Home improvement stocks generally represent retailers selling products and services to homeowners and contractors. Building materials stocks more often represent companies that manufacture, distribute, or install the products and components used in construction and remodeling. The categories overlap: Home Depot sells building materials, while Builders FirstSource serves both new home construction and repair and remodeling.
What separates the two categories?
The distinction is mainly where a company operates in the home and construction spending chain. A home improvement retailer brings together a broad assortment of finished goods and services for customers. A building materials company may make, distribute, or install more specialized products used in a project.

These are useful labels, not mutually exclusive industry boundaries. Home Depot sells building materials alongside lawn and garden products, décor, and other merchandise; Builders FirstSource supplies products for both new residential construction and repair and remodeling.
How the business models compare
| Comparison | Home improvement retailer | Building materials company |
|---|---|---|
| Typical activity | Retail sales, often combined with services such as installation or equipment rental. | Manufacturing, distribution, installation, or a combination; the mix varies by company. |
| Products | A broad assortment of home improvement products, building materials, garden goods, and related merchandise. | Often more specialized products or components, such as structural building products or coatings. |
| Customers and markets | May serve DIY consumers and professional customers, across repair and remodeling and other demand. | May serve builders, professional remodelers, industrial buyers, commercial customers, or retail customers, depending on the company. |
| What to examine | Customer mix, store and service sales, product mix, and exposure to repair and remodeling or construction. | Customer and channel mix, product-specific demand, manufacturing and distribution activities, and end markets. |
Company filings are more informative than the category label alone. The Home Depot describes a retail business spanning home improvement products, building materials, lawn and garden products, décor, and facilities maintenance items, with installation services and tool and equipment rental. Its fiscal 2025 annual report is a primary source for that description.

Examples show why “building materials” is broad
Home Depot and Lowe’s: retail-side examples
The Home Depot (NYSE: HD) is a large home improvement retailer with consumer and professional customers, plus services layered onto product sales. It reported $164.7 billion in net sales and $14.2 billion in earnings for fiscal 2025; these are Home Depot company figures, not statistics for the wider category. The company’s investor documents provide its fiscal 2025 summary.
Lowe’s (NYSE: LOW) is another major home improvement retailer. Its fiscal 2025 Form 10-K covers the year ended January 30, 2026, and is the appropriate place to examine its current business description and disclosures.
Rank #2
Builders FirstSource: a professional-focused supplier
Builders FirstSource (NYSE: BLDR) manufactures, supplies, and installs structural and related building products for professional builders in new residential construction and repair and remodeling. Its 2025 Form 10-K reports approximately 585 locations in 43 states. That is a company-reported footprint, not a measure of its addressable market. See the 2025 Form 10-K.
Sherwin-Williams: a manufacturer with a different product mix
Sherwin-Williams (NYSE: SHW) develops, manufactures, distributes, and sells paints, coatings, and related products to professional, industrial, commercial, and retail customers. It is connected to construction and renovation, but its products and customers differ from those of a lumber or framing-products supplier. The company’s investor relations site describes its business.

How to compare these stocks as investments
The label alone does not establish how much any one company depends on housing, remodeling, or construction. Compare companies using the same questions, and use their filings to understand the answers:
- Customer: Is demand tied mainly to DIY consumers, professional remodelers, homebuilders, industrial buyers, or commercial customers?
- Activity: Does the company primarily retail, manufacture, distribute, install, or combine those activities?
- End markets: How much business relates to new residential construction, repair and remodeling, nonresidential construction, industrial use, or multiple markets?
- Product exposure: Is the company built around a broad store assortment or more specialized materials, components, or coatings?
- Demand and costs: What do company disclosures say about housing activity and input-cost exposure? These can differ materially with the product and customer mix.
For financial comparisons, line up matching fiscal periods and comparable definitions for sales growth, margins, cash flow, debt, capital returns, valuation, and dividends. The business descriptions here do not establish comparable current valuations, dividend yields, returns, or expected growth, and they do not support a ranking of the categories as investments.

Put dated housing forecasts in context
Builders FirstSource’s 2025 Form 10-K cited a Home Improvement Research Institute forecast, published in September 2025, for a 2.9% increase in professional repair and remodel end-market sales in 2026 compared with 2025. It is a forecast, not a realized 2026 result, and it refers to that end market rather than to the sales growth of any company or stock. The attribution appears in the Builders FirstSource filing.
