Group14 Technologies closed a $463 million Series D financing on August 20, 2025, led by SK Inc. The Woodinville, Washington-based battery-materials company said it will use the capital to expand production of its silicon-carbon anode material, SCC55, in the United States and South Korea.
The transaction also included Group14’s acquisition of SK’s remaining 75% interest in their South Korean joint venture. That gives Group14 100% ownership of the factory, now known as BAM-3—making the deal both a major private funding round and a significant manufacturing-control transaction.

The stated purpose of the financing is to scale SCC55 production in the U.S. and South Korea, support global deliveries to battery customers and meet demand for energy-storage applications.
Why the South Korean factory matters
The acquisition may be as important as the headline funding figure. By buying SK’s remaining interest, Group14 became the sole owner of BAM-3 in Sangju, South Korea.
According to the company, BAM-3:
- Has initial stated capacity of 2,000 metric tons of SCC55 per year.
- Represents approximately 10 gigawatt-hours of battery-equivalent capacity.
- Began delivering SCC55 to customers in September 2024.
- Is positioned close to major Asian battery manufacturers.
Full ownership could give Group14 more direct control over capital investment, production decisions, customer supply and intellectual-property management. It also means Group14 assumes more of the facility’s operating, financing and execution risk instead of sharing those responsibilities with a joint-venture partner.

What Group14 makes
Group14 is not primarily a battery-cell or consumer-electronics company. It develops and manufactures battery-active materials for cell makers.

- Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries are the world's longest lasting AA batteries

- These double A batteries are leak proof batteries, guaranteed based on standard use
- Lightweight household batteries last up to 25 years in storage
Its flagship product, SCC55, is a proprietary silicon-carbon material designed for use in the anode of a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Group14 markets it as a potential drop-in replacement for graphite, the conventional anode material used in many lithium-ion cells. The company describes SCC55 as suitable for applications including electric vehicles, consumer electronics, grid storage, data-center power and electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft.
SCC55 is not a standalone battery. The performance of a finished cell depends on the entire system, including the cathode, electrolyte, binder, electrode loading, formation process, thermal management and operating conditions. “Drop-in replacement” should therefore be understood as Group14’s commercial positioning, not as proof that every cell manufacturer can substitute the material without qualification work.
Why silicon anodes attract investment
Silicon can store substantially more lithium than graphite in theory. That creates a possible route to higher energy density—more energy in a battery of the same size or weight—or to smaller battery packs delivering comparable range.
The problem is durability. Silicon expands and contracts significantly as it takes in and releases lithium during charging and discharging. That mechanical stress can damage the electrode, reduce capacity over time and complicate manufacturing.
A commercially successful silicon-anode material must balance several competing requirements:

- Lightweight household batteries last up to 25 years in storage
- Energy density
- Fast-charging performance
- Cycle life
- Safety and swelling control
- Cost
- Manufacturing yield
- Compatibility with existing cell-production equipment
Group14’s pitch is that SCC55 can deliver silicon’s potential benefits while fitting into existing lithium-ion manufacturing processes. That compatibility could reduce the cost and disruption of adoption compared with an entirely new battery architecture. It still has to be demonstrated consistently in complete commercial cells, at production volumes and at a price customers will accept.
Separating material claims from commercial proof
Group14 lists performance figures on its website, including claims involving energy-density improvements, very fast charging and cycle life. Those are company-reported figures, and the relevant test conditions, cell designs and independent validation are not fully established by the financing announcement.
For investors and industry observers, the more meaningful questions are:
- Is the material being produced consistently? A factory’s nameplate capacity does not establish that it is operating at that level.
- Where are customers in the qualification process? Sampling, pilot production and high-volume commercial production are different milestones.
- What happens in a complete cell? Anode-material advantages can be reduced or offset by the cathode, electrolyte, electrode design and battery-management system.
- What is the delivered cost? A higher-performing material must also be affordable enough for large-scale batteries.
- Does it work without major factory changes? The closer SCC55 is to a practical drop-in material, the easier adoption may be.
Group14 says BAM-3 has shipped material to more than 100 battery-manufacturing customers. That figure should not be interpreted as 100 automotive mass-production programs: the company’s customer description spans electric vehicles, consumer electronics and other rechargeable-battery markets.
Group14’s broader manufacturing footprint
Group14 says its first two battery-active-materials factories are in Washington state:

- BAM-3: Sangju, South Korea.
The company has described BAM-2 as having two manufacturing modules, each capable of producing up to 2,000 tons of SCC55 annually, according to Group14. It has also described plans or efforts to expand its European silicon-battery infrastructure through a silane-gas facility in Germany.
These sites should not automatically be treated as equivalent operating capacity. Facilities may be under construction, ramping, qualifying equipment or producing below their design limits. The company’s public materials do not provide a complete, independently verified breakdown of current production, utilization or profitability for each site.

What the financing does—and does not—tell us
The funding gives Group14 more financial capacity to expand production and take full control of an important Asian manufacturing asset. It may help the company serve customers in both the U.S. and Asia while building a more geographically distributed supply chain.
However, the public announcement does not disclose:
- Group14’s post-money valuation
- The financing’s security or share-price terms
- Each investor’s check size
- The purchase price for SK’s remaining 75% interest
- Revenue, profitability or backlog
- Production utilization or customer-specific shipment volumes
- The silicon percentage in customers’ commercial anodes
- Independent validation of headline performance claims
Those omissions prevent a complete financial assessment of the company or the attractiveness of the investment round. More than $1 billion in cumulative equity funding shows that Group14 has attracted substantial private capital; it does not establish the company’s valuation, eventual profitability or likelihood of an initial public offering.

The strongest evidence will come from execution after the financing:
- Consistent production at BAM-3 and the U.S. facilities
- Customer qualification moving into recurring, high-volume orders
- Measured cell-level improvements in energy density, charging, cycle life and safety
- Competitive cost compared with graphite and rival silicon materials
- Successful integration into existing battery factories
- Additional capital requirements for U.S. and European expansion
The geographic strategy has benefits and trade-offs. South Korean production places Group14 near major Asian battery customers, while Washington facilities support a U.S. supply chain. At the same time, a cross-border footprint creates exposure to logistics costs, tariffs, regulations and geopolitical risks.
Most importantly, the transaction should not be confused with proof that silicon has replaced graphite or that Group14 has solved the battery industry’s durability and cost challenges. It is a scale-up signal: the company has raised substantial private capital and gained full control of an operating production site. Whether that becomes broad commercial adoption depends on customer qualification, manufacturing consistency, cell economics and real-world performance.
