AI adoption is changing the tasks people do and how employers organize work, but current evidence does not show that it is causing widespread job losses or reliably raising wages. Some firm-level studies find productivity gains; other research finds little average change in earnings or work hours so far. The effects depend on which tasks AI can handle, whether employers actually use it, how workers and firms adapt, and how much demand grows when work becomes faster or cheaper.
For workers and households, the practical takeaway is to distinguish a job’s exposure to AI from a real change in employment or income. Exposure describes potential; adoption and measurable outcomes are separate questions.

How will AI affect jobs?
AI affects work first by changing tasks, not by automatically eliminating whole occupations. A tool might take over part of a task, help a worker complete it, lower the cost of producing something, or create new work around using and supervising the tool. Which effect dominates depends on how firms adopt AI, how customers respond, and whether workers can move into changed or newly created tasks.
Why task changes do not translate directly into job losses
An occupation is usually a bundle of tasks. If AI handles one task, an employer may need fewer hours for that activity but still need the employee’s judgment, communication, or other duties. If lower costs or improved output increase demand, the firm may also need more workers elsewhere. Conversely, if AI substitutes for a large share of a role and demand does not grow enough to offset it, employers may reduce hiring or staffing.

A 2025 National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) paper models these opposing forces. It finds reduced labor demand for highly exposed tasks, but also finds that productivity-driven increases in labor demand at adopting firms offset some of those reductions in overall employment. The paper’s result is not a guarantee that every affected worker will find equivalent work: a gain at one firm or in one role does not necessarily protect a worker facing a local layoff or a difficult transition.
What recent workplace evidence shows
An NBER study of Denmark linked employer adoption surveys with administrative records. Over the two years after ChatGPT’s launch, it found no average effect on earnings or recorded hours large enough to exceed 2% in either direction in that study setting. At the same time, employers reorganized tasks and introduced work involving content generation, AI oversight, and AI integration. The finding illustrates how work can change before average employment measures move; it does not settle what will happen over a longer period or in other countries.

That is a statement about the observed evidence and period covered, not a forecast that displacement cannot grow as adoption deepens.
Does AI increase productivity?
Sometimes. The size and visibility of a gain depend on what is measured: a worker’s time saved is not the same as more output per hour at a firm, and a firm-level result is not automatically an economy-wide productivity increase.
A firm-level estimate from the EU and United States
A 2026 European Investment Bank (EIB) study used matched data on more than 12,000 non-financial firms in the EU and US. It estimated that AI adoption increased the level of labor productivity by 4% in its sample. The study attributes the increase to capital deepening and reports no adverse firm-level employment effect. It also finds that productivity gains are concentrated in medium and large firms.

This is a study-specific estimate, not a prediction that every adopting company will become 4% more productive. It does not mean that an individual employee’s output, pay, or job security rises by 4%. The ILO’s June 2026 review adds an important qualification: early gains are uneven and are often not yet verified in measured output. Workers may report saving a few percent of working hours without those savings consistently showing up in output, wages, or employment data.

Why productivity gains can take time to appear
Adopting a tool is only one part of changing production. Firms may need suitable software, reliable data, redesigned workflows, and training before AI improves measurable output. OECD analysis describes broad economic gains as contingent on effective diffusion, skills, infrastructure, and the ability to reallocate labor and capital. A firm can therefore use AI without immediately producing more per hour, while a firm that complements the tool with organizational changes may be better placed to capture gains.
Will AI lower wages or raise them?
Current evidence does not establish a broad causal increase or decrease in wages for all workers. The direction depends on how AI changes the demand for particular skills, how productivity gains are shared, and whether a worker’s tasks are complemented or substituted.
What the wage studies can and cannot tell you
The EIB reports higher wages at AI-adopting firms, alongside higher innovation and productivity. That firm-level association does not establish that AI caused an individual employee to receive a raise; firms that adopt may differ in other ways, and the result should not be treated as a personal pay forecast. In the Denmark study, researchers found no average earnings effect larger than 2% in either direction over the two-year study window.
Those results address different populations, outcomes, and methods, so they are not contradictory. One reports an association among firms in an EU-US sample; the other estimates short-run changes in worker and workplace earnings in Denmark. Neither settles future wage effects across all occupations or countries.

Why the distribution of gains matters
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) warns that labor-income inequality could rise if AI complements higher-income workers more strongly than lower-income workers. It also describes a potential increase in wealth inequality if returns to capital rise. These are mechanisms and risks, not measured universal outcomes. Whether productivity gains reach workers through pay, better working conditions, lower prices, or expanded hiring is a separate distribution question from whether a firm becomes more productive.
Which workers are most exposed to generative AI?
Workers are more exposed when a larger share of their tasks could potentially be affected by AI. Exposure is not the same as actual use, automation, job loss, or unemployment: a task may be technically affected while an employer does not adopt AI, or AI may assist the worker rather than replace the work.
The IMF estimated in 2024 that AI could affect about 40% of jobs globally. “Affect” here means exposure, not that 40% of jobs will disappear. The IMF distinguishes work that AI may complement from work it may substitute for, and notes potential productivity effects. The ILO also reports variation in transformative exposure by gender and by national or regional income level. These broad estimates do not determine what will happen to a particular person’s job.
Adoption is another distinct measure. An NBER survey paper published in August 2026 describes generative AI use as widespread but shallow: it appears across many occupations and tasks, but in most groups fewer than half of workers adopt it. People doing similar work may therefore have different levels of access to, or use for, AI tools.

- Technology: Is the study about generative AI and chatbots, or broader AI and machine-learning systems?
- Outcome: Does it measure task demand, jobs, hours, earnings, or productivity? These outcomes are not interchangeable.
- Unit: Is the result about a worker, occupation, workplace, firm, sector, or national economy?
- Method: Is it based on exposure modeling, worker or employer surveys, administrative records, an experiment, or a firm-level design?
- Time and place: A two-year result in Denmark or an EU-US firm sample cannot establish long-run effects across the world.
- Evidence status: Is the number a measured outcome, a reported time saving, an association, an estimate of potential exposure, or a projection?
For example, the IMF’s approximately 40% figure is an exposure estimate, while the EIB’s 4% figure is a firm-level productivity estimate. Neither is a forecast of how many workers will lose jobs or how much an individual’s pay will change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does this mean for your career and finances?
For personal planning, treat AI as a reason to monitor how your work is changing—not as proof that your job or income is about to disappear. The evidence points to rapid task reorganization, but it does not provide a reliable formula for predicting a specific worker’s outcome.
Track changes in tasks and hiring
Notice which parts of your role are becoming easier to automate or augment, and which still rely on context, accountability, relationships, or decisions that your employer needs someone to make. Look at actual changes in your workplace, such as new workflows, training, job descriptions, or hiring patterns, rather than assuming an exposure estimate describes your employer’s plans.
Build skills around the work that remains valuable
When your employer introduces AI, learning how to use it responsibly may help you contribute to redesigned workflows, but tool familiarity alone is not a guarantee of higher pay or job security. The EIB’s finding that gains are concentrated in medium and large firms, together with its emphasis on software, data, and workforce training as complements, points to the importance of organizational support as well as individual learning.
Keep household plans robust to uncertainty
If your work is changing, avoid treating a possible productivity gain or an exposure statistic as money you can count on. Base spending and borrowing decisions on current income, and consider whether your emergency savings and job-search plans would withstand a period of reduced hours or a transition. Those are general risk-management steps, not a prediction that AI will cause a layoff.

What is the most reliable conclusion so far?
The strongest current conclusion is that AI is changing tasks and work organization faster than researchers can establish its long-run effects on economy-wide employment and earnings. Some firm studies report productivity gains, while measured gains remain uneven and have not consistently translated into broad changes in output, pay, or jobs. Outcomes will vary by task, firm, worker, country, adoption choices, and time horizon.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is AI exposure different from a job being automated?
Exposure estimates describe tasks that AI might be capable of affecting; automation describes a task actually being performed by a system instead of a person. Whether that changes a job depends on how the employer redesigns the role and what work remains.

Can workers use AI time savings to negotiate a raise?
A time saving by itself does not show that a firm’s measured output or profits increased, or that the worker will receive a share of any gain. A compensation discussion is stronger when it can point to documented changes in responsibilities, output, or business results.
Does the evidence show that AI creates new jobs?
The Denmark study observed new work related to content generation, AI oversight, and AI integration, but that does not establish how many net jobs those activities create across the economy. New tasks can coexist with reduced demand for other tasks.
Why might a company adopt AI without increasing productivity?
A tool may not fit the workflow, or the company may lack the software, data, training, and organizational changes needed to use it effectively. Adoption counts whether AI is being used; productivity measures whether the firm produces more output per unit of input.
