There is no universal winner. In India, a gold loan may cost less than a personal loan for the same borrowing need, but only if the actual interest, fees and repayment structure produce a lower total payable amount. It is secured by jewellery, ornaments or eligible coins, so missed payments can ultimately put the pledged gold at risk. A personal loan does not require that pledge, but it remains a binding debt and can carry its own interest, fees and default consequences.
Compare written offers for the same principal and duration. Decide “cheaper” from the total rupees payable, not the advertised rate alone; decide “safer” by weighing repayment certainty against your willingness to risk family gold.

Gold loan or personal loan: the short answer
A gold loan is generally easier to secure when you have eligible gold and can meet the lender’s valuation and eligibility rules. A personal loan relies on the lender’s assessment of your income, credit history and other underwriting information. Neither fact establishes which offer is cheaper.
The practical test is to place both sanction letters side by side and compare:
#1 Best Overall
- the same net amount credited to you;
- the same repayment period and payment frequency;
- interest calculated under the same assumptions;
- processing, appraisal, documentation, insurance, late-payment, foreclosure or other charges;
- the exact repayment schedule, including any final lump-sum or bullet payment; and
- what happens after a missed payment, including notice, cure time, recovery action and, for a gold loan, auction of the collateral.
India’s Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regulates lending against gold and silver collateral. Its 2025 directions set maximum loan-to-value (LTV) ceilings for consumption loans, but those ceilings are not promises that a borrower will receive that percentage. The lender’s valuation, eligible collateral, underwriting and product terms still control the offer. Read the RBI’s 2025 directions.
What you are actually borrowing
Gold loan: secured borrowing against eligible metal
You hand over eligible jewellery, ornaments or specified coins to the lender, which records the collateral and advances money against its assessed value. For valuation, RBI’s framework counts the intrinsic value of the gold or silver. Gems, stones and other non-metal additions do not increase the collateral value under that rule. Purity, net metal weight, the lender’s approved valuation method and eligibility checks therefore matter more than the retail price you paid for a finished ornament.
The lender keeps the collateral until you meet the contract’s repayment and settlement requirements. Depending on the product, repayment may be by regular instalments, interest servicing with principal at maturity, or another permitted structure. Read the sanction letter rather than assuming every gold loan works like an EMI loan.
Personal loan: unsecured borrowing
An unsecured personal loan does not require you to pledge gold. The lender prices and approves it using its own underwriting, which may include income, employment, credit history, existing obligations and bank-account information. “Unsecured” means there is no specific gold asset pledged for that loan; it does not mean the debt disappears when you miss a payment. The agreement can still provide for late charges, collection activity, credit-reporting consequences and legal recovery.
How to compare the full cost
Use a like-for-like worksheet. For each offer, start with the amount you actually need to receive, then record every rupee you must pay or that is deducted before disbursement.
| Cost item | Gold loan | Personal loan | How to compare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interest | Product-specific rate and calculation method | Borrower- and product-specific rate and calculation method | Check whether the quote is annual, monthly, flat or reducing balance, and the dates used for accrual. |
| Processing and documentation | May apply; some lenders also charge appraisal or valuation fees | May apply as a processing or documentation fee | Record the amount, GST treatment and whether it is deducted from disbursement. |
| Repayment structure | May be instalments, interest-only with principal at maturity, or another structure | Usually the lender’s stated instalment schedule, subject to contract | Compare the total of every scheduled payment, including a final maturity amount. |
| Prepayment or foreclosure | Can be nil or charged, depending on the product | Can be nil or charged, depending on the product | Use the written clause, not a verbal assurance. |
| Default-related charges | Late charges and possible collateral recovery or auction | Late charges and contractual recovery action | Check grace or cure periods, notices, charges and dispute contacts. |
A simple comparison is:
Total cost = all scheduled repayments + mandatory fees and taxes − any amount you do not actually have to pay.

Also calculate the net amount received. A loan advertised as ₹500,000 may credit less if fees are deducted at disbursement. Compare total rupees paid for the same net cash received, not merely the nominal sanctioned amount.

Why the interest rate alone misleads
A lower stated rate can be outweighed by appraisal, processing, safe-keeping, late-payment or foreclosure charges, or by a repayment structure that leaves a large principal due at maturity. Conversely, a product with a higher rate may have lower mandatory fees and a schedule that fits your cash flow better. Ask each lender for an amortisation or repayment schedule showing opening balance, interest, principal, fees, due dates and the final amount.
Do not infer a market winner
Available evidence does not provide a current, apples-to-apples personal-loan rate table or a representative sample of lenders. Personal-loan pricing is borrower-specific, and gold-loan rates and fees vary by lender and product. A claim that gold loans are always cheaper, or that personal loans are always more expensive, would go beyond the available evidence.
Repayment structures can change the result
Instalment repayment
With an instalment schedule, each due date normally combines interest and some principal. Confirm the number of instalments, due date, amount, whether the first payment is prorated and how a missed or partial payment is treated. Compare schedules over the same number of months; a shorter term can reduce total interest but increase the monthly cash requirement.
Bullet or maturity repayment
Some gold-loan products permit interest servicing during the term with the principal, or principal and accumulated interest, payable at maturity. This can make periodic payments look small while leaving a large final obligation. For bullet repayment loans, RBI’s 2025 directions require the amount payable at maturity to be accounted for in LTV calculations. Put the maturity amount in your budget from the day the loan starts; do not rely on refinancing or a hoped-for asset sale.
Prepayment and foreclosure
Ask whether you may repay early, how interest is recalculated, and whether a fee applies. Obtain the lender’s calculation of the exact closure amount on a specified date. A product-specific “nil foreclosure” statement does not establish that every product has the same term.

Which is safer when you miss a payment?
Gold loan: a direct risk to pledged property
The distinctive risk is loss of the pledged gold. RBI’s 2025 framework requires the loan agreement to explain the collateral description and value, the circumstances and procedure for auction, the notice period before auction, the timeline for releasing collateral after settlement and the refund of any surplus auction proceeds. Read those clauses before signing and keep the notice address, email and telephone details current.
An auction is not an automatic consequence of one late instalment in every product; the trigger and process are contract- and rule-dependent. Treat any missed payment as urgent: contact the lender immediately, ask for the cure amount and deadline in writing, and keep proof of payment and communication.
Personal loan: no pledged gold, but still a serious default
A personal-loan default does not expose a specific ornament to auction, but it can lead to late fees, collection activity, adverse credit reporting and other contractual or legal recovery steps. The absence of collateral should not be treated as permission to borrow beyond your repayment capacity. Read the default, acceleration and dispute clauses in the same way you would for a secured loan.
How to define “safe” for your household
Safety has two dimensions:
- Asset safety: whether losing a sentimental or essential family item would be unacceptable. If so, an unsecured offer may better match your priorities, provided its total cost and instalments are affordable.
- Cash-flow safety: whether you can make every payment without relying on uncertain income. A secured loan with a lower cost is not safer if its maturity payment is unrealistic.
What RBI’s 2025 gold-collateral rules mean for borrowers
LTV ceilings are maximums, not guaranteed advances
For consumption loans against eligible gold or silver collateral, the 2025 RBI directions set these ceilings by total loan amount:
| Total consumption-loan amount | Maximum LTV ceiling | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Up to ₹2.5 lakh | 85% | It does not guarantee approval or an 85% advance on your jewellery’s retail price. |
| Above ₹2.5 lakh and up to ₹5 lakh | 80% | It does not override purity, net-weight, eligibility or lender-assessment requirements. |
| Above ₹5 lakh | 75% | It does not make gems, workmanship or other non-metal value count as collateral. |
The lender must value eligible metal under the applicable method and may lend less than the ceiling. Ask for the recorded purity, net weight, valuation and resulting LTV in writing.
Contract information you should receive
The directions make the agreement’s collateral and recovery provisions central to the transaction. Check that your copy identifies:
Rank #4
- the items pledged and their recorded purity, net weight and value;
- the repayment amount, schedule and maturity date;
- the events that can lead to auction and the required notice period;
- how and when the collateral will be released after full repayment or settlement; and
- how any surplus from an auction will be refunded.
Keep the signed agreement, assay or valuation record, pledge receipt, payment receipts and every notice in a secure place.

Why the appraisal and paperwork deserve attention
In a September 30, 2024 supervisory notice, RBI reported deficiencies observed during its review, including valuation without the customer present, inadequate due diligence and end-use monitoring, insufficient auction transparency and weaknesses in LTV monitoring. The notice records supervisory concerns; it does not establish that every lender follows those practices.
Use that context to adopt practical safeguards:
- Attend the appraisal rather than handing over the item without observing the weighing and testing.
- Ask the appraiser to show the purity result, gross weight, deductions for stones or other non-gold parts, net eligible weight and final value.
- Check that the pledge receipt and agreement match the items you handed over, including identifying marks or photographs if supplied.
- Do not sign a blank form or accept an unexplained change between the appraisal and sanction amount.
- Ask how auction notices are delivered and update your contact details whenever they change.
Step-by-step: compare two real offers
- Define the need. Write the net amount required and the date by which you can repay. Do not ask for a larger amount merely because the collateral or eligibility allows it.
- Obtain written offers. Request the sanction letter, key fact statement or equivalent schedule for the gold loan and personal loan. Record the date and validity period of each quote.
- Normalise the comparison. Use the same net amount received, term, payment frequency and assumed repayment date. If one quote is for 12 months and the other for 24 months, request a comparable term or clearly show both totals.
- Enter every charge. Include processing, appraisal, documentation, GST, safe-keeping, late-payment, bounce, foreclosure and other mandatory charges stated in the contract. Mark optional services separately.
- Check the schedule. Add every instalment and any maturity or bullet amount. Confirm whether interest accrues daily, monthly or under another stated method.
- Calculate the net cash and total rupees paid. A fee deducted at disbursement reduces the cash you receive but does not remove the fee from your cost.
- Stress-test affordability. Ask whether you could make each payment after a temporary income interruption. For a gold loan, separately reserve the maturity amount if the product uses bullet repayment.
- Read default and exit terms. Note cure periods, notice channels, auction triggers, collateral release timing, surplus refunds, prepayment rights and dispute contacts.
- Verify the gold record. Before accepting the secured offer, confirm the recorded purity, net weight, valuation and item description while you are present.
- Choose only after considering the asset risk. Select the lower total cost only if the repayment plan is realistic and you accept the stated consequences of default.
Illustrative lender terms: why you must check the current page
One published example shows why product terms cannot be generalised. Central Bank of India’s gold-loan page describes a product with a maximum loan amount of ₹60 lakh and a 12-month repayment term; the page says its listed terms are valid through March 31, 2027. It lists a processing charge of up to ₹5,000 plus GST for loans above ₹5 lakh, nil processing fee up to ₹5 lakh, appraisal charges, nil prepayment or foreclosure charge and collateral release within seven working days after full repayment or settlement. It also refers to safe-keeping charges in specified circumstances after expiry or closure. See the bank’s product page and verify the current page and your sanction letter before relying on any item.
Those are terms for that lender’s described product, not evidence that gold loans generally have nil foreclosure charges, seven-day release, a ₹60 lakh limit or a 12-month term. A different branch, product, regulated entity or revised schedule may differ.
When a gold loan may fit
- You need funds quickly and have eligible gold whose recorded value supports the amount.
- You can make every scheduled payment and, if applicable, have a definite source for the maturity principal.
- The all-in cost is lower than the personal-loan offer after fees and taxes.
- You understand the auction triggers, notice process and release conditions.
- You are comfortable risking the pledged items if your repayment plan fails.
When a personal loan may fit
- Keeping the gold is a priority because of sentimental, family or future-use value.
- Your income and credit profile qualify for an affordable unsecured offer.
- The total payable amount and instalment schedule fit your budget without relying on uncertain refinancing.
- You prefer not to manage appraisal, pledge custody, redemption or auction clauses.
- You accept that an unsecured default can still damage your credit position and lead to contractual recovery action.
Common mistakes to avoid
Comparing advertised rates instead of total payable
Ask for the rupee total and schedule. A headline rate omits fees and may not reveal a maturity payment.

Ignoring the final payment
A small periodic payment can conceal a large bullet amount. Write that amount into your cash-flow plan before signing.
Leaving the appraisal unobserved
Be present, check the recorded details and retain the assay or pledge documents. RBI’s 2024 supervisory findings make this a prudent control, not a suggestion that every lender acts improperly.
Assuming “unsecured” means consequence-free
A personal-loan default can still trigger charges, collection, credit-reporting effects and legal remedies under the contract.

Bottom line for an Indian borrower
Choose the gold loan only when its written all-in cost is lower on a like-for-like basis, the repayment schedule is comfortably affordable and you knowingly accept the possibility that the pledged gold could be auctioned after default under the disclosed process. Choose the personal loan when retaining the gold matters more and its total cost and instalments remain manageable. The safer choice is the one whose repayment plan you can complete—not simply the one with the lower advertised rate.
