Yes—the $314,626,932 verdict was real. On July 1, 2025, a Santa Clara County jury found for a class of California Android users who alleged that Google transferred information over cellular networks in the background without permission, including while phones were idle. A court entered judgment afterward.
But the verdict is not the whole current story. The parties later proposed a $350 million cash settlement intended to replace the verdict and avoid Google’s appeal. That means the $314.6 million figure is not the amount every eligible user will receive, and the final payment process and status should be confirmed through the official case materials and court docket.

What the case was about
The lawsuit, Attila Csupo, Andrew Burke and Kerry Hecht v. Google LLC, California Superior Court case no. 19CV352557, concerned alleged background transfers between Google-licensed Android phones and Google servers.

The plaintiffs alleged that Android devices could send and receive information over a user’s cellular network when the phone was:

The legal theory was more specific than a general claim that Google collected personal information. The plaintiffs argued that Google used cellular bandwidth paid for by users for Google’s own purposes, including information collection and targeted advertising, without adequate notice or valid consent. They also argued that some transfers could have been delayed until a phone connected to Wi-Fi.
“Cellular data” in this case refers to network capacity consumed by background transfers. The case did not establish that Google took every user’s entire data allowance or accessed the contents of every user’s messages, photos or files.
A federal court description of substantially similar allegations and reporting on the plaintiffs’ arguments describe the dispute in those terms.
What the jury decided
The jury returned its verdict on July 1, 2025, awarding the certified California class $314,626,932. The court later entered a monetary judgment on July 23, 2025, effective July 11, 2025. The trial had begun on June 2, 2025.
The official verdict and judgment notice confirms the case identification, class definition, award and judgment dates.

The careful way to describe the result is that the jury found Google liable under the claims presented at trial and awarded damages to the certified class. It is not accurate to summarize the verdict as proof that Google “secretly stole everyone’s data.”
Google’s response
Google disputed the verdict. According to reported statements from Google, the company argued that the background communications supported Android’s security, performance, reliability and core functionality. Google also said the transfers used very small amounts of cellular data and contended that users had consented through terms, privacy policies or device settings.

The plaintiffs took the opposite position: that the transfers could occur without meaningful notice, consumed users’ paid cellular data, and were not fully controllable by users. They argued that Google could have routed or delayed some activity over Wi-Fi.
Who was covered by the California class?
The California class generally covered natural persons who:
- Resided in California;
- Used a mobile phone running a Google-licensed version of Android;
- Had a cellular data plan; and
- Used the phone during the class period beginning August 9, 2016.
Google personnel, certain judicial personnel and people who submitted a valid exclusion request by May 15, 2025 were excluded. The exact terms appear in the official notice.

Who was not automatically covered?
- Android users who lived outside California;
- iPhone users;
- People without a cellular data plan;
- People who opted out by the deadline; and
- Other expressly excluded parties listed in the case materials.
The $314.6 million award therefore was not a nationwide payment for every Android user.

Why the amount later became $350 million
After the verdict, Google and the plaintiffs negotiated a proposed $350 million cash settlement. The settlement notice says the agreement was intended to resolve the case, avoid Google’s appeal and replace the existing verdict and judgment.
Under the proposed terms, Google would also:
- Update its Google Play Terms of Service;
- Update a related Help Center page;
- Revise Android setup screens to disclose the conduct at issue and seek consent; and
- Disable a related Android setting.
The settlement notice scheduled an approval hearing for February 24, 2026 and stated that the settlement would become binding if approved. The materials available for this article do not independently establish the final approval order, whether the judgment was formally vacated, or when distributions began. Those points should be checked against the Santa Clara County docket and the official case website before relying on them.
The two figures describe different outcomes:
| Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|
| $314,626,932 | The California jury’s July 2025 damages award and subsequent judgment. |
| $350 million | The negotiated cash settlement proposed to resolve the case and avoid an appeal. |
The settlement was not simply an extra $35 million added to the verdict. It was a separate negotiated resolution designed to replace the judgment if approved.
How much could an individual user receive?
No reliable fixed payment amount was provided in the settlement notice. A person’s eventual payment would depend on:

- The final number of eligible class members;
- Court-approved attorneys’ fees and litigation expenses;
- Notice and settlement-administration costs;
- Any approved service awards or other deductions; and
- The court-approved distribution formula.
The settlement notice says the remaining funds would be distributed to class members “to the extent practicable,” with undistributed funds potentially sent to a court-approved charitable organization.
Do not divide $350 million by an estimated class size and treat the result as a promised check. That would be only a rough gross calculation before deductions and would not establish an official payout.
Do users need to file a claim?
The settlement notice said class members did not need to take immediate action to be paid and that additional payment information would be provided later. That does not justify claiming that every eligible user will automatically receive money or that no claim procedure will ever be required.
If you believe you may be covered:
- Use the official case website and court materials, not an unsolicited message.
- Look for a later notice explaining eligibility, payment method and any claim deadline.
- Do not pay a fee to submit a class-action claim.
- Never provide passwords, cryptocurrency, gift cards, remote computer access or banking login credentials to receive a payment.
- Check spam and junk folders, but independently type the official website address rather than trusting an unfamiliar link.
Legitimate administrators may request information needed to issue a payment, but requests for account passwords, remote access or upfront fees are major warning signs.

| Issue | California case | Federal case |

| Geography | California residents in the certified class | U.S. residents outside the California class |
| Amount | $314.6 million verdict; proposed $350 million settlement | Proposed $135 million settlement |

The federal court record describes the proposed federal settlement class as U.S. residents who used Android mobile devices to access the internet through cellular networks during the relevant period, while excluding people covered by the California case. Its proposed $100 cap does not apply to the California settlement.
See the federal court order for the separate case’s terms.
What the verdict did not decide
The case should not be read as a ruling that:
- All Google data collection from Android devices is illegal;
- Every Android background connection violates California law;
- Google must stop all background communications;
- Every Android user worldwide is eligible for money; or
- Google accessed the contents of every user’s private files or communications.
The dispute focused on alleged unauthorized background transfers and the consumption of cellular bandwidth, alongside arguments about notice, consent and the purposes of the transfers.
Bottom line for readers
The headline was based on a genuine July 2025 California jury verdict: $314,626,932 for a certified class of California Android users. But the later proposed $350 million settlement changed the practical path of the case. It was designed to replace the verdict, resolve the appeal and add disclosure and Android-setting changes.
For payment purposes, the total fund is not an individual award. Eligibility, deductions, distribution rules and the final approval status must come from the official settlement materials and court docket. Android users outside California should look separately at Taylor v. Google, not assume they are covered by the California case.
