Some GST registration amendments are now processed by the portal without a proper officer’s approval. The Press Information Bureau FAQ published on 9 October 2026 classifies changes to a business’s legal name, constitution and Additional Place of Business (APoB) as non-core amendments: file Form GST REG-14, complete PAN validation and the system processes them automatically. A change to the Principal Place of Business (PPoB) is automatic only when the registration was obtained under Rule 14A. Registrations under the normal Rule 9 route still require officer action, generally within 15 days, with additional reply deadlines if a discrepancy is found.
Can GST registration amendments be approved automatically without officer approval?
Yes, but only for specified non-core changes and for PPoB amendments linked to a Rule 14A registration. Automatic processing begins after a correctly submitted REG-14 application passes the portal’s validation checks; it does not remove document, PAN, Aadhaar or signing requirements.

The October 2026 change covers amendments to the registered legal name, constitution of the business and APoB. The system updates these fields after successful submission and PAN validation. For APoB applications, the FAQ states that the new location is added to the applicant’s registration through system processing rather than a manual approval.
| Amendment route | Typical examples | Officer approval | Form | Timing stated by authorities | Main risk point |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic non-core amendment | Legal name, constitution, APoB | Not required after system validation | REG-14 | System processing after successful submission | PAN or document validation failure |
| Rule 14A PPoB amendment | Principal place for a Rule 14A registration | Not required after system validation | REG-14 | System processing after successful submission | Aadhaar verification and Rule 14A eligibility |
| Normal Rule 9 PPoB amendment | Principal place for a conventional registration | Required | REG-14 | Officer action within 15 days; notice and reply stages may extend the process | Document discrepancy or officer query |
“Automatic” therefore describes the approval path, not a promise that every application is completed immediately or without checks.

How do I amend a GST legal name, constitution or additional place of business?
Use the GST common portal and file Form GST REG-14 with the information and evidence applicable to the amendment.
- Choose the amendment. Select the legal-name, constitution or APoB change in the registration amendment service.
- Enter the revised details. Ensure the business information is consistent with the PAN record and the supporting document.
- Upload prescribed proof. An APoB amendment requires proof of the place of business. Use the document type accepted for that location and amendment.
- Submit REG-14. Complete the portal’s electronic authentication or signing step and submit the application.
- Allow validation to finish. For the covered non-core amendments, the system processes the application after successful submission and PAN validation.
If you need to add more than one APoB, the 9 October 2026 FAQ says you do not have to wait for an earlier APoB amendment to finish before filing another. Each submission still needs accurate details and the prescribed proof.

Yes. A PPoB amendment is system-processed when the GST registration was granted under Rule 14A and the REG-14 application includes the prescribed PPoB evidence. The same type of amendment remains officer-controlled for a normal Rule 9 registration.

Who is covered by Rule 14A?
Notification No. 18/2025-Central Tax introduced the simplified framework with effect from 1 November 2025. Rule 14A is designed for small taxpayers whose monthly B2B output-tax liability is ₹2.5 lakh or less. The portal manual requires the applicant to select Rule 14A when within that ceiling and to complete Aadhaar authentication.
The 2025 framework also provides electronic registration within three working days under the new Rule 9A, and Rule 14A registrations are granted electronically within three working days after successful Aadhaar authentication. Those registration-grant timelines explain why the amendment system treats a Rule 14A PPoB differently; they do not convert every GST registration into an automatic amendment route.
How long does a normal GST principal-place amendment take?
For a taxpayer registered under Rule 9, the proper officer should approve a PPoB amendment within 15 days when the application has no discrepancy. If the officer identifies a discrepancy, the officer should issue a show-cause notice within that 15-day window.

- Officer review: The application is examined during the 15-day period.
- Notice, if needed: A discrepancy notice is issued rather than an immediate approval.
- Applicant response: The applicant has seven working days to reply.
- Final officer action: The officer then has seven working days to act on the reply.
Keep the property, occupancy and ownership or lease evidence consistent with the address entered in REG-14. A mismatch can move the application from the ordinary approval path into the notice-and-reply process.
What Aadhaar and document checks can stop an amendment?
Aadhaar verification may be completed by OTP or through biometrics. Where biometric verification is triggered, the relevant promoters, partners or primary authorised signatory must visit the designated GST Suvidha Kendra for biometric and document verification. If the required visit or verification is not completed, the application reference number (ARN) is not generated.
CBIC Instruction No. 03/2025-GST directs officers to use the indicative document list associated with Form REG-01, accept one sufficient ownership document and avoid demanding unprescribed originals or additional lessor-identity documents. Applicants should therefore provide a complete prescribed document rather than multiple unnecessary papers, while retaining originals in case a lawful verification is required.

Do companies and LLPs need a DSC dongle?
Companies and LLPs must use digital-signature-certificate (DSC) signing for the relevant GST submission path. The GST portal manual instructs the authorised user to insert the DSC token, run the signing utility and complete the signature step. A compatible USB DSC dongle or token is consequently a practical prerequisite for those entities; Aadhaar-based electronic verification may apply to other applicant categories.
Does GST deemed approval apply to every amendment?
No single deemed-approval deadline applies to every GST application. Consolidated Rule 9 provides different windows depending on whether the applicant follows Aadhaar and risk-based verification, whether physical verification is ordered and whether the application follows a clarification. The applicable period must be determined from the route and status of the particular application rather than assumed from a universal number of days.
What should I check before submitting REG-14?
- Confirm whether the registration is under Rule 14A or the normal Rule 9 route, especially for a PPoB change.
- For Rule 14A, verify that monthly B2B output-tax liability is within the ₹2.5 lakh ceiling and prepare for Aadhaar authentication.
- Match the legal name and PAN details exactly so system validation does not fail.
- Use the prescribed proof for every APoB or PPoB address.
- Arrange a working DSC token and signing utility if the applicant is a company or LLP.
- If biometric verification is assigned, schedule the required GST Suvidha Kendra visit before expecting an ARN.
- For a normal Rule 9 PPoB amendment, monitor the portal for a notice and be ready to reply within seven working days.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does automatic GST amendment processing mean the updated certificate appears instantly?
Not necessarily. The portal must first accept the REG-14 submission and complete the relevant validation, and any failed authentication or document check can interrupt processing. Download or view the amended registration only after the portal records the change.

What happens if my PAN details do not validate during an amendment?
The automatic path cannot complete until the identity data is corrected or otherwise validated. Check that the legal name and PAN information in the amendment matches the underlying PAN record before submitting a fresh or corrected application.
Is Aadhaar authentication required for every GST registration amendment?
The Rule 14A route specifically requires Aadhaar authentication, while other applicants may follow different electronic or biometric verification paths. The portal determines the applicable verification step from the registration type and risk checks.
