HFM Formerly Hotforex Review: Is This Forex Trading Broker a Scam or Legit?

HFM is a legitimate forex and CFD broker group formerly known as HotForex, but client protection depends on the HFM legal entity assigned to the account.

Verdict: HFM is a legitimate, operating forex and CFD broker group, not an unlicensed scam. However, “HFM” is a brand used by several legal entities. The regulator protecting your account depends on which entity accepts you—not simply on the HFM name shown on the website.

HFM was formerly known as HotForex. The company announced the rebrand on May 2, 2022, describing it as a brand evolution rather than a shutdown. The available evidence does not support claims that HotForex disappeared after being exposed as a scam.

That does not make every HFM account equally safe. UK and Cyprus clients may receive stronger protections than clients assigned to offshore entities. HFM also has a documented €105,000 CySEC fine from 2016, and the FCA has warned about a clone operation impersonating the genuine UK firm.

HFM at a glance

Question Answer
Is HFM a real broker? Yes. HFM operates through multiple legal entities listed by financial regulators and company registries.
Was HFM formerly HotForex? Yes. The HotForex brand transitioned to HFM in May 2022.
Is every HFM account FCA regulated? No. Only accounts accepted by HF Markets (UK) Ltd fall under the FCA entity.
Does HFM accept US residents? No. HFM’s current legal documents list the United States among restricted jurisdictions.
Can HFM offer leverage of 1:2000? Its international pages advertise leverage up to 1:2000 for eligible accounts. This is not the standard leverage available to UK retail clients.
Main scam warning Clone websites and impersonators can copy HFM’s name, branding and regulatory details.

What happened to HotForex?

HotForex did not simply vanish. On May 2, 2022, the company announced that the group was moving from the HotForex name to HFM. It said the change would not affect customers’ access to the website or trading platforms.

HFM’s current regulatory pages, the CySEC register and the FCA’s information about the genuine UK company all point to a continuing broker group. The statement “HotForex was exposed as a scam and changed its name” is therefore not supported by the records reviewed for this assessment.

A rebrand is not proof that a broker is safe, though. You still need to check the legal company in your account agreement and the domain you are using before depositing money.

Which companies operate under the HFM name?

HFM is not one single globally regulated company. Its regulatory environment page lists several group entities:

Legal entity Jurisdiction and regulator Licence or registration
HF Markets (UK) Ltd United Kingdom; Financial Conduct Authority FRN 801701
HF Markets (Europe) Ltd Cyprus; Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission CySEC licence 183/12
HF Markets SA (PTY) Ltd South Africa; Financial Sector Conduct Authority FSP 46632
HF Markets (Seychelles) Ltd Seychelles; Financial Services Authority Securities Dealer licence SD015
HFM Investments Ltd Kenya; Capital Markets Authority Licence 155
HF Markets (SV) Ltd Saint Vincent and the Grenadines IBC registration 22747 IBC 2015

The Saint Vincent and the Grenadines registration is a company registration, not equivalent to authorisation by a top-tier investment regulator. The entity assigned to your account is therefore a central part of the risk assessment.

Why your HFM entity matters

A client accepted by the UK company is not in the same legal position as a client accepted by the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines company.

  • UK retail CFD clients: FCA rules generally limit leverage from 30:1 to 2:1 depending on the asset, require margin close-out at 50% of required margin and provide protection against losing more than the funds in the CFD account.
  • Cyprus clients: eligible clients and covered services may fall under the Investor Compensation Fund. Compensation is capped at the lower of 90% of the covered claim or €20,000.
  • International clients: HFM advertises leverage as high as 1:2000 on some international account pages. Higher leverage may be available, but it comes with materially greater loss risk and does not provide UK-style protection.

HFM’s global website footer identifies HF Markets (SV) Ltd, while the group separately lists UK, Cyprus and other regional entities. Do not assume that seeing an FCA or CySEC licence number on the website means your account is held by that regulated company.

How to verify the HFM entity before depositing

  1. Open the account-opening agreement or legal documents supplied during registration.
  2. Look for the exact contracting company, not just “HFM” or “HotForex.”
  3. Check that company directly in the relevant regulator’s register. For example, the FCA lists HF Markets (UK) Limited under FRN 801701, while CySEC lists HF Markets (Europe) Ltd under licence 183/12.
  4. Confirm that the website domain, email address and contact details match the regulator’s record.
  5. Do not rely solely on a licence logo, a copied registration number or a link sent by an account manager.

Clone websites and impersonation scams

The FCA warned on September 30, 2024, about HotForexMarket, a clone firm impersonating the genuine FCA-authorised HF Markets (UK) Limited. The warning identified hotforexltd.com as the clone website and said it had no connection with the genuine firm.

Clone operations often copy a legitimate company’s name, address, regulatory number and branding. As a result, a website using “HFM,” “HotForex” or even FCA number 801701 is not automatically genuine.

Before transferring money, type the broker’s official address into your browser rather than following an unsolicited link. Then compare the domain and contact information with the relevant regulator’s register. Be especially cautious if a supposed HFM representative promises guaranteed returns, asks you to pay a withdrawal “tax” to a personal wallet or pressures you to use cryptocurrency.

HFM’s regulatory history

HFM’s record is not spotless. CySEC records show that HF Markets (Europe) Ltd received a €105,000 administrative fine. The board decision was dated August 1, 2016, and the announcement was published on August 19, 2016. CySEC described the matter as non-compliance involving the Investment Services and Activities and Regulated Markets Law and related directives.

This is a relevant historical sanction and should not be omitted from a broker review. It does not, by itself, prove that HFM is currently a scam. It also does not establish that every current HFM service is compliant. The sensible conclusion is that HFM has a verifiable regulatory history that includes both current authorisations and a past sanction.

Accounts, leverage and trading conditions

HFM’s international Zero Account page currently lists MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, HFM WebTrader, mobile trading and the HFM Platform. The published specifications include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Spreads from zero on selected instruments
  • Maximum leverage of 1:2000
  • Minimum trade size of 0.01 lot
  • Maximum position size of 60 standard lots
  • Up to 500 simultaneous open orders
  • 50% margin call and 20% stop-out levels
  • Market execution
  • A published commission of $6 round turn per 100,000 currency units for listed currency pairs

There is an inconsistency in HFM’s own published information: the account-details section does not display a minimum opening deposit, while the page FAQ states a $25 minimum deposit. Treat neither figure as universal. The amount applicable to you can depend on the entity, payment method, account type and jurisdiction.

HFM says the usual minimum trade size is 0.01 lot, but lists a minimum volume of one standard lot for U.S. Oil, U.K. Oil and indices. Instrument-specific contract specifications take priority over the general account description.

“Zero spread” does not mean free trading

A zero-spread account can still involve commission, overnight financing, slippage and other costs. HFM’s Zero Account advertises spreads from zero but also lists the $6 round-turn commission for the relevant currency pairs. Compare the complete cost of a round trip rather than judging an account by its headline spread.

High leverage can magnify losses quickly

At 1:2000 leverage, a small amount of margin controls a much larger position. A relatively small adverse price movement can consume available margin and trigger a stop-out. The maximum leverage is a product feature—not evidence of better execution, stronger regulation or lower risk.

Deposits, withdrawals and verification

HFM’s published withdrawal route is:

Client Area → Fund Withdrawal

The FAQ refers to the same area as myHF area / Client Area → Withdraw. Published terms include:

Method Minimum withdrawal Typical HFM processing or delivery time
Bank transfer $100 Usually 2–10 business days
Credit or debit card $5 Usually 2–10 business days
Alternative methods Varies From instant to up to 24 hours, depending on the method

HFM says it charges no bank-wire fee and no card withdrawal fee on the listed methods, but your bank, correspondent bank or card provider may charge separately. Card withdrawals generally require a previous Visa or Mastercard deposit and are normally returned to the same card and payment processor where applicable.

Withdrawals must come from funds surplus to margin requirements. HFM’s FAQ says requests submitted before 10:00 a.m. server time are processed that business day; requests after that time are processed on the next business day. A separate withdrawal page says processing is available 24/7. Neither statement guarantees that money will arrive in your bank account or card immediately.

For individual live-account verification, HFM requires at least:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. An unexpired, coloured proof-of-identification document, such as a passport, national identity card or driving licence.
  2. A proof-of-address document, such as a bank statement or utility bill issued within the previous six months.

HFM says its verification department checks documents within 48 hours and that deposits are credited only after documents are approved and the myHF area is fully activated. A common avoidable problem is a mismatch between the name on the identity document and the name on the proof of address.

Operational details worth knowing

Inactive accounts may be archived

The current account-opening agreement for HF Markets (SV) Ltd says an account may be archived after 60 calendar days without trading or a financial transaction, regardless of its balance. Pending orders may be deleted if the account cannot support them after archiving. HFM says an archived account can be reinstated on request, subject to its discretion.

Spreads may widen around rollover

HFM warns that spreads can widen and liquidity can fall between 23:55 and 00:05 server time during daily bank rollover. Slippage may increase and orders may fail to execute if liquidity is inadequate.

HFM lists server time as GMT+2 in winter and GMT+3 in summer, with the daylight-saving period running from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October. Traders holding positions through this window should account for wider spreads and financing adjustments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Swap-free status is conditional

HFM offers swap-free conditions on certain accounts, but its terms allow the company to remove that status, apply swaps retroactively and close the account or confiscate profits if it decides the account has breached the relevant conditions. “Swap-free” should not be treated as a permanent, unconditional waiver of financing costs.

Volume limits can produce “Off quote” errors

HFM’s Terms of Business allow it to change trading-volume limits for instruments without prior notice. If an order exceeds the applicable limit, it may be declined and the platform may display an “Off quote” message. That error is not automatically evidence of a scam or a platform failure; it can result from volume restrictions or inadequate liquidity.

Who should and should not consider HFM?

HFM may appeal to experienced traders who understand CFDs, margin, overnight financing and the differences between regulatory jurisdictions. Its platform range, small stated minimum trade size and international leverage offering may be useful to some eligible clients.

It is a poor fit for anyone who treats maximum leverage as a benefit without understanding the downside, expects guaranteed profits or is unwilling to verify the legal entity holding the account. It is also unavailable to US residents and residents of several other restricted jurisdictions, including Canada, Sudan, Syria, Iran, North Korea, the UAE and Türkiye according to HFM’s current legal-documentation page.

FAQ

Is HFM a scam?

The evidence reviewed does not support calling HFM a scam. It is a real, operating forex and CFD brokerage group with entities listed by several regulators. The main risks are jurisdiction-dependent protection, leverage and clone websites impersonating the genuine brand.

Is HFM the same company as HotForex?

HFM is the successor brand to HotForex. The company announced the transition on May 2, 2022, and said customers’ website and trading-platform access would not be affected.

Is HFM regulated by the FCA?

HF Markets (UK) Ltd is authorised by the FCA under firm reference number 801701. That does not mean every HFM customer is onboarded by the UK entity or receives FCA protections.

Does HFM accept clients from the United States?

No. HFM’s current legal-documentation page states that it does not offer services to US residents, along with residents of several other restricted jurisdictions.

What is the minimum deposit at HFM?

The international Zero Account page is inconsistent: its account-details section does not show a minimum opening deposit, while its FAQ states $25. The applicable minimum can vary by entity, account and payment method.

How do I withdraw money from HFM?

Log in and go to Client Area → Fund Withdrawal. HFM also calls this myHF area / Client Area → Withdraw. The money must be surplus to margin requirements, and card withdrawals generally return to the card used for the deposit.

Does HFM offer zero-spread trading?

The Zero Account advertises spreads from zero on selected instruments, but it also lists commissions. Zero spread does not mean zero total cost; financing, slippage and instrument-specific charges may apply.

What should I check before opening an HFM account?

Check the exact legal entity in the account agreement, verify it in the relevant regulator’s register, confirm the domain and contact details, and understand the leverage, margin-close-out, compensation and negative-balance rules that apply to that entity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

HFM is legitimate, but it is not one uniform regulatory proposition. The former HotForex brand continues to operate through multiple HFM entities, including FCA- and CySEC-regulated companies as well as offshore entities. That makes the contracting company in your account agreement more important than the logo on the homepage.

Do not describe HFM as a worldwide FCA-regulated broker, and do not assume Cyprus compensation applies to every customer. Verify the official domain to avoid the clone websites identified by the FCA, understand the costs behind “zero spreads,” and treat 1:2000 leverage as a high-risk facility rather than a safety feature.
