Choose the Hilton Surpass if you want a lower annual fee, complimentary Gold status, a modest Hilton property credit, and a Free Night Reward after $15,000 in annual spending. Choose the Hilton Aspire if you stay often enough to use Diamond status, the annual free night, resort and flight credits, CLEAR+ reimbursement, and higher Hilton earning rates. The Aspire’s larger headline benefits do not automatically outweigh its higher fee; they matter only when your stays and spending make them usable.
The comparison below uses the Hilton and American Express consumer-card terms displayed on October 13, 2026, for U.S. applicants. Fees, offers, credit rules, and status benefits can change, so confirm the live terms before applying.

Annual fees and statement credits
Surpass: lower fee, simpler Hilton credit
Surpass has a listed $150 annual fee. It provides up to $50 in statement credits per calendar quarter, for a maximum of $200 per calendar year, on eligible purchases made directly with a Hilton portfolio property. A credit is useful only when you make qualifying property purchases during the relevant quarter. Unused quarterly capacity does not become a larger credit in a later quarter.
Aspire: more credits, more conditions
Aspire has a listed $550 annual fee. Its resort benefit offers up to $200 in credits every six months, or up to $400 per year, at participating resorts on eligible purchases. The card also offers up to $50 back per calendar quarter, up to $200 annually, on eligible flight purchases through qualifying purchase channels.
Aspire advertises up to $219 in CLEAR+ statement credits per calendar year, subject to the membership terms and automatic-renewal conditions. It separately offers up to $100 for a qualifying two-night stay at a participating Waldorf Astoria or Conrad. That credit requires the specified Aspire Card Benefit rate and booking process; an ordinary reservation may not qualify.

Do not subtract every advertised maximum from the annual fee. A credit has economic value only if you would have made the qualifying purchase anyway and can complete it within the stated period.
Gold versus Diamond status
Status is often the biggest practical difference between the cards, but the result depends on the hotels and regions where you stay. Hilton’s published descriptions qualify several benefits by brand, property, or availability.
| Status feature | Gold with Surpass | Diamond with Aspire |
|---|---|---|
| Bonus on Hilton Base Points | 80% bonus on Base Points earned on stays | 100% bonus on Base Points earned on every stay |
| Food benefit | Daily food-and-beverage credit or complimentary continental breakfast, depending on brand and region | Diamond benefits apply; the issuer’s description emphasizes the status package rather than promising one uniform food benefit at every property |
| Internet | Not specifically stated in the cited status description | Premium Wi-Fi |
| Room upgrades | Space-available upgrades at select properties | Space-available upgrades at select properties |
| Executive lounge | Not stated | Access at select properties |
Neither status guarantees a suite, a particular room, lounge entry at every hotel, or an upgrade when the property is full. Diamond’s 100% Base Point bonus is stronger than Gold’s 80% bonus, but the difference matters most to travelers who make frequent paid Hilton stays.

American Express describes Aspire’s benefit this way: “Enjoy complimentary Diamond status with your Card.” The issuer’s surrounding description identifies the 100% Base Point bonus, Premium Wi-Fi, and space-available upgrades at select properties.
Hilton Honors earning rates
The multipliers below are Hilton Honors points earned from the card. They are not cash-back percentages, and the official product pages do not establish one universal cash value for a Hilton point.
| Spending category | Surpass | Aspire |
|---|---|---|
| Direct purchases with Hilton portfolio hotels and resorts | 12X Hilton Honors points per dollar | 14X Hilton Honors points per dollar |
| U.S. restaurants | 6X | 7X |
| U.S. gas stations | 6X | Not separately stated |
| U.S. supermarkets | 6X | Not separately stated |
| U.S. online retail | 4X | Not separately stated |
| Eligible flights | Not separately stated | 7X |
| Select car rentals | Not separately stated | 7X |
| Other eligible purchases | 3X | 3X |
Category definitions and exclusions control which multiplier applies. For example, a payment made through an intermediary may not code as a direct Hilton purchase, and a merchant’s coding determines whether a purchase qualifies for a bonus category. Use the rates as a way to match the card to your normal spending, not as proof that one point value is better than another.

Free Night Rewards and spending thresholds
Surpass
Surpass awards one Free Night Reward after at least $15,000 in eligible purchases during a calendar year. The threshold resets with the calendar year. This benefit can be attractive if your ordinary spending reaches the target without shifting purchases away from a card that offers more valuable rewards.
Aspire
Aspire includes one Free Night Reward in the first card-membership year and another at each renewal. Its terms also describe an additional reward after $30,000 in calendar-year purchases and another reward after an additional $30,000 in the same year. In other words, the card combines an annual reward with spend-triggered opportunities; the exact issuance and certificate terms should be checked in the current benefit language.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA Free Night Reward does not have a fixed dollar value. Its practical value depends on where you redeem it, whether the hotel participates, the dates available, and whether you would otherwise pay cash or points for that stay. Do not move $15,000 or $30,000 of spending solely for a certificate without comparing the rewards you give up elsewhere.

How to calculate which card is worth it for you
Use a conservative, purchase-based calculation rather than adding every maximum benefit. The relevant comparison is Aspire’s additional annual fee versus the value you can actually realize beyond what Surpass provides.
- List planned Hilton stays. Record the number of nights, brands, properties, and likely room rates. Mark which stays are at participating resorts or at Waldorf Astoria and Conrad properties.
- Estimate usable credits. For Surpass, count only direct Hilton purchases you expect to make in each calendar quarter, up to the quarterly cap. For Aspire, separately estimate resort, flight, CLEAR+, and qualifying Waldorf Astoria or Conrad credits. Do not count a credit that depends on spending you would not otherwise make.
- Compare status at your actual hotels. Check whether your regular properties provide the Gold food benefit, Diamond lounge access, meaningful upgrade opportunities, or other status features. Treat space-available benefits as uncertain.
- Check the free-night path. Decide whether your ordinary annual spending reaches $15,000 for Surpass or any Aspire threshold. Include the opportunity cost of using the card instead of another rewards card.
- Match bonus categories to real spending. Use your last several months of statements to estimate Hilton, restaurant, flight, car-rental, grocery, gas, online-retail, and other eligible purchases. Apply the published multipliers only to categories you can document.
- Value points cautiously. Use your own realistic Hilton redemptions instead of assigning a universal point price. A high-value redemption you rarely make should not drive the entire calculation.
- Subtract the annual fee once. After estimating usable benefits and rewards, compare the result with each card’s listed fee. Keep first-year welcome incentives separate from the recurring annual decision.
This method prevents a common mistake: treating the maximum Aspire credits, an annual free night, and Diamond benefits as guaranteed $ value even when the cardholder does not use the qualifying purchases or hotels.
Which card fits common Hilton traveler profiles?
Choose Surpass when your priority is predictable, lower-cost Hilton value
- You want complimentary Gold status but do not regularly need Diamond-level benefits.
- You can use direct Hilton property credits during several calendar quarters.
- Your ordinary spending can reach $15,000 in a calendar year without changing your budget or sacrificing better rewards elsewhere.
- You stay at properties where Gold’s food benefit or available upgrades are sufficient.
- You prefer fewer credits and no need to coordinate resort, flight, and CLEAR+ benefits.
Choose Aspire when you can repeatedly use premium benefits
- You stay frequently at Hilton properties where Diamond’s bonus, Premium Wi-Fi, lounge access, or upgrade potential matters.
- You can naturally use resort credits in both six-month periods.
- You buy qualifying flights often enough to use quarterly flight credits.
- You would pay for CLEAR+ and can use the membership under its terms.
- You value an annual free night and can redeem it at a property and date where it replaces a meaningful cash or points expense.
- Your spending may reach the additional $30,000 thresholds without manufactured spending or budget distortion.
Consider neither card when Hilton use is occasional
If you rarely stay with Hilton, cannot use the credits, and would not redeem the free-night rewards, paying either annual fee for status may be inefficient. A no-fee or general travel card may fit better, but that is a separate comparison requiring its own terms and spending analysis.
Application and first-year checklist
- Confirm the live offer. Check the current Hilton and American Express application pages for the welcome bonus, spending deadline, annual fee, and eligibility language. The offers displayed on October 13, 2026, were shown through January 13, 2027, but offers can change before that date.
- Read the credit terms. Verify participating resorts, eligible charges, flight purchase channels, calendar periods, the CLEAR+ membership conditions, and the Waldorf Astoria or Conrad rate and booking requirement.
- Calendar the periods. Set reminders before each Surpass quarter or Aspire resort-credit half-year ends. Track credits in the account rather than assuming a qualifying charge posted correctly.
- Plan the welcome-spend deadline. Include only eligible purchases you can complete within the first six months. Do not carry expensive debt to earn points or a free night.
- Save the reward terms. Keep the current Free Night Reward rules and any expiration or redemption restrictions with your travel records, because certificate conditions can differ from ordinary points bookings.
Common mistakes that reduce the cards’ value
- Counting maximum credits as cash. The caps describe potential reimbursement, not an automatic annual payment.
- Missing a calendar period. Surpass credits are quarterly; Aspire’s resort credits are divided into six-month periods and its flight credits are quarterly.
- Assuming every Hilton charge qualifies. Direct-purchase, participating-property, and eligible-charge requirements can exclude some transactions.
- Booking the wrong Waldorf Astoria or Conrad rate. The Aspire $100 benefit requires a participating property, at least two nights, the specified benefit rate, and the required booking process.
- Expecting guaranteed upgrades or lounge access. The published status descriptions use space-available and select-property qualifications.
- Assigning a fixed value to Hilton points or a free night. Redemption value varies by property, date, and availability.
- Ignoring opportunity cost. Spending toward a certificate can be less rewarding than using another card for the same purchases.
- Using first-year bonuses to justify a permanent fee. Recalculate the recurring value after the welcome offer is gone.
Bottom line: pick the benefit pattern, not the biggest headline
Surpass is the practical choice for a Hilton guest who wants Gold status, a lower recurring fee, and a manageable Hilton credit, especially when $15,000 of annual spending is already realistic. Aspire is the stronger fit for frequent Hilton travelers who can consistently use Diamond benefits, the annual free night, resort and flight credits, CLEAR+, and the higher Hilton earning rates. Compare your expected eligible use and actual redemption habits with the fee difference; if those benefits are not part of your normal travel, Aspire’s larger advertised totals should not decide the application.
