GPF and PPF are not interchangeable savings accounts. The General Provident Fund (GPF) is an employment-linked fund for eligible government employees, with deductions and access controlled by the applicable service rules. The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is an individual savings scheme that a person can open for themselves or a minor, with a defined annual deposit range and scheme-based loan and withdrawal conditions.
For a rate comparison, use matching periods. India Post listed PPF at 7.1% a year, compounded yearly, when accessed on 13 October 2026. The Department of Economic Affairs listed a GPF notice for the third quarter of financial year 2026–27, dated 5 October 2026, but the rate was not available in the published text reviewed. The last GPF rate figure available here is 7.1% a year for 1 January–31 March 2026, which is historical and must not be presented as the current GPF rate.

GPF and PPF at a glance
| Feature | GPF | PPF |
|---|---|---|
| Who can use it | Eligible government employees under the applicable employment and service rules | An individual for their own account or an account opened for a minor, subject to scheme rules |
| Who controls deposits | Usually linked to payroll subscription and the employee’s service rules | The subscriber chooses deposits, subject to the annual scheme limits |
| Annual deposit limits | Minimums, ceilings and changes to subscription depend on the governing service rules | At least ₹500 and up to ₹1,50,000 in a financial year; the ceiling includes the subscriber’s own account and an account opened for a minor |
| Rate reference | The Q3 FY 2026–27 notice was listed on 5 October 2026, but its rate was not available in the published text reviewed. A rate of 7.1% applied for Q4 FY 2025–26, from 1 January to 31 March 2026 | India Post listed 7.1% per annum, compounded yearly, when accessed on 13 October 2026; small-savings rates can change for a new effective period |
| Interest method | Determined by the notified GPF rate and applicable government-fund rules | Monthly calculation uses the lowest balance between the close of the fifth day and month-end; credit is made at year-end |
| Loans and withdrawals | Advances and withdrawals are controlled by the subscriber’s applicable service rules | Loans and withdrawals are permitted only under the PPF Scheme’s timing, balance and repayment conditions |
| Tax | Depends on the fund’s statutory classification, the Income-tax rules and the relevant assessment year | Deposits can qualify under section 80C within the aggregate limit, and the government portal describes PPF interest as tax-free, subject to the applicable tax rules and regime |
The practical difference is control. A GPF balance follows your government employment and service record. A PPF balance is an account you operate personally, but it is deliberately structured for long-term saving rather than unrestricted access.

An employment-linked provident fund
GPF is attached to eligible government service. Your right to subscribe, the way deductions are made, changes to the subscription amount, advances and withdrawals all come from the service rules that apply to your post, department and employment status. It is therefore not a public account that anyone can open by completing an application.
#1 Best Overall
In practice, the contribution is normally arranged through payroll. That makes GPF automatic in a way PPF is not: once a subscription is in place, the amount is deducted and credited through the government payroll process rather than requiring you to remember a deposit every month. The exact adjustment rules, minimum subscription and permitted changes are not the same across every service framework, so a GPF subscriber should use the current rules issued for their employment rather than borrowing PPF limits by analogy.
Why employment status matters
Eligibility can change when you join, leave or move within government service. The account is part of your employment record, and settlement or continuation is handled under the relevant service provisions. A person who is not covered by the applicable government provident-fund rules cannot simply choose GPF as a retail alternative to PPF.
What PPF is and who can open it
An individual account for yourself or a minor
PPF is an individual savings scheme. A person may subscribe for themselves or open an account on behalf of a minor, subject to the scheme’s conditions. It is not restricted to government employees, and having a GPF account does not by itself prevent you from holding a PPF account.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →One annual ceiling across your own and minor’s accounts
The government myScheme page sets the PPF contribution range at ₹500 minimum and ₹1,50,000 maximum per financial year. The ₹1,50,000 ceiling is inclusive of deposits into your own PPF account and an account you opened for a minor. Deposits may be made in multiple instalments, so you can spread contributions through the year instead of making one payment.
The ceiling is a limit on eligible deposits, not a target. Depositing less than ₹500 in the financial year can create a compliance problem under the scheme, while depositing above ₹1,50,000 does not create additional eligible PPF contribution room. Keep a year-to-date total across all accounts for which you are the subscriber or guardian.
How contributions differ
GPF: payroll and service-rule decisions
With GPF, the key decision is the subscription amount permitted under your service rules and the process for changing it. Payroll records, department instructions and the relevant provident-fund rules determine when a change takes effect and how a contribution is recorded. The available material does not establish a single national GPF minimum, maximum or frequency rule that can safely be applied to every employee.

That uncertainty is important when planning cash flow. Do not assume that the PPF ₹500 minimum or ₹1,50,000 ceiling controls your GPF deduction, and do not assume that a GPF subscription can be changed whenever a PPF deposit can be made. Check the current payroll and service instructions for your employer.
PPF: flexible timing within a fixed yearly band
PPF gives you control over when to deposit during the financial year, but the annual limits remain fixed by the scheme. Multiple instalments can be useful when income arrives irregularly, provided the total reaches at least ₹500 and stays within ₹1,50,000 across the relevant accounts.
Deposit timing matters because PPF interest is not calculated from the average of all deposits made during the month. The scheme uses the lowest balance between the close of the fifth day and the end of that month. A deposit credited by the close of the fifth day can therefore be included in the balance used for that month; a deposit credited after the fifth day generally misses that month’s interest calculation and starts affecting the following month’s balance.
A simple timing illustration
Suppose your account holds ₹40,000 at the start of a month. If you add ₹20,000 and the deposit is credited by the close of the fifth day, the month’s eligible lowest balance can reflect ₹60,000. If the same deposit is credited on the sixth day, the lowest balance for that month can remain ₹40,000, with the higher balance affecting later months. The exact interest amount depends on the notified rate and the account’s complete month-by-month balances.
How interest is set and credited
PPF’s current listed rate and calculation convention
India Post listed PPF at 7.1% per annum, compounded yearly, when the page was accessed on 13 October 2026. Treat that as a period-specific listing, not a permanent promise: small-savings rates can be revised for a later quarter or other effective period.

Interest is calculated for each calendar month using the lowest balance between the close of the fifth day and month-end. Although the calculation is monthly, the interest is credited to the account at the end of the financial year. This is why a deposit made early in the month can matter even when you do not see a separate monthly credit in the account statement.

GPF’s rate must be matched to its quarter
GPF interest is notified for a defined period. The Department of Economic Affairs listed a notice for Q3 FY 2026–27 dated 5 October 2026, but the rate itself was not exposed in the published text reviewed. The last figure available is 7.1% per annum for Q4 FY 2025–26, covering 1 January through 31 March 2026. That historical figure cannot be carried forward as the Q3 FY 2026–27 rate.
When comparing balances, write the effective dates beside every rate. Comparing PPF’s 13 October 2026 listing with GPF’s January–March 2026 historical figure can create a false impression that both funds currently pay the same rate. A valid comparison requires the GPF notice and PPF rate for the same effective period.
Why a headline rate is not your return
Your outcome depends on when money enters the account, how long it remains invested, the notified rate for each period and the rules governing crediting. For PPF, a deposit just after the fifth-day cutoff can lose one month of interest eligibility even though it remains in the account for most of that month. For GPF, payroll timing and the applicable fund rules determine how subscriptions and credited interest appear in your statement.
Loans, withdrawals and access to money
PPF loans are limited borrowing facilities
PPF is not a current account. The myScheme description allows a loan after the prescribed waiting period and before the end of the specified early-account window. The maximum principal is 25% of the balance at the end of the second year immediately preceding the year in which you apply.
The loan principal must be repaid within 36 months. If repayment is late or incomplete, the scheme imposes additional interest consequences. The 25% calculation is based on an earlier year’s balance, not simply the amount visible on the day you submit the application, so a recent deposit may not immediately increase the borrowing limit.
Use the current PPF Scheme text and the account provider’s procedure for the exact application, documentation and interest wording. Do not treat the loan facility as permission to withdraw any amount whenever you choose.
Rank #4
PPF withdrawals follow scheme conditions
The PPF Act makes withdrawals subject to the scheme’s terms and conditions and ties the minimum waiting period to the end of the financial year in which the initial subscription was made. The statutory excerpt available for this comparison does not set out every current rule for partial withdrawals, premature closure or extensions after maturity.

That means an account holder should verify the current scheme text before relying on a particular date, reason or percentage. A withdrawal plan that ignores the account’s opening financial year, earlier withdrawals or the applicable balance formula can be rejected or produce a different permitted amount than expected.
GPF access depends on service rules
GPF advances, temporary withdrawals and final settlement are governed by the subscriber’s applicable employment and service rules. The available material does not establish one complete, current timetable or a universal list of permitted reasons that applies to every GPF subscriber.
Do not describe GPF as simply “locked until retirement.” Some service frameworks provide advances or withdrawals for specified purposes or circumstances, while others impose different approvals and limits. Before making a financial commitment based on a GPF balance, obtain the current rule and confirm the required sanctioning authority, documentation, notice period and repayment treatment.
Liquidity comparison
- GPF: access is employment-rule driven. Payroll, departmental approval and service conditions are central.
- PPF: access is scheme-rule driven. Loans and withdrawals have account-age, balance and repayment conditions.
- Neither account: should be treated as an unrestricted emergency fund. Keep a separate liquid reserve for expenses that cannot wait for an approval or statutory eligibility date.
Tax treatment: similar labels do not mean identical results
PPF deductions and interest
The government myScheme page says PPF deposits can qualify for a deduction under section 80C and describes PPF interest as tax-free. The Income Tax Department identifies ₹1,50,000 as the aggregate section 80C deduction ceiling. That ceiling applies across qualifying investments and payments, not only to PPF deposits.
Your actual deduction depends on whether you have available section 80C room, the assessment year and the tax regime you use. A PPF deposit does not create a deduction above the aggregate ceiling, and a person who has already used the limit through other qualifying items may receive no additional deduction from the same deposit.

GPF requires classification and condition checks
Income Tax Department guidance distinguishes types of provident funds and sets conditional treatment for contributions, interest and retirement payments. It also identifies thresholds for interest on employee contributions. Consequently, you should not assume that every GPF tax result automatically matches PPF’s treatment.
For a GPF calculation, confirm the fund’s statutory classification, the relevant assessment year, the amount of employee contribution, the applicable interest threshold and the rules for the payment you expect to receive. Retirement settlement, transfer, withdrawal and accumulated-interest treatment can involve different conditions.
How to avoid a tax-comparison mistake
- Identify the assessment year for the contribution, interest or withdrawal.
- Check whether you are using the tax regime in which the section 80C deduction is available.
- Add all section 80C-eligible items before deciding how much PPF deduction remains.
- For GPF, confirm the fund category and employee-contribution interest conditions instead of copying a PPF assumption.
- Keep statements and payroll certificates that support the contribution and interest figures reported in your return.
Which is better: GPF or PPF?
There is no universal winner because most people do not have the same choice set. An eligible government employee may have GPF through employment and may also use PPF for an additional, personally controlled account. Someone without GPF eligibility is comparing PPF with other savings options, not choosing between two interchangeable provident funds.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
GPF is usually the relevant first account when
- Your employment rules make you eligible and payroll subscription is available.
- You value an employment-linked contribution process rather than manually scheduling deposits.
- You can accept access being governed by service rules and departmental approvals.
- You need to coordinate the account with government-service retirement and settlement provisions.
PPF may fill a different role when
- You want an individual account that is not limited to government employees.
- You need control over deposit timing within the ₹500-to-₹1,50,000 annual range.
- You are comfortable with scheme-based liquidity instead of immediate access.
- You want to consider the section 80C deduction, subject to the aggregate limit and your tax regime.
- You are saving for a minor and can manage the combined annual ceiling across your own and the minor’s account.
Questions to answer before choosing
- Am I actually eligible for GPF under my current employment and service rules?
- How much can I contribute, and how quickly can I change that amount?
- When might I need the money, and would a rule-bound loan or withdrawal be too slow?
- Have I already used the section 80C ceiling through other qualifying items?
- Which rate period am I comparing, and is the GPF figure current or historical?
- Would holding both accounts improve diversification of access and tax treatment, or simply create contributions I cannot comfortably maintain?
Common mistakes and how to prevent them
Calling the historical GPF rate current
The 7.1% GPF figure available for Q4 FY 2025–26 applies only from 1 January to 31 March 2026. The Q3 FY 2026–27 notice exists, but its rate was not available in the published text reviewed. Label the quarter every time you quote a GPF rate.
Applying PPF limits to GPF
₹500 and ₹1,50,000 are PPF figures. They do not establish GPF contribution limits, subscription changes or payroll rules. Use your department’s current GPF instructions for those questions.
Assuming an early PPF deposit always earns a full year of interest
PPF interest is monthly under the fifth-day balance convention and credited at year-end. A deposit made late in a month may not count for that month, so deposit timing affects the result.
Treating a PPF loan as a withdrawal
The loan has an account-age window, a 25%-of-an-earlier-balance cap and a 36-month repayment requirement. It is a conditional borrowing facility, not unrestricted access to the balance.

PPF’s stated tax treatment and GPF’s statutory-fund treatment should be checked separately. The assessment year, tax regime, fund classification and contribution-interest thresholds can change the result.
A practical comparison checklist
- Record the exact PPF rate listing date and the GPF rate quarter before comparing returns.
- For PPF, total deposits across your own and minor’s accounts before making another instalment.
- Schedule PPF deposits so that credited amounts meet the close-of-fifth-day convention where possible.
- Ask your payroll or establishment section for the current GPF subscription, advance, withdrawal and settlement rules.
- Separate emergency cash from both accounts because each has access conditions.
- Calculate available section 80C room after counting every other qualifying item.
- Check the relevant assessment year and tax regime before claiming a deduction or describing interest as exempt.
- Use the current PPF Scheme text for exact withdrawal, premature-closure, maturity and extension procedures.
Bottom line for a government employee
GPF is the employment-linked fund whose contribution and access rules follow your government service. PPF is a separately controlled individual account with a ₹500 minimum, a ₹1,50,000 combined annual ceiling for your own and minor’s accounts, a fifth-day interest convention and conditional loans and withdrawals. Compare them by eligibility, contribution control, liquidity and tax circumstances—not by placing an old GPF rate beside a current PPF rate and declaring one universally better.
