The eight Nifty 50 stocks with negative five-year returns
An Economic Times report published on October 15, 2026 identified these eight stocks as having negative returns over the broad five-year comparison period. The percentages are approximate because the report uses terms such as “around,” “nearly” and “more than.”

HDFC Bank’s reported five-year loss was about 16%, while the Nifty 50 rose more than 23% over the same broad period. That gap is the key point for a holdings review: owning a large, widely held index constituent did not ensure participation in the benchmark’s advance.
#1 Best Overall
Shorter periods show that the result depends heavily on the measurement date. As of October 15, 2026, the report described HDFC Bank as down more than 28% year to date, more than 27% over one year and over 7% over three years. These figures can change with every trading session and should not be treated as a forecast.
Why the stocks lagged
The report linked the broader weakness to tariff uncertainty, the war in the Middle East, a falling rupee, rising bond yields and selling by foreign investors. Those forces can affect sectors differently: technology exporters may react to global demand and currency moves, while consumer, financial and energy stocks respond to domestic growth, rates and flows.

HDFC Bank-specific concerns
For HDFC Bank, the cited explanation centered on investor concerns about governance. Outlook Money also described leadership exits, governance questions, margin pressure and foreign-investor selling as factors behind the stock’s lag. The same account noted a 1:1 bonus in 2025 and annual dividends during the period. Those are reported developments that help explain the historical return; they do not establish what the bank will earn next.

A price chart and an investor’s actual return can differ. ReturnScreener’s HDFC Bank five-year calculation uses historical NSE closing prices adjusted for dividends and stock splits. That produces a total-return measure: cash dividends and split adjustments are incorporated into the series. An unadjusted price-only chart will show a different percentage and should not be compared with the adjusted figure as if they were identical.

Use a consistent comparison
- Set the same start and end dates for HDFC Bank, each stock and the Nifty 50.
- Use either price returns for every security or dividend- and split-adjusted total returns for every security.
- Record the measurement date, because market prices and the resulting percentages move daily.
- Compare both the absolute return and the return relative to the Nifty 50.
- Review one-year, three-year, year-to-date and five-year windows separately rather than treating one period as a complete investment thesis.
What to do if you own one of the eight
1. Verify your personal result
Your holding-period return depends on purchase dates, additional buys, sales, dividends received, taxes and charges. A headline five-year figure is a market-period statistic, not a statement of every shareholder’s account.
2. Separate business analysis from the chart
Examine earnings growth, margins, balance-sheet strength, capital allocation and governance. For a bank, that includes asset quality, provisioning, deposit growth and leadership stability; for other sectors, the relevant operating drivers differ.

3. Test the benchmark and portfolio role
Ask whether the stock was intended as a long-term core holding, a sector exposure or a concentrated bet. A stock can underperform the index while still serving a deliberate portfolio purpose, but an unintended concentration may require a different risk decision.

4. Avoid a mechanical sell or average-down rule
A past decline alone does not prove that a recovery is due, nor does it prove that the business is permanently impaired. Base any change on your objectives, time horizon, valuation assumptions and ability to tolerate further losses.
