Gold could set another record within the next two years, but that outcome depends on interest rates, the U.S. dollar, geopolitical risk and continued official and investor buying. Published forecasts span a wide range: Goldman Sachs Research projects $4,900 per ounce at the end of 2026, J.P. Morgan Global Research sees $6,000, and says $6,300 is possible in 2027. The London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) analyst survey is less aggressive, with a 2026 average of $4,460 and a $3,975-$5,000 range. That dispersion makes new highs plausible rather than certain. Gold’s recent behavior also argues for caution: it has made repeated records, yet suffered a rapid pullback of more than 25% from its early-2026 high to the June low.
Will gold set a new record within the next two years?
Yes, a new record is plausible by 2028, but no published source provides a precise October 2028 target. The available 2026 and 2027 forecasts are useful horizon proxies, not guarantees. The bullish case assumes some combination of lower U.S. rates, a weaker dollar, persistent geopolitical or fiscal uncertainty, central-bank diversification and renewed portfolio demand.

Forecasts differ because they use different target types and assumptions. A year-end price, an annual average and an intraday high cannot be compared as if they were the same measure.
What do the main gold forecasts say for 2026 and 2027?
| Forecaster or source | Horizon and target | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Goldman Sachs Research | $4,900 per ounce at end-2026 | Central-bank diversification and reduced expectations for U.S. rate hikes support the forecast. |
| J.P. Morgan Global Research | $6,000 per ounce at end-2026 | Geopolitical resolution and Federal Reserve policy could change demand and price stability. |
| J.P. Morgan Global Research | $6,300 per ounce possible in 2027 | This is a possibility, not a guaranteed target. |
| LBMA analyst survey | $4,460 per ounce average in 2026; $3,975-$5,000 range | Analysts differ materially on rates, geopolitics and demand. |
| HSBC contributor to the LBMA survey | $4,586 per ounce average in 2026 | Geopolitical risk, a softer dollar, fiscal deficits and institutional buying support upside; high prices can reduce physical demand. |
| Standard Chartered contributor to the LBMA survey | $4,788 per ounce average in 2026 | Structural investment demand and de-dollarisation concerns are supportive, but allocations can reverse. |
The spread between $4,460 and $6,000 is not a contradiction by itself. The LBMA figure is an annual average, while the bank targets are year-end levels. An annual average can be below a year-end price even when the market rises through the year.

Why are investors bullish on gold?
Central banks are diversifying reserves
Goldman Sachs identifies reserve diversification as a major source of support. A January 2026 estimate reported by Reuters assumed emerging-market central banks would buy an average of 60 tonnes during 2026. That is an estimate, not a committed purchase schedule, and actual buying can change with reserve policy and prices.
Geopolitical and fiscal uncertainty increases demand for insurance
World Gold Council and bank research associate gold demand with geopolitical shocks, fiscal stress, trade uncertainty and concerns about policy credibility. Investors use the metal as insurance against abrupt changes in government policy or the purchasing power of currencies, rather than because it produces an income stream.

Gold does not pay interest. When markets expect lower rates, the opportunity cost of holding it falls. Because gold is priced in U.S. dollars, a weaker dollar can also lift its dollar price. The World Gold Council describes the combination of lower rates and a weaker dollar as moderately bullish in its 2026 scenario work.

Institutional and long-term portfolio allocations may expand
LBMA contributors point to institutional investors, family offices, exchange-traded funds and other long-term buyers as potential sources of additional demand. The World Gold Council also highlights Asian markets and long-term investors as increasingly important to price discovery.
Momentum can amplify safe-haven demand
Strong prior returns can attract momentum buyers at the same time that uncertainty encourages defensive allocations. That combination can produce fast advances, but it also leaves the market vulnerable when leveraged or crowded positions are liquidated.
What has gold already done?
The recent record streak explains why investors are willing to discuss much higher prices. The World Gold Council reported that gold reached more than 50 all-time highs and returned more than 60% in 2025, attributing the move to geopolitical and economic uncertainty, a weaker dollar, momentum and larger investor and central-bank allocations.

The 2026 record run was followed by a sharp correction. A July 2026 World Gold Council release recorded more than 12 all-time highs, a $5,405 per ounce intraday record in January, a $4,002 June low and a 7% year-to-date decline, with average volatility at 30%. Its mid-year report separately said gold traded above $5,500 intraday in January before falling below $4,000 in late June. The different intraday figures reflect the measurement used in each publication; both show that record prices can coexist with a rapid drawdown.
What could stop gold from making more records?
- Resilient growth and higher real yields: A stronger economy could delay rate cuts and make an interest-free asset less attractive.
- A stronger U.S. dollar: Dollar appreciation can pressure dollar-denominated gold.
- Geopolitical de-escalation: If major risks fade, safe-haven demand and hedging positions may unwind.
- Slower official or ETF buying: LBMA analysts caution that central-bank purchases could fall below the 2022-2024 peaks. High prices can also weaken jewelry, coin and small-bar demand.
- Profit-taking and crowded positioning: The World Gold Council’s 2026 scenarios include a 5%-15% decline during consolidation, consistent with the pullback already seen after the January record.
How should you compare conflicting gold forecasts?
- Identify the date and target type. Mark whether the number is an annual average, a year-end target or a possible intrayear high.
- Check the interest-rate assumption. A forecast built on Federal Reserve easing has a different risk profile from one assuming rates stay high.
- Check the dollar assumption. A weaker-dollar outlook generally provides more support to dollar-priced gold.
- Examine flow assumptions. Look for explicit expectations about central-bank purchases, ETF demand and institutional allocations.
- Find the downside case. A forecast without a correction scenario hides how much volatility the author expects.
- Keep the time horizon consistent. Do not compare a 2026 average with a 2027 possible peak and call the larger number a more accurate forecast.
Forecast dispersion is evidence of uncertainty, not proof that one analyst is necessarily wrong. The same macroeconomic event can affect rates, the dollar, official buying and investor positioning in opposite directions.
Can gold remain a safe haven if prices pull back?
Yes. A safe haven is an asset investors seek for diversification or protection during stress; it is not an asset that rises every day or avoids losses. Gold’s 2026 move from a January record to a June low demonstrates that defensive demand can coexist with double-digit declines when rates, the dollar or positioning move against it.

For a two-year investor, the practical implication is to treat every target as a scenario. Decide how much volatility and drawdown your overall plan can absorb, avoid using a short-term forecast as a promise, and reassess the assumptions when rate expectations, currency trends or official and ETF flows change.

Is J.P. Morgan’s $6,000 forecast a guaranteed 2026 price?
No. It is a year-end projection conditioned on policy and geopolitical assumptions. A market can trade above or below that level during the year, and the forecast can be revised before December.
Why can the LBMA average be below a bank’s year-end target?
The LBMA number represents the average price across 2026, while the bank target represents an expected level at the end of the year. If prices climb during the year, the final price can exceed the annual average.

Can gold fall even when central banks are buying it?
Yes. Higher real yields, a stronger dollar, easing geopolitical risk, weaker ETF flows or profit-taking can overwhelm official buying temporarily. Central-bank demand is supportive, not a price floor.
Does a record gold price mean every investor earned the reported 2025 return?
No. The World Gold Council’s more-than-60% figure describes the market’s return over its stated 2025 period. An investor’s result depends on the purchase date, currency, transaction costs and whether the position was held through the subsequent volatility.
