GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B are complementary GST filings, not substitutes. GSTR-1 is the supplier-side statement of outward supplies, carrying invoice and supply details. GSTR-3B is the summary return in which you report tax liability, eligible input tax credit (ITC), and payment. In the usual monthly cycle, GSTR-1 is due on the 11th of the following month and GSTR-3B on the 20th, subject to taxpayer category, location, government extensions, and the date shown for your period on the GST Portal.

Quarterly filers generally furnish GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B under the QRMP framework, while paying tax monthly. The filing order matters: the same-period GSTR-1 must be filed before GSTR-3B, and earlier defaults can block a new return. The sections below explain what belongs in each form, how the calendars work, how corrections and nil returns differ, and how to avoid common filing failures.

GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B at a glance

Dimension GSTR-1 GSTR-3B
Main job Statement of outward supplies, with invoice-level and summary information. Summary return for outward-supply values, ITC, tax liability, and tax payment.
Typical data B2B and specified B2C invoices, exports, SEZ and deemed exports, credit and debit notes, advances, amendments, exempt or nil-rated supplies, HSN/SAC summaries, and applicable e-commerce supplies. Consolidated liability and ITC figures, payment status, and values supported by system-generated data from GSTR-1, IFF, GSTR-1A, and GSTR-2B.
Standard monthly deadline 11th of the succeeding month, unless extended by notification. 20th of the succeeding month for normal taxpayers in the GST Portal welcome kit; confirm the current period-specific date.
Standard quarterly deadline 13th of the month after the quarter, unless extended. Not stated in a single general schedule; under QRMP, the date depends on taxpayer category and principal place of business.
Filing sequence Must be filed before same-period GSTR-3B. Same-period GSTR-1 must be filed before this return can be filed.
Corrections GSTR-1A can optionally add or amend same-period details until the related GSTR-3B is filed; later corrections follow statutory cutoffs. Receives the relevant GSTR-1A changes through auto-population, but figures still require review against books and ITC eligibility.
Nil period A nil GSTR-1 is still required when the taxpayer is otherwise required to file it. A nil return is available only when the GST Portal’s no-supply, no-liability, no-data, no-entry, and no-outstanding-interest-or-late-fee conditions are met.

The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 FAQ describes Form GSTR-1 as a “monthly/quarterly Statement of Outward Supplies” furnished by normal and casual registered taxpayers making outward supplies of goods, services, or both. That description captures the central distinction: GSTR-1 explains the transactions, while GSTR-3B reports the resulting tax position in summary form.

What GSTR-1 reports

GSTR-1 is prepared from the supplier’s outward-supply records. Its purpose is to communicate transaction details that can flow to recipients’ purchase-related statements and support the tax liability later summarized in GSTR-3B. It is not a payment form by itself.

Invoice and recipient details

For business-to-business supplies, GSTR-1 generally captures invoice-level information for registered recipients. Specified inter-state supplies to unregistered consumers are also reported in the applicable sections. The details must identify the nature of the supply, the recipient category, taxable value, and tax components required by the relevant table in the portal.

Exports, SEZ supplies, and deemed exports

Export supplies, supplies to special economic zones, and deemed exports have dedicated reporting treatment. The correct classification matters because the recipient, place of supply, tax payment method, and supporting documentation can differ from an ordinary domestic invoice.

Credit notes, debit notes, advances, and amendments

GSTR-1 includes credit and debit notes and permits reporting of advances and their subsequent adjustments where applicable. Amendments are used when an earlier outward-supply record needs correction. Keep the original invoice or note reference and the amended values together in your working papers so that the change can be traced.

Summary and classification sections

Not every supply is entered as a full invoice. GSTR-1 also includes summarized reporting for relevant unregistered supplies, nil-rated, exempt, and non-GST supplies, plus HSN or SAC summaries. Applicable e-commerce supplies have their own reporting requirements. The exact tables visible to you depend on the transactions and registration profile for the period.

What GSTR-3B reports

GSTR-3B is the summary-side return. It brings together outward-supply liability, eligible and ineligible ITC components shown in the return, and the tax payment or offset position. It does not replace the invoice-level statement in GSTR-1.

System-generated information is a starting point

The GST Portal provides a system-generated GSTR-3B summary using information from GSTR-1, IFF, GSTR-1A, and GSTR-2B. These figures are intended to help preparation, not to eliminate the taxpayer’s responsibility to verify them. Compare the populated amounts with the books, sales register, purchase records, reverse-charge positions, reversals, and the ITC rules that apply to your facts before filing.

Why the two forms must agree

GSTR-1 supplies the detailed outward-supply data from which liability can be understood. GSTR-3B reports that liability in summarized form and adds the ITC and payment side. Differences can arise from timing, amendments, credit notes, advances, place-of-supply classification, or an ineligible ITC entry. A difference should be explained and corrected through the permitted mechanism rather than ignored.

Due dates: monthly, quarterly, and extended calendars

Monthly GSTR-1

The official GSTR-1 FAQ states that monthly filers should furnish GSTR-1 by the 11th day of the succeeding month. For example, a return for April is ordinarily due on 11 May. The date can change when the government issues an extension, so the standard date is a planning rule, not a guarantee for every tax period.

Quarterly GSTR-1

Quarterly filers ordinarily furnish GSTR-1 by the 13th day of the month following the quarter. A January–March quarter would therefore normally be due on 13 April. Confirm whether an extension or a special notification applies to the relevant quarter.

Monthly GSTR-3B

The GST Portal welcome kit lists the 20th of the following month as the general monthly GSTR-3B date for normal taxpayers. A March return would ordinarily fall due on 20 April. Because the welcome kit is general guidance and dates can be extended, use the period-specific due-date display on the GST Portal and current notifications before filing.

Quarterly GSTR-3B under QRMP

QRMP participants furnish GSTR-3B quarterly, but the due date is tied to the taxpayer category and principal place of business. There is no single quarterly date that safely applies to every QRMP taxpayer. Check the Returns Dashboard and the applicable notification for the registration’s state or union territory and category.

Due-date controls for a finance calendar

  • Record the tax period, filing frequency, registration state or union territory, and taxpayer category for each GSTIN.
  • Enter the standard date as an internal target, leaving time for reconciliation and payment before the legal deadline.
  • Recheck the GST Portal for extensions or changed dates before authorizing submission.
  • Save the filed ARN, challan or payment reference, and return-generation confirmation with the period’s records.

Who files and how filing frequency changes the work

GSTR-1 is intended for normal and casual registered taxpayers making outward supplies, subject to the applicable exclusions and filing rules. A taxpayer with no outward business activity is not automatically excused from a required GSTR-1 filing; the portal states that a nil statement must still be filed when the taxpayer is required to furnish GSTR-1.

Under QRMP, eligible taxpayers file both GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B quarterly while paying tax monthly through challans. The GST Portal describes a PAN-based aggregate annual turnover limit of up to ₹5 crore in the current and preceding financial year, where applicable, and requires the last due GSTR-3B to have been filed. Eligibility and enrollment conditions can change by financial year, so confirm them for the year in question rather than carrying forward an old assumption.

QRMP, monthly payments, and the optional IFF

How QRMP changes the cadence

QRMP reduces the number of full returns for eligible taxpayers, but it does not eliminate monthly cash-flow planning. Tax is paid monthly through challans, and the quarterly GSTR-3B later reports the period’s consolidated summary. The quarterly GSTR-1 contains the outward-supply statement for the quarter.

When IFF is useful

The optional Invoice Furnishing Facility (IFF) is available to QRMP taxpayers during the first two months of a quarter. It lets them furnish selected outward-supply details earlier, chiefly so recipients can receive invoice information sooner. IFF does not turn QRMP into monthly GSTR-1 filing for all transactions: remaining details are reported in the quarterly GSTR-1.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deciding whether to use IFF

  • Use IFF when important B2B customers need eligible invoice details earlier for their purchase-side reconciliation.
  • Do not upload only a partial internal ledger and assume it represents the entire quarter; define which selected invoices are being furnished and retain the selection record.
  • Reconcile IFF entries with the eventual quarterly GSTR-1 so the same invoice is not omitted, duplicated, or amended inconsistently.

Filing order and portal blocks

The GST Portal requires GSTR-1 for a tax period to be filed before GSTR-3B for that same period. The dependency also works across prior periods: an unfiled prior-period GSTR-1 can block the current GSTR-1, an unfiled same-period GSTR-1 can block GSTR-3B, and an unfiled previous GSTR-3B can block GSTR-1.

  1. Clear earlier defaults. Review the Returns Dashboard for every earlier period that could be blocking the current return. File or otherwise resolve the outstanding return before starting the new sequence.
  2. Close the outward-supply ledger. Reconcile invoices, notes, exports, SEZ supplies, advances, amendments, exempt or nil-rated supplies, and HSN/SAC summaries.
  3. File GSTR-1. Validate the summary against the detailed records, submit the return, and retain the acknowledgment reference.
  4. Review GSTR-1A if available. If an omission or error is found, use the optional same-period amendment facility before filing GSTR-3B.
  5. Prepare GSTR-3B. Check system-generated values, ITC eligibility, liability, reversals, and payment amounts against the books.
  6. Pay and file GSTR-3B. Confirm the offset or challan position, submit the return, and store the final filing evidence.

Starting with GSTR-3B can lead to a portal block even when the figures are ready. Treat GSTR-1 as the first filing checkpoint for each period.

GSTR-1A: the same-period correction window

GSTR-1A is an optional facility for adding or amending details in the same tax period. It becomes available after GSTR-1 is filed or its due date arrives, whichever is later, and remains available only until the related GSTR-3B is filed.

What it can fix

Use GSTR-1A for an omitted outward-supply record or an incorrect same-period detail discovered after GSTR-1. Review the corrected invoice, tax value, recipient information, and any downstream effect before submitting the change.

What happens after submission

Updates made through GSTR-1A auto-populate into the same-period GSTR-3B. The GST Portal also cautions that these corrections may affect the recipient’s ITC in the next tax period’s GSTR-2B. Tell affected customers about material changes so their reconciliation does not rely on the earlier record.

When the window is closed

Once the related GSTR-3B has been filed, GSTR-1A is no longer available for that period. Later corrections must follow the statutory amendment and reporting cutoffs that apply to the transaction. Do not postpone a known error on the assumption that the same-period window will remain open.

Nil GSTR-1 versus nil GSTR-3B

Nil GSTR-1

GSTR-1 remains required for a taxpayer who is otherwise required to file it, even when there was no business activity during the period. “No invoices” does not by itself remove the filing obligation. Submit the nil statement within the applicable monthly or quarterly deadline.

Nil GSTR-3B

The portal permits a nil GSTR-3B only when its eligibility checks are satisfied. The relevant conditions include no outward supplies, no inward supplies that create liability, no tax liability, no relevant auto-populated data, no manual entries, and no outstanding interest or late fee. If any of these conditions fails, the return may need figures and payment rather than a nil submission.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical nil-return check

  • Confirm that the sales and purchase ledgers contain no transaction requiring reporting.
  • Check whether reverse-charge liability or another inward-supply event exists.
  • Review system-generated values before selecting the nil option.
  • Ensure no manual value has been entered in a field that makes nil filing unavailable.
  • Resolve any displayed interest or late-fee balance first.

Preparing each return without creating a mismatch

Build one period-close file

Use a single period folder or electronic workpaper containing the sales register, purchase and ITC reconciliation, credit and debit notes, export or SEZ evidence, advance adjustments, payment records, and the filed return acknowledgments. The goal is not merely document storage; it is a traceable link from each GSTR-1 detail to the summarized GSTR-3B value.

Reconcile outward supplies

Compare the outward-supply register with the GSTR-1 draft by invoice number, date, recipient GSTIN where relevant, place of supply, taxable value, tax rate, and tax amount. Investigate duplicate invoices, missing notes, canceled documents, and amendments before filing.

Reconcile ITC and liability

Compare the GSTR-3B system-generated summary with the books and GSTR-2B. Separate eligible ITC from blocked or otherwise ineligible amounts, identify reversals, and document any timing difference. Auto-population is a control aid, not proof that every amount is claimable.

Use the filing acknowledgment as the final control

A saved draft is not a filed return. Keep the acknowledgment reference, date and time of filing, payment or challan details, and the submitted-period copy together. This evidence is particularly important when a deadline is close or a portal extension has been announced.

Common mistakes and how to recover

Filing GSTR-3B before GSTR-1

Symptom: the portal prevents GSTR-3B submission. Fix: file the same-period GSTR-1 first, after clearing any earlier GSTR-1 default that is also blocking the sequence.

Ignoring an earlier unfiled return

Symptom: the current return is unavailable even though its data is ready. Fix: inspect prior periods on the Returns Dashboard and resolve the oldest blocking return before retrying.

Treating auto-populated figures as final

Symptom: GSTR-3B contains a value that does not match the books or ITC policy. Fix: reconcile the system-generated summary, correct the source data where permitted, and enter only the amount supported by the records and eligibility rules.

Missing the GSTR-1A window

Symptom: an outward-supply error is found after GSTR-3B has been filed. Fix: GSTR-1A can no longer be used for that period; apply the statutory amendment route and cutoff that governs the transaction, and communicate any recipient impact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming QRMP means no monthly cash planning

Symptom: the quarterly return is ready but the monthly tax funding was not arranged. Fix: track monthly challan payments separately and reconcile them to the quarterly GSTR-3B before filing.

Selecting nil filing without checking portal conditions

Symptom: the nil option is unavailable or a liability appears after selection. Fix: check for auto-populated data, reverse-charge or other liability, manual entries, interest, and late fee; file the appropriate non-nil return when any condition fails.

Choosing a preparation method

The GST Portal permits GSTR-1 preparation through direct online entry, the Returns Offline Tool, or third-party application-service-provider applications connected through GST Suvidha Providers. The choice affects data-entry efficiency, not the underlying filing obligation. Whichever method you use, retain an export or working copy that can be reconciled to the filed return and acknowledgment.

A period-end checklist

  • Confirm whether the GSTIN is monthly or quarterly for the period.
  • Check the current portal due date and any extension notification.
  • Review earlier GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B defaults that could block filing.
  • Close the outward-supply register and classify invoices, notes, exports, SEZ supplies, advances, amendments, and exempt or nil-rated transactions.
  • Prepare GSTR-1 and compare its summaries with the books.
  • File GSTR-1 before same-period GSTR-3B.
  • Use GSTR-1A for eligible same-period additions or amendments before filing GSTR-3B.
  • Reconcile GSTR-3B’s generated values with GSTR-1, IFF, GSTR-1A, GSTR-2B, and the books.
  • Verify ITC eligibility, reversals, liability, payment, interest, and late fee.
  • Save the final acknowledgments, challans, and submitted return copies.

How to decide which deadline applies

  1. Identify filing frequency. If the registration is monthly, start with the 11th for GSTR-1 and 20th for monthly GSTR-3B as general planning dates. If it is quarterly, use the 13th for GSTR-1 and the applicable QRMP schedule for GSTR-3B.
  2. Check the registration’s category and location. QRMP GSTR-3B dates are not universal; the principal place of business and taxpayer category matter.
  3. Check the live portal date. Government extensions and period-specific notices override a general welcome-kit calendar.
  4. Plan backward from filing. Set an internal reconciliation deadline before the legal due date so errors can be corrected while GSTR-1A is still available, where applicable.

These steps separate the two questions that are often confused: “When must the outward-supply statement be filed?” and “When must the summarized liability, ITC, and payment return be filed?” The first points to GSTR-1; the second points to GSTR-3B.

Important qualification

This is general filing information, not individualized tax advice. Exact applicability can depend on the GST registration’s filing category, principal place of business, tax period, turnover, transactions, and government notifications. Verify the current due date and filing eligibility on the GST Portal before submission, and obtain professional advice for unusual transactions, disputed ITC, or amendment questions.
