If the GST portal selects your case after you opt for Aadhaar authentication, you may have to visit the notified facilitation centre shown in your portal message for biometric Aadhaar authentication, a photograph and verification of the original documents uploaded with Form GST REG-01.
The practical rule is simple: follow the centre, appointment link, named attendees and deadline displayed in your own GST portal account. State rollout and logistics have changed over time, so a dated advisory from another state is not a substitute for your case-specific notice.

What GST biometric verification means
Rule 8 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Rules, 2017 allows the GST system to identify applicants for additional verification using data analysis and risk parameters. The process applies to applicants who opted for Aadhaar authentication and whose applications are selected by the portal. It is therefore different from a routine appointment imposed on every new registration applicant.
For a selected case, the verification generally combines three checks at a notified facilitation centre, often called a GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK): biometric Aadhaar authentication, a photograph and comparison of original documents with the files uploaded in REG-01. The exact people who must attend and the centre to use come from the application-specific portal instructions.

Rule 8(4A) states that “the application shall be deemed to be complete only after completion of the process laid down under this proviso.” Read the current rule on the CBIC/Government of India GST rules page.
Who is asked to attend?
Applicants who are selected by the portal
The portal can select a case after the applicant chooses Aadhaar authentication. Selection is risk-based and system-driven; the fact that you submitted a registration application does not by itself mean that a biometric visit will be required. A portal message or task will tell you whether your case has been selected and what action is pending.
Individual applicants
For an individual applicant, the rule refers to the applicant completing the prescribed Aadhaar and biometric procedure. Bring the identity and supporting originals associated with that application, rather than assuming that another person can attend in your place.

Companies, firms and other non-individual applicants
For a non-individual applicant, Rule 8 refers to the individuals notified in relation to that applicant under the Act, including persons covered by section 25(6C). Depending on the constitution and the portal instruction, this may involve a promoter, partner, primary authorised signatory or another notified individual. Do not choose attendees from a generic checklist: use the names shown in your application message or obtain clarification from the relevant GST authority.
| Application situation | What the applicant should expect | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Not selected for biometric verification | No biometric-centre appointment is created by this conditional process. | Continue with the normal portal workflow and respond to any separate notice. |
| Selected after Aadhaar authentication is opted for | The portal can require biometric Aadhaar authentication, a photograph and original-document verification at the notified centre. | Use the appointment link, centre and attendee details in the portal message. |
| Non-individual applicant selected | The rule applies to the individuals notified for that applicant, not automatically to every employee or stakeholder. | Confirm the named promoter, partner, signatory or other notified person before booking. |
The Rule 8 deadline: what 15 days does and does not mean
Aadhaar authentication must be completed while submitting Part B of Form GST REG-01 or within 15 days after Part B is submitted, whichever is earlier. This is a legal timing rule under Rule 8, not a promise that a centre will have an appointment slot whenever you want one.
The 15-day period also does not guarantee that the GST registration will be approved in that time. Verification and approval are governed separately under Rule 9, and an application can be sent through an additional-review route. Keep the appointment and document work moving early enough to deal with a centre instruction or a clarification request before the applicable deadline.
The CBIC text of Rule 8 is the controlling source for the deadline and authentication provisos.
What happens, step by step
1. Submit Part B and monitor the portal
Complete the registration application in Form GST REG-01 and submit Part B. If Aadhaar authentication was selected, watch the GST portal account, registered email and mobile notifications for a message that identifies whether additional biometric verification is required. A message may contain a booking link and the centre or jurisdiction to use.
2. Open the case-specific appointment instructions
Use the link and location in your own portal message. Do not rely on an old list of centres, a social-media post or another applicant’s appointment details. State implementation and centre arrangements can differ, and the portal instruction is the operational direction for your case.
3. Confirm the people who must appear
Check whether the notice names you personally or one or more individuals connected with a non-individual applicant. If the selected attendee is unclear, contact the state GST office or the GSK identified in the message before the Rule 8 window closes. Treat this as practical case-management advice, not as a replacement for the rule or a separate statutory form.

4. Attend the notified GST Suvidha Kendra
Take the original versions of the documents uploaded with REG-01. The centre uses them to compare the physical originals with the electronic application. Keep the copies or electronic files available as a cross-check, but do not assume a photocopy alone satisfies an instruction to produce originals.
5. Complete biometrics and the photograph
The prescribed process includes Aadhaar biometric authentication and capture of a photograph. Follow the centre’s identity-check instructions and make sure the person attending is the person notified for the application.
6. Wait for the application to move through the GST process
Under Rule 8, the registration application is deemed complete only after the required verification process is completed. That completion is not the same as a registration grant. The officer’s verification and approval steps remain subject to Rule 9, including any additional review or clarification that the application may require. See the CBIC text of Rule 9.
How to prepare before booking or attending
Collect the originals that match REG-01
- Print or review the final REG-01 submission so you know exactly which files were uploaded.
- Bring the original versions of those documents for comparison at the centre.
- Check names, addresses, dates and entity details before attending; a mismatch can require clarification.
- Do not create a universal “GST biometric document list.” The required originals depend on the applicant’s constitution, the documents uploaded and the state or case instruction.
Confirm the correct attendee
- For an individual application, confirm whether the applicant must appear personally.
- For a company, partnership or other non-individual, read the named-person instruction carefully and identify the promoter, partner, authorised signatory or other notified individual listed for the case.
- If the message is ambiguous, ask the relevant GST authority before the appointment rather than sending an unlisted substitute.
Save the appointment evidence
- Keep the portal message, booking confirmation, centre address, jurisdiction and appointment date together.
- Use the current link in the portal rather than an older bookmark.
- Allow time for travel and for the centre to inspect several originals; the official materials do not establish a standard appointment duration.
Check the timing every day until the task is complete
The legal window runs from submission of Part B and ends at the earlier Rule 8 trigger described above. A pending appointment, an unanswered portal message or a missing original does not automatically extend that window. If a slot or instruction is unavailable, document the problem and contact the relevant state GST authority promptly.
What the centre checks
Aadhaar identity and biometrics
The selected person’s Aadhaar authentication is performed through the notified process. The rule does not turn the applicant’s own computer or phone into an approved biometric station; the described check takes place through the notified facilitation arrangement.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Photograph capture
The procedure includes capturing a photograph as part of the verification record. Follow the centre’s instructions for the image and identity check.
Original documents
The centre checks original copies of documents uploaded with REG-01. Because the rule and advisory describe comparison with uploaded documents rather than a single nationwide list, the safest preparation is to bring every relevant original used in the application and review the case notice for extra instructions.
State rollout and why old lists can mislead you
Biometric Aadhaar authentication was introduced in phases. GSTN’s April–June 2024 functionality update records that the pilot began in Puducherry on August 30, 2023, was extended to Gujarat, and was enabled for new-registration applicants identified as high risk in Andhra Pradesh at the time of that update. Those statements describe the rollout at that date; they are not a current, nationwide state list.
A GST Portal advisory dated December 15, 2024 describes the portal-identification, appointment-booking and GSK process for applicants in Chhattisgarh, Goa and Mizoram. It is useful for understanding the sequence in those states as described then, but it does not establish today’s arrangements everywhere. Read the advisory at the Maharashtra GST-hosted GST Portal notice.

A quick decision guide for applicants
- Your portal shows no Aadhaar or biometric task: continue the ordinary registration workflow, while responding to any separate notice. Do not book a GSK visit merely because another applicant had one.
- Your portal asks for Aadhaar authentication but does not mention biometrics: complete the Aadhaar step in the manner shown on the portal and retain the confirmation. Watch for a later task, because portal instructions control the next action.
- Your portal specifically requires biometric verification: open the appointment link immediately, note the named individuals and save the centre details. Start gathering originals before selecting a slot.
- The message names a non-individual’s representatives: compare those names with the promoter, partner, primary authorised signatory or other person notified under the application. Ask the jurisdictional authority if the named person cannot attend.
- The message conflicts with an older advisory: follow the current case-specific portal message and seek confirmation from the relevant GST authority. Dated state notices explain historical implementation, not a guaranteed current procedure.
Appointment-day checklist
Before leaving, check that the attending person is the one identified in the portal instruction, the appointment confirmation is saved or printed, and the centre address and jurisdiction are correct. Carry the original versions of every document uploaded with REG-01 that is relevant to the applicant’s constitution. It is sensible to keep a copy or offline electronic version for reference, but that does not replace an original when the centre asks for one.

Review spellings, entity names, addresses, dates and identification details against the submitted application. If an original differs from the uploaded file, do not quietly substitute a new document or edit the application at the centre. Explain the discrepancy and request instructions on whether a clarification or another application step is required. Keep a note of the person spoken to and the direction received.
Plan for travel and possible waiting time. No official source establishes a standard appointment length, guaranteed same-day completion or a particular queue time. The important outcome is that the notified person completes the biometric, photograph and document checks recorded for that application.
Selected versus not selected: the practical difference
A non-selected applicant does not have to create a biometric appointment under this conditional process. That person still needs to complete the ordinary GST registration requirements and respond to any separate portal or officer communication. A selected applicant has an additional completion condition: the Rule 8 process is not treated as complete until the prescribed Aadhaar and centre verification is finished.
The distinction is also important for planning. Selection does not mean the application is defective, and non-selection does not mean approval is automatic. In both cases, the officer can verify the application under Rule 9. The biometric appointment is one stage in the registration process, not a decision on eligibility or a promise that a GSTIN will be issued.
If something goes wrong
The portal does not show a booking link
Sign in again, check the application’s pending tasks and review the registered contact channels. If the case says biometric verification is required but no link or centre appears, contact the state GST authority or the GSK named in the notice. Do not select a centre from an unrelated state advisory.
You are unsure who must attend
Compare the constitution in REG-01 with the people named in the portal instruction. For a non-individual applicant, ask the authority to confirm the notified individual instead of assuming that any authorised employee is acceptable.
An original does not match the upload
Do not alter or replace an uploaded document informally. Ask the centre or the relevant GST authority how the mismatch should be handled and whether a clarification or corrected application step is required. Keep a record of the document and the instruction received.
No appointment slot appears before the deadline
The 15-day language is a rule deadline, not a scheduling guarantee. Save screenshots or booking attempts and seek guidance from the relevant GST authority immediately. Waiting until the final day can leave no practical time to resolve a centre or identity issue.
You miss the appointment
Use the contact details in the portal message or state GST notice to ask what the case-specific next step is. Do not assume that missing an appointment automatically cancels the application or automatically grants an extension; the official instruction for your case controls.
Common misconceptions to avoid
- “Every new GST applicant must visit a GSK.” No. The described biometric process is conditional and portal-driven.
- “Fifteen days means approval in fifteen days.” No. It concerns completion of Aadhaar authentication in relation to Part B submission; Rule 9 governs separate verification and approval steps.
- “A booking confirms my GSTIN will be issued.” No. Appointment attendance completes a required verification stage, not the officer’s final decision.
- “A photocopy is enough.” The described centre process checks original copies of documents uploaded with REG-01.
- “A 2024 state notice is a permanent nationwide rule.” Rollout and logistics have varied by state and date; use the current portal message.
- “I should buy a biometric scanner.” The official process is carried out through a notified centre. No personal scanner or accessory is established as required preparation.
What happens after biometric verification?
Once the biometric, photograph and document-verification process required for your case is completed, the application can proceed as a complete application under Rule 8. The tax officer may still verify the application under Rule 9, seek clarification or follow an additional-review route before approval. Keep checking the GST portal for status changes and notices after the centre visit.

Questions applicants commonly ask
Is biometric verification required for every GST registration?
No. It is a conditional, portal-selected process for applicants who opted for Aadhaar authentication and are identified through the system’s risk parameters.
What is the exact deadline?
Rule 8 requires Aadhaar authentication while submitting Part B of REG-01 or within 15 days after Part B submission, whichever is earlier. That wording concerns authentication, not guaranteed appointment availability or registration approval.
Can someone else attend for an individual applicant?
The rule refers to the individual applicant completing the prescribed process. Follow the person named in the portal instruction and obtain confirmation from the GST authority before attempting a substitution.
Which documents should I carry?
Carry the original versions of the documents uploaded with REG-01 that relate to your application. There is no single universal list for every constitution and state, so check the case message for additional instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes a GSK appointment mean my GSTIN is approved?
No. The visit completes a verification stage. Rule 9 still governs officer verification, clarification and approval, and an additional-review route may apply.
Can I use a centre listed in another state’s notice?
Do not do so unless your own portal message directs you there. The centre, jurisdiction and booking arrangement are case- and state-specific and can change over time.
Do I need to purchase a fingerprint scanner or other equipment?
No purchase is established as necessary. The described biometric process is performed through the notified facilitation arrangement.
What if a document’s original differs from the uploaded copy?
Raise the discrepancy with the centre or relevant GST authority. Do not replace or alter documents informally; ask whether a clarification or corrected filing step is required.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is GST biometric verification mandatory for every new applicant?
No. It is a conditional, portal-selected step for applicants who opted for Aadhaar authentication and were identified through the system’s risk parameters.
What does the 15-day GST rule mean?
Aadhaar authentication must be completed when Part B of REG-01 is submitted or within 15 days afterward, whichever is earlier. It is not a promise of an appointment slot or approval within 15 days.
What should I take to the GST Suvidha Kendra?
Take the original versions of documents uploaded with REG-01, your appointment details and any case-specific items listed in the portal message.
Who must attend for a company or partnership?
Attend with the promoter, partner, primary authorised signatory or other notified individual named or identified for the application. Confirm any uncertainty with the relevant GST authority.
Does biometric verification guarantee a GSTIN?
No. It completes a required verification stage. Officer verification, clarification and approval still proceed under Rule 9.
Can I attend any GSK?
Use only the centre and booking link shown in your own GST portal instructions. State advisories and locations may differ or change.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do I need to buy biometric equipment?
No. The described process takes place through a notified facilitation centre; no personal scanner or accessory is established as required.
What if my original document does not match the upload?
Ask the centre or relevant GST authority how to handle the discrepancy. Do not informally replace or alter the uploaded document.
The Bottom Line
GST biometric verification is a risk-based, portal-triggered step—not a universal GST registration appointment. If selected, complete Aadhaar authentication within the Rule 8 deadline, book the centre shown in your message, send the named individual, and carry matching originals of the REG-01 documents. Attendance completes verification, not approval, so continue monitoring the portal under Rule 9.
