tested.
- Jurisdiction, issuer, token, chain, and service-provider terms have been reviewed for the deployment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI agent use the company’s main stablecoin treasury wallet?
It should not. Use a dedicated, capped wallet or subaccount and keep treasury and administrative authority behind a separate control plane so an agent compromise has a bounded blast radius.
Recommended Free Tools
Does a hardware wallet prevent a prompt-injection attack?
No. Hardware signing protects the key, but a human or independent policy service can still be tricked into approving a bad transaction if the recipient, network, amount, or calldata is not verified.
What should happen when an agent payment times out?
Treat the result as unknown until you query the chain and provider using the saved transaction hash or idempotency key. Reconcile settlement before retrying; a second submission can duplicate a payment that actually succeeded.
Are stablecoin payments reversible after signing?
Treat every submission as potentially irreversible. Circle’s terms specifically warn that a compromised agent can initiate irreversible transactions, which is why caps, screening, preview, and emergency freeze procedures must operate before signing.
Which records prove that a user authorized an agent payment?
Retain the signed mandate or policy hash, the exact transaction preview, approval and screening decisions, signer event, transaction hash, and validated network receipt. Linking those records shows both what authority was granted and what ultimately settled.
